Abstract
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes participate in collagen matrix degradation, including in dentine, potentially compromising bond strength. Therefore, MMP inhibitors have been hypothesized to improve restoration bond strength and stability. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the influence of different MMP inhibitors applied as dentine surface pretreatments on the immediate (24 hours) and longer term (months) bond strength of direct coronal composite restorations. This systematic literature review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. A systematic literature search of three databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and Google Scholar) was conducted independently by two reviewers from inception to April 2022. An adapted quality assessment tool was independently applied by two reviewers for risk of bias assessment. RevMan v5.4 software was used for meta-analyses. A randomeffectsmodel was used to generatemean differences with 95% confidence intervals for treatment and control comparisons. The Q-test and I2-test were used to test for heterogeneity. The proportion of total variance across studies attributable to heterogeneity rather than chance was calculated. Overall effects were tested using the Z-test, while subgroup differences were tested using Chi-squared tests. Of 934 studies, 64 studies were included in the systematic review and 42 in the meta-analysis. Thirty-one MMP inhibitors were reported, three of which were included in the meta-analysis: 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 0.3M carbodiimide (EDC), and 0.1% riboflavin (RIBO). Pretreatment with 2% CHX for 30 and 60 seconds did not significantly improve bond strength compared with controls either immediately or after long-termageing. However, pretreatment with 0.3MEDC and 0.1% RIBO (but not CHX) significantly improved bond strength compared with control groups both immediately and over time. Most studies showed a medium risk of bias. These in vitro findings pave the way for rationale clinical trialing of dentine surface pretreatment with MMP inhibitors to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the role of crosslinking agents in the resin–dentin bond strength (BS) when used as modifiers in adhesives or pretreatments to the dentin surface through a systematic review and meta-analysis. This paper was conducted according to the directions of the PRISMA 2020 statement. The research question of this review was: “Would the use of crosslinkers agents improve the BS of resin-based materials to dentin?” The literature search was conducted in the following databases: Embase, PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of Science. Manuscripts that reported the effect on the BS after the use of crosslinking agents were included. The meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager v5.4.1. The comparisons were performed by comparing the standardized mean difference between the BS values obtained using the crosslinker agent or the control group. The subgroup comparisons were performed based on the adhesive strategy used (total-etch or self-etch). The immediate and long-term data were analyzed separately. A total of 50 articles were included in the qualitative analysis, while 45 articles were considered for the quantitative analysis. The meta-analysis suggested that pretreatment with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), carbodiimide, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), glutaraldehyde, and riboflavin crosslinking agents improved the long-term BS of resin composites to dentin (p ≤ 0.02). On the other hand, the use of proanthocyanidins as a pretreatment improved both the immediate and long-term BS values (p ≤ 0.02). When incorporated within the adhesive formulation, only glutaraldehyde, riboflavin, and EGCG improved the long-term BS to dentin. It could be concluded that the application of different crosslinking agents such as carbodiimide, EDTA, glutaraldehyde, riboflavin, and EGCG improved the long-term BS of adhesive systems to dentin. This effect was observed when these crosslinkers were used as a separate step and when incorporated within the formulation of the adhesive system.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the morphology and immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9, TIMP-3, COL-I, TNF-alfa and COX-2 in the dentinopulp complex of restorations with self adhesive composite (Vertise Flow/Kerr) compared with conventional resin composite with self-etching adhesive (Filtek Z250/3M ESPE and Clearfil SE Bond/Kuraray-Noritake). Material and Methods A randomized, controlled, double-blind, split-mouth, two-arm clinical trial was conducted. Twenty-seven volunteers with third molars indicated for extraction received two deep class I restorations, one with each material. The morphology and immunohistochemical expression were measured at 15 days after the restorative procesures. The data were submitted to the Fisher`s Exct test (α=0.05). Results Through morphological analysis, a slight disorganization of the odontoblastic layer was visualized, along with a slight inflammatory infiltrate in the VERT and CSEB groups (p< 0.05). In immunohistochemical analysis, TNF-alpha, MMP-9, TIMP-3 and COX-2 demonstrated more cases of positive pulp labeling. Conclusions Self-adhesive resin composite and conventional resin composite with a self-etching bonding agent promoted slight alterations in the dentin-pulp complex, indicating a repair ability and reversibility of the inflammatory process against aggressions of the adhesive restorative procedure. Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the effect of the caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) as a root canal irrigation agent on the push-out bond strength of the AH-Plus sealer. Materials and Methods: A total of 75 single-rooted teeth were decoronated and were randomly divided into 5 groups of 15 roots for irrigation protocols: Group NaOCl: 5.25 percent NaOCl; Group CAPE: 0.5 percent CAPE; Group NaOCl + ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA): 5.25 percent NaOCl-17 percent EDTA; Group NaOCl + CAPE: 5.25 percent NaOCl-0.5 percent CAPE; and Group CAPE + EDTA: 0.5 percent CAPE-17 percent EDTA (for 3 min each group). All root canals were then obturated and 1-mm-thick horizontal slices were obtained from different root thirds of the root canal (coronal, middle, and apical, respectively). The groups were challenged with push-out tests. Modes of failure were determined under a stereomicroscope. Results: The CAPE-EDTA-treated group presented the highest mean bond strength in the coronal region of root dentin ( P < .05). The CAPE-treated group had a higher mean bond strength than the NaOCl-treated group ( P < .05). The mixed mode of failure was most predominant in all groups. Conclusion: Under the presented in vitro conditions, CAPE alone or in combination with EDTA or NaOCl demonstrated a positive effect that increased the push-out bond strength of the AH-Plus sealer to root dentin.
