Abstract
Perception of external cues is important for enhancing the fitness and survival of animals. However, the role of odor perception in regulation of longevity and health is incompletely defined. Here, we show that the exposure to an aversive odor 2-nonanone reduces life span, brood size, feeding rate, and increases lipid storage in worms. These effects are restored to normal levels in mutant worms lacking functional olfactory AWB neurons, suggesting a potential role of odor perception in the regulation of animal physiology and longevity.

Abstract
Zhuyeqing liquor (ZYQL) is well-known traditional functional liquor in China that contains twelve crude drugs. Studies have shown that ZYQL has many beneficial effects, but its anti-aging effect has not been reported. Here, we found that ZYQL had excellent antioxidant activity in vitro. In C. elegans, ZYQL could significantly extend the lifespan, and decreased aging related phenotype including accumulation of lipofuscin and the decrease of food intake and motility. Further, ZYQL significantly reduced ROS level and enhanced the antioxidant defense in C. elegans. ZYQL increased transcriptional activity of transcription factors HSF-1 and SKN-1, and ZYQL-mediated longevity was dependent on these factors. Taken together, the data suggested that ZYQL enhanced the transcriptional activity of transcription factors HSF-1 and SKN-1, which in turn increased oxidative/heat stress resistance to exert its anti-aging effect in C. elegans. Our results provide new insights into the beneficial effects and underlying mechanisms of ZYQL, which might be useful for further developing ZYQL into health or anti-aging beverages.

Abstract
Chinese baijiu, an ancient fermented alcoholic beverage, contains ethanol and a variety of compounds. One of the most popular types of Chinese baijiu is Jiang-flavor baijiu. To investigate the effects of Jiang-flavor baijiu on organ function and gut microbiota, we developed a moderate drinking mouse model and studied its effects on the liver, kidney biomarkers, memory function, and gut microbiota. The results showed that ethanol caused more hepatic steatosis, liver and kidney damage, and memory impairment than Jiang-flavour baijiu consumption. Furthermore, Jiang-flavor baijiu altered the gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of beneficial taxa such as Lactobacillus and Akkermansia, whereas ethanol increased the abundance of harmful bacteria such as Prevotella and Mucispirillum. Our findings provide preliminary evidence that moderate dose Jiang-flavor baijiu regulates gut microbiota and organ function and provide a theoretical foundation for future research on the positive health effects of particular varieties of Chinese baijiu.

Abstract
The past decades have witnessed a dogmatic shift from glia as supporting cells in the nervous system to their active roles in neurocentric functions. Neurons and glia communicate and show bidirectional responses through tripartite synapses. Studies across species indicate that neurotransmitters released by neurons are perceived by glial receptors, which allow for gliotransmitter release. These gliotransmitters can result in activation of neurons via neuronal GPCR receptors. However, studies of these molecular interactions are in their infancy. Caenorhabditis elegans has a conserved neuron-glia architectural repertoire with molecular and functional resemblance to mammals. Further, glia in C. elegans can be manipulated through ablation and mutations allowing for deciphering of glial dependent processes in vivo at single glial resolutions. Here, we will review recent findings from vertebrate and invertebrate organisms with a focus on how C. elegans can be used to advance our understanding of neuron-glia interactions through GPCRs.

Abstract
Environmental stimuli such as temperature, food, and smell significantly influence the physiology and behavior of animals. Animals are differentially adapted to maintain their internal body functions in response to varied environmental conditions. These external cues are sensed by specialized neurons which are a part of the chemosensory and thermosensory systems. The inability to respond correctly to varied environmental conditions may result in compromised bodily functions and reduced longevity. For example, the ability to sense food is derived from the integrated action of olfactory and gustatory systems. The damage to the olfactory system will affect our decision of palatable food items which in turn can affect the response of the gustatory system, ultimately causing abnormal feeding habits. Recent studies have provided evidence that aging is regulated by sensory perception of environment. Aging is one of the most common causes of various neurodegenerative diseases and the perception of environmental cues is also found to regulate the development of neurodegenerative phenotype in several animal models. However, specific molecular signaling pathways involved in the process are not completely understood. The research conducted on one of the best-studied animal models of aging, Caenorhabditis elegans, has demonstrated multiple examples of gene-environment interaction at the neuronal level which affects life span. The findings may be useful to identify the key neuronal regulators of aging and age-related diseases in humans owing to conserved core metabolic and aging pathways from worms to humans.

Abstract
Aromatherapy has been widely used as complementary and alternative medicine to reduce pain and induce sleep. However, the scientific evidence regarding the biological effects of odor is scarce and the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been clarified. We treated worms with contactless S-(-)- and R-(+)-α-pinene and analyzed heat stress tolerance. Odor stimulation induced motility recovery after incubation at 35 °C for 4 h. This increase in heat stress tolerance was not present in odr-3 mutants and daf-16 mutants. S-(-)- and R-(+)-α-pinene expanded health span and increased fat accumulation. Moreover, S-(-)- and R-(+)-α-pinene modulated the expression of 84 and 54 genes, respectively. These results show that α-pinene odor stimulation is related to stress tolerance, lipid metabolism, and health span via some specific signaling pathways. This study may provide a potential target for antiaging and disease prevention.

Abstract
Aromatherapy uses plant essential oils and fragrant ingredients for relaxation, sleep assistance, and improvement of restlessness related to dementia. Certain aromatic substances increase the life span and stress tolerance of nematodes. We investigated effects of exposure to linalool, a linear chain monoterpenic alcohol that is present in the essential oils of many plants, and its optical isomer, l-linalool, in Caenorhabditis elegans. Nematodes were repelled by the odor of both linalool and l-linalool; however, linalool odor stimulation decreased fat accumulation and increased motility after thermal stress. Analysis of a gene-deficient mutant revealed that the DAF-16 insulin-signaling pathway, which is involved in heat stress tolerance, was enhanced by linalool treatment. Linalool stimulation increased the expression of downstream genes such as sod-3 and hsp-12.6 via DAF-16. We conclude that linalool odor induces a repelling behavior in nematodes, improves heat stress tolerance through the DAF-16 signaling pathway, and affects fat accumulation.
