Abstract
Resveratrol has been reported to promote immunity and decrease oxidative stress, but which demonstrates biphasic effects relied on the use concentration. In this study, the effects of diet supplement with a relative high concentration of resveratrol (0.32 mg/kg) on metabolism, antioxidation and apoptosis of liver were investigated in Siberian sturgeon. The results showed that resveratrol significantly increased the lipid synthesis and the apoptosis, but did not either activate the antioxidant NRF2/KEAP1 pathway or enhance the antioxidant enzyme activity. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant changes in regulatory pathways related to glycolipid, including PPAR signaling pathway, Insulin signaling pathway, Fatty acid biosynthesis, and Glycolysis/Gluconeogenesis. In addition, resveratrol significantly increased the lipid synthesis genes (accα and fas), fatty acid transport gene (fatp 6) and gluconeogenesis gene (gck), but decreased the survival-promoting genes (gadd45β and igf 1). These findings highlight a significant effect of resveratrol on glycolipid metabolism in Siberian sturgeon. Moreover, this study also demonstrated that 0.32 mg/kg resveratrol has physiological toxicity to the liver of Siberian sturgeon, indicating that this dose is too high for Siberian sturgeon. Thus, our study provides a valuable insight for future research and application of resveratrol in fish.

Abstract
Foodborne diseases triggered by various infectious micro-organisms are contributing significantly to the global disease burden as well as to increasing mortality rates. Salmonella enterica belongs to the most prevalent form of bacteria accountable for significant burden of foodborne illness across the globe. The conventional therapeutic approach to cater to Salmonella enterica-based infections relies on antibiotic therapy, but the rapid emergence of the antibiotic resistance strains of Salmonella sp. necessitates the development of alternative treatment and prevention strategies. In light of this growing concern, the scientific community is rigorously exploring novel phytochemicals harnessed from medicinally important plants as a promising approach to curb Salmonella enterica infections. A variety of phytochemicals belonging to alkaloids, phenols, flavonoid, and terpene classes are reported to exhibit their inhibitory activity against bacterial cell communication, membrane proteins, efflux pumps, and biofilm formation among drug resistant Salmonella strains. The present review article delves to discuss the emergence of antibiotic resistance among Salmonella enterica strains, various plant sources, identification of phytochemicals, and the current state of research on the use of phytochemicals as antimicrobial agents against Salmonella enterica, shedding light on the promising potential of phytochemicals in the fight against this pathogen.

Abstract
Antimicrobial drugs have made outstanding contributions to the treatment of pathogenic infections. However, the emergence of drug resistance continues to be a major threat to human health in recent years, and therefore, the search for novel antimicrobial drugs is particularly urgent. With a deeper understanding of microbial habits and drug resistance mechanisms, various creative strategies for the development of novel antibiotics have been proposed. Stilbenoids, characterized by a C6-C2-C6 carbon skeleton, have recently been widely recognized for their flexible antimicrobial roles. Here, we comprehensively summarize the mode of action of stilbenoids from the viewpoint of their direct antimicrobial properties, antibiofilm and antivirulence activities and their role in reversing drug resistance. This review will provide an important reference for the future development and research into the mechanisms of stilbenoids as antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Mosquitoes transmit many disease-relevant flaviviruses. Efficient viral transmission to mammalian hosts requires mosquito salivary factors. However, the specific salivary components facilitating viral transmission and their mechanisms of action remain largely unknown. Here, we show that a female mosquito salivary gland-specific protein, here named A. aegypti Neutrophil Recruitment Protein (AaNRP), facilitates the transmission of Zika and dengue viruses. AaNRP promotes a rapid influx of neutrophils, followed by virus-susceptible myeloid cells toward mosquito bite sites, which facilitates establishment of local infection and systemic dissemination. Mechanistically, AaNRP engages TLR1 and TLR4 of skin-resident macrophages and activates MyD88-dependent NF-κB signaling to induce the expression of neutrophil chemoattractants. Inhibition of MyD88-NF-κB signaling with the dietary phytochemical resveratrol reduces AaNRP-mediated enhancement of flavivirus transmission by mosquitoes. These findings exemplify how salivary components can aid viral transmission, and suggest a potential prophylactic target.

Abstract
Colistin (COL), the last line of defense in clinical medicine, is an important therapeutic option against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. In this context, the emergence of colistin-resistant (COL-R) bacteria mediated by broad-spectrum efflux pumps, mobile genetic elements, and biofilm formation poses a significant public health concern. In response to this challenge, a novel approach of combining COL with usnic acid (UA) has been proposed in this study. UA is a secondary metabolite derived from lichens and is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of UA and COL against COL-R Enterobacteriaceae both in vitro and in vivo. The exceptional synergistic antibacterial activity exhibited by the combination of COL and UA was demonstrated by performing a comprehensive set of assays, including the checkerboard assay, time-dependent killing assay, and Live/Dead bacterial cell viability assay. Furthermore, crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy assays revealed the inhibitory effect of this combination on the biofilm formation. Mechanistically, the combination of UA and COL exacerbated cell membrane rupture, induced DNA damage, and generated a significant amount of reactive oxygen species, which ultimately resulted in bacterial cell death. In addition, erythrocyte hemolysis and cell viability tests confirmed the biocompatibility of the combination. The evaluation of the COL/UA combination in vivo using Galleria mellonella larvae and a mouse infection model showed a significant improvement in the survival rate of the infected larvae as well as a reduction in the bacterial load in the mouse thigh muscle. These findings, for the first time, provide strong evidence for the potential application of COL/UA as an effective alternative therapeutic option to combat infections caused by COL-R Enterobacteriaceae strains.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Man has used honey to treat diseases since ancient times, perhaps even before the history of medicine itself. Several civilizations have utilized natural honey as a functional and therapeutic food to ward off infections. Recently, researchers worldwide have been focusing on the antibacterial effects of natural honey against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. AIM OF THE STUDY This review aims to summarize research on the use of honey properties and constituents with their anti-bacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing mechanisms of action. Further, honey's bacterial products, including probiotic organisms and antibacterial agents which are produced to curb the growth of other competitor microorganisms is addressed. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this review, we have provided a comprehensive overview of the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing activities of honey and their mechanisms of action. Furthermore, the review addressed the effects of antibacterial agents of honey from bacterial origin. Relevant information on the antibacterial activity of honey was obtained from scientific online databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. RESULTS Honey's antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing activities are mostly attributed to four key components: hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal, bee defensin-1, and phenolic compounds. The performance of bacteria can be altered by honey components, which impact their cell cycle and cell morphology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that specifically summarizes every phenolic compound identified in honey along with their potential antibacterial mechanisms of action. Furthermore, certain strains of beneficial lactic acid bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Fructobacillus, and Lactobacillaceae, as well as Bacillus species can survive and even grow in honey, making it a potential delivery system for these agents. CONCLUSION Honey could be regarded as one of the best complementary and alternative medicines. The data presented in this review will enhance our knowledge of some of honey's therapeutic properties as well as its antibacterial activities.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by continuous inflammation in the colonic mucosa. Extraintestinal manifestations (EIM) occur due to the disruption of the intestinal barrier and increased permeability caused by redox imbalance, dysbiosis, and inflammation originating from the intestine and contribute to morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of oral N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on colonic, hepatic, and renal tissues in mice with colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Male Swiss mice received NAC (150 mg/kg/day) in the drinking water for 30 days before and during (DSS 5% v/v; for 7 days) colitis induction. On the 38th day, colon, liver, and kidney were collected and adequately prepared for the analysis of oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reduced (GSH), glutathione oxidized (GSSG), malondialdehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)) and inflammatory biomarkers (myeloperoxidase (MPO) -, tumor necrosis factor alpha - (TNF-α, and interleukin-10 (IL-10)). In colon, NAC protected the histological architecture. However, NAC did not level up SOD, in contrast, it increased MDA and pro-inflammatory effect (increased of TNF-α and decreased of IL-10). In liver, colitis caused both oxidative (MDA, SOD, and GSH) and inflammatory damage (IL-10). NAC was able only to increase GSH and GSH/GSSG ratio. Kidney was not affected by colitis; however, NAC despite increasing CAT, GSH, and GSH/GSSG ratio promoted lipid peroxidation (increased MDA) and pro-inflammatory action (decreased IL-10). Despite some beneficial antioxidant effects of NAC, the negative outcomes concerning irreversible oxidative and inflammatory damage in the colon, liver, and kidney confirm the nonsafety of the prophylactic use of this antioxidant in models of induced colitis, suggesting that additional studies are needed, and its use in humans not yet recommended for the therapeutic routine of this disease.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and resveratrol (RS) on Listeria monocytogenes and their application in chicken meat preservation. BITC combined with RS (BR) significantly enhanced the antimicrobial activity and inhibited the growth of Listeria monocytogenes within 24 h compared to individual treatment, as well as suppressing bacterial swimming and swarming motility, reducing biofilm formation by 56.4%, increasing cell membrane disruption, and inducing intracellular ROS surges. Synergistic effects were associated with the inhibition of biofilm formation, cell membrane destruction, and ROS production. Biofilm removal facilitated the direct antimicrobial action of BR. RS disrupted cell membrane permeability, allowing more BITC into the cells, resulting in increased intracellular antibacterial levels, cell membrane hyperpolarization, and rapid ROS accumulation. Furthermore, BR visibly slowed the microbial growth in chicken flesh stored at 25 °C and 4 °C. Therefore, BR is expected to be a new strategy for food preservation.

Abstract
Shikonin has anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing activities. Vibrio vulnificus is an important marine foodborne pathogen with a high fatality rate and rapid pathogenesis that can infect humans through ingestion and wounds. In this study, the antibacterial activity and possible antibacterial mechanism of shikonin against V. vulnificus were investigated. In addition, the ability of shikonin to control V. vulnificus infection in both pathways was assessed by artificially contaminated oysters and full-thickness excised skin-infected mice. Shikonin treatment can cause abnormal cell membrane function, as evidenced by hyperpolarization of the cell membrane, significant decreased intracellular ATP concentration (p < 0.05), significant increased intracellular reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde content (p < 0.05), decreased cell membrane integrity, and changes in cell morphology. Shikonin at 40 and 80 μg/mL reduced bacterial numbers in shikonin-contaminated oysters by 3.58 and 2.18 log colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL. Shikonin can promote wound healing in mice infected with V. vulnificus by promoting the formation of granulation tissue, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands, promoting epithelial cell regeneration and epidermal growth factor production. These findings suggest that shikonin has a strong inactivation effect on V. vulnificus and can be used in food production and wound healing to effectively control V. vulnificus and reduce the number of diseases associated with it.

Abstract
Shigella sonnei is a species of Shigella, and the infection rate of S. sonnei is increasing year by year. Eugenol is an active ingredient in clove essential oil and is a generally recognized as safe (GRAS)-certified food ingredient. The mechanism of inhibition of S. sonnei by eugenol has been investigated in this study. The minimum inhibitory concentration of eugenol against both S. sonnei ATCC 25931 and S. sonnei CMCC 51592 was 0.5 mg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for both strains was 0.8 mg/mL. The inhibition effect of eugenol against S. sonnei was due to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in cells, changed cell membrane permeability, and induced cell membrane dysfunction, for instance, cell membrane hyperpolarization and intracellular ATP concentration drops. The results of confocal laser scanning microscope and field emission scanning electron microscopy showed that eugenol leads to decreased cell membrane integrity, resulting in changed cell morphology. Moreover, eugenol inactivated S. sonnei in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth and lettuce juice. These results indicated that eugenol could inactivate S. sonnei and has the potential to control S. sonnei in the food industry.

Abstract
Shigella sonnei (S. sonnei) infection accounted for approximately 75% of annual outbreaks of shigellosis, with the vast majority of outbreaks due to the consumption of contaminated foods (e.g., fresh vegetables, potato salad, fish, beef, etc.). Thus, we investigated the antibacterial effect and mechanism of linalool on S. sonnei and evaluated the effect of linalool on the sensory quality of lettuce. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of linalool against S. sonnei ATCC 25931 was 1.5 mg/mL. S. sonnei was treated with linalool at 1× MIC for 30 min and the amount of bacteria was decreased below the detection limit (1 CFU/mL) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and Luria-Bertani (LB) medium. The bacterial content of the lettuce surface was reduced by 4.33 log CFU/cm2 after soaking with linalool at 2× MIC. Treatment with linalool led to increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, decreased intracellular adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) content, increased membrane lipid oxidation, damaged cell membrane integrity, and hyperpolarized cell membrane potential in S. sonnei. The application of linalool to lettuce had no effect on the color of lettuce compared to the control. The sensory evaluation results showed that linalool had an acceptable effect on the sensory quality of lettuce. These findings indicate that linalool played an antibacterial effect against S. sonnei and had potential as a natural antimicrobial for the inhibition of this foodborne pathogen.

Abstract
Oregano essential oil (OEO) possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cancer-suppressive properties. Enterococcus faecalis is a foodborne opportunistic pathogen that can be found in nature and the food processing industry. The goal of this investigation was to explore the antimicrobial action and mechanism of OEO against E. faecalis, inactivation action of OEO on E. faecalis in mature biofilms, and its application in chicken breast. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of OEO against E. faecalis strains (ATCC 29212 and nine isolates) ranged from 0.25 to 0.50 μL/mL. OEO therapy reduced intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, caused cell membrane hyperpolarization, increased the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and elevated extracellular malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations. Furthermore, OEO treatment diminished cell membrane integrity and caused morphological alterations in the cells. In biofilms on stainless-steel, OEO showed effective inactivation activity against E. faecalis. OEO reduced the number of viable cells, cell viability and exopolysaccharides in the biofilm, as well as destroying its structure. Application of OEO on chicken breast results in a considerable reduction in E. faecalis counts and pH values, in comparison to control samples. These findings suggest that OEO could be utilized as a natural antibacterial preservative and could effectively control E. faecalis in food manufacturing.

Abstract
In the era of antimicrobial resistance, the identification of new compounds with strong antimicrobial activity and the development of alternative therapies to fight drug-resistant bacteria are urgently needed. Here, we have used resveratrol, a safe and well-known plant-derived stilbene with poor antimicrobial properties, as a scaffold to design several new families of antimicrobials by adding different chemical entities at specific positions. We have characterized the mode of action of the most active compounds prepared and have examined their synergistic antibacterial activity in combination with traditional antibiotics. Some alkyl- and silyl-resveratrol derivatives show bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria in the same low micromolar range of traditional antibiotics, with an original mechanism of action that combines membrane permeability activity with ionophore-related activities. No cross-resistance or antagonistic effect was observed with traditional antibiotics. Synergism was observed for some specific general-use antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides and cationic antimicrobial peptide antibiotics. No hemolytic activity was observed at the active concentrations or above, although some low toxicity against an MRC-5 cell line was noted.

Abstract
Background
Salmonella belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family, a gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, motile, and pathogenic bacteria that transmit through unhygienic conditions. It is estimated that 21 million new infections arise every year, resulting in approximately 200,000 deaths. It is more prevalent among children, the old aged, and immunocompromised individuals. The frequent usage of classical antimicrobials has begun the increasing emergence of various drug-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains. Hence, this study was intended to evaluate the bioactive seaweed sulfated polysaccharides (SSPs) against the ompF (outer membrane porin F) protein target of Salmonella typhi. SSP is the sulfated compound with a wide range of biological activities, such as anti-microbial, anti-allergy, anti-cancer, anti-coagulant, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidant, and anti-viral.
Results
In this study, eleven compounds were targeted against S. typhi OmpF by the molecular docking approach and were compared with two commercially available typhoid medications. The SSP showed good binding affinity compared to commercial drugs, particularly carrageenan/MIV-150, carrageenan lambda, fucoidan, and 3-phenyllactate, ranked as top antagonists against OmpF. Further, pharmacokinetics and toxicology (ADMET) studies corroborated that SSP possessed drug-likeness and highly progressed in all parameters.
Conclusions
AutoDockTools and Schrodinger's QikProp module results suggest that SSP could be a promising drug for extensively drug-resistant (XDR) S. typhi. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on in silico analysis of SSP against S. typhi OmpF, thus implying the capabilities of SSPs especially compounds like carrageenans, as a potential anti-microbial agent against Salmonella typhi infections. Eventually, advanced studies could corroborate SSPs to the next level of application in the crisis of XDR microbial diseases.

Abstract
Resistance to colistin, one of the antibiotics of last resort against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, is increasingly reported. Notably, MCR plasmids discovered in 2015 have now been reported worldwide in humans. To keep this antibiotic of last resort efficient, a way to tackle this mechanism seems essential. Terpene alcohols such as farnesol have been shown to improve the efficacy of some antibiotics. However, their high lipophilicity makes them difficult to use. This problem can be solved by encapsulating them in water-dispersible lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). The aim of this study was to discover, using checkerboard tests and time-kill curve experiments, an association between colistin and farnesol or geraniol loaded in LNPs, which would improve the efficacy of colistin against E. coli and, in particular, MCR-1 transconjugants. Then, the effect of the combination on E. coli inner membrane permeabilisation was evaluated using propidium iodide (PI) uptake and compared to human red blood cells plasma membrane permeabilisation. Both terpene alcohols were able to restore the susceptibility of E. coli J53 MCR-1 to colistin with the same efficacy (Emax = 16, i.e., colistin MIC was decreased from 8 to 0.5 mg/L). However, with an EC50 of 2.69 mg/L, farnesol was more potent than geraniol (EC50 = 39.49 mg/L). Time-kill studies showed a bactericidal effect on MCR-1 transconjugant 6 h after incubation, with no regrowth up to 30 h in the presence of 1 mg/L colistin (1/8 MIC) and 60 mg/L or 200 mg/L farnesol or geraniol, respectively. Colistin alone was more potent in increasing PI uptake rate in the susceptible strain (EC50 = 0.86 ± 0.08 mg/L) than in the MCR-1 one (EC50 = 7.38 ± 0.85 mg/L). Against the MCR-1 strain, farnesol-loaded LNP at 60 mg/L enhanced the colistin-induced inner membrane permeabilization effect up to 5-fold and also increased its potency as shown by the decrease in its EC50 from 7.38 ± 0.85 mg/L to 2.69 ± 0.25 mg/L. Importantly, no hemolysis was observed for LNPs loaded with farnesol or geraniol, alone or in combination with colistin, at the concentrations showing the maximum decrease in colistin MICs. The results presented here indicate that farnesol-loaded LNPs should be studied as combination therapy with colistin to prevent the development of resistance to this antibiotic of last resort.

Abstract
Antibiotics are the most powerful weapon against bacterial infectious diseases in aquaculture. However, the indiscriminate usage of antibiotics often culminates in the emerging development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making it imperative to search for novel types of antimicrobial agents. This study investigated the antibacterial and antivirulence effects of vanillic acid (VA) against the fish pathogen, Vibrio alginolyticus. We showed that VA had a good anti-Vibrio activity with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.0 mg/ml. In addition, VA wielded its antibacterial action in a dose-/time-dependent manner by causing cell membrane damage and increasing membrane permeability, which is evidenced by increasing the conductivity and malondialdehyde content in the treated cell cultures and the scanning electron microscopy images. Furthermore, VA significantly reduced the biofilm-forming capability, mobility and exotoxin production (protease and exopolysaccharide) and downregulation of the expression of biofilm- and virulence-associated genes (sypG, fliS, fliK, lafA, lafK, asp and luxR) was seen in the V. alginolyticus that exposed to VA at subinhibitory concentrations. Overall, our findings suggested that VA may be of interest for treating V. alginolyticus-associated infections in aquaculture.

Abstract
The pathophysiology of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders is complex and multifactorial. Polyphenols possess a range of potentially beneficial mechanisms of action that relate to the implicated pathways in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The aim of this review is to highlight the emerging clinical trial and preclinical efficacy data regarding the role of polyphenols in mental and brain health, elucidate novel mechanisms of action including the gut microbiome and gene expression, and discuss the factors that may be responsible for the mixed clinical results; namely, the role of interindividual differences in treatment response and the potentially pro-oxidant effects of some polyphenols. Further clarification as part of larger, well conducted randomized controlled trials that incorporate precision medicine methods are required to inform clinical efficacy and optimal dosing regimens.

Abstract
Bacterial resistance is interfering with the action of antibiotics for clinical use in treating pathologies. The search for new substances capable of combating this resistance is necessary. An alternative to the search for these substances is in the extract of medicinal plants. Plathymenia reticulata, plant of the Fabaceae family, is a common tree species from the Brazilian cerrado, and is commonly used in areas of environmental degradation. This species is rich in phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids and tannins, compounds that are associated with various biological effects. A hydroethanolic extract from the bark of Plathymenia reticulata (HEPrB) was produced and then tests were carried out to verify the direct antibacterial activity, the modulatory effect of antibiotics for clinical use and their toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster flies. Through the analysis with UPLC, a wide variety of flavonoids contained in the HEPrB was observed. Direct antibacterial activity was observed for the standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus, however, the extract showed antagonistic activity or no significance in relation to the antibiotics tested in this study. As for toxicity, the HEPrB did not show significant damage in the proposed model. The results emphasize care when associating the consumption of teas with treatments with antibiotics for clinical use.

Abstract
Stilbenoids (resveratrol and its derivatives) are secondary metabolites produced by plants as defence mechanism to microbial infection. These compounds are known for their anti-inflammatory action and health benefits in preventing a wide range of disorders (e.g. cancer and cardiovascular diseases). However, their antimicrobial properties are less investigated. A series of 8 stilbenoid compounds were synthesized and their antifungal activity against 19 wild strains of filamentous fungi and yeasts (isolated from the environment and food) was tested in vitro. Using an agar diffusion assay, compounds were tested at the concentration of 100 μg/ml on filamentous fungi and yeasts at 104 CFU/ml. The results showed that tested derivatives possess moderate antifungal activity: in particular, monomeric stilbenoids 3'-hydroxy-pterostilbene and piceatannol, and dimeric stilbenoids (±)-trans-δ-viniferin and pallidol were active against mycotoxigenic fungi.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a polyphenolic antioxidant whose possible health benefits include anticarcinogenic, antiaging, and antimicrobial properties that have gained significant attention. The compound is well accepted by individuals and has been commonly used as a nutraceutical in recent decades. Its widespread usage makes it essential to study as a single agent as well as in combination with traditional prescription antibiotics as regards to antimicrobial properties. Resveratrol demonstrates the action of antimicrobials against a remarkable bacterial diversity, viruses, and fungus. This report explains resveratrol as an all-natural antimicrobial representative. It may modify the bacterial virulence qualities resulting in decreased toxic substance production, biofilm inhibition, motility reduction, and quorum sensing disturbance. Moreover, in conjunction with standard antibiotics, resveratrol improves aminoglycoside efficacy versus Staphylococcus aureus, while it antagonizes the deadly function of fluoroquinolones against S. aureus and also Escherichia coli. The present study aimed to thoroughly review and study the antimicrobial potency of resveratrol, expected to help researchers pave the way for solving antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract
Candida albicans is one of the most common clinical pathogenic microorganisms and it is becoming a serious health threat, particularly to immunocompromised populations. Drug resistance of Candida species has also frequently emerged, and combination therapy for fungal infections has attracted considerable attention. In this study, we established the Qinling Mountains myxobacterial secondary metabolites library and a synergic assay in combination with ketoconazole against C. albicans was introduced for metabolites screening. Two active compounds with synergic anticandidal activities were obtained, which were identified as trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol. According to our study, resveratrol can reduce the dosage to 1/64 of ketoconazole as well as itraconazole. Furthermore, synergistic anticandidal activity of resveratrol combined with azoles was verified against a panel of clinical C. albicans isolates, and the combination strategy enhanced the azoles susceptibility of three fluconazole-resistant isolates. These findings suggest that resveratrol enhances the efficacy of azoles and provides a promising application in therapy of C. albicans infection.

Abstract
Resveratrol has been extensively studied due to its potential health benefits in multiple diseases, for example, cancer, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Besides these properties, resveratrol displays inhibitory activity against a wide range of bacterial species; however, the cellular effects of resveratrol in bacteria remain incompletely understood, especially in the human pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, we aimed to identify intrinsic resistance genes that aid S. aureus in tolerating the activity of resveratrol. We screened the Nebraska Transposon Mutant Library, consisting of 1920 mutants with inactivation of non-essential genes in S. aureus JE2, for increased susceptibly to resveratrol. On agar plates containing 0.5× the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), 17 transposon mutants failed to grow. Of these, four mutants showed a two-fold reduction in MIC, being the clpP protease mutant and three mutants with deficiencies in the electron transport chain (menD, hemB, aroC). The remaining 13 mutants did not show a reduction in MIC, but were confirmed by spot-assays to have increased susceptibility to resveratrol. Several genes were associated with DNA damage repair (recJ, xerC and xseA). Treatment of S. aureus JE2 with sub-inhibitory concentrations of resveratrol did not affect the expression of recJ, xerC and xseA, but increased expression of the SOS-stress response genes lexA and recA, suggesting that resveratrol interferes with DNA integrity in S. aureus. Expression of error-prone DNA polymerases are part of the SOS-stress response and we could show that sub-inhibitory concentrations of resveratrol increased overall mutation frequency as measured by formation of rifampicin resistant mutants. Our data show that DNA repair systems are important determinants aiding S. aureus to overcome the inhibitory activity of resveratrol. Activation of the SOS response by resveratrol could potentially facilitate the development of resistance towards conventional antibiotics in S. aureus.

Besides their important impacts on grape and wine quality, this class of compounds has beneficial effects on human health. Due to their antioxidant activity, polyphenols and phenolic acids can act as anti-inflammatory and anticancerogenic agents, and can modulate the immune system. In grape berries, polyphenols and phenolic acids can be located in the pericarp and seeds, but distribution differs considerably among these tissues. Although some classes of polyphenols and phenolic acids are under strict genetic control, the final content is highly influenced by environmental factors, such as climate, soil, vineyard, and management. This review aims to present the main classes of polyphenolic compounds and phenolic acids in different berry tissues and grape varieties and special emphasis on their beneficial effect on human health.

Abstract
The polyphenolic compound resveratrol has been shown to exert health-beneficial properties. Given globally emerging Campylobacter infections in humans, we addressed potential anti-pathogenic, immuno-modulatory and intestinal epithelial barrier preserving properties of synthetic resveratrol in the present preclinical intervention study applying a murine acute campylobacteriosis model. Two days following peroral C. jejuni infection, secondary abiotic IL-10−/− mice were either subjected to resveratrol or placebo via the drinking water. Whereas placebo mice suffered from acute enterocolitis at day 6 post-infection, resveratrol treatment did not only lead to improved clinical conditions, but also to less pronounced colonic epithelial apoptosis as compared to placebo application. Furthermore, C. jejuni induced innate and adaptive immune cell responses were dampened in the large intestines upon resveratrol challenge and accompanied by less colonic nitric oxide secretion in the resveratrol versus the placebo cohort. Functional analyses revealed that resveratrol treatment could effectively rescue colonic epithelial barrier function in C. jejuni infected mice. Strikingly, the disease-alleviating effects of resveratrol could additionally be found in extra-intestinal and also systemic compartments at day 6 post-infection. For the first time, our current preclinical intervention study provides evidence that peroral resveratrol treatment exerts potent disease-alleviating effects during acute experimental campylobacteriosis.

Abstract
Due to its health benefits, resveratrol (RE) is one of the most researched natural polyphenols. Resveratrol's health benefits were first highlighted in the early 1990s in the French paradox study, which opened extensive research activity into this compound. Ever since, several pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, anti-diabetic, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective properties, were attributed to RE. However, results from the available human clinical trials were controversial concerning the protective effects of RE against diseases and their sequelae. The reason for these conflicting findings is varied but differences in the characteristics of the enrolled patients, RE doses used, and duration of RE supplementation were proposed, at least in part, as possible causes. In particular, the optimal RE dosage capable of maximizing its health benefits without raising toxicity issues remains an area of extensive research. In this context, while there is a consistent body of literature on the protective effects of RE against diseases, there are relatively few reports investigating its possible toxicity. Indeed, toxicity and adverse effects were reported following consumption of RE; therefore, extensive future studies on the long-term effects, as well as the in vivo adverse effects, of RE supplementation in humans are needed. Furthermore, data on the interactions of RE when combined with other therapies are still lacking, as well as results related to its absorption and bioavailability in the human body. In this review, we collect and summarize the available literature about RE toxicity and side effects. In this process, we analyze in vitro and in vivo studies that have addressed this stilbenoid. These studies suggest that RE still has an unexplored side. Finally, we discuss the new delivery methods that are being employed to overcome the low bioavailability of RE.

Abstract
The objective of present study was to investigate in vitro protective potential of resveratrol in TM3 Leydig cells with induced oxidative stress using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Leydig cells experiencing oxidative stress exhibit reduced activities in androgens production, and become hypofunctional with age, which is also related to growing oxidative stress, while resveratrol has received growing attention as a cytoprotective agent. TM3 mouse Leydig cells were cultivated during 24 h in the presence of resveratrol (5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μM) alone, or in combination with H2O2 (300/600 μM) to induce oxidative stress. Mitochondrial activity was evaluated using MTT test, triple assay was used in order to assess cell viability parameters, intracellular generation of superoxide was determined by the nitroblue-tetrazolium assay, and quantification of steroid hormones was performed by the enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay. Resveratrol alone treatment led to the most significantly improved values of all tested parameters in the cells of experimental group with addition of 10 μM of resveratrol in comparison to the control group. In the case of cells with induced oxidative stress (300 μM H2O2) resveratrol administration resulted in significantly increased (P < 0.05) metabolic activity, as well as cell membrane integrity at concentration 10 μM. Significantly improved (P < 0.001) lysosomal activity showed cells treated with 5 and 10 μM of resveratrol, and the level of both measured hormones was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in cells supplemented with 10 μM of resveratrol. Significant decline of superoxide radical production was observed in all experimental groups in comparison to the control exposed to H2O2 alone. With respect to cells exposed to higher concentration of H2O2 (600 μM), results showed positive effect of resveratrol only in biosynthesis of both androgens with significant increased values in experimental group treated with 5 μM (P < 0.05) and 10 μM (P < 0.01) of resveratrol, in addition, in the case of testosterone we recorded significant higher (P < 0.05) values in cells with addition of 25 and 50 μM resveratrol when compared to H2O2 control. More specific and systematic research focused especially on androgen biosynthesis is necessary related to the biological activity of resveratrol in male reproductive system due to inconsistent results of studies.

Abstract
Many diseases have been regarded to correlate with the in vivo oxidative damages, which are caused by overproduced free radicals from metabolic process or reactive oxygen species (ROS). This background motivates chemists to explore free radical reactions and to design a number of antioxidants, but whether free radical chemistry can be applied to accelerate the efficacy of the drug discovery is still underrepresented. Herein, in light of recent findings as well as kinetics on free radical reaction, the discipline of free radical chemistry is introduced to be a novel tool for finding potential drugs from antioxidant libraries accumulated during the study on free radical chemistry. These antioxidants provide with such abundant types of structural skeleton that might be employed to inhibit oxidations in different biological microenvironments. Although the in vitro characterization on the antioxidative property exerts a potential role of an antioxidant as a prodrug, the in vivo investigation on the property for quenching free radicals will make a final decision for the antioxidant whether it is worthy to be further explored pharmacologically. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that bridging free radical chemistry with the pharmacological research will provide with a succinct way for finding novel drugs efficiently.

Abstract
Resveratrol is commonly found in food and drinks, including red wine and grapes. Grape extracts have a potent antimicrobial activity in vitro. The antimicrobial activity of plant extracts is the base of their potential application in food preservation agents, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, alternative drugs and natural therapies. The aim of our study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of resveratrol and Blue Frankish pomace extract against Grampositive and Gramnegative bacteria as well as yeasts from the genus Candida. Six bacterial strains (three Grampositive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus CCM 2461, Enterococcus faecalis CCM 4224 and Listeria monocytogenes CCM 4699; three Gramnegative bacteria Escherichia coli CCM 3988, Pseudomonas aeruginosa CCM 1959 and Salmonella enteritidis subsp. enteritidis CCM 4420) and three yeast strains (Candida albicans CCM 8186, Candida krusei CCM 8271 and Candida tropicalis CCM 8223) were evaluated using the antimicrobial assay. Pure resveratrol and grape pomace extracts of red variety Blue Frankish were used. Our results show that resveratrol and red grape pomace extract have a very good antimicrobial activity against Grampositive bacteria when compared with Gramnegative bacteria and yeasts.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a polyphenol known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which support its use as a treatment for variety of diseases. There are already known connections of resveratrol to chemoprevention of cancer because of its ability to prevent tumor initiation and inhibit tumor promotion and progression. Resveratrol is also believed to be important in cardiovascular diseases and neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. Using an inverse molecular docking approach, we sought to find new potential targets of resveratrol. Docking of resveratrol into each ProBiS predicted binding site of >38 000 protein structures from the Protein Data Bank was examined, and a number of novel potential targets into which resveratrol was docked successfully were found. These explain known actions or predict new effects of resveratrol. The results included three human proteins that are already known to bind resveratrol. A majority of proteins discovered however have no already described connections with resveratrol. We report new potential target human proteins and proteins connected with different organisms into which resveratrol can dock. Our results reveal previously unknown potential target human proteins, whose connection with cardiovascular and neurological disorders could lead to new potential treatments for variety of diseases. We believe that our research could help in future experimental studies on revestratol bioactivity in humans.

Abstract
Numerous studies have reported a strong association between increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the pathobiology of several diseases, and cancer in particular. Therefore, manipulation of cellular oxidative stress levels represents an important therapeutic target. Recently, resveratrol (RESV), a naturally occurring phytochemical, has been shown to sensitize several cell lines to the anticancer effects of other chemotherapeutic agents, including paclitaxel (PAX). However, the molecular mechanisms of action of RESV through oxidative sensitive TRPM2 channel activation remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of combination therapy of RESV and PAX on activation of TRPM2 in DBTRG glioblastoma cells. DBTRG cells were divided into four treatment groups: control, RESV (50 μM), PAX (50 μM), and PAX + RESV for 24 hours. Our data shows that markers for apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane depolarization and mitochondrial function, intracellular steady-state ROS levels, caspase 3 activity, TRPM2 current density, and Ca2+ florescence intensity were significantly increased in DBTRG cells following treatment with PAX and RESV, respectively, although cell viability was also decreased by these treatments. These biochemical markers were further increased to favor the anticancer effects of PAX in DBTRG cells in combination with RESV. The PAX and RESV-mediated increase in current density and Ca2+ florescence intensity was decreased with a TRPM2 blocker. This suggests that for this combination therapy to have a substantial effect on apoptosis and cell viability, the TRPM2 channel must be stimulated.

Abstract
Resveratrol exhibits various pharmacological activities, which are dependent upon phenolic hydroxyl groups. In this work, glucosamine, lipoic acid, or adamantanamine moiety was applied for attaching to ortho-position of hydroxyl group in resorcinol moiety of resveratrol (known as position-2). Antioxidant effects of the obtained hybrids were characterized using DNA oxidative systems mediated by •OH, Cu2+/glutathione (GSH), and 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropanehydrochloride) (AAPH), respectively. The glucosyl-appended imine and amine at position-2 of resveratrol were found to show higher inhibitory effects than other resveratrol derivatives against AAPH-induced DNA oxidation. The antioxidative effect was quantitatively expressed by stoichiometric factor ( n, the number of radical-propagation terminated by one molecule of antioxidant). The stoichiometric factors of glucosyl-appended imine and amine of resveratrol increased to 4.74 (for imine) and 4.97 (for amine), respectively, higher than that of resveratrol (3.70) and glucoside of resveratrol (3.49). It was thereby concluded that the combination of resveratrol with glucosamine at position-2 represented a novel pathway for modifying resveratrol structure in the protection of DNA against peroxyl radical-mediated oxidation.

Abstract
NAF-1 (nutrient-deprivation autophagy factor-1), which is an outer mitochondrial membrane protein, is known to play important roles in calcium metabolism, antiapoptosis, and antiautophagy. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound, is considered as a potent anticancer agent. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of resveratrol and NAF-1 and their mediation of drug resistance in pancreatic cancer remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that resveratrol suppresses the expression of NAF-1 in pancreatic cancer cells by inducing cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and activating Nrf2 signaling. In addition, the knockdown of NAF-1 activates apoptosis and impedes the proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells. More importantly, the targeting of NAF-1 by resveratrol can improve the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine. These results highlight the significance of strategies that target NAF-1, which may enhance the efficacy of gemcitabine in pancreatic cancer therapy.

Abstract
Background Resveratrol (RSV) has been reported to stimulate osteoblast differentiation in which Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway played a crucial role. However, whether and how RSV activated Wnt/β-catenin pathway in osteogenic differentiation still remained elusive. Methods In vivo polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) particle-induced osteolysis (PIO) mouse model and in vitro PMMA particle-stimulated mouse mesenchymal stem cells (mMSCs) experiments were established. Relative expression levels of lncRNA KCNQ1OT1, β-catenin, Runx2, Osterix and osteocalcin were determined using quantitative Real-Time PCR. Western blotting was used to measure β-catenin protein expression. In addition, the alkaline phosphatase activity and mineral deposition level using alizarin red S staining were performed to examine osteogenic differentiation status. The interaction between KCNQ1OT1 and β-catenin was confirmed by RNA pull down assay. Results RSV significantly attenuated PIO in vivo and PMMA-particle inhibition of osteogenic differentiation of mMSCs. Moreover, KCNQ1OT1 exerted the similar function in mMSCs by regulating β-catenin. Further study demonstrated that RSV exerted its effect on osteoblastic differentiation by regulating KCNQ1OT1. Consequently, RSV alleviated PMMA-particle inhibition of osteoblastic differentiation via Wnt/β-catenin pathway activation in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion RSV accelerated osteoblast differentiation by regulating lncRNA KCNQ1OT1 via Wnt/β-catenin pathway activation, indicating the functional role of RSV in modulating osteogenesis.

Abstract
Bacterial foodborne pathogens are a significant health burden and the recent emergence of pathogenic resistant strains due to the excessive use of antibiotics makes it more difficult to effectively treat infections as a result of contaminated food. Awareness of this impending health crisis has spurred the search for alternative antimicrobials with natural plant antimicrobials being among the more promising candidates as these substances have good acceptability and likely low toxicity levels as they have long been used in traditional medicines. Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene) is a naturally occurring stilbenoid which has been gaining considerable attention in medical field due to its diverse biological activities - it has been reported to exhibit antioxidant, cardioprotective, anti-diabetic, anticancer, and antiaging properties. Given that resveratrol is phytoalexin, with increased synthesis in response to infection by phytopathogens, there has been interest in exploring its antimicrobial activity. This review aims to provide an overview of the published data on the antibacterial activity of resveratrol against foodborne pathogens, its mechanisms of action as well as its possible applications in food packing and processing; in addition we also summarize the current data on its potential synergism with known antibacterials and future research and applications.

Abstract
Some studies have revealed that nicotine can damage the male reproductive system through various means including oxidative stress, which is a primary factor in the pathogenesis of male infertility. The strong anti-oxidative capacity of resveratrol has been demonstrated previously, but its role in the context of male reproduction remains inconclusive. To explore the biological role of resveratrol in protecting male reproductive function and the potential underlying mechanism, nicotine-induced Leydig cells were used as a cell model of oxidative damage. The data showed that resveratrol treatment increased cell viability, SOD activity and anti-apoptotic activity in nicotine-stressed Leydig cells. This effect was accompanied by the upregulation of autophagy, which was illustrated by MDC-LysoTracker red staining. Moreover, pretreating with 3-methyladenine (3-MA), an autophagy inhibitor, attenuated resveratrol-induced Leydig cells autophagy and promoted apoptosis. Apart from this, resveratrol enhanced AMPK phosphorylation but reduced mTOR phosphorylation. Subsequently, upon inhibiting AMPK phosphorylation by AMPK inhibitors, Leydig cell autophagy induced by resveratrol was obviously abolished. In conclusion, resveratrol may exert its cytoprotective role against oxidative injury by the activation of autophagy via AMPK/mTOR pathway.
