Synthesis of zeolite NaA at room temperature: The effect of synthesis parameters on crystal size and its size distribution

Insight into the Growth Mechanism of Low-Temperature Synthesis of High-Purity Lithium Slag-Based Zeolite A

The utilization of lithium slag (LS), a solid waste generated during the production of lithium carbonate, poses challenges due to its high sulfur content. This study presents a novel approach to enhancing the value of LS by employing alkali fusion and hydrothermal synthesis techniques to produce zeolite A at low temperatures. The synthesis of high-purity and crystalline lithium-slag-based zeolite A (LSZ) at 60 °C is reported for the first time in this research. The phase, morphology, particle size, and structure of LSZ were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption, and UV Raman spectroscopy, respectively. High-purity and crystalline zeolite A was successfully obtained under hydrothermal conditions of 60 °C, an NaOH concentration of 2.0 mol/L, and a hydrothermal time of 8 h. The samples synthesized at 60 °C exhibited better controllability and almost no byproduct of sodalite occurred compared to zeolite A synthesized at room temperature or conventional temperature (approximately 90 °C). Additionally, the growth mechanism of LSZ was elucidated, challenging the traditional understanding of utilization of lithium and enabling the synthesis of various zeolites at lower temperatures.

Synthesis of zeolite A from fly ash and its application in the slow release of urea

The study focused on the transformation of coal fly ash to zeolite A (ZA) as a potential carrier for the slow release of urea. After being treated with HCl aqueous solution and NaOH successively, SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ were converted into sodium silicoaluminate. The obtained silicoaluminate was then heated with NaAlO₂ in an aqueous NaOH solution at 70-110 °C for 3-18 h and zeolite A was successfully prepared according to the X-ray diffraction measurements. By changing the hydrothermal temperature and time, ZA could reach 237.3 mmol/100 g in maximum cation exchange capacity. ZA impregnated with urea (ZA-U) at a mass ratio of more than 5:1 exhibited slow release of urea and the kinetics release mechanism of ZA-U was proposed. The plant growth test proved that the slow release of urea from ZA-U can promote the growth of maize seedling.

Synthesized NaA nanozeolite as a catalyst for the preparation of 3-amino imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines under solvent-free conditions

Abstract:

The present study explores a new method for the fabrication of NaA nanozeolite as a simple and efficient catalyst for the production of 3-aminoimidazo [1,2-a] pyridines through the 3-component reaction of aldehydes, 2-aminoperidines and isocyanides under solvent-free conditions. The production of organic template free (OTF) NaA nanozeolite was performed at room temperature. The prepared nanozeolite was identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM), N2 sorption isotherm and particle size analysis (PSA). The particle sizes of synthesized spherical NaA nanozeolite were under 100 nm via the FESEM method. The BET surface area, total pore volume and mean pore diameter of the created sample were attained to be 362 m2g-1, 0.44 cm3 g-1 and 5.9 nm, respectively. The developed method has some advantages such as OTF production of NaA nanozeolite, simple synthesis method with short reaction time and easy separation using filtration and the ability to recycle and reuse of catalyst several times without reducing its efficiency.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetic Fe3O4/Zeolite NaA Nanocomposite for the Adsorption Removal of Methylene Blue Potential in Wastewater Treatment

In this research, the magnetic Fe3O4/zeolite NaA nanocomposite (Fe3O4/ZA), Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and zeolite NaA have been synthesized by facile hydrothermal methods for adsorption removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution. The as-synthesized Fe3O4/ZA nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), MicroRaman analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), N2 adsorption isotherms (BET), and UV-VIS analysis. The results show that with a small weight loading of Fe3O4, the ∼3.3% Fe3O4/ZA sample exhibits a high adsorption capacity (∼40.36 mg·g−1) and removal efficiency (∼96.8%) compared to that of the zeolite NaA (∼32.99 mg·g−1 and 79.11%, respectively). Interestingly, the removal efficiency and the adsorption capacity increase rapidly with the increase of adsorption time (10–60 minutes) and Fe3O4 loading (∼3.3–9.3% wt.) in the Fe3O4/ZA composition. The adsorption mechanism of MB molecules of the Fe3O4/ZA can be addressed at the combination of the interaction between active sites on the surfaces and edges of the invert spinel ferrite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and zeolite NaA with MB molecules. Our approach provides a simple, efficient, and scalable synthesis process that render practical applications of the magnetic Fe3O4/ZA nanocomposite as a lower-cost adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Design and Evaluation of 223Ra-Labeled and Anti-PSMA Targeted NaA Nanozeolites for Prostate Cancer Therapy-Part I

Prostate cancer is the second most frequent malignancy in men worldwide. Unfortunately, current therapies often lead to the onset of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), causing significant mortality. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new and targeted therapies that are advantageous over the current ones. Recently, the PSMA-targeted radioligand therapy of mCRPC has shown very promising results. In line with this, we described the synthesis of a new radioimmunoconjugate, 223RaA-silane-PEG-D2B, for targeted mCRPC therapy. The new compound consists of a NaA zeolite nanocarrier loaded with the α-particle emitting Ra-223 radionuclide, functionalized with the anti-PSMA D2B antibody. Physicochemical properties of the synthesized compound were characterized by standard methods (HR-SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, EDS, NTA, DLS, BET, TGA). The targeting selectivity, the extent of internalization, and cytotoxicity were determined in LNCaP C4-2 (PSMA+) and DU-145 (PSMA-) cells. Our results supported the 223RaA-silane-PEG-D2B synthesis and revealed that the final product had a diameter ca. 120 nm and specific activity 0.65 MBq/1mg. The product was characterized by a high yield of stability (>95% up to 12 days). The conjugation reaction resulted in approximately 50 antibodies/nanoparticle. The obtained radioimmunoconjugate bound specifically and internalized into PSMA-expressing LNCaP C4-2 cells, but not into PSMA-negative DU-145 cells. 223RaA-silane-PEG-D2B demonstrated also potent cytotoxicity in LNCaP C4-2 cells. These promising results require further in vivo evaluation of 223RaA-silane-PEG-D2B with regard to its toxicity and therapeutic efficacy.

Accelerated crystallization of magnetic 4A-zeolite synthesized from red mud for application in removal of mixed heavy metal ions

To cope with the increasing environmental issues of red mud, an integrated technological route for its comprehensive utilization was developed through the extraction of valuable components and the synthesis of magnetic 4A-zeolite. To accelerate the crystallization process of the synthesized 4A-zeolite, sodium chloride (NaCl) was innovatively employed under hydrothermal treatment. The effects of various parameters, including mass ratio of red mud/NaOH, alkali fusion temperature, alkali fusion time and molar ratio of NaCl/Al₂O₃, were systematically investigated. The results showed that approximately 81.0% Al, 76.1% Si and 95.8% Fe were utilized from red mud using alkali fusion and acid leaching methods. The optimal conditions of the alkali fusion process were determined as: mass ratio of red mud/NaOH = 1/2, alkali fusion temperature of 800 °C, and time of 90 min. Furthermore, when the molar ratio of NaCl/Al₂O₃ was kept at 1.5, the crystallization time reduced from 240 min to 150 min, and particle size distributions narrowed from 20-100 μm to 1-10 μm. The practical applications in removal of mixed heavy metal ions (Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Pb²⁺) from wastewater indicated that the as-synthesized magnetic 4A-zeolite is a promising candidate for heavy metals adsorption.

Synthesis and characterization of a single phase zeolite A using coal fly ash

Zeolitization of coal fly ash (CFA) provides a potential alternative for creating high-added-value products from this hazardous solid waste. In this work, a single phase zeolite A with high crystallinity was successfully synthesized from CFA via the alkali fusion hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, N₂ physisorption, and solid-state MAS NMR spectra were applied to characterize as-synthesized zeolites. Results indicated that the type and purity of zeolite were closely related to the synthesis conditions and parameters. A well-defined cubic shape of zeolite A with a specific surface area of 43.7 m² g⁻¹ was obtained at a low temperature of 75 °C during hydrothermal treatment for 18 h. The ammonium cation exchange capacity (CEC) test showed an impressive value of 232.2 mmol 100 g⁻¹ over prepared zeolite A, which was about 22 times that of the original CFA and close to commercial zeolite A. These results pave the way for the exploitation and utilization of the CFA.

Methylcellulose-Directed Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Zeolite NaA with High CO₂ Uptake

Zeolite NaA nanocrystals with a narrow particle size distribution were prepared by template-free hydrothermal synthesis in thermo-reversible methylcellulose gels. The effects of the amount of methylcellulose, crystallization time and hydrothermal treatment temperature on the crystallinity and particle size distribution of the zeolite NaA nanocrystals were investigated. We found that the thermogelation of methylcellulose in the alkaline Na₂O-SiO₂-Al₂O₃-H₂O system played an important role in controlling the particle size. The synthesized zeolite nanocrystals are highly crystalline, as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the nanocrystals can also display a well-defined facetted morphology. Gas adsorption studies on the synthesized nanocrystalline zeolite NaA showed that nanocrystals with a size of 100 nm displayed a high CO₂ uptake capacity (4.9 mmol/g at 293 K at 100 kPa) and a relatively rapid uptake rate compared to commercially available, micron-sized particles. Low-cost nanosized zeolite adsorbents with a high and rapid uptake are important for large scale gas separation processes, e.g., carbon capture from flue gas.
