Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the breadth of social, demographic, and economic (SDE) factors reported in critical illness survivorship research, with a focus on how they impact survivorship outcomes. DATA SOURCES We obtained articles from Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, and CINAHL, as well as reference list reviews of included articles and relevant reviews captured by searches. STUDY SELECTION SDE factors were defined as any nonmedical factor that can influence outcomes. We included primary studies published in English that explored SDE factors as an independent variable or as an outcome in post-ICU survivorship of adults. Two authors independently assessed each study for inclusion in duplicate, and conflicts were resolved by consensus. Our searches returned 7151 records, of which 83 were included for data extraction and final review. DATA EXTRACTION We used a standardized data collection form to extract data, focusing on the characteristics of each study (i.e., year and country of publication), SDE factors explored, how the factors were measured, the impacts of SDE factors on post-ICU survivorship outcomes, and the impacts of ICU admission on SDE outcomes. DATA SYNTHESIS We summarized the relationships between SDE factors and ICU survivorship in table format and performed a narrative synthesis. We identified 16 unique SDE factors explored in the current literature. We found that generally, higher education, income, and socioeconomic status were associated with better outcomes post-ICU; while non-White race, public insurance status, and social vulnerability were associated with poorer outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Various SDE factors have been explored in the critical illness survivorship literature and many are associated with post-ICU outcomes with varying effect sizes. There remains a gap in understanding longitudinal outcomes, mechanisms of how SDE factors interact with outcomes, and of the complexity and interconnectedness of these factors, all of which will be instrumental in guiding interventions to improve post-ICU survivorship.

Abstract
This review explores the financial consequences that survivors of critical illness often face following hospitalization in an intensive care unit (ICU). As part of the "post-intensive care syndrome" (PICS), these survivors often experience, in addition to physical and emotional challenges of PICS, major financial burdens resulting from their prolonged ICU treatments. The escalating costs of ICU care, coupled with the potential long-term effects on survivors' ability to work and maintain financial stability, have brought financial toxicity to the forefront of health care discussions. The current review examines the causes and consequences of financial toxicity.

Abstract
Following intensive care unit hospitalization, survivors of acute neurological injury often experience debilitating short-term and long-term impairments. Although the physical/motor impairments experienced by survivors of acute neurological injury have been described extensively, fewer studies have examined cognitive, mental health, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and employment outcomes. This scoping review describes the publication landscape beyond physical and/or motor sequelae in neurocritical care survivors. Databases were searched for terms related to critical illness, intensive care, and outcomes from January 1970 to March 2022. English-language studies of critically ill adults with a primary neurological diagnosis were included if they reported on at least one outcome of interest: cognition, mental health, HRQoL or employment. Data extraction was performed in duplicate for prespecified variables related to study outcomes. Of 16,036 abstracts screened, 74 citations were identified for inclusion. The studies encompassed seven worldwide regions and eight neurocritical diagnosis categories. Publications reporting outcomes of interest increased from 3 before the year 2000 to 71 after. Follow-up time points included ≤ 1 (n = 15 [20%] citations), 3 (n = 28 [38%]), 6 (n = 28 [38%]), and 12 (n = 21 [28%]) months and 1 to 5 (n = 19 [26%]) and > 5 years (n = 8 [11%]), with 28 (38%) citations evaluating outcomes at multiple time points. Sixty-six assessment tools were used to evaluate the four outcomes of interest: 22 evaluating HRQoL (56 [76%] citations), 21 evaluating cognition (20 [27%] citations), 21 evaluating mental health (18 [24%] citations), and 2 evaluating employment (9 [12%] citations). This scoping review aimed to better understand the literature landscape regarding nonphysical outcomes in survivors of neurocritical care. Although a rising number of publications highlight growing awareness, future efforts are needed to improve study consistency and comparability and characterize outcomes in a disease-specific manner, including outlining of a minimum core outcomes set and associated assessment tools.

Abstract
Patients discharged from intensive care are at risk for post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), which consists of physical, psychological, and/or neurological impairments. This study aimed to analyze PICS at 24 months follow-up, to identify potential risk factors for PICS, and to assess health-related quality of life in a long-term cohort of adult cardiac arrest survivors. This prospective cohort study included adult cardiac arrest survivors admitted to the intensive care unit of a Swiss tertiary academic medical center. The primary endpoint was the prevalence of PICS at 24 months follow-up, defined as impairments in physical (measured through the European Quality of Life 5-Dimensions-3-Levels instrument [EQ-5D-3L]), neurological (defined as Cerebral Performance Category Score > 2 or Modified Rankin Score > 3), and psychological (based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised) domains. Among 107 cardiac arrest survivors that completed the 2-year follow-up, 46 patients (43.0%) had symptoms of PICS, with 41 patients (38.7%) experiencing symptoms in the physical domain, 16 patients (15.4%) in the psychological domain, and 3 patients (2.8%) in the neurological domain. Key predictors for PICS in multivariate analyses were female sex (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 3.17, 95% CI 1.08 to 9.3), duration of no-flow interval during cardiac arrest (minutes) (aOR 1.17, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.33), post-discharge job-loss (aOR 31.25, 95% CI 3.63 to 268.83), need for ongoing psychological support (aOR 3.64, 95% CI 1.29 to 10.29) or psychopharmacologic treatment (aOR 9.49, 95% CI 1.9 to 47.3), and EQ-visual analogue scale (points) (aOR 0.88, 95% CI 0.84 to 0.93). More than one-third of cardiac arrest survivors experience symptoms of PICS 2 years after resuscitation, with the highest impairment observed in the physical and psychological domains. However, long-term survivors of cardiac arrest report intact health-related quality of life when compared to the general population. Future research should focus on appropriate prevention, screening, and treatment strategies for PICS in cardiac arrest patients.

Abstract
An increasing number of patients are surviving critical illness, but some experience new or worsening long-lasting impairments in physical, cognitive and/or mental health, commonly known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). The need to better understand and improve PICS has resulted in a growing body of literature exploring its various facets. This narrative review will focus on recent studies evaluating various aspects of PICS, including co-occurrence of specific impairments, subtypes/phenotypes, risk factors/mechanisms, and interventions. In addition, we highlight new aspects of PICS, including long-term fatigue, pain, and unemployment.
