Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to analyze the oral health status of four different birth cohorts: two cohorts of 60-year-olds born in 1941-1943 and 1954-1955 and 2 cohorts of 81-year-olds born in 1920-1922 and 1933-1934. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was based on data from an ongoing longitudinal population project, The Swedish National Study on Aging and Care (SNAC). Oral health status was repeatedly examined clinically and radiographically in 2001-2003 and 2014-2015, including 60- and 81-year-olds, in total 412 individuals. Statistical analyses were performed using independent-samples t test and Pearson's χ2 test. RESULTS More individuals were dentate in 2014-2015 compared to 2001-2003 in the two age groups: 60 and 81 years (p < 0.001 for both). The mean number of teeth increased in the 60-year-olds from 24.2 to 27.0 and in the 81-year-olds from 14.3 to 20.2. The numbers of at least one intact tooth increased for both age groups (p < 0.001 and p < 0.004, respectively). In the age groups 81 years, there was an increase in having at least one PPD ≥ 6 mm (p < 0.016) and bone loss ≥ 5 mm (p < 0.029) between the two examinations. No such differences were found in the age groups of 60 years. CONCLUSION Over 13 years, oral health improved for both 60- and 81-year-old age groups. The most significant changes were in the 81-year-olds where oral health had improved except for periodontal status. CLINICAL RELEVANCE More natural teeth and impaired periodontal status potentially impact oral health and should increase focus on preventive and supportive dental care in older individuals.

Abstract
Background The present study evaluated the prevalence of severe periodontitis (SP) and determined the possible relevant risk factors among patients referred to the Periodontology Department at the Dental Care Center of the Odontostomatology Training and Research Unit of Abidjan, in Côte d'Ivoire. Methods This retrospective observational study was based on 1087 patients data aged 18‒80 years, who were treated in the periodontology department from December 2008 to December 2018. Severe periodontitis (stages III or IV) was defined as interdental clinical attachment loss (CAL)>5 mm at two non-adjacent teeth. Two groups were considered: patients with severe periodontitis (test) or without severe periodontitis (control). Differences between the two groups were tested using the chi-squared test and ANOVA. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis was used to model the relationship between the severity of periodontitis and covariables as potential risk indicators. Results 43.4% of patients had severe periodontitis with a mean CAL of 6.89 mm. SP was associated with age (P=0.004), socioeconomic status (P=0.005), smoking habits (P=0.000), brushing frequency (P=0.000), the number of mobile teeth (P<0.001), and the number of lost teeth (P<0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that having at least five mobile teeth (OR= 4.11, 95% CI: 2.95‒5.73) and/or five missing teeth (OR=2.60, 95% CI: 1.85‒3.66) were independent risk indicators for severe periodontal disease. Conclusion This Ivorian sample presented a high prevalence of severe periodontal diseases. Therefore, proper public health measures would allow early detection, with targeted and effective treatment of the Ivorian population.

Abstract
To investigate whether dental status, represented by the DMFT score, was affected by the presence of NCDs and determined the NCDs that had a greater impact on the DMFT score. This retrospective cross-sectional study included a total of 10,017 individuals. The presence of NCDs was investigated based on self-reported medical history recorded on each patient's dental hospital record. Individual DMFT score was evaluated on the basis of the dental records and panoramic radiographs. The data were further analyzed using multiple regression analysis and chi-squared automatic interaction detection (CHAID) analysis. A total of 5,388 individuals had more than one NCD among hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and osteoporosis. The average DMFT score was 8.62 ± 7.10 in the NCD group, significantly higher than that in those without NCD (5.53 ± 5.48) (P < 0.001). In the regression analysis, age, NCDs, and psychiatric problems were selected as risk factors of DMFT score. In the CHAID decision tree analysis, age was the risk factor that most influenced the DMFT score. HT was the most influential factor in a newly generated decision tree excluding age, and osteoporosis, DM, and CVD were important risk factors acting in the subgroups. Patients with NCD had worse dental conditions than those who did not, and some combinations of NCDs related highest risk for a dental caries-related index. In clinical practice, dentists should provide meticulous care for dental caries in elderly patients with NCDs, especially when certain diseases, such as HT, osteoporosis, DM, and CVD, are present together.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries and periodontitis are the most common oral diseases and major causes of tooth loss. AIM To perform a review of global prevalence and incidence of dental caries and periodontitis. METHODOLOGY Inclusion and exclusion criteria were developed. MEDLINE database and EMBASE database were used to search for eligible publications using keywords and MeSH terms. Additionally, WHO databank was used for obtaining dental caries information and PUBMED for a search on trends of dental caries prevalence and severity. RESULTS Over the last four decades, the prevalence and severity of dentine carious lesions among 5- and 12-year-olds have declined; the decay-component is very high, with the lowest prevalence among 12-year-olds in high-income countries, which also had the lowest prevalence among 35- to 44-year-olds; and the number of retained teeth has increased around the globe. The prevalence of periodontitis is high, with approximately 10% of the global population affected by severe periodontitis. Study heterogeneity and methodological issues hamper comparisons across studies and over time. CONCLUSION While the prevalence of dental caries has decreased, the disease is prevalent in all age groups. The prevalence of periodontitis is high. There is insufficient evidence to conclude that the prevalence of periodontitis has changed over time.

Abstract
Proportion data with support lying in the interval [0,1] are a commonplace in various domains of medicine and public health. When these data are available as clusters, it is important to correctly incorporate the within-cluster correlation to improve the estimation efficiency while conducting regression-based risk evaluation. Furthermore, covariates may exhibit a nonlinear relationship with the (proportion) responses while quantifying disease status. As an alternative to various existing classical methods for modeling proportion data (such as augmented Beta regression) that uses maximum likelihood, or generalized estimating equations, we develop a partially linear additive model based on the quadratic inference function. Relying on quasi-likelihood estimation techniques and polynomial spline approximation for unknown nonparametric functions, we obtain the estimators for both parametric part and nonparametric part of our model and study their large-sample theoretical properties. We illustrate the advantages and usefulness of our proposition over other alternatives via extensive simulation studies, and application to a real dataset from a clinical periodontal study.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of various workplace parameters and oral health behaviors on tooth decay, periodontal disease, and the number of teeth present in industrial workers. The study participants were 1,078 workers (808 males, 270 females, mean age 42.8 ± 11.4 yr) employed at 11 different workplaces. Oral examinations and a self-administered questionnaire were conducted for participants. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors related to their oral health status. Factors significantly associated with decayed teeth were smoking (OR=2.02), not having received tooth brushing instruction (OR=1.73), not having annual dental examinations (OR=1.64) and not brushing before sleeping (OR=0.55). The factors significantly associated with severe periodontal disease were employment with a company with fewer than 50 employees (OR=15.56) and not brushing teeth before bedtime (OR=2.41). The factors significantly associated with having 23 teeth or fewer were subjects in the education and learning support industry compared with manufacturing industry (OR=5.83) and transport industry (OR=12.01). The results of the present study showed that various occupational parameters and health behaviors are associated with oral health status including tooth decay, periodontal disease, and tooth loss.

Abstract
This study sought to establish the association between tooth loss due to dental caries and variables related to access to information on oral health in adults aged 35-44 years (n = 780) who participated in a large epidemiological study. The dependent variable was total tooth loss due to caries. The independent variables were grouped into blocks: demographic and socio-economic characteristics, use of dental service, access to oral health information (about how to prevent oral problems; oral hygiene; and diet), and behaviors. The analysis was conducted using hierarchical multiple linear regression. The mean number of lost teeth due to caries was 7.03. High numbers of lost teeth were higher among females and older adults; low levels of education; adults who rarely/never received oral hygiene information; those who brushed their teeth once a day or less; and those adults who did not use dental floss (p < 0.05). Adults who rarely/never received oral hygiene information from dental services lost 2.15 more teeth due to caries than those who always/often received such information (p = 0,000). Thus, it is suggested that access to information should be encouraged to contribute to greater equity in oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the increasing number of older people, there is a need for studies focused on this population. The aims of the present study are to assess oral and systemic conditions in individuals aged 60 to 95 years with access to dental insurance. METHODS Probing depths (PDs), tooth loss, alveolar bone levels, and systemic health were studied among a representative cohort of older individuals. RESULTS A total of 1,147 individuals in young-old (aged 60 or 67 years), old (aged 72 or 78 years), and old-old (aged ≥81 years) age groups were enrolled, including 200 individuals who were edentulous, in this study. Annual dental care was received by 82% of dentate individuals. Systemic diseases were common (diabetes: 5.8%; cardiovascular diseases: 20.7%; obesity: 71.2%; elevated C-reactive protein [CRP]: 98.4%). Serum CRP values were unrelated to periodontal conditions. Rates of periodontitis, defined as ≥30% of sites with a distance from cemento-enamel junction to bone of ≥5 mm, were 11.2% in women in the young-old age group and 44.9% in men in the old-old age group. Individuals in older age groups had a higher likelihood of periodontitis defined by bone loss and cutoff levels of PD ≥5 mm (odds ratio: 1.8; 95% confidence interval: 1.2 to 2.5; P <0.01). A total of 7% of individuals in the old-old age group had ≥20 teeth and no periodontitis. Systemic diseases, dental use, or smoking were not explanatory, whereas age and sex were explanatory for periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of periodontitis increased with age. Sex seems to be the dominant explanatory factor for periodontitis in older individuals. Despite frequent dental visits, overall oral health in the oldest age cohort was poor.
