3D multi-robot olfaction in naturally ventilated indoor environments: Locating a time-varying source at unknown heights

Source localization is significant for mitigating indoor air pollution and safeguarding the well-being and safety of occupants. While most study focuses on mechanical ventilation and static sources, this study explores the less-explored domain of locating time-varying sources in naturally ventilated spaces. We have developed an innovative 3D localization system that adjusts to varying heights, significantly enhancing capabilities beyond traditional fixed-height 2D systems. To ensure consistency in experimental conditions, we conducted comparative analyses of 2D and 3D methods, using a swinging fan to simulate natural ventilation. Our findings reveal a substantial disparity in performance: the 2D method had a success rate below 46.7% in cases of height mismatches, while our 3D methods consistently achieved success rates above 66.7%, demonstrating their superior effectiveness in complex environments. Furthermore, we validated the 3D strategies in real naturally ventilated settings, confirming their wider applicability. This research extends the scope of indoor source localization and offers valuable insights and strategies for more effective pollution control.

Identifying spatiotemporal information of the point pollutant source indoors based on the adjoint-regularization method

Fast and accurate identification of the pollutant source location and release rate is important for improving indoor air quality. From the perspective of public health, identification of the airborne pathogen source in public buildings is particularly important for ensuring people's safety and health. The existing adjoint probability method has difficulty in distinguishing the temporal source, and the optimization algorithm can only analyze a few potential sources in space. This study proposed an algorithm combining the adjoint-pulse and regularization methods to identify the spatiotemporal information of the point pollutant source in an entire room space. We first obtained a series of source-receptor response matrices using the adjoint-pulse method in the room based on the validated CFD model, and then used the regularization method and composite Bayesian inference to identify the release rate and location of the dynamic pollutant source. The results showed that the MAPEs (mean absolute percentage errors) of estimated source intensities were almost less than 15%, and the source localization success rates were above 25/30 in this study. This method has the potential to be used to identify the airborne pathogen source in public buildings combined with sensors for disease-specific biomarkers.

Do anthropogenic and natural factors elevate the haze pollution in the South Asian countries? Evidence from long-term cointegration and VECM causality estimation

Anthropogenic and natural factors lead to substantial environmental degradation. This shift is aligned with the country's overall development, resulting in high demand for energy resources and a dramatic shift in human activities that contribute to haze pollution. Some of the countries in the South Asian region are ranked between one and twenty on the list of countries with the highest levels of PM2.5 pollution. The member countries have taken many steps to tackle global warming, but concern about haze pollution was found limited. Moreover, very little research was conducted on haze pollution, which led us to conduct this research in this region. This study used the panel data from 1998 to 2018 and a set of econometric models like long-term cointegrating relationship, fully modified ordinary least squares, and vector error-correction model Granger causality tests to examine the major drivers like anthropogenic and natural factors that might elevate haze pollution. Furthermore, our empirical results depict that (1) there is a long-term cointegrating relation between haze and the factors studied. (2) Energy consumption, urbanisation, and economic growth are the primary drivers of environmental degradation. (3) Rainfall has the most substantial influence on reducing haze pollution. The study concluded that (a) if the countries continue to develop at the same pace, all factors studied will continue to drive haze pollution to rise. (b) A decrease in PM2.5 pollution requires improvements in regional rainfall through vegetation, reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based energy sources, and increasing environmental education. (c) Slowing down the drive for urbanisation would not be cost-effective in reducing haze pollution in the region in the short run. Thus, reducing haze by adjusting the factors studied would not be easy in the short run and require the careful adoption of long-term policies.

Estimation of pollutant sources in multi-zone buildings through different deconvolution algorithms

Effective identification of pollution sources is particularly important for indoor air quality. Accurate estimation of source strength is the basis for source effective identification. This paper proposes an optimization method for the deconvolution process in the source strength inverse calculation. In the scheme, the concept of time resolution was defined, and combined with different filtering positions and filtering algorithms. The measures to reduce effects of measurement noise were quantitatively analyzed. Additionally, the performances of nine deconvolution inverse algorithms under experimental and simulated conditions were evaluated and scored. The hybrid algorithms were proposed and compared with single algorithms including Tikhonov regularization and iterative methods. Results showed that for the filtering position and algorithm, Butterworth filtering performed better, and different filtering positions had little effect on the inverse calculation. For the calculation time step, the optimal Tr (time resolution) was 0.667% and 1.33% in the simulation and experiment, respectively. The hybrid algorithms were found to not perform better than the single algorithms, and the SART (simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique) algorithm from CAT (computer assisted tomography) yielded better performances in the accuracy and stability of source strength identification. The relative errors of the inverse calculation for source strength were typically below 25% using the optimization scheme.
