Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that chewing is a mechanical and physiological contributor to swallowing, physiologic/pathologic processes of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), and nutrition-related factors. A search strategy was applied to three different databases to investigate if chewing function in adults affects the swallowing, physiologic/pathologic processes of the GIT, and nutrition-related factors compared to controls with no exposure. The included studies were evaluated for methodological quality and risk of bias and certainty of evidence. The results showed 71 eligible studies. Overall, the results showed that 46 studies supported the hypothesis while 25 refuted it. However, the GRADE analysis showed low to very low certainty of the evidence to support the hypothesis that chewing is an important contributor in the swallowing process, and physiologic/pathologic processes in the GIT. The GRADE analysis also showed a moderate to very low certainty of the evidence to suggest that chewing function contributes to nutrition-related parameters. The overall results of the current study showed that a majority (64.7%) of the studies (46 out of 71) supported the hypothesis. However, robust studies with proper design, adequate sample size, and well-defined outcome parameters are needed to establish conclusive evidence.

Abstract
The understanding of the relationship between orofacial structures and feeding habits in preschoolers is helpful for health professionals and those dedicated to food science. The hypothesis tested was whether this relationship is already present even at a very young age. This cross-sectional study included 91 healthy caries-free children (50 girls/41 boys; 3.4-6.2 years; mean 4.1 years) and a comprehensive evaluation of the stomatognathic system was performed: dietary intake, facial and occlusal morphology, gustatory sensitivity, bite and lip forces, and orofacial myofunctional aspects (mastication, swallowing and breathing functions). Principal component analysis summarized the variables related to the form and function of the orofacial aspects; further, K-means analysis identified two clusters of participants with similar aspects. Cluster 1 ("Low orofacial myofunctional functioning"; n = 51) was characterized by children who showed the worst performance of mastication, swallowing and breathing functions and whose parents reported the consumption of sweets, cookies, chocolate, but not fresh fruits the day before, in addition to the higher bottle-feeding and pacifier use duration. This cluster also showed higher sweet taste threshold. Cluster 2 ("High orofacial myofunctional functioning"; n = 40) showed lower bottle-feeding and pacifier use duration, higher gustatory sensitivity, greater maxillo-mandibular dimensions, and better orofacial function performance. The variables sex and BMI did not associate to clusters profile. The frequencies of open bite and current sucking habit (pacifier) also differed between clusters. The results showed that an association between form and function of the structures that comprise the stomatognathic system and dietary intake is already present in children with primary dentition.

Abstract
PURPOSE Maintaining good masticatory function from a young age promotes lifelong health, yet limited studies have explored masticatory performance in young individuals. We investigated the relationship of sex, age, and individual oral functions with masticatory performance among junior and senior high school students and young adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included students aged 12-13, 14-15, and 16-17 years (groups S1, S2, and S3, respectively) and young adults aged 20-40 years (group YA). We assessed oral functions, the number of functional teeth, and anthropometric measurements. Masticatory performance was evaluated using color-changeable chewing gum. We analyzed sex-related differences in each group and age-related differences in each sex. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed using masticatory performance as the dependent variable to investigate related factors. RESULTS Among the 522 children and 100 young adults, males exhibited significantly higher masticatory performance than females in groups S1, S3, and YA. Among males, groups S2, S3, and YA exhibited significantly higher masticatory performance than group S1. Among females, group S2 exhibited higher masticatory performance than groups S1 and S3. Male sex, the maximum occlusal force and tongue pressure, and the number of functional teeth were significantly correlated with masticatory performance. CONCLUSIONS Masticatory function development differed by sex, with males exhibiting higher masticatory performance than females. We identified that male sex, the maximum occlusal force and tongue pressure, and the number of functional teeth were significantly associated with masticatory performance. Our findings provide a basis for masticatory performance assessment in different age groups.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the estimated number of older adults is around 962 million and is projected to increase to 2.1 billion by 2050. The oral frailty concept is associated with gradual oral function loss in relation to aging. There is a need to emphasize the improvement of oral function based on an evaluation of masticatory performance in patients with various oral conditions or systemic diseases and especially in the frail elderly. The present narrative review presents an overview of the current state of the assessment and improvement of masticatory performance in frail older people. To fully encompass oral frailty, oro-facial hypofunction, or oro-facial fitness, dental Patient Reported Outcomes (dPROs) should be included; nevertheless, there are limited evidence-based rehabilitation approaches. The concept of oral frailty, oro-facial hypofunction, or oro-facial fitness should involve dental Patient Reported Outcomes (dPROs), and in this sense, there are only a few evidence-based rehabilitation procedures to improve oro-facial hypofunction besides prosthodontics. It must be considered that reduced neuroplastic capacity in old individuals might preclude a positive outcome of these strategies that might need to be accompanied by functional training and nutritional counseling.

Abstract
This study aimed to clarify the relationship between age and occlusal force in adults with natural dentition. A total of 385 adults (180 males and 205 females) with natural dentition participated in this study. Subjects were asked to perform maximum clenching for approximately 3 s, and the occlusal forces on both sides and habitual chewing side were calculated using a dental prescale. Regression analysis was performed by sex with occlusal forces on both sides and habitual chewing side as the dependent variable and age as the independent variable. In addition, all subjects were divided into three groups: young group (20-39 years), middle group (40-59 years), and old group (60 years and over), and the occlusal forces on both sides and habitual chewing side were compared among the three groups. The occlusal forces did not differ from 20 to 60 years old for both males and females, and the occlusal forces gradually decreased after 60 years old. The curve of the polynomial equation was the most suitable. The occlusal forces on both sides and the habitual chewing side were similar in the young and middle groups, and the values of the old group were significantly smaller than those of the other two groups. From these results, it was suggested that the occlusal force of adults with natural dentition does not differ from 20 to 60 years old and can be represented by a curve of a cubic polynomial, and it significantly decreases after 60 years old.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Present a gnathodynamometer design that increases patient comfort, precision, and/or ease for the operator during bite force tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS A bite tip capable of pivoting 180° was tested on senior dental students in a double-blind trial. The tests were performed in teeth 11 and 16 with the bite tip on the long axis of the clamp and at an angle of 90° to the clamp. The sample was composed of 24 students, 13 males and 11 females, randomly divided into two groups: the operator group (OP), which was composed of 12 students, 7 males and 5 females, and the test group (TI), which was composed of 12 students, 6 males and 6 females. The operator and participants were asked to evaluate comfort and precision/ease in positioning the bite tip by attributing scores from 0 (total discomfort) to 10 (total comfort) during the test. RESULTS No difference was noted in tooth 11 (P > 0.05). In tooth 16, there was a statistically significant improvement (P < 0.01) for the participants tested and the operator using the pivoting bite tip. CONCLUSIONS The pivoting bite tip showed no difference in the comfort of the participants and operator precision when testing incisors; however, the tip showed a difference for both conditions in the molar region. The gnathodynamometer geometry showed good results in participant comfort and operator precision when used in bite force tests of the incisors and molars. Further investigations are needed to confirm whether these improvements influence the mean value and maximum bite force measurement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Bite force measurement is a method for obtaining important data to check the functional conditions of the stomatognathic system. With the aging of the world population, it has become important to check the quality of life during aging. The pivoting bite tip improves the comfort and precision of bite tests for the participants tested and for the operator, respectively.

Effects of Developmental Failure of Swallowing Threshold on Obesity and Eating Behaviors in Children Aged 5-15 Years. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14132614. Abstract
Background: The aim of the present study was to identify factors related to developmental failure of swallowing threshold in children aged 5−15 years. Methods: A total of 83 children aged 5−15 years were included in this study. A self-administered lifestyle questionnaire was completed, along with hand grip strength and oral function tests. Swallowing threshold was determined based on the concentration of dissolved glucose obtained from gummy jellies when the participants signaled that they wanted to swallow the chewed gummy jellies. Developmental failure of swallowing threshold was defined as glucose concentrations in the lowest 20th percentile. After univariate analysis, multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with developmental failure of swallowing threshold. Results: Hand grip strength was significantly correlated with masticatory performance (r = 0.611, p < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis revealed factors related to developmental failure of swallowing threshold, i.e., overweight/obesity (Odds ratio) (OR) = 5.343, p = 0.031, 95% CI = 1.168−24.437) and eating between meals at least once a day (OR = 4.934, p = 0.049, 95% CI = 1.004−24.244). Conclusions: Developmental failure of swallowing threshold was closely associated with childhood obesity in 5- to 15-year-old children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Failure to catch up with growth in toddlerhood will stunt elementary school children, which continues to cognitive decline and oral motor coordination. Verbal motor skills play an essential role in the oral function of the stomatognathic system, which includes mastication, swallowing, and speech. Therefore, early attention to oral function disorders of the stomatognathic system can avoid complications in children's nutritional status and quality of life. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to analyze the correlation of oral function of the stomatognathic system with Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in stunting children. METHODS This cross-sectional study correlates with 58 children aged 7-12 years with a history of stunting in toddlerhood from the Pasir Jambu District, Bandung Regency. The oral function of the stomatognathic system was evaluated by Adapted Orofacial Myofunctional Assessment Protocol and OHRQoL with Child Oral Health Impact Profile Short Form (COHIP-SF 19). RESULTS The results were statistically analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation and Kendall's coefficient of concordance correlation tests. The results showed that the research subjects had a significant relationship in each variable and the three variables of the oral function of the stomatognathic system (chewing, swallowing, and speech) with OHRQoL with a p-value <0.05. The study concluded that the oral function of the stomatognathic system (chewing, swallowing, and speech) is related to OHRQoL in children with stunted growth.

METHODS A total of 237 young adults (young group, 20-39 years), 147 middle-aged adults (middle-aged group, 40-59 years), and 177 older adults (old group, 60-87 years) participated in this study. All participants had natural dentition, excluding the third molars. AGE was measured when the participant chewed gummy jelly and used as a parameter of MP. AGE was compared among the three groups. Next, AGE in each group was compared between the habitual chewing side and non-habitual chewing side, and between males and females. The correlation between age and AGE was also investigated. RESULTS AGE in the young, middle, and old groups were similar, and no significant differences were observed. AGE was significantly higher in the habitual chewing side compared to the non-habitual chewing side, and in males than that in females. No significant correlations were found between age and AGE. AGE in the habitual chewing side of all ages was 221.9 ± 34.4 mg/dL for males and 206.0 ± 28.7 mg/dL for females. The mean-2SD (standard deviation) value representing the reference value of healthy adults was 153.1 mg/dL for males and 148.6 mg/dL for females, which was close to 150 mg/dL. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the reference value of masticatory performance as measured by the amount of glucose extraction after chewing gummy jelly was 150 mg/dL.

Abstract
Background/purpose Patients with jaw deformities may show a reduction in masticatory function as a result of postoperative hypofunction. This study aimed to establish a novel rehabilitation program using a commercially available masticatory training food for patients with jaw deformities after orthognathic surgery. Materials and methods Nine patients with mandibular prognathism (the training group: n = 5, and the non-training group: n = 4) and 6 control participants with normal occlusion were included in this study. For the rehabilitation program with masticatory exercise, patients were instructed to chew the training food once a day for 60 days starting from 10 days after the surgery. The effects of the rehabilitation program were assessed by determining the maximum bite force (MBF) and the masticatory performance (MP). Clinical assessments were performed just before orthognathic surgery (Pre) and at 10 days (T0), 1 month (T1), 2 months (T2), and 3 months (T3) after surgery. Results Compared with the non-training group, the training group showed a trend toward greater recovery amount of MBF from Pre to T3, and a significantly greater recovery amount in MP (p < 0.05) from Pre to T3. When the time-series change of MP was evaluated in both groups from T0 to T3, a significant difference was observed in the interaction terms (p = 0.03). This result indicates that the effectiveness of the training may be demonstrated by following the postoperative course further. Conclusion The rehabilitation using this training food may become a useful method for postoperative hypofunction in patients with jaw deformities.

Abstract
Background The relationship between tongue pressure and masticatory performance during the mixed dentition period in cases of Class II malocclusion has not been clarified. The aim of this study was to determine differences in tongue pressure-related factors, including maxillofacial morphology and masticatory performance, between Class I and Class II malocclusions during the mixed dentition period. Methods A total of 56 children with Class I malocclusion (12 boys, 16 girls) or Class II malocclusion (16 boys, 12 girls) with mixed dentition were included in the present study. Height, body weight, hand grip strength, maximum occlusal force, maximum tongue pressure, masticatory performance, and the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth were measured in all participants. Their lateral cephalograms were also evaluated. The means of all measurements were compared between Class I and Class II malocclusions. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to determine associations between maximum tongue pressure and other variables for each type of malocclusion. Results The maximum tongue pressure, hand grip strength, and maximum occlusal force in the Class II malocclusion group were significantly lower than those in the Class I malocclusion group (all, p < 0.05). The maximum tongue pressure was significantly positively correlated with hand grip strength, maximum occlusal force, masticatory performance, and SNB (sella, nasion, B point) angle in the Class I group (all, p < 0.05), and with height, body weight, and labial inclination of the central incisors in the Class II group (all, p < 0.05). Conclusions The maxillofacial morphometric factors associated with tongue pressure were clearly different between cases of Class I and Class II malocclusion with mixed dentition. Masticatory performance and tongue pressure were significantly positively correlated in cases of Class I malocclusion, but not in cases of Class II malocclusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As oral function requires maintenance throughout life, it needs to be understood across age groups; however, few studies have investigated this in young individuals. OBJECTIVES To clarify age and sex differences in maximum occlusal force, maximum tongue pressure and tongue-lip motor function; and the relationship among these oral functions in junior high school students and young adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study investigated oral functions in students aged 12-13 years, 14-15 years old and 16-17 years old (S1, S2 and S3), and young adults aged 20-40 years (YA). We analysed age group differences in each sex and sex differences in each age group. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed for each sex using the maximum occlusal force as the dependent variable to investigate the associations among different oral functions. RESULTS In 522 children and 100 young adults, there were significant increases in oral functions with age in males and a significant decrease in maximum tongue pressure between S2 and S3 in females. Maximum occlusal force and tongue pressure were higher in males than in females in S3 and YA; tongue-lip motor function was higher in females than in males in S1. In multiple linear regression analysis, tongue-lip motor function and age group were significant factors in both sexes and in males, respectively. CONCLUSION Maximum occlusal force, maximum tongue pressure and tongue-lip motor function increased with increasing age groups in males. Our findings provide a basis for assessing oral function across age groups.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clarify the inter-measurement variation of the masticatory performance test. Forty healthy adults were divided into group A (10 males and 10 females), who did not chew the test food before experiment, and group B (10 males and 10 females) who chewed the test food before the experiment. Subjects were asked to chew a gummy jelly for 20 s on the habitual chewing side, and the amount of glucose extraction was measured. The test was repeated three times with an interval of 1 min in both groups (Group A: A1, A2, A3; Group B: B1, B2, B3). In both groups A and B, the difference between the measured values was compared and the reliability between measurements was investigated. In group A, the value of A1 was small, and a statistically significant difference was observed between A1 and other measured values. In group B, the three measured values were similar and no significant difference was observed among the measured values. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values for determining inter-measurement reliability in group A were 0.758 for A1-A2-A3, 0.708 for A1-A2, and 0.901 for A2-A3. The ICCs in group B were 0.924 for B1-B2-B3, 0.945 for B1-B2, and 0.926 for B2-B3. Based on these results, it can be suggested that high reliability between the measurements can be obtained if the subjects are accustomed to chewing the test food before the experiment, and that the measured values were similar whether it was performed two or three times. Consequently, one measurement was sufficient if subjects were accustomed to chewing the test food before the experiment.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the influence of changes in age-related physiological muscular and dental factors on masticatory function. This study was conducted in 211 healthy participants divided into four different age groups: 20–45 years (Gr1); 45–60 years (Gr2); 61–70 years (Gr3); and ≥71 years (Gr4). For objective evaluation of masticatory function, the masticatory performance, bite force, posterior bite area (PBA), functional tooth units (FTUs), the number of remaining teeth, tongue pressure, masseter muscle thickness (MMT), and handgrip strength were examined. Food intake ability (FIA) and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 score were assessed subjectively using questionnaires. A significant decrease in the number of remaining teeth, FTUs, handgrip strength, and FIA was found in Gr4, and a significant decrease in the tongue pressure, PBA, and bite force was found in those aged ≥61 years. In groups 1 and 3, an association of the PBA with masticatory performance was observed. However, there was no significant decreasing trend in the MMT with respect to masticatory performance with aging. With sufficient FTUs and posterior tooth support, although age-dependent decreases in the bite force, tongue pressure and handgrip strength were observed, masticatory performance was maintained. Establishing the PBA by improving occlusion through dental treatment is thought to be important for masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This randomised controlled trial aimed to compare the masticatory function between the silicone-based resilient denture liner and conventional denture among edentulous patients. METHODS The trial included edentulous patients who were willing to have a new set of complete dentures. Participants were randomly assigned to receive mandibular complete dentures with either a 1) conventional denture base (CD group) or (2) silicone-based resilient denture liner (RD group). Masticatory performance (evaluated with gummy jelly) and the maximum occlusal force were measured at baseline, on final adjustment, and at 3 months after the final adjustment. The outcomes were analyzed using two-way mixed analysis of variance and a paired t-test. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS The masticatory performance was lower in the RD group than in the CD group; it increased significantly over time in the CD group, but not in the RD group. The maximum occlusal force in the RD group was significantly higher than that in the CD group; it increased significantly over time in the RD group, but not in the CD group. CONCLUSIONS Silicone-based RD liners applied to mandibular complete dentures are effective in improving the maximum occlusal force but not the masticatory performance, as measured with gummy jelly. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Prior evidence has suggested that mandibular complete dentures with resilient denture liners improve masticatory function. However, the results of this study indicate that difficulties may remain with the mastication of foods with a certain texture (e.g., gummy jelly).

Abstract
Maintaining oral function in older individuals with missing teeth is important for leading a healthy and independent life. This study aimed to evaluate whether simple isometric exercises can maintain and improve the oral function [maximum occlusal force (MOF) and masticatory ability (MA)] and the masticatory muscle properties [masseter muscle thickness (MMT) and echo intensity (MMEI)] in older adults during the maintenance phase of removable prosthetic treatment. Participants were randomly categorized into the intervention and control groups. The mouthpieces were distributed, and participants were instructed to use them for exercising. The intervention group was instructed to perform maximum clenching for 10 s, whereas the control group was instructed to tap the teeth at an arbitrary speed for 10 s. Both were repeated five times at an interval of 5 s between each activity and twice daily for 4 weeks. The outcomes were measured after a month of exercise. The intervention group showed a significant improvement in the MOF, MMT during contraction, MMT at rest and MMEI during contraction. There were no significant differences in the MA and MMEI at rest. In the control group, no improvement was observed in any of the parameters. When the isometric exercises were performed using a mouthpiece, there was an improvement in the oral function and masseter muscle properties in older individuals with Eichner B status who used dentures.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to clarify whether occlusal force and masticatory performance reduced in elderly adults and whether these parameters were affected by age. METHODS Seventy-eight elderly adults (elderly group) and 76 young adults (control group) with natural dentition were asked to maximally clench for 3 s, and occlusal force was calculated. The amount of glucose extraction after chewing a gummy jelly was measured as the parameter for masticatory performance. Occlusal force and masticatory performance were compared between the elderly and control groups. The correlation between age and occlusal force and between age and masticatory performance was also investigated. RESULTS Occlusal force was significantly smaller in the elderly group (P < 0.05). Masticatory performance was lower in the elderly group, but this difference was not statistically significant. No significant correlation was observed between age and occlusal force in the control group, but a negative correlation was found in the elderly group (P < 0.05). No significant correlation was found between age and masticatory performance in either group. CONCLUSION Occlusal force was affected by age and reduced significantly, whereas masticatory performance was not affected by age and was maintained in elderly adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether orthodontically treated patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) possess a different masticatory function than those of untreated patients with normal occlusion. DESIGN Occlusal contact area, occlusal force, as well as masseter and anterior temporal muscular activity were measured during maximum voluntary clenching (MVC) tests. Mandibular left and right lateral movements during mastication were also assessed. To further elucidate the nature of masticatory function, especially to determine the rate of abnormal jaw movement patterns, a parametric error index (EI) was set. Finally, masticatory efficiency was evaluated with a glucose sensitive measuring device. PARTICIPANTS Fifteen patients with CLP who had previously completed the orthodontic treatments required to achieve an acceptable and more harmonious occlusion accepted to volunteer in this study along with 21 untreated patients who already possessed a normal occlusion. RESULTS Patients with CLP showed a significantly lower occlusal force, reduced occlusal contact area, and decreased masticatory efficiency as well as significantly higher EI value when compared with controls. However, there was no significant difference when analyzing muscle activity, although masticatory efficiency was significantly different between the 2 groups. Despite this result, the scores obtained by the patients with CLP in the masticatory efficiency tests were still in the normal range. CONCLUSIONS Orthodontic treatment for adult patients with CLP provides a satisfactory result for the patients' masticatory ability albeit significantly less ideal compared with untreated patients with normal occlusion.

Abstract
The position of the dentition is considered to be determined by a combination of forces exerted by the perioral muscles and tongue. We hypothesized that mandibular anterior crowding may be related to abnormalities in the development of oral function. To determine the relationship between oral function and mandibular anterior crowding in early mixed dentition. A total of 61 children (30 boys, 31 girls) with early mixed dentition were included in this study. Height, body weight, maximum occlusal force, lip‐closing strength, and maximum tongue pressure were measured in all participants, and their dental casts and lateral cephalograms were evaluated. Little's irregularity index (LII), evaluated by dental casts, was used as an indicator of mandibular anterior crowding. Maximum occlusal force and lip‐closing strength were not significantly correlated with the LII, although they were positively correlated with maximum tongue pressure, mandibular intercanine perimeter distance, and upper central incisor (U1)‐to‐NL angle (p < .05). Maximum tongue pressure was negatively correlated with LII (p < .05). Maximum tongue pressure and LII were significantly positively correlated with the mandibular intercanine perimeter distance and U1/NL angle, and negatively correlated with the interincisal angle (p < .05 for all). Crowding of the mandibular anterior teeth was directly correlated with tongue pressure function and indirectly correlated with maximum occlusal force and lip‐closing strength.

Abstract
Background There is growing international interest in the prevention of decreased oral function for managing oral health in older people. Objective The aims of the present study were to identify factors related to decreases in masticatory performance and masticatory function until swallowing in subjects aged 20‐79 years old. Methods A total of 152 subjects, ranging in age from 20 to 79 years, were divided into six groups according to their chronological age: 20‐29, 30‐39, 40‐49, 50‐59, 60‐69 and 70‐79 years. Grip strength, maximum occlusal force, maximum tongue pressure, masticatory performance and swallowing threshold were measured in all subjects. Masticatory performance and swallowing threshold were determined according to the concentration of dissolved glucose obtained from gummy jellies; decreased masticatory performance and decreased swallowing threshold were defined as glucose concentrations in the lowest 20th percentile. A multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with decreased masticatory performance and decreased swallowing threshold. A self‐administered lifestyle questionnaire was also completed. Results Logistic regression analyses revealed that factors related to decreased masticatory performance included use of more than one kind of medicine for treating chronic diseases and removable denture use, while factors related to decreased swallowing threshold included eating between meals once or more per day, poorer mental health and decreased saliva flow. Conclusions Different factors are related to decreased masticatory performance and decreased swallowing threshold, although both of these phenomena are closely associated with general health status.
