Abstract
A novel tedizolid phosphate (TZP) nanoparticle (NP)-loaded buccal film formulation was developed for the treatment of buccal wounds infected with S. aureus. TZP-loaded chitosan NPs were produced and characterized to prepare this composite system. The optimum NP formulation was then loaded into mucoadhesive buccal films. The antibacterial effects of the obtained buccal films were evaluated by in vitro and in vivo studies. The optimum TZP-NP formulation (F8) had a particle size of 177.40 ± 2.97 nm and PDI and ZP values were 0.437 ± 0.002 and 33.9 ± 0.5, respectively. In antibacterial efficacy tests, the optimum NP containing buccal film formulation was used, which released approximately 90 % of TZP within 5 h. TZP-NP-loaded buccal films achieved a 3 log10 reduction in S. aureus within just 3 h. It was also administered to Wistar albino rats with S. aureus-infected buccal wounds. As a result of in vivo studies, a significant decrease in the number of S. aureus was detected in wound samples treated with TZP-NP-loaded buccal films. In addition, a complete inhibition of growth was observed on the fifth day of the film application. The current work suggested that the TZP-NP-loaded composite films could be promising candidates for effective and long-acting antibacterial treatment of buccal wounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of ozone therapy in oral ulcers healing when compared to placebo or active treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS The search was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Lilacs databases. Clinical trials involving human participants were included. The Risk Ratio (RR) and the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95%CI (confidence interval) were calculated. The ROBINS-I (risk of bias in non-randomized studies of interventions) and RoB2 (risk of bias tool for randomized trials) assessment tool was used to detect bias. RESULTS After the selection process, 12 studies were included. The meta-analysis showed that ozone therapy helps to reduce the size of the traumatic and autoimmune ulcers (RR=-0.44; 95% CI -0.71,-0.17; I2=0%) in comparison to placebo. Regarding pain reduction, ozone was superior to placebo (RR = 1.29, 95% CI -1.6 to -0.95); I2=0%), and equivalent to topical corticosteroid and laser photobiomodulation (RR = 0.26, 95% CI -0.27,0.78, p = 0.34). CONCLUSION Ozone therapy is an alternative for accelerating healing and reducing pain for both traumatic and autoimmune ulcers. However, the quality of evidence is limited. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Oral ulcerations are usually painful and impact quality of life requiring different approaches to boost wound healing and reduce symptoms. For this purpose, ozone therapy is a promising strategy.

Abstract
Musculoskeletal disorders encompass a wide range of conditions that impact the bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues within the body. Despite the ongoing debate on toxicity and administration, ozone demonstrated promise in managing several musculoskeletal disorders, modulating pain and inflammation. A literature search was conducted. The research design, methods, findings, and conclusions of the studies were then examined to evaluate the physiological effects, clinical application, controversies, and safety of the application of ozone in musculoskeletal medicine. Ozone application demonstrates considerable therapeutic applications in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, including fractures, osteoarthritis, and chronic pain syndromes. Despite these advantages, studies have raised concerns regarding its potential toxicity and emphasized the importance of adhering to stringent administration protocols to ensure safety. Additionally, heterogeneities in patient reactions and hazards from oxidizing agents were observed. Given its anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities, ozone therapy holds potential in the management of several musculoskeletal disorders. Additional high-quality research with long follow-up is required to refine indications, efficacy and safety profile. Finally, for wider clinical acceptability and utilization, the development of international recommendations is essential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the effects of intramuscular ozone therapy on nociception, inflammation, and tissue damage caused by the injection of carrageenan in the masseter muscle of rats. DESIGN Rat masseter muscles were injected with saline or carrageenan. Seventy-seven adult male rats were divided into six groups: Sal, saline; Car, carrageenan; Ibup + Sal, ibuprofen and saline; Ibup + Car, ibuprofen and carrageenan; O3 + Sal, ozone and saline; and O3 + Car, ozone and carrageenan. The mixture of 5% ozone and 95% oxygen (20 µg/mL) was administered three times in the course of a week. Nociceptive responses in the masseter muscles were measured using a head withdrawal threshold, determined by an electronic von Frey anesthesiometer. The animals were euthanized one or eight days after the carrageenan injection, and the masseters were submitted to histological and histomorphometric analyses. RESULTS Mechanical allodynia and inflammation levels were reduced in the Ibup + Car group compared to the other groups. Myonecrosis was similar among carrageenan-treated groups. Picrosirius red stained sections showed more collagen fibers and more regenerating myofibers in the O3 + Car group compared to the other groups. Eight days after carrageenan injection, the O3 + Car group showed neutrophils close to the regenerating myofibers. CONCLUSIONS Intramuscular ozone therapy did not alleviate mechanical allodynia, and it did not protect the masseter muscle against the deleterious effects produced by carrageenan, probably due to the mode of administration of this therapeutic agent.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is gaining more and more attention in regenerative medicine as an innovative and efficient therapeutic approach. The regenerative properties of PRP rely on the numerous bioactive molecules released by the platelets: growth factors are involved in proliferation and differentiation of endothelial cells and fibroblasts, angiogenesis and extracellular matrix formation, while cytokines are mainly involved in immune cell recruitment and inflammation modulation. Attempts are ongoing to improve the therapeutic potential of PRP by combining it with agents able to promote regenerative processes. Two interesting candidates are ozone, administered at low doses as gaseous oxygen-ozone mixtures, and procaine. In the present study, we investigated the effects induced on platelets by the in vitro treatment of PRP with ozone or procaine, or both. We combined transmission electron microscopy to obtain information on platelet modifications and bioanalytical assays to quantify the secreted factors. The results demonstrate that, although platelets were already activated by the procedure to prepare PRP, both ozone and procaine induced differential morpho-functional modifications in platelets resulting in an increased release of factors. In detail, ozone induced an increase in surface protrusions and open canalicular system dilation suggestive of a marked α-granule release, while procaine caused a decrease in surface protrusions and open canalicular system dilation but a remarkable increase in microvesicle release suggestive of high secretory activity. Consistently, nine of the thirteen platelet-derived factors analysed in the PRP serum significantly increased after treatment with ozone and/or procaine. Therefore, ozone and procaine proved to have a remarkable stimulating potential without causing any damage to platelets, probably because they act through physiological, although different, secretory pathways.

Abstract
Support and management of second-intention wound healing involves frequent dressing changes having different properties. Dressings can range from simple ones, such as nonadherent dressings, to more complex options, such as foam, hydrocolloid, alginate or negative pressure dressings. Seven cats were enrolled in the study with a total of nine wounds of various sizes with different etiology sizes and localizations. Three methods of local ozone administration were used to cover more of the ozone properties in the treatment of wounds: bagging, perilesional subcutaneous infiltrations and lavages with ozonated saline. Evaluation of the healing process was performed by clinical observation and wound area measurements every seven days until the complete recovery of the patients. The results of this study should encourage clinicians to consider medical ozone as a new therapeutic approach with regenerative properties in the second-intention healing of cats presenting cutaneous wounds.

Abstract
Background Autoimmunity may play a major role in the pathogenesis of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). The therapeutic potential of ozone therapy has recently been shown in rheumatological diseases, and this study aimed to assess the clinical efficacy of ozone therapy (OT) in refractory IGM. Methods Patients with biopsy-verified IGM and incomplete response after steroid therapy (n = 47) between 2018 and 2021 were enrolled. Of these, 23 cases in cohort A had standard treatment with further steroid therapy (ST), and 24 were treated with systemic OT via autohemotherapy (AHT) in addition to steroid therapy (cohort B). Results The median age was 33 years (range, 24-45). Patients in cohort B had a higher complete response rate after completion of a four-month ozone therapy than those in the ST-group (OT-group, 37.5% vs. ST-group, 0%; p = 0.002). At a median follow-up of 12 months (range, 12-35), the patients treated with OT had a lower one-year recurrence in the affected breast than cases in cohort A treated with ST (OT-group, 21% vs. ST-group, 70%; p = 0.001). No significant side effects were observed in patients in cohort B related to AHT. Furthermore, OT significantly decreased the total steroid treatment duration (median week of steroid use; 26 weeks in cohort A vs. 12 weeks in cohort B; p = 0.001). Conclusion Systemic OT increases the complete response rate and decreases the duration of steroid treatment in patients with refractory IGM. Therefore, ozone therapy is an effective, well-tolerated, and safe novel complementary therapeutic modality.

Abstract
Background and aim: We aimed to investigate the effect of ozonated autohaemotherapy (OA) on the wound healing, serum values of interleukin (IL) - 6, 8, 10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and local expression of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR) in type 2 diabetics with the acute soft-tissue infections. Methods: Patients in the first cohort (n-30) received a basic comprehensive treatment (BCT-group), and the second (n=28) also received OA (OA-group). Blood samples for ELISA and tissue specimens for the immunohistochemical examinations were collected at admission (day 0) and at the 9th day of inpatient treatment. Results: The additional using of OA has accelerated the timing of a single and the complete wound granulation and the timing to marginal epithelization, compared with the results of the standard treatment. The use of OA has significantly reduced the production of IL-8, 10 at 9th day. OA-group patients were characterized by consistently high levels of bFGF production in contrast to the BCT-group, where the decreasing in the serum bFGF level was observed. The maximum number of bFGFR - immunopositive labels was observed in OA-group out to 9th day (319,45 (249,90-348,43) versus baseline 192,65 (171,93-207,72), versus BCT-group 123,30 (105,23- 141,10), p<0,001). Conclusions: Application of OA in the complex treatment of the acute soft-tissue infections in diabetics makes it possible to achieve the significant reductions in the duration of the wound inflammation and regeneration phases by eliminating of overproduction of IL- 8, 10 and induction of expression of bFGF and its receptors. Abstract
Simple Summary The search for new topical antimicrobial treatments represents an actual challenge both in orthopedics and in dentistry. As regards the latter, antiseptics represent an aid to the non-surgical treatment commonly employed to contrast periodontitis. This study aims to assess the efficacy of an ozone-based gel with respect to the more common chlorhexidine gels. Ten participants were treated by means of nonsurgical periodontal therapy, with, in addition, a chlorhexidine gel and an ozone one, both, respectively, used in half of the oral sites. Patients were visited at baseline, after one month, and after three months, and at each time point clinical indexes were assessed. This study revealed that the use of the ozonized gel in addition to the standard non-surgical therapy generally did not significantly differ if compared to the use of chlorhexidine. Based on this, ozone deserves consideration for its wide applicability in several clinical fields, especially considering the reduced number of shortcomings with respect to those generally related to chlorhexidine. Abstract The search for new topical treatments able to display not only antimicrobial properties but also a multiplicity of other beneficial effects while expressing safe cytocompatibility toward host tissues is being progressively developed. Antiseptics represent an aid to the gold standard nonsurgical treatment Scaling-and-Root-Planing (SRP) for periodontal disease. This split-mouth study aims to assess the efficacy of the ozonized gel GeliO3 (Bioemmei Srl, Vicenza, Italy) plus SRP (experimental treatment), with respect to SRP + chlorhexidine gel. Ten participants were treated with SRP + chlorhexidine gel (control sites) and with SRP + ozone gel (trial sites). After 1 (T1) and 3 months (T2) from baseline (T0), patients were revisited. At each time-point, the following indexes were assessed: probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and bleeding on probing (BoP). It has been assessed that the use of the ozonized gel in addition to SRP did not show significant differences if compared to conventional SRP + chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine was found to be more effective than ozone in reducing CAL and GI at T2. Ozone deserves consideration for its wide applicability in several clinical fields. In this connection, we also glance at the latest research on ozone therapy.

Abstract
Simple Summary Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is often found in skin lesions infected in particular in diabetic foot ulcers, in which the prevalence can reach 40%. Clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is generally resistant to most classes of antibiotics and therefore it is necessary to develop new antimicrobial agents. Ozone has a recognized bactericidal activity and has been widely used as a clinical therapeutic agent for chronic wounds, such as ulcers and other injuries, due to its ability to heal wounds. This is a preliminary study that reports the effectiveness of ozonated oils on the eradication of skin infection in vivo. The study provides further insights into the antibacterial effect of ozone in infected skin ulcers in diabetic rats and also, the potential wound healing effect of ozonated oils. Furthermore, this is the first study investigating the efficacy of ozone in the eradication of diabetic foot ulcers infected by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Our results indicate that topical application of ozonated oils infected skin in rats have significant antimicrobial activity as well as wound healing capacity. Achieving the healing of infected diabetic foot wounds has become a challenge and ozonated oils may be used to treat these infections. Abstract Diabetic foot ulcers are a common cause of morbidity in diabetic patients. One of the main pathogens found in these ulcers is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA often carries resistance to several classes of antibiotics and their infections are becoming harder to treat. Therefore, new alternatives are urgently needed. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the capacity of topical ozonated oil application on the treatment of early-stage skin infected with MRSA in an animal model. Ozonated oil was prepared from a mixture of oils subjected to a gas stream of O2/O3 mixture. Sixteen Wistar rats were inoculated by an intradermic injection of MRSA suspension, producing an abscess lesion. After 3 days, the skin epidermis was removed to open the wound. Group 1 received an application of oil mixture without ozone treatment and Group 2 received an application of ozonated oil. After the treatment period, skin was collected, colony-forming units (CFU) of bacteria were quantified and the histological analysis of the skin was carried out. Skin samples from the control 1 and 2 had a bacterial load was of 1.1 × 105 and 5.7 × 103 CFU/mL, respectively. Group 2 showed better wound healing from mild to moderate epidermal regeneration. Topical application of ozonated vegetable oil in MRSA-infected skin in rats showed a small reduction of the bacterial load and better wound healing.
