Abstract
BACKGROUND The existing data about language recovery in bilingual patients come from few studies on acute lesional deficits like stroke or traumatic injury. Still, little is known about the neuroplasticity potential of bilingual patients who undergo resection of gliomas affecting language-eloquent brain regions. In this study, we prospectively evaluated the pre- and postoperative language functions among bilinguals with eloquent region gliomas. METHODS We have prospectively collected the preoperative, 3-month and 6-month postoperative data from patients with tumors infiltrating the dominant hemisphere language areas during a 15-month period. Validated Persian/Turkish version of Western Aphasia Battery test and Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination were assessed for main language (L1) and second acquired languages (L2) in each visit. RESULTS Twenty-two right-handed bilingual patients were enrolled, and language proficiencies were assessed using mixed model analysis. On baseline and postoperative points, L1 had higher scores in all Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination and Western Aphasia Battery subdomains than L2. Both languages had deterioration at 3-month visit; however, L2 was significantly more deteriorated in all domains. At 6-month visit, both L1 and L2 showed recovery; however, L2 recovered to a less extent than L1. The single most parameter affecting the ultimate language outcome in this study was the preoperative functional level of L1. CONCLUSIONS This study shows L1 is less vulnerable to operative insults and L2 may be damaged even when L1 is preserved. We would suggest the more sensitive L2 be used as the screening tool and L1 be used for confirmation of positive responses during language mapping.

Abstract
Central nervous system (CNS) tumors are mainly diagnosed by physical symptoms such as paralysis, visual field defect, seizure, and loss of consciousness. The psychological and psychiatric background of CNS tumors, whether in preoperative or postoperative period, has long been a neglected topic; however, lately, many authors and researchers have paid more attention to these manifestations. Neurocognition is a subset of parameters, including attention, memory, mood, emotions, language production, personality, executive function, problem-solving, calculation, and spatial cognition, making up the patient's cognitive performance. Also, it is worthy to say that neurocognition is considered a parameter of quality of life (QoL). Currently, we know that neurocognitive disorders are a group of symptoms presenting by the patients. These symptoms may be the first picture of CNS lesions, which result in incorrect treatment, a higher financial burden on the patient and health system, and finally, poorer QoL and performance scale if they are not diagnosed early. Psychological and psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, and phobia following the CNS tumors have two aspects. These may present before any treatment resulting from the tumoral mass effect, peritumoral edema, or cerebral tissue disruption due to the space-occupying lesion. On the other hand, we can see these features after a kind of therapy such as surgery, medical therapy, or adjuvant therapy. Sometimes, the CNS tumors lead to psychosocial complications postoperatively. Indeed, considering tumor surgery complications, some patients may find various degrees of deficits that make the patient isolated either socially or professionally. Obviously, the improvement rate and outcome of this specific situation depend on the mechanism of occurrence and its causes. For instance, postoperative symptom relief would be expected when the symptoms are related to the tumoral mass effect. Getting familiar with this constellation of the symptoms, realizing them, and then localizing them to the correct area of the CNS are very crucial. Accordingly, because of their importance in QoL, their influence on patient's survival even more than the extent of resection of the tumor, and somehow their ignorance, we will discuss different neurocognitive manifestations related to CNS tumors in this chapter.

Abstract
Objective Dysphagia after cerebral infarction (DYS) has been detected in several brain regions through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). In this study, we used two rs-fMRI measures to investigate the changes in brain function activity in DYS and their correlations with dysphagia severity. Method In this study, a total of 22 patients with DYS were compared with 30 patients without dysphagia (non-DYS) and matched for baseline characteristics. Then, rs-fMRI scans were performed in both groups, and regional homogeneity (ReHo) and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) values were calculated in both groups. The two-sample t-test was used to compare ReHo and fALFF between the groups. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the correlations between the ReHo and fALFF of the abnormal brain regions and the scores of the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), the Standardized Bedside Swallowing Assessment (SSA), the Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS), and the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS). Results Compared with the non-DYS group, the DYS group showed decreased ReHo values in the left thalamus, the left parietal lobe, and the right temporal lobe and significantly decreased fALFF values in the right middle temporal gyrus and the inferior parietal lobule. In the DYS group, the ReHo of the right temporal lobe was positively correlated with the SSA score and the PAS score (r = 0.704, p < 0.001 and r = 0.707, p < 0.001, respectively) but negatively correlated with the VFSS score (r = −0.741, p < 0.001). The ReHo of the left parietal lobe was positively correlated with SSA and PAS (r = 0.621, p = 0.002 and r = 0.682, p < 0.001, respectively) but negatively correlated with VFSS (r = −0.679, p = 0.001). Conclusion The changes in the brain function activity of these regions are related to dysphagia severity. The DYS group with high ReHo values in the right temporal and left parietal lobes had severe dysphagia.

Abstract
Bilingualism has been shown to induce neuroplasticity in the brain, but conflicting evidence regarding its specific effects in grey matter continues to emerge, probably due to methodological differences between studies, as well as approaches that may miss the variability and dynamicity of bilingual experience. In our study, we devised a continuous score of bilingual experiences and we investigated their non-linear effects on regional GM volume in a sample of young healthy participants from an immersive and naturalistic bilingual environment. We focused our analyses on cortical and subcortical regions that had been previously proposed as part of the bilingual speech pipeline and language control network. Our results showed a non-linear relationship between bilingualism score and grey matter volume of the inferior frontal gyrus. We also found linear increases in volumes of putamen and cerebellum as a function of bilingualism score. These results go in line with predictions for immersive and naturalistic bilingual environments with increased intensity and diversity of language use and provide further evidence supporting the dynamicity of bilingualism’s effects on brain structure.

Abstract
A large body of research has indicated that bilingualism - through continual practice in language control - may impact cognitive functions, as well as relevant aspects of brain function and structure. The present review aimed to bring together findings on the relationship between bilingualism and domain-general cognitive functions from a neural perspective. The final sample included 210 studies, covering findings regarding neural responses to bilingual language control and/or domain-general cognitive tasks, as well as findings regarding effects of bilingualism on non-task-related brain function and brain structure. The evidence indicates that a) bilingual language control likely entails neural mechanisms responsible for domain-general cognitive functions; b) bilingual experiences impact neural responses to domain-general cognitive functions; and c) bilingual experiences impact non-task-related brain function (both resting-state and metabolic function) as well as aspects of brain structure (both macrostructure and microstructure), each of which may in turn impact mental processes, including domain-general cognitive functions. Such functional and structural neuroplasticity associated with bilingualism may contribute to both cognitive and neural reserves, producing benefits across the lifespan.

Abstract
Debate continues on whether a bilingual advantage exists with respect to executive functioning. This report synthesized the results of 170 studies to test whether the bilingual advantage is dependent on the task used to assess executive functioning and the age of the participants. The results of the meta-analyses indicated that the bilingual advantage was both task- and age-specific. Bilinguals were significantly faster than monolinguals (Hedges' g values ranged from 0.23 to 0.34), and significantly more accurate than monolinguals (Hedges' g values ranged between 0.18 and 0.49) on four out of seven tasks. Also, an effect of age was found whereby the bilingual advantage was larger for studies comprising samples aged 50-years and over (Hedges' g = 0.49), compared to those undertaken with participants aged between 18 and 29 years (Hedges' g = 0.12). The extent to which the bilingual advantage might be due to publication bias was assessed using multiple methods. These were Egger's Test of Asymmetry, Duval and Tweedie's Trim and Fill, Classic Fail-Safe N, and PET-PEESE. Publication bias was only found when using Egger's Test of Asymmetry and PET-PEESE method, but not when using the other methods. This review indicates that if bilingualism does enhance executive functioning, the effects are modulated by task and age. This may arise because using multiple languages has a highly specific effect on executive functioning which is only observable in older, relative to younger, adults. The finding that publication bias was not uniformly detected across the different methods raises questions about the impact that unpublished (or undetected) studies have on meta-analyses of this literature.
