Adsorption of BSA onto hexagonal mesoporous silicate loaded by APTES and tannin: Isotherm, thermodynamic and kinetic studies

Adsorption of β-Lactoglobulin on Thiol-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica

SBA-15 mesoporous materials were synthesized with different pore sizes (5 and 10 nm) and thiol-functionalized groups and then characterized to describe their ability to differentially adsorb β-lactoglobulin (BLG), a globular protein with an ellipsoid shape measuring 6.9 nm in length and 3.6 nm in width. All adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacities of mesoporous materials for BLG were dependent on the duration of contact between the two materials (mesoporous material and BLG) and the initial BLG concentration. It was also shown that the pore sizes and thiol groups of SBA-15-based adsorbents are important factors for the BLG adsorption capacities. Among the tested adsorbents, thiol-functionalized SBA-15 with a 10 nm pore size (SBA-15-SH-10) showed the highest adsorption capacity (0.560 g·g-1) under optimal experimental conditions. Kinetics studies demonstrated that the adsorption occurs predominantly inside the pores, with interactions occurring on heterogeneous surfaces. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters indicate a spontaneous and exothermic behavior of the BLG adsorption process onto the thiol-functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous adsorbent. Finally, the characterization of the SBA-15-SH-10 adsorbent at 308 K showed the occurrence of an oxidation reaction of the thiol groups to sulfonate groups during the adsorption process as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The spectra recorded after adsorption of the protein showed that this adsorption did not affect the secondary structure of the protein.

Adsorption of BSA Protein in Aqueous Medium Using Vegetable Tannin Resin from Acacia mearnsii (Mimosa) and Modified Lignocellulosic Fibers from the Bark of Eucalyptus citriodora

Proteins are abundant biomolecules found in human cells, as well as pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Some of them become pollutants when released into water. Adsorption is an advantageous method for separating proteins in aqueous media since proteins are already immobilized on solid surfaces. Adsorbents with surfaces rich in tannins are efficient due to their affinity for strong interactions with the various amino acids that make up proteins. This work aimed to develop an adsorbent for protein adsorption in aqueous medium using lignocellulosic materials modified from eucalyptus bark and vegetable tannins. A more efficient resin was prepared containing 10% eucalyptus bark fibers and 90% tannin mimosa by condensation with formaldehyde, and it was characterized by UV-Vis, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy and determinations of degree of swelling, bulk and bulk density and specific mass. For UV-Vis spectroscopy the percentage of condensed and hydrolysable tannins in the extracts of fibers of the dry husks of Eucalyptus Citriodora was estimated and it was also determined your soluble solids. The study of bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption was carried out in batch with quantification by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The most efficient prepared resin obtained 71.6 ± 2.78% removal in a solution of 260 mg L-1 of BSA working in a better pH range of the aqueous solution of BSA in its isoelectric point, ~ 5, 32 ± 0.02, under these conditions, the synthesized resin can reach a maximum BSA adsorption capacity of ~ 26.7 ± 0.29 mg g-1 in 7 min. The new synthesized resin presents good prospects for adsorption of proteins or species that in their structure have higher percentages of amino functional groups or amino acids with aliphatic, acidic and/or basic hydrophilic characteristics.

Tannic Acid as a Versatile Template for Silica Monoliths Engineering with Catalytic Gold and Silver Nanoparticles

Tannic acid in alkaline solutions in which sol-gel synthesis is usually performed with tetraethoxysilane is susceptible to various modifications, including formation of reactive radicals, oxidation under the action of atmospheric oxygen, self-association, and self-polymerization. Here, a precursor with ethylene glycol residues instead of ethanol was used, which made it possible to synthesize bionanocomposites of tannic acid and silica in one stage in neutral media under normal conditions without the addition of acid/alkali and organic solvents. Silica was fabricated in the form of optically transparent monoliths of various shapes with 2-4 nm pores, the radius of which well correlated with the size of a tannic acid macromolecule in a non-aggregated state. Polyphenol, which was remained in pores of silica matrix, served then as reducing agent to synthesize in situ gold and silver nanoparticles. As shown, these Au@SiO₂ and Ag@SiO₂ nanocomposites possessed localized surface plasmon resonance and high catalytic activity.

Au-O-MWCNTs and TiO2-O-MWCNTs as Efficient Nanocarriers for Dexamethasone: Adsorption Isotherms and Kinetic Studies

In this research, the fabrication of drug delivery systems based on oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) was studied. Herein, TiO2 and Au were conjugated with O-MWCNTs to prepare efficient nanocarriers for dexamethasone (dex). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, dex loading was studied using adsorption isotherms including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich. The results show that dex adsorption agreed well with the Freundlich isotherm. Increasing the TiO2 to O-MWCNT ratio from (1 : 4) to (1 : 2) can improve the adsorption capacity from $290\text{mg}\cdot {\text{g}}^{-1}$ to 320 $320\text{mg}\cdot {\text{g}}^{-1}$ . The increasing Au amount increases the adsorption capacity from $437.78\text{mg}\cdot {\text{g}}^{-1}$ (SA1) to maximum $476.19\text{mg}\cdot {\text{g}}^{-1}$ (SA6). The maximum equilibrium binding energy $A_T$ $\left(1.67\text{L}\cdot {\text{mg}}^{-1}\right)$ was obtained for SA2, and SA7 shows high binding strength between dex and the nanoadsorbent. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) show good affinity with high loading capabilities for dexamethasone adsorption. The synthesized TiO2-O-MWCNTs:1/2 with the maximum removal percent (80%) was proposed as an appropriate nanocarrier for dexamethasone. Pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models were investigated for all synthesized drug nanocarriers. According to regression coefficients, experimental data are in good agreement with the pseudo-second order model for all adsorbents except O-MWCNT/CTAB. Experimental results revealed that the Elovich model could account for the O-MWCNT/CTAB adsorbent.

Insights into the adsorption mechanism of tannic acid by a green synthesized nano-hydroxyapatite and its effect on aqueous Cu(II) removal

The polyphenolic tannic acid (TA) has been widely used in the stabilization and surface modification of nanomaterials. The interaction mechanism of TA with the biogenic nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) and its environmental importance, however, are poorly understood. This study explored the adsorption of TA using the green synthesized, eggshell-derived nHAP and implications of this process for the removal of aqueous Cu(II) via batch adsorption experiments, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigations. TA adsorption by nHAP was a complex pH-dependent process and significantly correlated with TA molecule speciation and amphoteric properties of nHAP via multiple adsorption modes including surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bond. The maximum TA adsorption amount was found to be 94.8 mg/g for less crystalline nHAP with lower calcination temperature. In the ternary Cu-TA-nHAP systems, TA promoted Cu(II) adsorption at pH < 5 and reduced Cu(II) uptake at pH > 5. Further studies of the effects of ionic strength and addition sequences, as well as Raman, FTIR, and XPS analyses revealed Cu(II) adsorption on nHAP was mainly dominated by inner-sphere surface complexation. These results can shed light on not only the utility of biogenic nHAP for TA and Cu(II) adsorption but also the evaluation of the effect of TA on the environmental behavior of heavy metals.

Tannic acid-loaded mesoporous silica for rapid hemostasis and antibacterial activity

The as-prepared tannic acid (TA)-load mesoporous silica via electrostatic adsorption (TMS) exhibited excellent hemorrhage control by both TA-induced faster blood contact and plasma protein crosslinking, and MS-initiated water absorption, blood components concentration and coagulation factors activation, and good antibacterial properties.
