Development and challenge of coal-based nanocarbon materials and their application in water treatment: a review

Under the dual pressures of environmental protection and energy security, the development and application of coal-based nanocarbon materials, supported by the technical concepts of molecular chemical engineering and nanomaterial science, is of significant importance for achieving the high-value clean utilization of coal. Furthermore, it serves as an effective means to assist in the realization of dual carbon goals. Coal, with its abundant reserves, high carbon content, and aromatic and hydrogenated aromatic groups, exhibits great advantages and potential in the synthesis of nanocarbon materials. In addition to its applications in traditional power and chemical industries, coal-based nanocarbon materials also demonstrate significant value in the field of environmental pollution control. This article succinctly summarizes the preparation methods and properties of coal-based carbon nanotubes, coal-based carbon quantum dots, and coal-based graphene, elucidates their current applications in water pollution control and governance, and anticipates their development trends in water pollution control, aiming to provide support for the clean and efficient utilization of coal and water pollution control.

Employing a magnetic chitosan/molybdenum disulfide nanocomposite for efficiently removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from milk samples

This study aimed to develop a highly efficient nanocomposite composed of magnetic chitosan/molybdenum disulfide (CS/MoS2/Fe3O4) for the removal of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-pyrene, anthracene, and phenanthrene. Novelty was introduced through the innovative synthesis procedure and the utilization of magnetic properties for enhanced adsorption capabilities. Additionally, the greenness of chitosan as a sorbent component was emphasized, highlighting its biodegradability and low environmental impact compared to traditional sorbents. Factors influencing PAH adsorption, such as nanocomposite dosage, initial PAH concentration, pH, and contact time, were systematically investigated and optimized. The results revealed that optimal removal efficiencies were attained at an initial PAH concentration of 150 mg/L, a sorbent dose of 0.045 g, pH 6.0, and a contact time of 150 min. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model exhibited superior fitting to the experimental data, indicating an equilibrium time of approximately 150 min. Moreover, the equilibrium adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm model, with kf and n values exceeding 7.91 mg/g and 1.20, respectively. Remarkably, the maximum absorption capacities for phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene on the sorbent were determined as 217 mg/g, 204 mg/g, and 222 mg/g, respectively. These findings underscore the significant potential of the CS/MoS2/Fe3O4 nanocomposite for efficiently removing PAHs from milk and other dairy products, thereby contributing to improved food safety and public health.

Near-Infrared Light-Responsive Multifunctional Photothermal/Photodynamic Titanium Diboride Nanocomposites for the Treatment of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacterial Infections

Diseases caused by bacterial infection have resulted in serious harm to human health. It is crucial to develop a multifunctional antibiotic-independent antibacterial platform for combating drug-resistant bacteria. Herein, titanium diboride (TiB₂) nanosheets integrated with quaternized chitosan (QCS) and indocyanine green (ICG) were successfully prepared as a synergetic photothermal/photodynamic antibacterial nanoplatform (TiB₂-QCS-ICG). The TiB₂-QCS-ICG nanocomposites exhibit effective photothermal conversion efficiency (24.92%) and excellent singlet oxygen (¹O₂) production capacity simultaneously under 808 nm near-infrared irradiation. QCS improved TiB₂ stability and dispersion, while also enhancing adhesion to bacteria and further accelerating the destruction of bacteria by heat and ¹O₂. In vitro experiments indicated that TiB₂-QCS-ICG had excellent antibacterial properties with an inhibition rate of 99.99% against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), respectively. More importantly, in vivo studies revealed that the nanoplatform can effectively inhibit bacterial infection and accelerate wound healing. The effective wound healing rate in the TiB₂-QCS-ICG treatment group was 99.6% which was much higher than control groups. Taken together, the as-developed TiB₂-QCS-ICG nanocomposite provides more possibilities to develop metal borides for antibacterial infection applications.

Nanostructures as Photothermal Agents in Tumor Treatment

Traditional methods of tumor treatment such as surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy have certain limitations, and their treatment effects are not always satisfactory. As a new tumor treatment method, photothermal therapy based on nanostructures has attracted the attention of researchers due to its characteristics of minimally invasive, low side effects, and inhibition of cancer metastasis. In recent years, there has been a variety of inorganic or organic nanostructures used in the field of photothermal tumor treatment, and they have shown great application prospects. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of nanomaterials/nanostructures as photothermal agents (PTAs) for photothermal therapy as well as their research progress are reviewed. For the sake of clarity, the recently reported nanomaterials/nanostructures for photothermal therapy of tumor are classified into five main categories, i.e., carbon nanostructures, noble metal nanostructures, transition metal sulfides, organic polymer, and other nanostructures. In addition, future perspectives or challenges in the related field are discussed.

Intelligent Bi2Se3@Cu2-xSe heterostructures with enhanced photoabsorption and photoconversion efficiency for tri-modal imaging guided combinatorial cancer therapy by near-infrared Ⅱ light

A novel nanoplatform that supports multimodal imaging has been designed for deep tumor therapy. In this study, Bi₂Se₃@Cu_2-xSe heterojunction nanocomposites with tunable spectral absorption, effective electron-hole separation and high photothermal conversion efficiency were prepared for the combination therapy of phototherapy (PT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and radiotherapy (RT). By adjusting the doping ratio, the heterojunction nanoparticles show obvious tunable ability of local surface plasmon resonance and the ability to promote electron-hole separation with significantly enhanced reactive oxygen species production capacity. The band structure and charge density difference calculated by density functional theory further reveal that the change of band gap and the decrease of free carriers can regulate the spectral absorption of nanomaterials and promote electron-hole separation. In addition, the photothermal conversion properties of low carrier density semiconductors are related to their inherent deep level defects. The formation of heterojunctions making the Se atoms deviate from the Bi₂Se₃ lattice, resulting in more deep level defects and stronger photothermal conversion properties. Meanwhile, this nanoplatform presented features similar to catalase activities and glutathione (GSH) consumption characteristics, which was capable of effectively alleviate the tumor-specific hypoxia environment to enhance the efficacy of O₂-dependent photodynamic therapy (PDT) and radiotherapy (RT) and depletion GSH to prevent the reduction of therapeutic efficacy due to the clearance of reactive oxygen species. In addition to therapeutic enhancement, heterojunction nanomaterials have excellent nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), infrared thermal imaging (IR) and computed tomography (CT) properties due to their significant paramagnetism and excellent photothermal conversion and X-ray attenuation capacities. In conclusion, our findings provide a new strategy for designing multi-function and efficient nanoplatform to treat tumor.

Tumor Acidity and Near-Infrared Light Responsive Drug Delivery MoS2-Based Nanoparticles for Chemo-Photothermal Therapy

The rational design of tumor microenvironment (TME)- multifunctional stimuli-responsive nanocomposites is appealing for effective cancer treatment. However, multidrug resistance remains the main obstacles to construct responsive oncotherapy. Herein, a novel MoS₂/PDA-TPP nanocomposite loaded with chemotherapy drug of doxorubicin (DOX) is designed for TME dual-response and synergistically enhanced anti-tumor therapy based on the tumor-specific mitochondria accumulation ability and photothermal (PTT) therapy. In detail, the designed MoS₂/PDA-TPP nanoplatform can act as a pH-responsive dissociation to endow fast release of DOX under an acidic TME and simultaneously improve the efficiency of PTT. Moreover, the mechanism shows that MoS₂/PDA-TPP trigger mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Most importantly, during PTT procedure, hyperthermia up to 50°C can effectively induce tumor cell death without causing severe inflammation to adjacent tissues. Tumor targeting double stimulation response of nanocomposites is a novel idea to overcome drug resistance, which will provide a more effective strategy for solving practical problems.

MoS2-based nanocomposites for cancer diagnosis and therapy

Molybdenum is a trace dietary element necessary for the survival of humans. Some molybdenum-bearing enzymes are involved in key metabolic activities in the human body (such as xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase and sulfite oxidase). Many molybdenum-based compounds have been widely used in biomedical research. Especially, MoS2-nanomaterials have attracted more attention in cancer diagnosis and treatment recently because of their unique physical and chemical properties. MoS2 can adsorb various biomolecules and drug molecules via covalent or non-covalent interactions because it is easy to modify and possess a high specific surface area, improving its tumor targeting and colloidal stability, as well as accuracy and sensitivity for detecting specific biomarkers. At the same time, in the near-infrared (NIR) window, MoS2 has excellent optical absorption and prominent photothermal conversion efficiency, which can achieve NIR-based phototherapy and NIR-responsive controlled drug-release. Significantly, the modified MoS2-nanocomposite can specifically respond to the tumor microenvironment, leading to drug accumulation in the tumor site increased, reducing its side effects on non-cancerous tissues, and improved therapeutic effect. In this review, we introduced the latest developments of MoS2-nanocomposites in cancer diagnosis and therapy, mainly focusing on biosensors, bioimaging, chemotherapy, phototherapy, microwave hyperthermia, and combination therapy. Furthermore, we also discuss the current challenges and prospects of MoS2-nanocomposites in cancer treatment.

Recent advances in nanoparticles mediated photothermal therapy induced tumor regression

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a minimally invasive procedure for treating cancer. The two significant prerequisites of PTT are the photothermal therapeutic agent (PTA) and near-infrared radiation (NIR). The PTA absorbs NIR, causing hyperthermia in the malignant cells. This increased temperature at the tumor microenvironment finally results in tumor cell damage. Nanoparticles play a crucial role in PTT, aiding in the passive and active targeting of the PTA to the tumor microenvironment. Through enhanced permeation and retention effect and surface-engineering, specific targeting could be achieved. This novel delivery tool provides the advantages of changing the shape, size, and surface attributes of the carriers containing PTAs, which might facilitate tumor regression significantly. Further, inclusion of surface engineering of nanoparticles is facilitated through ligating ligands specific to overexpressed receptors on the cancer cell surface. Thus, transforming nanoparticles grants the ability to combine different treatment strategies with PTT to enhance cancer treatment. This review emphasizes properties of PTAs, conjugated biomolecules of PTAs, and the combinatorial techniques for a better therapeutic effect of PTT using the nanoparticle platform.

Molybdenum-based hetero-nanocomposites for cancer therapy, diagnosis and biosensing application: Current advancement and future breakthroughs

In recent years, there have been significant advancements in the nanotechnology for cancer therapy. Even though molybdenum disulphide (MoS2)-based nanocomposites demonstrated extensive applications in biosensing, bioimaging, phototherapy, the review article focusing on MoS2 nanocomposite platform has not been accounted for yet. The review summarizes recent strategies on design and fabrication of MoS2-based nanocomposites and their modulated properties in cancer treatment. The review also discussed several therapeutic strategies (photothermal, photodynamic, immunotherapy, gene therapy and chemotherapy) and their combinations for efficient cancer therapy along with certain case studies. The review also inculcates various diagnostic techniques viz. magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, photoacoustic imaging and fluorescence imaging for diagnosis of cancer.

Agricultural and Biomedical Applications of Chitosan-Based Nanomaterials

Chitosan has emerged as a biodegradable, nontoxic polymer with multiple beneficial applications in the agricultural and biomedical sectors. As nanotechnology has evolved as a promising field, researchers have incorporated chitosan-based nanomaterials in a variety of products to enhance their efficacy and biocompatibility. Moreover, due to its inherent antimicrobial and chelating properties, and the availability of modifiable functional groups, chitosan nanoparticles were also directly used in a variety of applications. In this review, the use of chitosan-based nanomaterials in agricultural and biomedical fields related to the management of abiotic stress in plants, water availability for crops, controlling foodborne pathogens, and cancer photothermal therapy is discussed, with some insights into the possible mechanisms of action. Additionally, the toxicity arising from the accumulation of these nanomaterials in biological systems and future research avenues that had gained limited attention from the scientific community are discussed here. Overall, chitosan-based nanomaterials show promising characteristics for sustainable agricultural practices and effective healthcare in an eco-friendly manner.
