Worldwide research on extraction and recovery of cobalt through bibliometric analysis: a review

Cobalt is a strategic and critical mineral whose demand is expected to grow rapidly. This study aims to provide a comprehensive summary of cobalt extraction and recovery research from 2012 to 2021 in the form of bibliometric analysis. The work was based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science) and carried out using the InCites of Clarivate for bibliometric data analysis and the software VOSviewer for science mapping. By analyzing a dataset of 4967 publications, the most influential journals, countries, authors, institutions, and publications were identified, and the keyword co-occurrence networks were mapped. The China mainland produced the most publications, while the USA had the highest average number of citations per publication and the UK was the most collaborative with other countries. The keyword analysis shows that the research hotspots gradually shifted over time from early means and methods for determination of cobalt in solution to recovery of cobalt from spent lithium batteries, smelting slag, copper-cobalt ore, etc. The research will be focused on further improvement and optimization of the separation, extraction, and recovery processes of cobalt from spent batteries in recent and future years, and three approaches were promoted to facilitate economization and industrialization of the processes in this field.

Column and batch sorption investigations of nickel(II) on extractant-impregnated resin

Macroporous resin-supported reagents have been identified as potential adsorbents for removal of toxic pollutants. This article presents an experimental designed to evaluate the sorption and desorption of nickel(II) with the help of column and batch procedure using simple extractant-impregnated resin (EIR). Isonitroso-4-methyl-2-pentanone (IMP) as an extractant was impregnated on a solid support like Amberlite XAD-4 to prepare the EIR sorbent. Column experimental conditions such as pH, sample flow rate and volume, eluting solution, and interfering ions were studied to optimize the nickel(II) sorption and recovery from aqueous media. The column results suggest that the quantitative nickel(II) sorption was observed at pH 5-6, and the quantitative recovery (≥ 95%) was achieved by using 1.0 M HNO₃. The high concentrations of cations and anions (except EDTA) present in the spiked binary and multi-element mixture solution show no interferences in both quantitative sorption and recovery of nickel(II), whereas the batch experiments were performed to evaluate nickel(II) sorption behavior using the linearized and non-linearized kinetic and isotherm models. By error function analysis, the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model were found to describe best the experimental data obtained over the studied concentration range and sorption time, respectively. The maximum sorption capacity of nickel(II) onto the EIR sorbent was found to be ~ 81 mg/g. The mean free energy (E = 10.1 kJ/mol) determined using Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm suggests chemical nature of nickel(II) sorption on EIR. The novelty of the EIR adsorbent lies in its potential for separation and recovery of nickel(II) at trace level in water samples of different origin.

Rapid extraction of copper ions in water, tea, milk and apple juice by solvent-terminated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction using p-sulfonatocalix (4) arene: optimization by artificial neural networks coupled bat inspired algorithm and response surface methodology

A bat inspired algorithm with the aid of artificial neural networks (ANN-BA) has been used for the first time in chemistry and food sciences to optimize solvent-terminated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (ST-DLLME) as a green, fast and low cost technique for determination of Cu²⁺ ions in water and food samples using p-sulfonatocalix (4) arene as a complexing reagent. For this purpose, the influence of four important factors four factors which was influenced on the extraction efficiency such as salt addition, solution pH and disperser and extraction solvent volumes were investigated. Central composite design (CCD) as a comparative technique was employed for optimization of ST-DLLME efficiency. The ANN-BA optimization technique was regarded as a superior model due to its higher value of extraction efficiency (about 7.21%) compared to CCD method. Under ANN-BA optimal conditions, the limit of quantitation (S/N = 10), limit of detection (S/N = 3) and linear range were 0.35, 0.12 and 0.35-1000 µg L^-1, respectively. In these circumstances, the percentage recoveries for drinking tea, apple juice, milk, bottled drinking water, river and well water spiked with 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg L^-1 of Cu²⁺ ions were in the acceptable range (91.4-107.1%). In comparison to other methods, the developed ST-DLLME method showed the lowest solvent and sample consumption, shortest value of extraction time, most suitable determination and detection limits and linear range with simple and low cost apparatus. Additionally, the use of bat inspired algorithm as a powerful metaheuristic algorithm with the aid of artificial networks is another advantage of the present work.

Application of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate/Activated Carbon onto the Preconcentration of Cadmium Ions in Solid-Phase Extraction Flow System

In the present study, activated carbon (AC) surface modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), written as SDS/AC, was applied as an adsorbent for preconcentration and determination of trace amount of cadmium ions in environmental sample waters. The SDS modification on AC was performed at the same time, while cadmium ions were concentrated in the flow system as solid-phase extraction. After the separation and preconcentration steps, cadmium retained on SDS/AC was eluted with HNO3 and was subsequently determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The analytical parameters that influence the quantitative determination of trace cadmium, such as SDS concentration, pH and volume of sample solution, eluent conditions, and interference, were optimized. At the optimum conditions, the general matrix elements had little interference on the proposed procedure. The detection limits was 17 ng·L−1, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) for 12 experiments at 10 µg·L−1 cadmium solutions was 2.8%. The developed method was applied into the analysis of environmental samples spiked cadmium.

Simultaneous extraction of Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions in water, wastewater, and food samples using solvent-terminated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction: optimization by multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition

Solvent-terminated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (ST-DLLME) as a simple, fast, and low-cost technique was developed for simultaneous extraction of Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions in aqueous solutions. Multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition with the aid of artificial neural networks (ANN-MOEA/D) was used for the first time in chemistry, environment, and food sciences to optimize several independent variables affecting the extraction efficiency, including disperser volume and extraction solvent volume, pH, and salt addition. To perform the ST-DLLME operations, xylene, methanol, and dithizone were utilized as an extraction solvent, disperser solvent, and chelating agent, respectively. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm versions II and III (NSGA II and NSGA III) as multiobjective metaheuristic algorithms and in addition central composite design (CCD) were studied as comparable optimization methods. A comparison of results from these techniques revealed that ANN-MOEA/D model was the best optimization technique owing to its highest efficiency (97.6% for Cd²⁺ and 98.3% for Cu²⁺). Under optimal conditions obtained by ANN-MOEAD, the detection limit (S/N = 3), the quantitation limit(S/N = 10), and the linear range for Cu²⁺ were 0.05, 0.15, and 0.15-1000 μg L^-1, respectively, and for Cd²⁺ were 0.07, 0.21, and 0.21-750 μg L^-1, respectively. The real sample recoveries at a spiking level of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.3 mg L^-1 of Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ ions under the optimal conditions obtained by ANN-MOEA/D ranged from 94.8 to 105%.
