Abstract
The application of antifibrotic materials can alleviate epidural fibrosis by restricting excessive fibroblast proliferation and mitigating scar tissue formation. Here, a biodegradable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP)-resveratrol (RES) sponge was fabricated to inhibit scar tissue formation post laminectomy surgery. Fibroblasts NIH/3T3, myoblasts C2C12, neural cells PC-12, and Schwann cells RSC96 were used to evaluate the in vitro cytocompatibility. Laminectomies on 10 Sprague–Dawley rats with/without the application of the CMC-BSP-RES sponge were performed. The severity of adhesion between the dura mater and formed scar tissue was qualitatively scored. All cell lines exhibited good viability with no significant difference in cytotoxicity when cultured with variable extractions of the CMC-BSP-RES sponge. S100a4 and P4hb expressions were downregulated in NIH/3T3 cultured in the CMC-BSP-RES sponge, implying that this sponge potentially inhibits fibroblast activity. No post-operative shrinkage or dura mater expansion along the surgical site was detected. The peel-off tests revealed that the tenacity of adhesion de-creased. Histopathological examinations verified that the average number of fibroblasts in the CMC-BSP-RES group considerably decreased. The CMC-BSP-RES sponge is a biocompatible and effective material for alleviating post-operative epidural fibrosis and mitigating fibroblast expression following laminectomy.

Abstract
Epidural fibrosis (EF) is a common complication for the patients who underwent laminectomy. Recently, EF is thought to cause recurrent postoperative pain after laminectomy. Resveratrol has been shown to exert its anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and antiproliferative multifaceted properties. The object of this study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol on the prevention of postlaminectomy EF formation in laminectomy rats. A controlled double-blinded study was performed on 60 healthy adult Sprague-Dawley rats that underwent lumbar laminectomy at the L1-L2 levels. They were divided randomly into 3 groups (1, 2, and 3) of 20 rats each—group 1: resveratrol treatment group; group 2: resveratrol dilution saline treatment group; group 3: sham group (rats underwent laminectomy without treatment). All rats were killed 4 weeks after operation. The Rydell score, hydroxyproline content, vimentin cells density, fibroblasts density, and inflammatory factors expressional levels all suggested better results in resveratrol group than the other two groups. Resveratrol is able to inhibit fibroblasts proliferation, and TGF-β1 and IL-6 expressions and prevent epidural fibrosis in postlaminectomy rat.

Abstract
Experimental NO deficiency induced by L-NAME injection led to the development of arterial hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and reduced blood content of nitrates and nitrites. Impaza, NO donors, activators of NO-synthase, antioxidants, and antihypertensive preparations produced endothelium-protective effect of different degree.

Abstract
Saphenous vein graft thrombosis after coronary artery bypass graft surgery is a poorly understood problem that lessens the benefits of this procedure. Recent studies highlight the importance of injury sustained at the time of saphenous vein graft procurement in the pathogenesis of acute graft thrombosis. In particular, damage to the graft endothelium that occurs secondary to ex vivo pressure distention, a common practice during vein harvest, leads to a loss of antithrombotic factors and increased activity of subendothelial prothrombotic factors. The prothrombotic potential of damaged grafts is further exacerbated by an ischemic storage interval and subsequent exposure to arterial flow conditions after grafting. A clearer understanding of the mechanisms by which endothelial disruption leads to acute saphenous vein graft thrombosis may result in interventions for improving our procurement techniques, interrupting the downstream effects of the damaged saphenous vein graft and/or discriminating damage that is beyond an acceptable threshold of thrombotic risk.

Abstract
The resveratrol-induced cardiac protection was studied in Zucker obese rats. Rats were divided into five groups: group 1, lean control; group 2, obese control (OC); group 3, obese rats treated orally with 5 mg kg(-1) day(-1) of resveratrol (OR) for 2 wk; group 4, obese rats received 10% glucose solution ad libitum for 3 wk (OG); and group 5, obese rats received 10% glucose for 3 wk and resveratrol (OGR) during the 2nd and 3rd wk. Body weight, serum glucose, and insulin were measured, and then hearts were isolated and subjected to 30 min of ischemia followed by 120 min of reperfusion. Heart rate, coronary flow, aortic flow, developed pressure, the incidence of reperfusion-induced ventricular fibrillation, and infarct size were measured. Resveratrol reduced body weight and serum glucose in the OR compared with the OC values (414 +/- 10 g and 7.08 +/- 0.41 mmol/l, respectively, to 378 +/- 12 g and 6.11 +/- 0.44 mmol/l), but insulin levels were unchanged. The same results were obtained for the OG vs. OGR group. Resveratrol improved postischemic cardiac function in the presence or absence of glucose intake compared with the resveratrol-free group. The incidence of ventricular fibrillation and infarct size was reduced by 83 and 20% in the OR group, and 67 and 16% in the OGR group, compared with the OC and OG groups, respectively. Resveratrol increased GLUT-4 expression and reduced endothelin expression and cardiac apoptosis in ischemic-reperfused hearts in the presence or absence of glucose intake. Thus the protective effect of resveratrol could be related to its direct effects on the heart.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our aim was to investigate the anti-adhesion potential of resveratrol, a phytoestrogen naturally found in wine, in a rat uterine horn model. METHODS Lesions were created by laparotomy in the uterine horn of 70 rats, randomized before the operation into seven groups consisting of ten animals each: (1) control group, no adjuvant therapy; (2) intraperitoneal (IP) application of the resveratrol dilution vehicle, 10 mg/kg, before closing the laparotomy; (3) subcutaneous (SC) injection of dilution vehicle, 10 mg/kg, 30 min before the operation; (4) IP application of resveratrol, 10 mg/kg, before closing the laparotomy; (5) SC injection of resveratrol, 10 mg/kg, 30 min before the operation; (6) IP application of resveratrol, 10 mg/kg, before closing the laparotomy and continued SC daily for 5 days; and (7) SC injection of resveratrol, 10 mg/kg, 30 min before the operation and continued SC daily for 5 days. On the 14th postoperative day adhesion scores were determined. Levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were also measured. RESULTS In animals treated with repeated SC resveratrol, adhesions were graded as significantly less severe than in the vehicle control group or the groups treated with resveratrol IP or IP plus SC. TAC of control group rats was significantly lower than that of animals treated with repeated SC resveratrol. CONCLUSION Repeated SC resveratrol significantly reduces adhesion formation.

Abstract
Elevated circulating concentrations of oxidized LDL (OxLDL) and cell adhesion molecules are considered to be relevant markers of oxidative stress and endothelial activation which are implicated in the development of CVD. On the other hand, it has been suggested that dietary flavonoid consumption may be cardioprotective through possible favourable impacts on LDL particle oxidation and endothelial activation. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of the daily consumption of low-calorie cranberry juice cocktail on plasma OxLDL, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and E-selectin concentrations in men. Thirty men (mean age 51 (sd 10) years) were recruited and asked to consume increasing daily doses of cranberry juice cocktail (125, 250 and 500 ml/d) over three successive periods of 4 weeks. Plasma OxLDL and adhesion molecule concentrations were measured by ELISA before and after each phase. We noted a significant decrease in plasma OxLDL concentrations following the intervention (P < 0.0001). We also found that plasma ICAM-1 (P < 0.0001) and VCAM-1 (P < 0.05) concentrations decreased significantly during the course of the study. In summary, the present results show that daily cranberry juice cocktail consumption is associated with decreases in plasma OxLDL, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 concentrations in men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe neurologic injury still represents one of the most devastating complications after surgical repair of thoracoabdominal aneurysms. We therefore aimed to investigate the protective effect of resveratrol, a natural polyphenol antioxidant present in grapes and wine, in an experimental model of spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS Sixteen rabbits were assigned either to group A (n = 8; receiving resveratrol, treated group) or group B (n = 8; control group, nontreated group) and underwent a 30-minutes period of spinal cord ischemia by clamping the abdominal aorta between the left renal artery and the aortic bifurcation. Fifteen minutes before clamping, rabbits received either intravenous resveratrol (100 microg/kg; group A) or normal saline (group B). Functional assessment with Tarlov score at 8, 16, and 24 hours postoperatively, histopathologic assessment of the spinal cord, measurements of malondialdehyde levels, and myeloperoxidase activity in the spinal cord were performed. RESULTS Neurologic impairment (Tavlov score for group A = 4.38 +/- 1.19 and for group B = 0.38 +/- 0.74, p < 0.001), malondialdehyde levels (47.71 +/- 7.81 nmol/g versus 86.56 +/- 11.39 nmol/g, p < 0.001), and myeloperoxidase activity (2.13 +/- 0.72 nm/min versus 3.75 +/- 0.78 nm/min, p = 0.002) were significantly lower in the resveratrol-treated animals. Additionally, pathologically assessed outcomes were better in the resveratrol-treated group. The total number of motor neurons in the gray matter was significantly lower in the nontreated group than in the resveratrol-treated group (14.26 +/- 2.94 versus 29.12 +/- 3.64, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Prophylactic use of resveratrol reduced neurologic injury and provided clinical improvement by attenuating the inflammatory milieu in the rabbit spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion model.
