Regularities in vertical saccadic metrics: new insights, and future perspectives

Introduction

Asymmetries in processing by the healthy brain demonstrate regularities that facilitate the modeling of brain operations. The goal of the present study was to determine asymmetries in saccadic metrics during visual exploration, devoid of confounding clutter in the visual field.

Methods

Twenty healthy adults searched for a small, low-contrast gaze-contingent target on a blank computer screen. The target was visible, only if eye fixation was within a 5 deg. by 5 deg. area of the target's location.

Results

Replicating previously-reported asymmetries, repeated measures contrast analyses indicated that up-directed saccades were executed earlier, were smaller in amplitude, and had greater probability than down-directed saccades. Given that saccade velocities are confounded by saccade amplitudes, it was also useful to investigate saccade kinematics of visual exploration, as a function of vertical saccade direction. Saccade kinematics were modeled for each participant, as a square root relationship between average saccade velocity (i.e., average velocity between launching and landing of a saccade) and corresponding saccade amplitude (Velocity = S*[Saccade Amplitude]^0.5). A comparison of the vertical scaling parameter (S) for up- and down-directed saccades showed that up-directed saccades tended to be slower than down-directed ones.

Discussion

To motivate future research, an ecological theory of asymmetric pre-saccadic inhibition was presented to explain the collection of vertical saccadic regularities. For example, given that the theory proposes strong inhibition for the releasing of reflexive down-directed prosaccades (cued by an attracting peripheral target below eye fixation), and weak inhibition for the releasing of up-directed prosaccades (cued by an attracting peripheral target above eye fixation), a prediction for future studies is longer reaction times for vertical anti-saccade cues above eye fixation. Finally, the present study with healthy individuals demonstrates a rationale for further study of vertical saccades in psychiatric disorders, as bio-markers for brain pathology.

Brief, prior, exposure to red decreases categorical and coordinate spatial task performance

Location information is processed through two types of spatial processing; categorical and coordinate processing. Categorical spatial relations indicate where an object is relative to another object, without regard to the metric distance between the two objects. Coordinate spatial relations indicate metric distance without regard to relative location. In human behavioral studies, the magnocellular pathway of the lateral geniculate nucleus has been implicated in coordinate spatial processing abilities. Magnocellular pathway cells (type IV) have a center surround organization, such that red light inhibits neuronal firing. In these behavioral studies, red stimuli decreases coordinate spatial processing accuracy. Prior studies also show that there is a lag between the time of visual stimulus presentation and the time of observing a neural response in the magnocellular pathway. We sought to understand whether prior presentation of red stimuli decreases coordinate spatial performance, and also examined its effects on categorical spatial performance. The results indicate that prior presentation of red stimuli decreases accuracy and perceived confidence on both the categorical and coordinate tasks. These results confirm prior findings of the association between magnocellular pathway function and coordinate spatial processing. Implications for categorical task results and associated neural pathways are discussed.

Fixating at far distance shortens reaction time to peripheral visual stimuli at specific locations

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether the fixation distance in real three-dimensional space affects manual reaction time to peripheral visual stimuli. Light-emitting diodes were used for presenting a fixation point and four peripheral visual stimuli. The visual stimuli were located at a distance of 45cm and at 25° in the left, right, upper, and lower directions from the sagittal axis including the fixation point. Near (30cm), Middle (45cm), Far (90cm), and Very Far (300cm) fixation distance conditions were used. When one of the four visual stimuli was randomly illuminated, the participants released a button as quickly as possible. Results showed that overall peripheral reaction time decreased as the fixation distance increased. The significant interaction between fixation distance and stimulus location indicated that the effect of fixation distance on reaction time was observed at the left, right, and upper locations but not at the lower location. These results suggest that fixating at far distance would contribute to faster reaction and that the effect is specific to locations in the peripheral visual field. The present findings are discussed in terms of viewer-centered representation, the focus of attention in depth, and visual field asymmetry related to neurological and psychological aspects.

Where did I come from? Where am I going? Functional differences in visual search fixation duration

Real time simulation of visual search behavior can occur only if the control of fixation durations is sufficiently understood. Visual search studies have typically confounded pre- and post-saccadic influences on fixation duration. In the present study, pre- and post-saccadic influences on fixation durations were compared by considering saccade direction. Novel use of a gaze-contingent moving obstructer paradigm also addressed relative contributions of both influences to total fixation duration. As a function of saccade direction, pre-saccadic fixation durations exhibited a different pattern from post-saccadic fixation durations. Post-saccadic fixations were also more strongly influenced by peripheral obstruction than pre-saccadic fixation durations. This suggests that post-saccadic influences may contribute more to fixation durations than pre-saccadic influences. Together, the results demonstrate that it is insufficient to model the control of visual search fixation durations without consideration of pre- and post-saccadic influences.

Effects of lateralized light flash and color on unilateral neglect

PURPOSE

Bottom-up-based sensory stimulation has been useful in promoting recovery from post-stroke neglect. Light and color are salient stimuli for guiding our orienting behaviors and influence the degree of spatial bias. This study evaluated the effects of lateralized light flash and color on spatial bias in unilateral neglect (UN).

METHOD

We enrolled 15 individuals with UN as a consequence of a right hemispheric stroke of less than 65 d. This was a 3 × 3 design study with three conditions of lens color (colorless, red, and blue) and three conditions of flash light locations (no flash, left, and right).

RESULTS

All participants showed a decrease in ipsilesional spatial bias under left-side light flash and a red lens. Right-side light flash and a blue lens induced more rightward bias than other conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

This evidence confirms the use of sensory stimulation to complement post-stroke UN remediation. Lateralized light flash to the contralesional space and red-colored lenses have beneficial effects on amelioration of UN, whereas ipsilesional light flash and the color blue may exacerbate ipsilesional spatial bias in stroke survivors with UN. Implications for Rehabilitation Contralesional light flash and the color red may ameliorate ipsilesional spatial bias in stroke survivors with unilateral neglect (UN). Ipsilesional flash of light and the color blue may worsen ipsilesional spatial bias in stroke survivors with UN.

Effect of visual field presentation on action planning (estimating reach) in children

In this article, the authors examined the effects of target information presented in different visual fields (lower, upper, central) on estimates of reach via use of motor imagery in children (5-11 years old) and young adults. Results indicated an advantage for estimating reach movements for targets placed in lower visual field (LoVF), with all groups having greater difficulty in the upper visual field (UpVF) condition, especially 5- and 7-year-olds. Complementing these results was an overall age-related increase in accuracy. Based in part on the equivalence hypothesis suggesting that motor imagery and motor planning and execution are similar, the findings support previous work of executed behaviors showing that there is a LoVF bias for motor skill actions of the hand. Given that previous research hints that the UpVF may be bias for visuospatial (perceptual) qualities, research in that area and its association with visuomotor processing (LoVF) should be considered.

Differential vertical visual latency as determined with a simultaneity paradigm

Behavioral studies, as well as anatomical and physiological data, suggest differences in functionality for inferior and superior visual fields. Previous investigations comparing latencies of the two fields have employed motor reaction times. This approach is of limited usefulness in elderly clinical populations where various degrees of motor impairment may be present. In this report, we describe a simultaneity paradigm that allows the determination of relative latencies without dependence on motor reaction times. A slightly, but statistically significant, shorter latency (3.9+/-5.9ms) was found for the superior visual field. The results are not affected by age, and both within- and between-session variability are low.
