Potential of immobilized Chlorella minutissima for the production of biomass, proteins, carotenoids and fatty acids

Enhancing immobilized Chlorella vulgaris growth with novel buoyant barium alginate bubble beads

Microalgae immobilization in alginate beads shows promise for biomass production and water pollution control. However, carrier instability and mass transfer limitations are challenges. This study introduces buoyant barium alginate bubble beads (BABB), which offer exceptional stability and enhance Chlorella vulgaris growth. In just 12 days, compared to traditional calcium alginate beads, BABB achieved a 20 % biomass increase while minimizing cell leakage and simplifying harvesting. BABB optimization involved co-immobilization with BG-11 medium, enrichment of CO2 in internal bubbles, and the integration of Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs). In the open raceway pond reactor, these optimizations resulted in a 39 % increase in biomass over 7 days compared to the unoptimized setup in closed flasks. Furthermore, enhancements in pigment and organic matter production were observed, along with improved removal of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate. These results highlight the overall advantages of BABB for microalgae immobilization, offering a scientific foundation for their effective utilization.

Microbial Pigments: Major Groups and Industrial Applications

Microbial pigments have many structures and functions with excellent characteristics, such as being biodegradable, non-toxic, and ecologically friendly, constituting an important source of pigments. Industrial production presents a bottleneck in production cost that restricts large-scale commercialization. However, microbial pigments are progressively gaining popularity because of their health advantages. The development of metabolic engineering and cost reduction of the bioprocess using industry by-products opened possibilities for cost and quality improvements in all production phases. We are thus addressing several points related to microbial pigments, including the major classes and structures found, the advantages of use, the biotechnological applications in different industrial sectors, their characteristics, and their impacts on the environment and society.

Immobilized microalgal system: An achievable idea for upgrading current microalgal wastewater treatment

Efficient wastewater treatment accompanied by sustainable "nutrients/pollutants waste-wastewater-resources/energy nexus" management is acting as a prominent and urgent global issue since severe pollution has occurred increasingly. Diverting wastes from wastewater into the value-added microalgal-biomass stream is a promising goal using biological wastewater treatment technologies. This review proposed an idea of upgrading the current microalgal wastewater treatment by using immobilized microalgal system. Firstly, a systematic analysis of microalgal immobilization technology is displayed through an in-depth discussion on why using immobilized microalgae for wastewater treatment. Subsequently, the main technical approaches employed for microalgal immobilization and pollutant removal mechanisms by immobilized microalgae are summarized. Furthermore, from high-tech technologies to promote large-scale production and application potentials in diverse wastewater and bioreactors to downstream applications lead upgradation closer, the feasibility of upgrading existing microalgal wastewater treatment into immobilized microalgal systems is thoroughly discussed. Eventually, several research directions are proposed toward the future immobilized microalgal system for microalgal wastewater treatment upgrading. Together, it appears that using immobilization for further upgrading the microalgae-based wastewater treatment can be recognized as an achievable alternative to make microalgal wastewater treatment more realistic. The information and perspectives provided in this review also offer a feasible reference for upgrading conventional microalgae-based wastewater treatment.

Data-driven analysis on immobilized microalgae system: New upgrading trends for microalgal wastewater treatment

Microalgal immobilization is receiving increasing attention as one of the most viable alternatives for upgrading conventional wastewater treatment. However, an in-depth discussion of the state-of-the-art and limitations of available technologies is currently lacking. More importantly, the reason for the hesitant development of immobilized microalgae for wastewater treatment remains unclear, which hinders its practical application. Thus, comprehensively understanding and evaluating details on immobilized microalgae is urgently needed, especially for the current advances of immobilization of microalgae in wastewater treatment over the last few decades. In this review, scientometric approach is used to explore research hotspots and visualize emerging trends. Data-driven analysis is used to scientifically and methodically determine hotspots in the current research on immobilized microalgal wastewater treatment, along with that the implicit inner connection underlying the frequent co-occurring terms was explored in depth. Four hotspots focusing on immobilized microalgae for wastewater treatment were identified, mainly demonstrating: (1) main factors including light, temperature and immobilization methods would majorly affect the treatment performance of immobilized microalgae; (2) immobilized microalgae membrane bioreactor, immobilized microalgae-based microbial fuel cell and immobilized microalgae-based bed reactor are three dominant treatment systems; (3) immobilized microalgae have a higher robustness and tolerance for treating various types of wastewater; and (4) a complete sustainable circle from wastewater treatment to resource conversion via the immobilized microalgae can be achieved. Finally, several new directions and new perspectives that expose the necessity for fulfilling further research and fundamental gaps are pointed out. Taken together, this review provides helpful information to facilitate the development of innovative and feasible immobilized microalgal technologies thus increasing their viability and sustainability.

Total Phenolic Content, Biomass Composition, and Antioxidant Activity of Selected Marine Microalgal Species with Potential as Aquaculture Feed

There has been growing interest in microalgal biomolecules for health and cosmetics, as well as in the use of microalgae as aquaculture feed due to the need to replace fishmeal and fish oil with sustainable yet equally nutritious alternatives. Aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of five marine microalgal species, namely Chlorella minutissima, Dunaliella salina, Isochrysis galbana, Nannochloropsis oculata and Tisochrysis lutea, for the co-production of antioxidants and aquaculture feed. Batch cultivation was performed under saturating light intensity and continuous aeration. Freeze-dried biomass was extracted sequentially with water and methanol and evaluated for phenolic content and antioxidant activity, as well as proximate composition and fatty acid profile. Methanolic extracts of C. minutissima presented the highest phenolic content, measured with the Folin–Ciocalteu assay, and antioxidant activity. However, HPLC and LC-MS showed the presence of non-pigment compounds only in T. lutea. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were correlated to chlorophyll content. N. oculata and T. lutea were rich in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, respectively, as well as in protein. In conclusion, N. oculata and T. lutea are suitable candidates for further optimization, while the data presented suggest that pigment effects on the Folin–Ciocalteu method require reconsideration.

Monitoring Microalgal Growth of Chlorella minutissima with a New All Solid-state Contact Nitrate Selective Sensor

As third generation feedstock, microalgae are microorganisms that can grow only in the optimum conditions. There are parameters including the concentration of macro and microelements in nutrient solution, pH, temperature, and light intensity that have significant impact on microalgal growth. In recent years, various sensing devices has been developed for sensitive measurement of these parameters during microalgal growth. In this study, a new potentiometric nitrate selective sensor was developed to indicate the nitrate uptake of microalgae and the effect of nitrate nutrient on microalgal growth, specifically, and this sensor was successfully applied to determine nitrate concentration in medium during microalgal growth. Moreover, the effects of nitrate, carbonate and phosphate concentration in the growth medium on biomass production of Chlorella minutissima were investigated by using Box-Behnken design method, and optimum conditions were determined for the highest biomass production of microalgae. As a result of the experiments, it was seen that the highest C. minutissima production was achieved using the medium consist of 2.63 g/L NaNO₃ , 0.35 g/L Na₂ CO₃ and 0.4 g/L KH₂ PO_4. Statistically, it was observed that there was a proportional relationship between the microalgae production and investigated parameters such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphate amounts of culture mediums. The electrode showed a wide linear range between 1.0×10^-1 and 5.0×10^-5 M with a detection limit of the 5×10^-6 M and the response time was found as 10 s. The results showed that developed nitrate selective sensor could be successfully applied for continuous measurement of nitrate in microalgal productions at reduced cost.
