An orthobiologics-free strategy for synergistic photocatalytic antibacterial and osseointegration

A Versatile Chitosan-Based Hydrogel Accelerates Infected Wound Healing via Bacterial Elimination, Antioxidation, Immunoregulation, and Angiogenesis

Drug-resistant bacterial infection of cutaneous wounds causes great harm to the human body. These infections are characterized by a microenvironment with recalcitrant bacterial infections, persistent oxidative stress, imbalance of immune regulation, and suboptimal angiogenesis. Treatment strategies available to date are incapable of handling the healing dynamics of infected wounds. A Schiff base and borate ester cross-linked hydrogel, based on phenylboronic acid-grafted chitosan (CS-PBA), dibenzaldehyde-grafted poly(ethylene glycol), and tannic acid (TA), is fabricated in the present study. Customized phenylboronic acid-modified zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) are embedded in the hydrogel prior to gelation. The CPP@ZnO-P-TA hydrogel effectively eliminates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) due to the pH-responsive release of Zn2+ and TA. Killing is achieved via membrane damage, adenosine triphosphate reduction, leakage of intracellular components, and hydrolysis of bacterial o-nitrophenyl-β-d-galactopyranoside. The CPP@ZnO-P-TA hydrogel is capable of scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, alleviating oxidative stress, and stimulating M2 polarization of macrophages. The released Zn2+ and TA also induce neovascularization via the PI3K/Akt pathway. The CPP@ZnO-P-TA hydrogel improves tissue regeneration in vivo by alleviating inflammatory responses, stimulating angiogenesis, and facilitating collagen deposition. These findings suggest that this versatile hydrogel possesses therapeutic potential for the treatment of MRSA-infected cutaneous wounds.

Tuning zinc content in wollastonite bioceramic endowing outstanding angiogenic and antibacterial functions beneficial for orbital reconstruction

Prosthetic eye is indispensable as filler after enucleation in patients with anophthalmia, whereas there are still many complications including postoperative infection and eye socket depression or extrusion during the conventional artificial eye material applications. Some Ca-silicate biomaterials showed superior bioactivity but their biological stability in vivo limit the biomedical application as long-term or permanent implants. Herein we aimed to understand the physicochemical and potential biological responses of zinc doping in wollastonite bioceramic used for orbital implants. The wollastonite powders with different zinc dopant contents (CSi-Znx) could be fabricated as porous implants with strut or curve surface pore geometries (cubic, IWP) via ceramic stereolithography. The experimental results indicated that, by increasing zinc-substituting-Ca ratio (up to 9%), the sintering and mechanical properties could be significantly enhanced, and meanwhile the bio-dissolution in vitro and biodegradability in vivo were thoroughly inhibited. In particular, an appreciable angiogenic activity and expected antibacterial efficacy (over 90 %) were synergistically achieved at 9 mol% Zn dopant. In the back-embedding and enucleation and implantation model experiments in rabbits, the superior continuous angiogenesis was corroborated from the 2D/3D fibrovascular reconstruction in the IWP-pore CSi-Zn9 and CSi-Zn13.5 groups within very short time stages. Totally, the present silicate-based bioceramic via selective Zn doping could produce outstanding structural stability and bifunctional biological responses which is especially valuable for developing the next-generation implants with vascular insertion and fixation in orbital reconstruction prothesis.

Biomaterials science and surface engineering strategies for dental peri-implantitis management

Peri-implantitis is a bacterial infection that causes soft tissue inflammatory lesions and alveolar bone resorption, ultimately resulting in implant failure. Dental implants for clinical use barely have antibacterial properties, and bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on the dental implants are major causes of peri-implantitis. Treatment strategies such as mechanical debridement and antibiotic therapy have been used to remove dental plaque. However, it is particularly important to prevent the occurrence of peri-implantitis rather than treatment. Therefore, the current research spot has focused on improving the antibacterial properties of dental implants, such as the construction of specific micro-nano surface texture, the introduction of diverse functional coatings, or the application of materials with intrinsic antibacterial properties. The aforementioned antibacterial surfaces can be incorporated with bioactive molecules, metallic nanoparticles, or other functional components to further enhance the osteogenic properties and accelerate the healing process. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in biomaterial science and the modification strategies applied to dental implants to inhibit biofilm formation and facilitate bone-implant integration. Furthermore, we summarized the obstacles existing in the process of laboratory research to reach the clinic products, and propose corresponding directions for future developments and research perspectives, so that to provide insights into the rational design and construction of dental implants with the aim to balance antibacterial efficacy, biological safety, and osteogenic property.

Enhanced Bacterial Cuproptosis-Like Death via Reversal of Hypoxia Microenvironment for Biofilm Infection Treatment

A recently emerging cell death pathway, known as copper-induced cell death, has demonstrated significant potential for treating infections. Existing research suggests that cells utilizing aerobic respiration, as opposed to those reliant on glycolysis, exhibit greater sensitivity to copper-induced death. Herein, a MnO2-loaded copper metal-organic frameworks platform is developed denoted as MCM, to enhance bacterial cuproptosis-like death via the remodeling of bacterial respiratory metabolism. The reversal of hypoxic microenvironments induced a cascade of responses, encompassing the reactivation of suppressed immune responses and the promotion of osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Initially, MCM catalyzed O2 production, alleviating hypoxia within the biofilm and inducing a transition in bacterial respiration mode from glycolysis to aerobic respiration. Subsequently, the sensitized bacteria, characterized by enhanced tricarboxylic acid cycle activity, underwent cuproptosis-like death owing to increased copper concentrations and aggregated intracellular dihydrolipoamide S-acetyltransferase (DLAT). The disruption of hypoxia also stimulated suppressed dendritic cells and macrophages, thereby strengthening their antimicrobial activity through chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Moreover, the nutritional effects of copper elements, coupled with hypoxia alleviation, synergistically facilitated the regeneration of bones and blood vessels. Overall, reshaping the infection microenvironment to enhance cuproptosis-like cell death presents a promising avenue for eradicating biofilms.

Advances and Trends of Photoresponsive Hydrogels for Bone Tissue Engineering

The development of static hydrogels as an optimal choice for bone tissue engineering (BTE) remains a difficult challenge primarily due to the intricate nature of bone healing processes, continuous physiological functions, and pathological changes. Hence, there is an urgent need to exploit smart hydrogels with programmable properties that can effectively enhance bone regeneration. Increasing evidence suggests that photoresponsive hydrogels are promising bioscaffolds for BTE due to their advantages such as controlled drug release, cell fate modulation, and the photothermal effect. Here, we review the current advances in photoresponsive hydrogels. The mechanism of photoresponsiveness and its advanced applications in bone repair are also elucidated. Future research would focus on the development of more efficient, safer, and smarter photoresponsive hydrogels for BTE. This review is aimed at offering comprehensive guidance on the trends of photoresponsive hydrogels and shedding light on their potential clinical application in BTE.

Photocatalytic antibacterial agents based on inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials: a review

Microbial contamination and antibiotic pollution have threatened public health and it is important to develop a rapid and safe sterilization strategy. Among various disinfection strategies, photocatalytic antibacterial methods have drawn increasing attention due to their efficient disinfection performances and environment-friendly properties. Although there are some reviews about bacterial disinfection, specific reviews on photocatalysis focused on inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials are rarely reported. Herein, we present a systematic summary of recent disinfection developments based on inorganic nanomaterials (including metal oxides, sulfides, phosphides, carbon materials, and corresponding heterostructures) over the past five years. Moreover, key factors and challenges for inorganic nanomaterial-based photocatalytic disinfection are outlined, which holds great potential for future photocatalytic antibacterial applications.

Traditional Scraping (Gua Sha) Combined with Copper-Curcumin Nanoparticle Oleogel for Accurate and Multi-Effective Therapy of Androgenic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent systemic disease caused by diverse factors, for which effective treatments are currently limited. Herein, the oleogel (OG) containing copper-curcumin (CuR) nanoparticles is developed, designated as CuRG, which is also combined with traditional naturopathic scraping (Gua Sha, SCR) as a multifunctional therapy for AGA. With the assistance of lipophilic OG and SCR, CuR can efficaciously penetrate the epidermal and dermal regions where most hair follicles (HFs) reside, thereby releasing curcumin (CR) and copper ions (Cu2+) subcutaneously to facilitate hair regeneration. Concomitantly, the mechanical stimulation induced by SCR promotes the formation of new blood vessels, which is conducive to reshaping the microenvironment of HFs. This study validates that the combination of CuRG and SCR is capable of systematically interfering with different pathological processes, ranging from improvement of perifollicular microenvironment (oxidative stress and insufficient vascularization), regulation of inflammatory responses to degradation of androgen receptor, thus potentiating hair growth. Compared with minoxidil, a widely used clinical drug for AGA therapy, the designed synergistic system displays augmented hair regeneration in the AGA mouse model.

Smart stimuli-responsive strategies for titanium implant functionalization in bone regeneration and therapeutics

With the increasing and aging of global population, there is a dramatic rise in the demand for implants or substitutes to rehabilitate bone-related disorders which can considerably decrease quality of life and even endanger lives. Though titanium and its alloys have been applied as the mainstream material to fabricate implants for load-bearing bone defect restoration or temporary internal fixation devices for bone fractures, it is far from rare to encounter failed cases in clinical practice, particularly with pathological factors involved. In recent years, smart stimuli-responsive (SSR) strategies have been conducted to functionalize titanium implants to improve bone regeneration in pathological conditions, such as bacterial infection, chronic inflammation, tumor and diabetes mellitus, etc. SSR implants can exert on-demand therapeutic and/or pro-regenerative effects in response to externally applied stimuli (such as photostimulation, magnetic field, electrical and ultrasound stimulation) or internal pathology-related microenvironment changes (such as decreased pH value, specific enzyme secreted by bacterial and excessive production of reactive oxygen species). This review summarizes recent progress on the material design and fabrication, responsive mechanisms, and in vitro and in vivo evaluations for versatile clinical applications of SSR titanium implants. In addition, currently existing limitations and challenges and further prospective directions of these strategies are also discussed.

NIR light-facilitated bone tissue engineering

In the last decades, near-infrared (NIR) light has attracted considerable attention due to its unique properties and numerous potential applications in bioimaging and disease treatment. Bone tissue engineering for bone regeneration with the help of biomaterials is currently an effective means of treating bone defects. As a controlled light source with deeper tissue penetration, NIR light can provide real-time feedback of key information on bone regeneration in vivo utilizing fluorescence imaging and be used for bone disease treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of NIR light-facilitated bone tissue engineering, from the introduction of NIR probes as well as NIR light-responsive materials, and the visualization of bone regeneration to the treatment of bone-related diseases. Furthermore, the existing challenges and future development directions of NIR light-based bone tissue engineering are also discussed. Mild photothermal therapy assist in promoting bone repair: Related mechanism and materials

Achieving precision treatment in bone tissue engineering (BTE) remains a challenge. Photothermal therapy (PTT), as a form of precision therapy, has been extensively investigated for its safety and efficacy. It has demonstrated significant potential in the treatment of orthopedic diseases such as bone tumors, postoperative infections and osteoarthritis. However, the high temperatures associated with PTT can lead to certain limitations and drawbacks. In recent years, researchers have explored the use of biomaterials for mild photothermal therapy (MPT), which offers a promising approach for addressing these limitations. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms underlying MPT and presents a compilation of photothermal agents and their utilization strategies for bone tissue repair. Additionally, the paper discusses the future prospects of MPT-assisted bone tissue regeneration, aiming to provide insights and recommendations for optimizing material design in this field.

Phototherapy techniques for the management of musculoskeletal disorders: strategies and recent advances

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which include a range of pathologies affecting bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, account for a significant portion of the global burden of disease. While pharmaceutical and surgical interventions represent conventional approaches for treating MSDs, their efficacy is constrained and frequently accompanied by adverse reactions. Considering the rising incidence of MSDs, there is an urgent demand for effective treatment modalities to alter the current landscape. Phototherapy, as a controllable and non-invasive technique, has been shown to directly regulate bone, cartilage, and muscle regeneration by modulating cellular behavior. Moreover, phototherapy presents controlled ablation of tumor cells, bacteria, and aberrantly activated inflammatory cells, demonstrating therapeutic potential in conditions such as bone tumors, bone infection, and arthritis. By constructing light-responsive nanosystems, controlled drug delivery can be achieved to enable precise treatment of MSDs. Notably, various phototherapy nanoplatforms with integrated imaging capabilities have been utilized for early diagnosis, guided therapy, and prognostic assessment of MSDs, further improving the management of these disorders. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the strategies and recent advances in the application of phototherapy for the treatment of MSDs, discusses the challenges and prospects of phototherapy, and aims to promote further research and application of phototherapy techniques.

Photothermal therapy of copper incorporated nanomaterials for biomedicine

Studies have reported on the significance of copper incorporated nanomaterials (CINMs) in cancer theranostics and tissue regeneration. Given their unique physicochemical properties and tunable nanostructures, CINMs are used in photothermal therapy (PTT) and photothermal-derived combination therapies. They have the potential to overcome the challenges of unsatisfactory efficacy of conventional therapies in an efficient and non-invasive manner. This review summarizes the recent advances in CINMs-based PTT in biomedicine. First, the classification and structure of CINMs are introduced. CINMs-based PTT combination therapy in tumors and PTT guided by multiple imaging modalities are then reviewed. Various representative designs of CINMs-based PTT in bone, skin and other organs are presented. Furthermore, the biosafety of CINMs is discussed. Finally, this analysis delves into the current challenges that researchers face and offers an optimistic outlook on the prospects of clinical translational research in this field. This review aims at elucidating on the applications of CINMs-based PTT and derived combination therapies in biomedicine to encourage future design and clinical translation.

Photocatalytic Antimicrobials: Principles, Design Strategies, and Applications

Nowadays, the increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms requires the search for alternative methods that do not cause drug resistance. Phototherapy strategies (PTs) based on the photoresponsive materials have become a new trend in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms due to their spatiotemporal controllability and negligible side effects. Among those phototherapy strategies, photocatalytic antimicrobial therapy (PCAT) has emerged as an effective and promising antimicrobial strategy in recent years. In the process of photocatalytic treatment, photocatalytic materials are excited by different wavelengths of lights to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or other toxic species for the killing of various pathogenic microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and algae. Therefore, this review timely summarizes the latest progress in the PCAT field, with emphasis on the development of various photocatalytic antimicrobials (PCAMs), the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms, the design strategies, and the multiple practical antimicrobial applications in local infections therapy, personal protective equipment, water purification, antimicrobial coatings, wound dressings, food safety, antibacterial textiles, and air purification. Meanwhile, we also present the challenges and perspectives of widespread practical implementation of PCAT as antimicrobial therapeutics. We hope that as a result of this review, PCAT will flourish and become an effective weapon against pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic resistance.

Metal ions: the unfading stars of bone regeneration-from bone metabolism regulation to biomaterial applications

In recent years, bone regeneration has emerged as a remarkable field that offers promising guidance for treating bone-related diseases, such as bone defects, bone infections, and osteosarcoma. Among various bone regeneration approaches, the metal ion-based strategy has surfaced as a prospective candidate approach owing to the extensive regulatory role of metal ions in bone metabolism and the diversity of corresponding delivery strategies. Various metal ions can promote bone regeneration through three primary strategies: balancing the effects of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, regulating the immune microenvironment, and promoting bone angiogenesis. In the meantime, the complex molecular mechanisms behind these strategies are being consistently explored. Moreover, the accelerated development of biomaterials broadens the prospect of metal ions applied to bone regeneration. This review highlights the potential of metal ions for bone regeneration and their underlying mechanisms. We propose that future investigations focus on refining the clinical utilization of metal ions using both mechanistic inquiry and materials engineering to bolster the clinical effectiveness of metal ion-based approaches for bone regeneration.

Engineered Bio-Heterojunction with Infection-Primed H2 S Liberation for Boosted Angiogenesis and Infectious Cutaneous Regeneration

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) acts as a powerful weapon against infectious diseases for its enormous antimicrobial activity that quickly elicits storms of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nevertheless, redundant ROS during treatment inevitably bring detriments in revascularization. To address this dilemma, an innovative P-N bio-heterojunction (bio-HJ) material consisting of p-type copper sulfide (p-CuS), n-type bismuth sulfide (n-Bi2 S3 ), and lactate oxidase (LOx) for effective treatment of recalcitrant infectious wounds by promoting angiogenesis is devised. LOx exhausts lactic acid accumulated in infection environment and converts it to hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), which subsequently yields bactericidal hydroxyl radicals (·OH) via Fenton-like reactions. Ultimately, the P-N bio-HJs exert synergistic photothermal, photodynamic, and chemodynamic effects for rapid bacterial annihilation. Moreover, in vitro and RNA-seq analyses reveal that the crafted bio-HJs dramatically expedite the proliferation of L929 cells and promote angiogenesis by up-regulating angiogenic gene expression in hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) signaling pathway, which may ascribe to the evolution of H2 S in response to the infection microenvironment. Critically, results of in vivo experiments have authenticated that the bio-HJs significantly boost healing rates of full-thickness wounds by slaughtering bacteria, elevating angiogenesis, and promoting cytothesis. As envisioned, this work furnishes a novel tactic for the effective treatment of bacteria-invaded wound using H2 S-liberating P-N bio-HJs.

Ag+-Adsorbing Semiconducting Polymer Nanosponge for Smart Local Treatment of Wound Infection

Nanoplatform combined with photothermal therapy (PTT) and silver nanoparticles have been widely used to combat bacterial infections. However, the development of environmentally benign antibacterial nanoplatforms with controllable and long-term antibacterial activity is still challenging. Herein, we synthesized an Ag+-adsorbing organic semiconducting polymeric nanosponge (PDPP3T NPe@Ag+) to realize Ag+ enhanced photothermal anti-infective therapy. Furthermore, the PDPP3T NPe@Ag+ sponge can also spatiotemporally release silver ions in a pH/NIR light-responsive manner for controllable and long-term antimicrobial therapy. Owing to good biocompatibility and controlled release of silver ions, PDPP3T NPe@Ag+ can effectively kill bacteria in vitro and promote wound healing in vivo. We expect that this antimicrobial platform could be utilized as a robust antibacterial agent for infective therapy.

An injectable and thermosensitive hydrogel with nano-aided NIR-II phototherapeutic and chemical effects for periodontal antibacteria and bone regeneration

Periodontitis is a common public health problem worldwide and an inflammatory disease with irregular defect of alveolar bone caused by periodontal pathogens. Both antibacterial therapy and bone regeneration are of great importance in the treatment of periodontitis. In this study, injectable and thermosensitive hydrogels with 3D networks were used as carriers for controlled release of osteo-inductive agent (BMP-2) and Near Infrared Region-II (NIR-II) phototherapy agents (T8IC nano-particles). T8IC nano-particles were prepared by reprecipitation and acted as photosensitizer under 808 nm laser irradiation. Besides, we promoted photodynamic therapy (PDT) through adding H2O2 to facilitate the antibacterial effect instead of increasing the temperature of photothermal therapy (PTT). Hydrogel + T8IC + Laser + BMP-2 + H2O2 incorporated with mild PTT (45 °C), enhanced PDT and sustained release of BMP-2. It was present with excellent bactericidal effect, osteogenic induction and biosafety both in vitro and in vivo. Besides, immunohistochemistry staining and micro-CT analyses had confirmed that PTT and PDT could promote bone regeneration through alleviating inflammation state. Altogether, this novel approach with synergistic antibacterial effect, anti-inflammation and bone regeneration has a great potential for the treatment of periodontitis in the future.

The current status of stimuli-responsive nanotechnologies on orthopedic titanium implant surfaces

With the continuous innovation and breakthrough of nanomedical technology, stimuli-responsive nanotechnology has been gradually applied to the surface modification of titanium implants to achieve brilliant antibacterial activity and promoted osteogenesis. Regarding to the different physiological and pathological microenvironment around implants before and after surgery, these surface nanomodifications are designed to respond to different stimuli and environmental changes in a timely, efficient, and specific way/manner. Here, we focus on the materials related to stimuli-responsive nanotechnology on titanium implant surface modification, including metals and their compounds, polymer materials and other materials. In addition, the mechanism of different response types is introduced according to different activation stimuli, including magnetic, electrical, photic, radio frequency and ultrasonic stimuli, pH and enzymatic stimuli (the internal stimuli). Meanwhile, the associated functions, potential applications and developing prospect were discussion.

Gum Arabic polysaccharide embedded L-cysteine capped copper oxide nanocarriers selectively inhibit fluconazole-resistant C. albicans biofilm and remove the toxic dye from wastewater

Copper oxide nanocarriers have attracted increasing interest in the scientific community, including antimicrobial applications. Candida biofilm developed causes serious clinical problems, leading to drug failure caused by its inherent drug tolerance. Nanocarriers are a good alternative approach to solving this challenge because of their excellent penetration power inside biofilms. Hence, main objectives of this research were to prepare gum arabic-embedded L-cysteine-capped copper oxide nanocarriers (GCCuO NCs) and tested against C. albicans and explore another application. To achieve the main research objectives, GCCuO NCs were synthesized and investigated for antibiofilm potency against C. albicans. Various methods were employed to measure antibiofilm potency such as biofilm assay etc., of NCs. The nano size of GCCuO NCs is advantageous for augmenting penetration power and retention into biofilms. GCCuO NCs at 100 μg/mL exhibited significant antibiofilm activity against the C. albicans DAY185 by switching of yeast-to-hyphae and gene perturbation. The level of CR dye adsorption was 58.96 % using 30 μg/mL of NCs. Based on effective C. albicans biofilm inhibition and CR dye adsorption capacity of NCs, it can be suggested that present research work opens an innovative path to treat biofilm-associated fungal infections, and these NCs can be used for environmental remedies.

PDGFR in PDGF-BB/PDGFR Signaling Pathway Does Orchestrates Osteogenesis in a Temporal Manner

Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB)/platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β (PDGFR-β) pathway is conventionally considered as an important pathway to promote osteogenesis; however, recent study suggested its role during osteogenesis to be controversial. Regarding the differential functions of this pathway during 3 stages of bone healing, we hypothesized that temporal inhibition of PDGF-BB/PDGFR-β pathway could shift the proliferation/differentiation balance of skeletal stem and progenitor cells, toward osteogenic lineage, which leads to improved bone regeneration. We first validated that inhibition of PDGFR-β at late stage of osteogenic induction effectively enhanced differentiation toward osteoblasts. This effect was also replicated in vivo by showing accelerated bone formation when block PDGFR-β pathway at late stage of critical bone defect healing mediated using biomaterials. Further, we found that such PDGFR-β inhibitor-initiated bone healing was also effective in the absence of scaffold implantation when administrated intraperitoneally. Mechanistically, timely inhibition of PDGFR-β blocked extracellular regulated protein kinase 1/2 pathway, which shift proliferation/differentiation balance of skeletal stem and progenitor cell to osteogenic lineage by upregulating osteogenesis-related products of Smad to induce osteogenesis. This study offered updated understanding of the use of PDGFR-β pathway and provides new insight routes of action and novel therapeutic methods in the field of bone repair.

Electro-microenvironment modulated inhibition of endogenous biofilms by piezo implants for ultrasound-localized intestinal perforation disinfection

Endogenous bacterial infections from damaged gastrointestinal (GI) organs have high potential to cause systemic inflammatory responses and life-threatening sepsis. Current treatments, including systemic antibiotic administration and surgical suturing, are difficult in preventing bacterial translocation and further infection. Here, we report a wireless localized stimulator composed of a piezo implant with high piezoelectric output serving as an anti-infective therapy patch, which aims at modulating the electro-microenvironment of biofilm around GI wounds for effective inhibition of bacterial infection if combined with ultrasound (US) treatment from outside the body. The pulsed charges generated by the piezo implant in response to US stimulation transfer into bacterial biofilms, effectively destroying their macromolecular components (e.g., membrane proteins), disrupting the electron transport chain of biofilms, and inhibiting bacterial proliferation, as proven by experimental studies and theoretical calculations. The piezo implant, in combination with US stimulation, also exhibits successful in vivo anti-infection efficacy in a rat cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model. The proposed strategy, combining piezo implants with controllable US activation, creates a promising pathway for inhibiting endogenous bacterial infection caused by GI perforation.

Self-Homeostasis Immunoregulatory Strategy for Implant-Related Infections through Remodeling Redox Balance

Implant-related infections (IRIs) are catastrophic complications after orthopedic surgery. Excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulated in IRIs create a redox-imbalanced microenvironment around the implant, which severely limits the curing of IRIs by inducing biofilm formation and immune disorders. However, current therapeutic strategies commonly eliminate infection utilizing the explosive generation of ROS, which exacerbates the redox imbalance, aggravating immune disorders and promoting infection chronicity. Herein, a self-homeostasis immunoregulatory strategy based on a luteolin (Lut)-loaded copper (Cu²⁺)-doped hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticle system (Lut@Cu-HN) is designed to cure IRIs by remodeling the redox balance. In the acidic infection environment, Lut@Cu-HN is continuously degraded to release Lut and Cu²⁺. As both an antibacterial and immunomodulatory agent, Cu²⁺ kills bacteria directly and promotes macrophage pro-inflammatory phenotype polarization to activate the antibacterial immune response. Simultaneously, Lut scavenges excessive ROS to prevent the Cu²⁺-exacerbated redox imbalance from impairing macrophage activity and function, thus reducing Cu²⁺ immunotoxicity. The synergistic effect of Lut and Cu²⁺ confers excellent antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties to Lut@Cu-HN. As demonstrated in vitro and in vivo, Lut@Cu-HN self-regulates immune homeostasis through redox balance remodeling, ultimately facilitating IRI eradication and tissue regeneration.

Synthesis of Bio-Based Polybenzoxazine and Its Antibiofilm and Anticorrosive Activities

Candida albicans are highly widespread pathogenic fungi in humans. Moreover, its developed biofilm causes serious clinical problems, leading to drug failure caused by its inherent drug tolerance. Hence, the inhibition of biofilm formation and virulence characteristics provide other means of addressing infections. Polymer composites (PCs) derived from natural products have attracted increasing interest in the scientific community, including antimicrobial applications. PCs are a good alternative approach to solving this challenge because of their excellent penetration power inside biofilms. The main objectives of this study were to synthesize a novel curcumin-based polybenzoxazine polymer composite (poly(Cu-A) PC) using Mannich condensation reaction and evaluate their potency as an antibiofilm and anticorrosive candidate against C. albicans. In addition, their anticorrosive efficacy was also explored. PC exhibited significant antibiofilm efficacy versus C. albicans DAY185 by the morphologic changing of yeast to hyphae, and>90% anticorrosive efficacy was observed at a higher dose of PC. These prepared PC were safe in vivo against Caenorhabditis elegans and Raphanus raphanistrum. The study shows that a polybenzoxazine polymer composite has the potential for controlling biofilm-associated fungal infections and virulence by C. albicans, and opens a new avenue for designing PCs as antifungal, anticorrosive agents for biofilm-associated fungal infections and industrial remediation.

Structural optimization of BODIPY photosensitizers for enhanced photodynamic antibacterial activities

Enhancing the interactions between photosensitizers and bacteria is key to developing effective photodynamic antibacterial agents. However, the influence of different structures on the therapeutic effects has not been systematically investigated. Herein, 4 BODIPYs with distinct functional groups, including the phenylboronic acid (PBA) group and pyridine (Py) cations, were designed to explore their photodynamic antibacterial activities. The BODIPY with the PBA group (IBDPPe-PBA) exhibits potent activity against planktonic Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) upon illumination, while the BODIPY with Py cations (IBDPPy-Ph) or both the PBA group and Py cations (IBDPPy-PBA) can significantly minimize the growth of both S. aureus and Escherichia coli (E. coli). In particular, IBDPPy-Ph can not only eliminate the mature S. aureus biofilm and E. coli biofilm in vitro, but also promote the healing of the infected wound. Our work provides an alternative for reasonable design of photodynamic antibacterial materials.

A Janus Au-Polymersome Heterostructure with Near-Field Enhancement Effect for Implant-Associated Infection Phototherapy

Polymer-inorganic hybrid Janus nanoparticles (PI-JNPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their special structures and functions. However, achieving the synergistic enhancement of photochemical activity between polymer and inorganic moieties in PI-JNPs remains challenging. Herein, the construction of a novel Janus Au-porphyrin polymersome (J-AuPPS) heterostructure by a facile one-step photocatalytic synthesis is reported. The near-field enhancement (NFE) effect between porphyrin polymersome (PPS) and Au nanoparticles in J-AuPPS is achieved to enhance its near-infrared (NIR) light absorption and electric/thermal field intensity at their interface, which improves the energy transfer and energetic charge-carrier generation. Therefore, J-AuPPS shows a higher NIR-activated photothermal conversion efficiency (48.4%) and generates more singlet oxygen compared with non-Janus core-particle Au-PPS nanostructure (28.4%). As a result, J-AuPPS exhibits excellent dual-mode (photothermal/photodynamic) antibacterial and anti-biofilm performance, thereby significantly enhancing the in vivo therapeutic effect in an implant-associated-infection rat model. This work is believed to motivate the rational design of advanced hybrid JNPs with desirable NFE effect and further extend their biological applications.

Reversing the imbalance in bone homeostasis via sustained release of SIRT-1 agonist to promote bone healing under osteoporotic condition

The imbalance of bone homeostasis is the root cause of osteoporosis. However current therapeutic approaches mainly focus on either anabolic or catabolic pathways, which often fail to turn the imbalanced bone metabolism around. Herein we reported that a SIRT-1 agonist mediated molecular therapeutic strategy to reverse the imbalance in bone homeostasis by simultaneously regulating osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis via locally sustained release of SRT2104 from mineral coated acellular matrix microparticles. Immobilization of SRT2104 on mineral coating (MAM/SRT) harnessing their electrostatic interactions resulted in sustained release of SIRT-1 agonist for over 30 days. MAM/SRT not only enhanced osteogenic differentiation and mineralization, but also attenuated the formation and function of excessive osteoclasts via integrating multiple vital upstream signals (β-catenin, FoxOs, Runx2, NFATc1, etc.) in vitro. Osteoporosis animal model also validated that it accelerated osteoporotic bone healing and improved osseointegration of the surrounding bone. Overall, our work proposes a promising strategy to treat osteoporotic bone defects by reversing the imbalance in bone homeostasis using designated small molecule drug delivery systems.

A drug delivery system constructed by a fusion peptide capturing exosomes targets to titanium implants accurately resulting the enhancement of osseointegration peri-implant

BACKGROUND

Exosomes derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC-exos) have been shown triggering osteogenic differentiation and mineralization of MSCs, but exosomes administered via bolus injections are rapidly sequestered and cleared. Therefore, we considered the implant as a new organ of patient's body and expected to find a method to treat implant with BMSC-exos in vivo directly.

METHODS

A fusion peptide (PEP), as a drug delivery system (DDS) which contained a titanium-binding peptide (TBP) possessing the ability to selectively bind to the titanium surface and another peptide CP05 being able to capture exosomes expertly, is constructed to modify the titanium surface.

RESULTS

Both in vitro and in vivo experiments prove PEP retains the ability to bind titanium and exosome simultaneously, and the DDS gain the ability to target exosomes to titanium implants surface following enhancing osseointegration post-implantation. Moreover, the DDS constructed by exosomes of diverse origins shows the similar combination rate and efficiency of therapy.

CONCLUSION

This drug delivery system demonstrates the concept that EXO-PEP system can offer an accurate and efficient therapy for treating implants with long-term effect.

Stimuli-Activable Metal-Bearing Nanomaterials and Precise On-Demand Antibacterial Strategies

Bacterial infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide today. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has urged the development of alternative antibacterial technologies to complement or replace traditional antibiotic treatments. In this regard, metal nanomaterials have attracted great attention for their controllable antibacterial functions that are less prone to resistance. This review discusses a particular family of stimuli-activable metal-bearing nanomaterials (denoted as SAMNs) and the associated on-demand antibacterial strategies. The various SAMN-enabled antibacterial strategies stem from basic light and magnet activation, with the addition of bacterial microenvironment responsiveness and/or bacteria-targeting selectivity and therefore offer higher spatiotemporal controllability. The discussion focuses on nanomaterial design principles, antibacterial mechanisms, and antibacterial performance, as well as emerging applications that desire on-demand and selective activation (i.e., medical antibacterial treatments, surface anti-biofilm, water disinfection, and wearable antibacterial materials). The review concludes with the authors' perspectives on the challenges and future directions for developing industrial translatable next-generation antibacterial strategies.

In Vitro Degradation and Photoactivated Antibacterial Activity of a Hemin-CaP Microsphere-Loaded Coating on Pure Magnesium

Photoactivated sterilization has received more attention in dealing with implant-associated infections due to its advantages of rapid and effective bacteriostasis and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Herein, a micro-arc oxidation (MAO)/polymethyltrimethoxysilane (PMTMS)@hemin-induced calcium-bearing phosphate microsphere (Hemin-CaP) coating was prepared on pure magnesium (Mg) via MAO processing and dipping treatments. The morphology and composition of the coating were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. Corrosion behavior was evaluated through electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests. The release of Fe³⁺ ions at different immersion times was measured with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Antibacterial performance and cytotoxicity were assessed using the spread plate method, MTT assay and live/dead staining experiment. The results showed that the corrosion current density of the MAO/PMTMS@(Hemin-CaP) coating (4.41 × 10^-8 A·cm^-2) was decreased by two orders of magnitude compared to that of pure Mg (3.12 × 10^-6 A·cm^-2). Photoactivated antibacterial efficiencies of the Hemin-CaP microspheres and MAO/PMTMS@(Hemin-CaP) coating reached about 99% and 92%, respectively, which we attributed to the photothermal and photodynamic properties of hemin with a porphyrin ring. Moreover, based on the release of Fe³⁺ ions, the MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts' viability reached up to 125% after a 72 h culture, indicating a positive effect of the coating in promoting cell growth. Thus, this novel composite coating holds a promising application as bone implants.

Bioceramic-based scaffolds with antibacterial function for bone tissue engineering: A review

Bone defects caused by trauma, tumor, congenital abnormality and osteoarthritis, etc. have been substantially impacted the lives and health of human. Artificial bone implants, like bioceramic-based scaffolds, provide significant benefits over biological counterparts and are critical for bone repair and regeneration. However, it is highly probable that bacterial infections occur in the surgical procedures or on bioceramic-based scaffolds. Therefore, it is of great significance to obtain bioceramic-based scaffolds with integrative antibacterial and osteogenic functions for treating bone implant-associated infection and promoting bone repair. To fight against infection problems, bioceramic-based scaffolds with various antibacterial strategies are developed for bone repair and regeneration and also have made great progresses. This review summarizes recent progresses in bioceramic-based scaffolds with antibacterial function, which include drug-induced, ion-mediated, physical-activated and their combined antibacterial strategies according to specific antibacterial mechanism. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of antibacterial bioceramic-based scaffolds are discussed.

Bioheterojunction-Engineered Polyetheretherketone Implants With Diabetic Infectious Micromilieu Twin-Engine Powered Disinfection for Boosted Osteogenicity

Diabetic infectious micromilieu (DIM) leads to a critical failure rate of osseointegration by virtue of two main peculiarities: high levels of topical glucose and inevitable infection. To tackle the daunting issue, a bioheterojunction-engineered orthopedic polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implant consisting of copper sulfide/graphene oxide (CuS/GO) bioheterojunctions (bioHJs) and glucose oxidase (GOx) is conceived and developed for DIM enhanced disinfection and boosted osseointegration. Under hyperglycemic micromilieu, GOx can convert surrounding glucose into hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ). Then, upon infectious micromilieu, the bioHJs enable the catalyzation of H₂ O₂ to highly germicidal hydroxyl radical (·OH). As a result, the engineered implants massacre pathogenic bacteria through DIM twin-engine powered photo-chemodynamic therapy in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the engineered implants considerably facilitate cell viability and osteogenic activity of osteoblasts under a hyperglycemic microenvironment via synergistic induction of copper ions (Cu²⁺ ) and GO. In vivo studies using bone defect models of diabetic rats at 4 and 8 weeks further authenticate that bioHJ-engineering PEEK implants substantially elevate their osseointegration through biofilm elimination and vascularization, as well as macrophage reprogramming. Altogether, the present study puts forward a tactic that arms orthopedic implants with DIM twin-engine powered antibacterial and formidable osteogenic capacities for diabetic stalled osseointegration.

Biomimic Trained Immunity-MSCs Delivery Microcarriers for Acute Liver Failure Regeneration

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have a demonstrated value for acute liver failure (ALF) regeneration, while their delivery stratagems with long-term biological functions, low immune response, and high biocompatibility are still a challenge. Here, a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-loaded photoresponsive cryogel porous microcarrier (CPM) for MSCs delivery and colonization is presented to promote defect liver regeneration. The CPMs are fabricated with graphene oxide, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) via droplet microfluidic technology and a gradient-cooling procedure. Benefitting from the biocompatible GelMA component and the porous microstructure of the CPMs, MSCs can be nondestructively captured and abundantly delivered. Because the LPS can be released from the CPMs under NIR irradiation, the delivered MSCs are imparted with the feature of "trained immunity." Thus, when the MSCs-laden CPMs are tailored into the liver matched patches by bioprinting and applied in ALF rats, they display superior anti-inflammatory and more significant liver regeneration properties than the untrained MSCs. These features make the CPMs an excellent MSCs delivery system for clinical applications in tissue repair.

Copper-containing nanoparticles: Mechanism of antimicrobial effect and application in dentistry-a narrative review

Copper has been used as an antimicrobial agent long time ago. Nowadays, copper-containing nanoparticles (NPs) with antimicrobial properties have been widely used in all aspects of our daily life. Copper-containing NPs may also be incorporated or coated on the surface of dental materials to inhibit oral pathogenic microorganisms. This review aims to detail copper-containing NPs' antimicrobial mechanism, cytotoxic effect and their application in dentistry.

Rapid sterilisation and diabetic cutaneous regeneration using cascade bio-heterojunctions through glucose oxidase-primed therapy

The cutaneous wound in diabetic patients frequently encounters intractable pathogenic infections due to the hyperglycemia micromilieu which is conducive to bacterial growth and multiplication. Despite the extensive clinical use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections, the emergence of drug-resistant and super pathogens as well as the potential side effects of antibiotics have elicited alarming challenges to public health. To address this daunting concern, we devise and develop a photo-activated cascade bio-heterojunctions (C-bio-HJs) for rapid sterilization and diabetic cutaneous regeneration. In the designed C-bio-HJs, photo-generated electron-hole pairs of graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) are effectively separated with the marriage of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), which achieves the augmented photodynamic antibacterial effect. Moreover, glucose oxidase (GOx) tethered on the bio-HJs catalyzes glucose into hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in diabetic wounds for starvation therapy. Furthermore, Mo⁴⁺ enables the catalysis of H₂O₂ into a highly effective hydroxyl radical (·OH) for chemodynamic-photothermal combined antibacterial therapy. Both in vitro and in vivo results authenticate the cascading antibacterial properties and skin regeneration-promoting effects of the C-bio-HJs, which provide a facile strategy to combat diabetic wound healing through the synergistic GOx-primed dynamic therapies.

Graphene oxide/gallium nanoderivative as a multifunctional modulator of osteoblastogenesis and osteoclastogenesis for the synergistic therapy of implant-related bone infection

Currently, implant-associated bacterial infections account for most hospital-acquired infections in patients suffering from bone fractures or defects. Poor osseointegration and aggravated osteolysis remain great challenges for the success of implants in infectious scenarios. Consequently, developing an effective surface modification strategy for implants is urgently needed. Here, a novel nanoplatform (GO/Ga) consisting of graphene oxide (GO) and gallium nanoparticles (GaNPs) was reported, followed by investigations of its in vitro antibacterial activity and potential bacterium inactivation mechanisms, cytocompatibility and regulatory actions on osteoblastogenesis and osteoclastogenesis. In addition, the possible molecular mechanisms underlying the regulatory effects of GO/Ga nanocomposites on osteoblast differentiation and osteoclast formation were clarified. Moreover, an in vivo infectious microenvironment was established in a rat model of implant-related femoral osteomyelitis to determine the therapeutic efficacy and biosafety of GO/Ga nanocomposites. Our results indicate that GO/Ga nanocomposites with excellent antibacterial potency have evident osteogenic potential and inhibitory effects on osteoclast differentiation by modulating the BMP/Smad, MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways. The in vivo experiments revealed that the administration of GO/Ga nanocomposites significantly inhibited bone infections, reduced osteolysis, promoted osseointegration located in implant-bone interfaces, and resulted in satisfactory biocompatibility. In summary, this synergistic therapeutic system could accelerate the bone healing process in implant-associated infections and can significantly guide the future surface modification of implants used in bacteria-infected environments.

Construction of D-A-Conjugated Covalent Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Photodynamic, Photothermal, and Nanozymatic Activities for Efficient Bacterial Inhibition

Bacterial infection causes serious threats to human life, especially with the appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Phototherapeutic approaches have become promising due to their noninvasiveness, few adverse effects, and high efficiency. Herein, a covalent organic framework (TAPP-BDP) with a conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) structure has been constructed for efficient photoinduced bacteriostasis. Under the irradiation with a single near-infrared (NIR) light (λ = 808 nm), TAPP-BDP alone involves triple and synergistic bacterial inhibition based on the integration of photodynamic, photothermal, and peroxidase-like enzymatic activities. The unique D-A structure endows TAPP-BDP with a narrow energy band gap, improving its photodynamic and nanozyme activities to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to realize the broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. The extended π-conjugated skeleton of TAPP-BDP results in enhanced absorption in NIR, and the remarkable photothermal activity can increase the temperature up to 65 °C to cause efficient bacterial degeneration. TAPP-BDP shows excellent antibacterial efficiency against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Animal experiments further suggest that TAPP-BDP can effectively heal wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus in living systems.

Antibacterial Designs for Implantable Medical Devices: Evolutions and Challenges

The uses of implantable medical devices are safer and more common since sterilization methods and techniques were established a century ago; however, device-associated infections (DAIs) are still frequent and becoming a leading complication as the number of medical device implantations keeps increasing. This urges the world to develop instructive prevention and treatment strategies for DAIs, boosting the studies on the design of antibacterial surfaces. Every year, studies associated with DAIs yield thousands of publications, which here are categorized into four groups, i.e., antibacterial surfaces with long-term efficacy, cell-selective capability, tailored responsiveness, and immune-instructive actions. These innovations are promising in advancing the solution to DAIs; whereas most of these are normally quite preliminary “proof of concept” studies lacking exact clinical scopes. To help identify the flaws of our current antibacterial designs, clinical features of DAIs are highlighted. These include unpredictable onset, site-specific incidence, and possibly involving multiple and resistant pathogenic strains. The key point we delivered is antibacterial designs should meet the specific requirements of the primary functions defined by the “intended use” of an implantable medical device. This review intends to help comprehend the complex relationship between the device, pathogens, and the host, and figure out future directions for improving the quality of antibacterial designs and promoting clinical translations.

Surface Modification of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone with MXene Nanosheets for Enhanced Photothermal Antibacterial Activity and Osteogenicity

Ideal bone implant materials need to provide multiple functions such as biocompatibility, non-cytotoxicity, and bone tissue regeneration guidance. To tackle this challenge, according to our previous work, carbon fiber (40 mm)-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFPEEK) composites were developed by using 3D needle-punched CFPEEK preform molding technology. Because of the excellent mechanical properties, the CFPEEK needled felt matrix composites have a broad application prospect in orthopedic internal fixation and implant materials. In order to expand the application range of composite materials, it is very necessary to improve the surface bioactivity of composite materials. The surface modification of CFPEEK with 2D titanium carbide (MXene) nanosheets (sulfonated CFPEEK (SCFPEEK)-polydopamine (PDA)-Ti₃C₂T_x) for enhanced photothermal antibacterial activity and osteogenicity was explored in this study. Here, the new composites we constructed are composed of Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheets, PDA, and biologically inert SCFPEEK, which gave the bio-inert composites bimodal therapeutic features: photothermal antibacterial activity and in vivo osseointegration. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a CFPEEK implant with a bioactive surface modified by Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheets was demonstrated. Due to the synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT) treatment of Ti₃C₂T_x/PDA, SCFPEEK-PDA-Ti₃C₂T_x (SCP-PDA-Ti) absorbed heat and the temperature increased to 40.8-59.6 °C─the high temperature led to bacterial apoptosis. The SCP-PDA-Ti materials could effectively kill bacteria after 10 min of near-infrared (NIR) irradiation at 808 nm. SCP-PDA-Ti (2.5) and SCP-PDA-Ti (3.0) achieved a 100% bacteriostasis rate. More importantly, the multifunctional implant SCP-PDA-Ti shows good cytocompatibility and an excellent ability to promote bone formation in terms of cytotoxicity, diffusion, alkaline phosphatase activity, alizarin red activity, real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis, and in vivo bone defect osteogenesis experiments. This provides a more extendable development idea for the application of carbon fiber-reinforced composites as orthopedic implants.

Development of Graphene-Based Materials in Bone Tissue Engineaering

Bone regeneration-related graphene-based materials (bGBMs) are increasingly attracting attention in tissue engineering due to their special physical and chemical properties. The purpose of this review is to quantitatively analyze mass academic literature in the field of bGBMs through scientometrics software CiteSpace, to demonstrate the rules and trends of bGBMs, thus to analyze and summarize the mechanisms behind the rules, and to provide clues for future research. First, the research status, hotspots, and frontiers of bGBMs are analyzed in an intuitively and vividly visualized way. Next, the extracted important subjects such as fabrication techniques, cytotoxicity, biodegradability, and osteoinductivity of bGBMs are presented, and the different mechanisms, in turn, are also discussed. Finally, photothermal therapy, which is considered an emerging area of application of bGBMs, is also presented. Based on this approach, this work finds that different studies report differing opinions on the biological properties of bGBMS due to the lack of consistency of GBMs preparation. Therefore, it is necessary to establish more standards in fabrication, characterization, and testing for bGBMs to further promote scientific progress and clinical translation.

Fabrication of a Lignin-Copper Sulfide-Incorporated PVA Hydrogel with Near-Infrared-Activated Photothermal/Photodynamic/Peroxidase-like Performance for Combating Bacteria and Biofilms

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria and biofilms are among the most difficult challenges in infection treatment. Herein, lignin-copper sulfide (LS-CuS) nanocomposites were incorporated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to fabricate a LS-CuS@PVA composite hydrogel with near-infrared-activated photothermal, photodynamic, and peroxidase-like performance. The antibacterial tests of LS-CuS@PVA exhibited the highest antibacterial rate that caused 3.8-log and 4.8-log reductions of colony forming units (CFUs) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of H₂O₂ under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation for 10 min. The significantly improved bactericidal performance could be attributed to the synergistic effects of hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, the LS-CuS@PVA hydrogel could eradicate the already formed biofilm and inhibit biofilm formation. Considering the highly effective antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the LS-CuS@PVA hydrogel, this work could provide new insights for the design of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based composite hydrogels for wound healing and wound dressing.
