Abstract
Water pollution caused by heavy metals is a major environmental problem, threatening water production, food safety, and human health. Cadmium (Cd) pollution is particularly serious because of food-chain biomagnification at toxic concentrations. Modified biochar is promising for heavy metal removal; however, efficient adsorbents for Cd removal are lacking. In the present study, a novel adsorbent, silica gel-modified biochar (SGB), was prepared and applied to treat sewage polluted by Cd. Through the batch adsorption experiments, it is known that SGB possessed outstanding Cd removal ability and recycleability. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior and mechanisms were analyzed by the application of kinetic and isotherm models. The maximum Cd2+ adsorption capacity of SGB was 38.08 mg g-1, and after five recycling processes, the Cd2+ removal rate was still 86.89 %. When the pH of the solution was 7.0, SGB showed the strongest Cd2+ adsorption capacity (29.06 mg g-1). When competitive ions existed, biochar also had high Cd removal efficiency, although the effect of Pb2+ was greater than those of Cu2+ and Zn2+, indicating that SGB was applicable to complex polluted water. Additionally, the main Cd2+ adsorption mechanisms by SGB were electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, complexation, and co-precipitation. These results showed that SGB can effectively treat Cd-contaminated wastewater as a new adsorbent.

Abstract
This study presents an assessment of inorganic and organic modification of biochar on physicochemical properties, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release, sorption efficiency towards enrofloxacin (E) and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), as well as an evaluation of addition of prepared materials on hydro-physical properties and adsorption capacity of montmorillonite (M). The biochar was derived from wheat straw at 650 °C. An inorganic modification was performed using ammonia hydroxide, whereas an organic modification, using citric acid. The ammonia hydroxide and citric acid changed the biochar nature and surface chemistry by introducing amino and ester groups. The lowest DOC release was from ammonia-biochar (BCN) and the highest, from citric acid-biochar (BCC). The adsorption data were better described by pseudo-II order equation and Marczewski-Jaroniec isotherm. Results showed that BCN exhibited the highest efficiency in adsorption of E and Ag-NPs. It also improved the adsorptive abilities and saturated hydraulic conductivity of M. This provides the chemically modified biochars have an excellent potential to improve pollution removal from aqueous media and hydro-physical/sorption properties of soil sorption complex. They can be used with advantageous in environmental applications.

Abstract
To enhance the adsorption performance of municipal sludge biochar on Cd(II), modified sludge biochar was prepared by sodium hydroxide/magnesium chloride (NaOH/MgCl2) graded activation, and the Cd(II) adsorption performance on sludge biochar (BC), NaOH-activated sludge biochar (NBC) and NaOH/MgCl2 activated sludge biochar (NBC-Mg) was investigated. The results showed that NaOH/MgCl2 graded activation upgraded the surface structure and enhanced the graphitization of sludge biochar. The adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm for Cd(II) were in accordance with the pseudo second-order kinetic and Langmuir model. The adsorption capacity of NBC-Mg (143.49 mg/g) for Cd(II) was higher than that of BC (50.40 mg/g) and NBC (85.20 mg/g). The mechanism of Cd(II) adsorption included ion exchange, complexation, cation-π interaction, and mineral precipitation. After five regeneration, the removal efficiency of Cd(II) by NBC-Mg remained above 90%. This work indicated that sludge biochar prepared by multistage activation could be an effective material for Cd-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Traditional pyrolysis biochar has been widely employed to treat dye wastewater. However, there are some problems in the pyrolysis process, such as the generation of harmful gases and the low content of silico-oxygen functional groups to promote adsorption. Straw biochar (Ac-BCbm) was prepared by sulfuric acid co-ball milling method. The adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of rhodamine B (RhB) under different preparation conditions and factors were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption rate of Ac-BCbm on RhB was up to 94.9%, which was 60.5% and 55.8% higher than that of ball-milling straw (STbm) and biochar prepared by pyrolysis (STBC600), respectively. The Ac-BCbm had better adaptability under different pH and common interfering ions for remove RhB. Characterization and DFT simulation analysis revealed that the sulfuric acid co-ball milling process promoted the formation of Si-OH and Si-O-CH3 oxygen-containing functional groups of Si component in straw, which enhanced the hydrogen bonding interactions and effectively improved the adsorption efficiency. This study investigated a new strategy for biochar preparation by sulfuric acid co-ball milling, which provides an additional development direction for the efficient resource utilization of straw.

Abstract
Here, Fe/N co-doped porous biochars (FeNKBCs) were obtained by grinding corncob, CH3COOK, FeCl3·6H2O, and C3H6N6 via one-step synthesis and were applied to remove antibiotics from wastewater. Notably, CH3COOK had an excellent porous activation ability. The developed nanotubular structure of Fe1N2KBC had a high pore volume (Vtotal) (1.2131 cm3/g) and specific surface areas (SSA) (2083.54 m2/g), which showed outstanding sorption abilities for TC (764.35 mg/g), OTC (560.82 mg/g), SMX (291.45 mg/g), and SMT (354.65 mg/g). The adsorption process of TC was controlled by chemisorption. Moreover, Fe1N2KBC has an excellent dynamic adsorption performance (620.14 mg/g) in a fixed-bed column. The properties of SSA, Vtotal, and the content of graphite N and Fe-N were positively correlated with TC adsorption capacity. The high performance of TC removal was related to π-π stacking, pore-filling, hydrogen bond, and electrostatic interaction. Fe1N2KBC possessed stable sorption amounts in pH 2-12 and actual water, and well reuse performance. The results of this work present an effective preparation method of Fe/N porous biochar for TC-contaminated water remediation.

Abstract
Biochar in powder could lead to the separation difficulties after using and easy dispersion by wind with non-necessary consumption during the practical application. The current method for preparing molded biochar is multi-step, tedious, and required exogenous reagents. Moreover, the dehydration of sewage sludge with high water content (>85%) causes expensive production cost, limiting its secondary utilization. Therefore, an "all-in-one" strategy was developed to prepare molded biochar with magnetism by using sewage sludge as endogenetic binder, water source, carbon source, as well as magnetic source, and biomass wastes as water moderator and pore-forming agent. The molded biochar showed high removal capacity towards Cd(Ⅱ) of 456.2 mg/g, which was 6 times higher than the commercial activated carbon in powder (69.1 mg/g). The excellent removal performance of the molded biochar was in linear correlation the O/C ratio (R2 =0.855), resulting in the complexation with Cd(Ⅱ). DFT calculations indicated the amounts and species of oxygen changed the electron distribution and electron-donation properties of biochar for Cd(Ⅱ). Moreover, the Na+ exchanges with Cd(Ⅱ) were also an important removal mechanism. This study provided a novel synthesis strategy for the molded biochar with both high particle density and high adsorption capability.

Abstract
Biochar (BC) is a carbonaceous material produced by pyrolysis of biomass, applied in various areas such as water purification, fuel production, soil amendment, etc. Many types of BC are characterized by insufficient textural parameters or poor surface chemistry, and hence by low adsorption capacity. This makes innovative chemical methods increasing BC ability to remove xenobiotics from aquatic environments highly needed. Many of them have already been described in the literature. This review presents them in detail and evaluates their effectiveness in improving textural parameters, surface chemistry, and adsorption capacity of BC.
