Abstract
Introduction Mandible distraction osteogenesis (MDO) is widely used to reconstruct the mandible in patients with mild Hemifacial microsomia (HFM). However, the masseter's response to mandible distraction remains unclear. Methods In this study, we analyze the effect of the surgical intervention on masseter muscle by a retrospective analysis. The procedure consisted of a five-day latent period, a three-week distraction period, and a six-month consolidation period. CT data were manually segmented and measured with Mimics software before surgery, within 3 months, and more than 1 year postoperatively. Masseter volume, masseter length, masseter width, and mandible ramus height were measured and analyzed using paired t-test, Pearson, and Spearman correlation analysis. Results We included 21 patients with HFM who underwent mandible distraction osteogenesis from 2015 to 2020. The masseter volume on the affected side increased immediately after surgery from (6,505.33 ± 3,671.95) mm3 to (10,194.60 ± 5638.79) mm3, but decreased to (8,148.38 ± 3,472.57) mm3 at the second follow-up correlated to mandible ramus height (r = 0.395, P = 0.038). A similar trend was observed in changes in masseter length. Symmetry and width of masseter muscle had no longitudinal statistical significance. Discussion Masseter muscle involvement benefits from MDO in the short term. To achieve long-term efficacy, more attention should be paid to muscle reconstruction.

Abstract
The need to increase the Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (VDO) to restore lost dental function or optimise specific dental treatments is a common occurrence in daily dental practice. The common belief that the Vertical Dimension at Rest (VDR) is fixed hinders the development of restorations with a VDO that encroaches on or surpasses the interocclusal rest space (IRS), thereby preventing potential tissue damage to the masticatory apparatus. Recent studies have shown that the mandible rest position falls within a range termed as the "comfort zone". The range of this zone may vary from one person to another and within the same person over time due to factors such as age or health status. In this review, we have concluded that a permanent increase in the VDO, once indicated, is a safe procedure for dentulous patients. However, it is important to minimise the extent of the increase to simplify the prosthodontics treatment process. An inter-incisal increase exceeding 5 mm is seldom needed. Moreover, it is important to consider the functional, aesthetic, and biological elements associated with VDO. The biological and functional environment closely related to the VDO had great adaptive capacities, which have for a historically been underestimated. Patient adaptation has been observed in dentate patients, edentulous patients, and even cases involving implant-supported prostheses. Muscle relaxation and changes in muscle length are likely the primary adaptation mechanisms, rather than the restoration of the original VDO through dentoalveolar maturation. Intervention with a fixed restoration is more predictable and results in a higher and more rapid level of adaptation. Finally, the increase should include the entire arch to prevent relapse of the VDO to its previous value, and changes in VDO should be assessed by utilising temporary diagnostic restorations for a period before implementing definitive prostheses, in order to evaluate the adaptive muscle response.

Abstract
Background. Establishing an accurate occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) is a crucial clinical step during full-mouth rehabilitation. Various techniques have been suggested to evaluate OVD, but none of them is practically reliable, and each one has its shortcomings. The correlation between facial proportions and the lower third of the face is a reliable method but needs to be verified in many ethnic groups. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the correlation between OVD and various facial measurements in a Tunisian ethnic group. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2020 to January 2021. The participants were randomly selected from dental students, dental surgeons, and the patients referring to the University Dental Clinic for dental treatments. Seven facial measurements were clinically recorded using a digital caliper. The correlation between OVD and facial measurements was analyzed using Spearman's coefficient and linear regression analysis. Results. A total of 201 dentate participants (134 females and 67 males) were included in the study. The mean OVD in male subjects was higher (67.60±4.49) compared to female subjects (60.72±3.84). The total facial height was positively correlated with OVD in both genders. OVD was statistically correlated with the height of the upper lip. This correlation was highly significant in males while it was weak in the female group. Conclusion. Facial proportions and linear equations are non-invasive, simple, and reliable methods to predict OVD, especially in males.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to define changes in the rat condylar cartilage and subchondral bone using the unilateral mastication model. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, forty 4-week-old Wistar rats were randomly divided into experimental (n = 20) and control group (n = 20). In the experimental group, unilateral dental splints were placed on the occlusal surface of left maxillary molars. The rats were sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after placement of the splint. Micro-CT scanning and histological staining were performed to observe the changes in the mandibular condylar cartilage and subchondral bone. Levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were determined via immunohistochemistry to analyse the occurrence of osteogenic changes. RESULTS Micro-CT scanning findings demonstrated the occurrence of asymmetric growth of condyle in the experimental group. The condylar cartilage and subchondral bone exhibited degradation on the chewing side of the experimental group and showed decreased bone mineral density, thinner cartilage thickness, and increased degree of degeneration and osteoclast activity. Compared with the control group, the expression of IGF-1 was remarkably higher on the non-chewing side. CONCLUSION Long-term unilateral mastication can lead to the occurrence of degenerative changes in the condylar cartilage and subchondral bone during growth and development. IGF-1 may play a role in promoting the process of osteogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Determining and restoring physiological vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is the critical step during complete mouth rehabilitation. The improper VDO compromises the aesthetics, phonetics and functional efficiency of the prosthesis. Various methods are suggested to determine the accurate VDO, including the facial measurements in the clinical situations with no pre-extraction records. The generalisation of correlation between the facial measurements to VDO is criticised due to gender dimorphism and racial differences. Hence, it is prudent to verify the hypothesis of facial proportion and correlation of lower third of the face to remaining craniofacial measurements in different ethnic groups. The objective of the study was to evaluate the correlation of craniofacial measurements and OVD in the Saudi-Arabian ethnic group. METHODOLOGY Total of 228 participants from Saudi-Arabian Ethnic group were randomly recruited in this cross-sectional study. Fifteen craniofacial measurements were recorded with modified digital Vernier callipers, and OVD was recorded at centric occlusion. The obtained data were analysed by using the Spearman's correlation and linear regression analysis. RESULTS The Mean OVD in male participants was higher (69.25 ± 5.54) in comparison to female participants (57.41 ± 5.32). The craniofacial measurement of Exocanthion-right labial commissure and the Mesial wall of the right external auditory canal-orbitale lateral had a strong positive correlation with VDO. The strong correlation was recorded with a trichion-upper border of right eyebrow line and trichion-Nasion only in males. Meanwhile, the length of an auricle recorded the positive correlation in female participants. CONCLUSIONS Being simple and non-invasive technique, craniofacial measurements and linear equations could be routinely utilised to determine VDO.
