Abstract
Cellulose degrading bacterial diversity of Bhitarkanika mangrove ecosystem, India, was uncovered and the cellulose degradation mechanism in Bacillus haynesii DS7010 under the modifiers such as pH (pCO2), salinity and lead (Pb) was elucidated in the present study. The abundance of cellulose degrading heterotrophic bacteria was found to be higher in mangrove sediment than in water. The most potential strain, B. haynesii DS7010 showed the presence of endoglucanase, exoglucanase and β-glucosidase with the maximum degradation recorded at 48 h of incubation, with 1% substrate concentration at 41 °C incubation temperature. Two glycoside hydrolase genes, celA and celB were confirmed in this bacterium. 3D structure prediction of the translated CelA and CelB proteins showed maximum similarities with glycoside hydrolase 48 (GH48) and glycoside hydrolase 5 (GH5) respectively. Native PAGE followed by zymogram assay unveiled the presence of eight isoforms of cellulase ranged from 78 kDa to 245 kDa. Among the stressors, most adverse effect was observed under Pb stress at 1400 ppm concentration, followed by pH at pH 4. This was indicated by prolonged lag phase growth, higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, lower enzyme activity and downregulation of celA and celB gene expressions. Salinity augmented bacterial metabolism up to 3% NaCl concentration. Mangrove leaf litter degradation by B. haynesii DS7010 indicated a substantial reduction in cellulolytic potential of the bacterium in response to the synergistic effect of the stressors. Microcosm set up with the stressors exhibited 0.97% decrease in total carbon (C%) and 0.02% increase in total nitrogen (N%) after 35 d of degradation while under natural conditions, the reduction in C and the increase in N were 4.05% and 0.2%, respectively. The findings of the study suggest the cellulose degradation mechanism of a mangrove bacterium and its resilience to the future consequences of environmental pollution and climate change.

Abstract
To reduce the adverse physical effects on the oral mucosa caused by excessive hardness of betel nut fibers, steam explosion was used to soften betel nuts. The effect of three operating parameters (pressure holding time, explosion pressure, and initial moisture content) on the morphology, texture, and chemical composition of the betel nuts was investigated. The fiber hardness and Shore hardness decreased by 56.17%-89.28% and 7.03%-34.29%, respectively, and the transverse tensile strength and fiber tensile strength also decreased by up to 60.72% and 24.62%, respectively. Moreover, the coefficient of static friction and moisture content increased. After steam explosion, the betel nut increased in transverse diameter, became darker and more yellow-red in color, and showed a damaged microstructure. The contents of free phenol and alkaloids decreased after steam explosion treatment, with free phenols and total alkaloids decreasing from 34.32 mg(GAE)/g and 7.84 mg/g to 21.58 mg(GAE)/g and 6.50 mg/g, respectively, after the A-50 s treatment condition. The steam explosion increased the quantity of phenols, alkaloids, and soluble solids released from the betel nut under the same simulated release conditions of the texture analyzer. The research also showed that increased pressure holding time and explosion pressure enhanced the explosion efficiency, while the initial moisture content was reduced the explosion efficiency. Therefore, steam explosion is an effective pretreatment approach to soften betel nut and facilitate healthy development of the betel nut industry.

Abstract
Steam explosion coupling high-temperature short-time sterilization (SE-HTST) was exploited to modify cellulosic biomass medium properties and promote high-solid fermentation (HSF). Biomass characterization analysis showed that SE-HTST enlarged microstructural pores and cavities in solid media, providing more effective space for microbial growth. Meanwhile, SE-HTST helped to release glucose from the cellulose with 35.8 ± 4.5, 20.0 ± 2.3, and 12.3 ± 5.7 mg glucose/g dry medium at 24, 48, and 72 h of fermentation, which were 3.1, 2.3, and 1.5 times higher than that in medium from conventional thermal sterilization (CTS), respectively. SE-HTST increased the viable cell and spore number of Bacillus subtilis by 1.8 and 1.6 times at 72 h of fermentation compared to CTS. Moreover, the expressions of master transcriptional gene spo0A and the early sigma factors of sigF and sigE genes gradually increased in the SE-HTST medium, showing enhanced sporulation in HSF. Therefore, SE-HTST is an effective strategy for facilitating cellulose degradation, improving glucose nutrients in biomass medium, and promoting sporulation-regulatory gene expression during high-solid fermentation, which enhances the production of microbial ecological agents using B. subtilis significantly.

Abstract
IntroductionThe purpose of this research was to investigate how dietary supplementation with fermented herbal residues (FCMR) affected birds' development capacity, quality of meat, gut barrier, and cecum microbiota.Methods540 cyan-shank partridge birds aged 47 days were chosen and divided into two groups of six replicates each and 45 birds for each replicate. The control group (CON) received a basal diet, while the trial group decreased a basic diet containing 5% FCMR.Results and discussionThe findings revealed that the addition of FCMR decreased FCR and increased ADG in broilers (P < 0.05). Adding FCMR increased steaming loss in broiler chicken breasts (p < 0.05). Supplementation with FCMR significantly enhanced VH/CD and VH in the bird's intestine (jejunum, duodenum, and ileum) (p < 0.05). In addition, the addition of FCMR significantly down-regulated mRNA expression of INF-γ, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α and up-regulated mRNA expression of ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin (P < 0.05). Microbial 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing study revealed that supplements with FCMR modified the cecum microbiota, and α-diversity analysis showed that supplementation with FCMR reduced the cecum bacterial abundance in broilers (P < 0.05). At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Spirochaetota increased considerably following FCMR supplementation (P < 0.05). The broiler cecum's close lot of Prevotellaceae_UCG-001 (P < 0.05), Desulfovibrio, Muribaculaceae, and Fusobacterium (p < 0.05) reduced when FCMR was supplemented. Supplementation with FCMR can promote growth capacity and maintain intestinal health in birds by enhancing gut barrier function and modulating the inflammatory response and microbial composition.

Abstract
To investigate the feasibility of steam explosion on the exploitation of ruminant feedstuff, the morphological structure, carbohydrate-protein fractions, and rumen fermentation profile of five typical crop byproducts (corn cob, rice straw, peanut shell, millet stalk, and sugarcane tip) were analyzed before and after steam explosion processing. The results showed that these crop byproducts had different physicochemical properties and rumen fermentation profiles, most of which could be improved by steam explosion processing, i.e., more rough morphological surface, much-broken structure, more digestible carbohydrate fraction (non-NDF +49.92–452.24%), faster gas production rate (c +9.72–68.75%), higher dry matter digestibility (DMD48 +11.38–47.36%), more available energy (ME −3.69–+42.13%, except for peanut shell), along with more unavailable protein fraction (ADICP +27.16–102.70%). It is suggested that steam explosion processing could intensify the feeding value of most crop byproducts for ruminants, but with a caution of heat damage to proteins.

Abstract
The impetus to predicting future biomass consumption focuses on sustainable energy, which concerns the non-renewable nature of fossil fuels and the environmental challenges associated with fossil fuel burning. However, the production of rice residue in the form of rice husk (RH) and rice straw (RS) has brought an array of benefits, including its utilization as biofuel to augment or replace fossil fuel. Rice residue characterization, valorization, and techno-economic analysis require a comprehensive review to maximize its inherent energy conversion potential. Therefore, the focus of this review is on the assessment of rice residue characterization, valorization approaches, pre-treatment limitations, and techno-economic analyses that yield a better biofuel to adapt to current and future energy demand. The pre-treatment methods are also discussed through torrefaction, briquetting, pelletization and hydrothermal carbonization. The review also covers the limitations of rice residue utilization, as well as the phase structure of thermochemical and biochemical processes. The paper concludes that rice residue is a preferable sustainable biomass option for both economic and environmental growth.

Abstract
To improve the utilization efficiency of corn stover , steam explosion pretreatment and cellulase/lactic acid bacteria-assisted ensilage storage were conducted in sequence, mainly focusing on morphological structure, lignocellulose fraction, cellulose accessibility and degradation profile. The results showed that there was a synergistic effect of steam explosion and ensilage storage, where hemicellulose of corn stover was partly degraded during steam explosion processing (70%) or ensilage storage (20-40%). Meanwhile, its morphological structure was apparently broken, increasing cellulose accessibility (2.44, 2.83, 4.08-4.33 mg/g), where enzyme YDL and inoculant QZB were the two most effective additives. Furthermore, rumen effective degradability of corn stover (39.25%, 48.33%, 52.57-54.07%) were increased along with greater rapid degradation fraction (0, 1.67%, 9.16-11.62%) and degradation rate of slow degradation fraction (0.020, 0.034, 0.039-0.048 h-1) . In conclusions, it is suggested that treating corn stover with steam explosion processing and ensilage storage is a feasible way to improve its utilization efficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to explore the effects of maize straw treated with calcium oxide (CaO) and various moisture, on the composition and molecular structure of the fiber, and gas production by fermentation in an in vitro rumen environment. METHODS The experiment used 4×3 Factorial treatment. Maize straws were treated with 4 concentrations of CaO (0%, 3%, 5%, and 7% of dry straw weight) and 3 moisture contents (40%, 50%, and 60%). Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy were employed to measure the surface texture, secondary molecular structure of carbohydrate, and calcium (Ca) content of the maize straw, respectively. The correlation of secondary molecular structures and fiber components of maize straw were analyzed by CORR procedure of SAS 9.2. In vitro rumen fermentation was performed for 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h to measure gas production. RESULTS Overall, the moisture factor had no obvious effect on the experimental results. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose contents decreased (p<0.05) with increasing concentrations of CaO treatment. Surface and secondary molecular structure of maize straw were affected by various CaO and moisture treatments. NDF had positive correlation (p<0.01) with Cell-H (H, height), Cell-A (A, area), CHO-2-H. Hemicellulose had positive correlation (p<0.01) with Lignin-H, Lignin-A, Cell-H, Cell-A. Ca content of maize straw increased as the concentration of CaO was increased (p<0.01). Gas production was highest in the group treated with 7% CaO. CONCLUSION CaO can adhere to the surface of the maize straw, and then improve the digestibility of the maize straw in ruminants by modifying the structure of lignocellulose and facilitating the maize straw for microbial degradation.

Abstract
Objective The present study was conducted to examine the gas production, fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and methanogenic community composition of a rumen fluid culture with Broussonetia papyrifera (B. papyrifera) subjected to ensiling or steam explosion (SE) pretreatment. Methods Fresh B. papyrifera was collected and pretreated by ensiling or SE, which was then fermented with ruminal fluids as ensiled B. papyrifera group, steam-exploded B. papyrifera group, and untreated B. papyrifera group. The gas and methane production, fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and methanogenic community were determined during the fermentation. Results Cumulative methane production was significantly improved with SE pretreatment compared with ensiled or untreated biomass accompanied with more volatile fatty acids production. After 72 h incubation, SE and ensiling pretreatments decreased the acid detergent fiber contents by 39.4% and 22.9%, and neutral detergent fiber contents by 10.6% and 47.2%, respectively. Changes of methanogenic diversity and abundance of methanogenic archaea corresponded to the variations in fermentation pattern and methane production. Conclusion Compared with ensiling pretreatment, SE can be a promising technique for the efficient utilization of B. papyrifera, which would contribute to sustainable livestock production systems.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass can be considered as one of the largest sources for the production of renewable biofuels (bioethanol). It involves an enzymatic treatment capable of ensuring the depolymerization of cellulose into fermentable sugars, followed by the production of ethanol by appropriate bacteriological fermentation. Proper destruction of the compact natural structure of the biomass would allow an interesting intensification of the operation. Among the most prominent technical approaches, the steam explosion (SE) is the most famous. However, this high pressure-high temperature process implies too high energy consumption while leading to the generation of many non-fermentable molecules. In recent years, many studies have proposed the use of the Instant Controlled Pressure-Drop (DIC) texturing pretreatment as an effective alternative to SE for ethanol production. Therefore, in this manuscript, we propose to compare and discuss the fundamental principles and experimental results of these two operations, as presented in the relevant literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The industrial vinegar residue (VR) from solid-state fermentation, mainly cereals and their bran, will be a potential feedstock for future biofuels because of their low cost and easy availability. However, utilization of VR for butanol production has not been as much optimized as other sources of lignocellulose, which mainly stem from two key elements: (i) high biomass recalcitrance to enzymatic sugar release; (ii) lacking of suitable industrial biobutanol production strain. Though steam explosion has been proved effective for bio-refinery, few studies report SE for VR pretreatment. Much of the relevant knowledge remains unknown. Meanwhile, recent efforts on rational metabolic engineering approaches to increase butanol production in Clostridium strain are quite limited. In this study, we assessed the impact of SE pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis kinetics, overall sugar recovery and applied atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutant method for the Clostridium strain development to solve the long-standing problem. RESULTS SE pretreatment was first performed. At the optimal condition, 29.47% of glucan, 71.62% of xylan and 22.21% of arabinan were depolymerized and obtained in the water extraction. In the sequential enzymatic hydrolysis process, enzymatic hydrolysis rate was increased by 13-fold compared to the VR without pretreatment and 19.60 g glucose, 15.21 g xylose and 5.63 g arabinose can be obtained after the two-step treatment from 100 g VR. Porous properties analysis indicated that steam explosion can effectively generate holes with diameter within 10-20 nm. Statistical analysis proved that enzymatic hydrolysis rate of VR followed the Pseudop-second-order kinetics equation and the relationship between SE severity and enzymatic hydrolysis rate can be well revealed by Boltzmann model. Finally, a superior inhibitor-tolerant strain, Clostridium acetobutylicum Tust-001, was generated with ARTP treatment. The water extraction and enzymolysis liquid gathered were successfully fermented, resulting in butanol titer of 7.98 g/L and 12.59 g/L of ABE. CONCLUSIONS SE proved to be quite effective for VR due to high fermentable sugar recovery and enzymatic hydrolysate fermentability. Inverse strategy employing ARTP and repetitive domestication for strain breeding is quite feasible, providing us with a new tool for solving the problem in the biofuel fields.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the effect of steam explosion of oil palm frond (OPF) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) on nutrient composition and ruminal fermentation characteristics in vitro. The results showed that steam explosion decreased NDF (P < 0.01), ADF (P < 0.01), and hemicellulose content (P < 0.01) in OPF and EFB. Steam explosion improved the effective energy value of OPF and EFB. In vitro fermentation results revealed that 72-h gas production capacity of OPF and EFB increased by 12.60and 85.06% (P < 0.01), respectively, after steam explosion. Steam explosion had a tendency to improve the concentration of total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) (P = 0.082). In conclusion, steam explosion of OPF and EFB reduced NDF, ADF, and hemicellulose content and increased gas production and TVFA concentration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of steam explosion on lignocellulose digestibility of, and methane production from corn stover by a co-culture of anaerobic fungus and methanogen. The cumulative methane production at 72 h of incubation from the steam-exploded corn stover was 32.2 ± 1.74 mL, which not significantly different (P > 0.05) from that of the untreated corn stover (37.1 ± 1.09 mL). However, steam explosion decreased the hemicellulose contents of corn stover by 28.0 ± 0.39% and increased the neutral detergent solute by 23.5 ± 0.25%. While this treatment did not affect the dry matter digestibility (64.1 ± 0.26%, and 64.1 ± 0.28%, respectively). In conclusion, the co-culture of anaerobic fungus and methanogen can degrade the crude fibrous portion of corn stover without any pretreatments. It possesses promising biotechnological prospects for conversion of crop residue based straw resources to obtain biofuel in the form of methane.

Abstract
This study evaluated the physicochemical properties of oils extracted from steam-exploded camellia seed (Camellia oleifera Abel.). Steam pressure, resident time, fatty acid composition, total phenolics, tocopherol, squalene, and sterol contents, and volatile compounds were determined. 1H NMR and FTIR spectra were performed for the structure of camellia seed oil. This study has found the highest yield of oil was 86.56% and was obtained when steam explosion pretreatment was at 1.6 MPa 30 s. Oil extracted by steam explosion pretreatment exhibited favorable physicochemical properties and stronger antioxidant activities compared to untreated oil. The compositions of fatty acid were similar between treated and untreated camellia seed oil. According to the 1H NMR and FTIR analyses, the functional groups of the oils were not significantly affected by the steam explosion pretreatment. Furans such as 2-pentyl-furan, 2-furanmethanol, and 3-methyl-furan were produced from stream-exploded camellia seed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that steam explosion pretreatment efficiently promoted the release of oil by destroying the cell structure of camellia seed. Therefore, steam explosion can be an effective method for the camellia seed oil extraction.

Abstract
Wheat straw is considered an abundant lignocellulosic biomass source in China. However, its recalcitrance hinders the degradation of wheat straw by enzymes and microbes. In this study, we investigated the optimum steam explosion conditions of pretreated wheat straw by response surface methodology to improve its nutrition level as a feedstuff for the ruminant industry or as a feedstock for biofuel production. The highest volatile fatty acid (VFA) yield (30.50 mmol L−1) was obtained at 2.3 MPa, 90 s and a moisture content of 36.46%. Under optimal conditions, steam explosion significantly altered the fermentation parameters in vitro. Ionic chromatography showed that pretreating wheat straw could improve the production of fermentable sugar, which was ascribed to the degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose. In addition, high throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that steam explosion changed the microbial community and enhanced the colonization of cellulolytic bacteria. Our findings demonstrated that steam explosion pretreatment could greatly improve the digestibility of wheat straw by facilitating sugar production and microbial colonization. With this methodology, general targets for key process variables can be draw, a valuable feedback for Research & Development teams. An integrated first- and second-generation ethanol from sugarcane biorefinery is presented as a case study for the methodology, with the biomass pretreated by liquid hot water, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose fraction. The hemicellulose fraction may be either fermented or biodigested. The methodology was able to identify the main variables that affect the process global economic performance: enzyme load in the cellulose hydrolysis reactor, cellulose-to-glucose, and xylose-to-ethanol yields. Windows of feasible operation are the graphical output of the methodology, outlining regions to be further explored experimentally. One example of quantitative result is that the maximum feasible enzyme load was 11.3 FPU/gcellulose when xylose is fermented to ethanol and 7.7 FPU/gcellulose when xylose is biodigested.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate steam explosion as a pretreatment to enhance degradation of corn stover by ruminal microbiome. The steam explosion conditions were first optimized, and then the efficacy of steam explosion was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Steam explosion altered the physical and chemical structure of corn stover as revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively, and increased its cellulose content while decreasing hemicellulose content. Steam-exploded corn stover also increased release of reducing sugars, rate of fermentation, and production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in vitro. The steam explosion treatment increased microbial colonization and in situ degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose of corn stover in the rumen of dairy cows. Steam explosion may be a useful pretreatment of corn stover to improve its nutritional value as forage for cattle, or as feedstock for biofuel production.

Abstract
1. The effects of different fibre sources on the growth performance, carcass characteristics and gastrointestinal tract development were studied in growing Greylag geese (Anser anser). 2. Four experimental diets were formulated with corn (maize) straw silage (CSS), steam-exploded corn (maize) straw, steam-exploded wheat straw, and steam-exploded rice straw as fibre sources. A total of 224 male Greylag geese at 28 d of age were randomly assigned to one of the 4 experimental diets. 3. The birds fed on the CSS diets had higher average daily feed intakes than those fed on the steam-exploded straws. However, the 4 treatments had similar average daily gain, which contributed to significant differences in feed conversion ratios. The different fibre sources had no significant effects on the carcass characteristics. 4. The CSS-fed birds had larger gizzards and lower relative length of the caeca than the other three groups. However, the relative weights and lengths of the other gut segments, the relative weights of major organs and the pH values of the gastrointestinal contents were similar between the 4 treatments. It was concluded that straw fibres with different physico-chemical properties exerted an effect on daily feed intake and gastrointestinal development, especially for the gizzard. The pretreatment of straw had a large effect on utilisation efficiency and animal performance. Steam explosion is a promising straw pretreatment for inclusion in diets for geese.

Abstract
In order to increase corn straw degradation, the straw was kept in the combined solution of 15% (w/w) lime supernatant and 2% (w/w) sodium hydroxide with liquid-to-solid ratio of 13:1 (mL/g) at 83.92°C for 6h; and then added with 3% (v/v) H2O2 for reaction at 50°C for 2h; finally cellulase (32.3 FPU/g dry matter) and xylanase (550 U/g dry matter) was added to keep at 50°C for 48 h. The maximal reducing sugars yield (348.77 mg/g) was increased by 126.42% (P<0.05), and the degradation rates of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in pretreated corn straw with enzymatic hydrolysis were increased by 40.08%, 45.71% and 52.01%, compared with the native corn straw with enzymatic hydrolysis (P<0.05). The following study indicated that the combined microbial fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis could further increase straw degradation and reducing sugar yield (442.85 mg/g, P<0.05).

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the optimum conditions for calcium oxide (CaO) treatment of anaerobically stored corn stover by in situ and in vitro methods. Four ruminally cannulated, non-lactating, non-pregnant Holstein cows were used to determine the in situ effective degradabilities of dry matter (ISDMD), organic matter (ISOMD), neutral detergent fibre (ISNDFD), in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) and gas production in 72 h (GP72h ) of corn stover. A completely randomized design involving a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement was adopted. Ground corn stover was treated with different levels of CaO (3%, 5% and 7% of dry stover) at varying moisture contents (40%, 50% and 60%) and stored under anaerobic conditions for 15 days before analysis. Compared with untreated corn stover, the CaO-treated stover had increased ash and calcium (Ca) contents but decreased aNDF and OM contents. The moisture content, CaO level and their interaction affected (p < 0.01) the content of aNDF, ash and OM, and the ratio of aNDF/OM. The greatest ISDMD, ISOMD and ISNDFD were observed when stover was treated with 7% CaO and 60% moisture, while no differences (p > 0.01) in these in situ degradability parameters were observed between the stover treated with 5% CaO at 60% moisture content and those treated with 7% CaO at 60% moisture content. Corn stover treated with 5% CaO at 50% moisture had the maximum IVOMD and GP72 h among the treatments, and there was no difference (p > 0.01) between 50% and 60% moisture. Results from this study suggested that 5% CaO applied at 60% moisture could be an effective and economical treatment combination.

Abstract
The recycling of lost phosphorus (P) is important in sustainable development. In line with this objective, biochar adsorption is a promising method of P recovery. Therefore, our study investigates the efficiency and selectivity of magnesium modified corn biochar (Mg/biochar) in relation to P adsorption. It also examines the available P derived from postsorption Mg/biochar. Mg/biochar is rich in magnesium nanoparticles and organic functional groups, and it can adsorb 90% of the equilibrium amount of P within 30 min. The Mg/biochar P adsorption process is mainly controlled by chemical action. The maximum P adsorption amount of Mg/biochar is 239 mg/g. The Langmuir-Freundlich model fits the P adsorption isotherm best. Thermodynamics calculation shows ∆H > 0, ∆G < 0, ∆S > 0, and it demonstrates the P adsorption process is an endothermic, spontaneous, and increasingly disordered. The optimal pH is 9. The amounts of P adsorbed by Mg/B300, Mg/B450, and Mg/B600 from swine wastewater are lower than that adsorbed from synthetic P wastewater by 6.6%, 4.8%, and 4.2%, respectively. Mg/biochar is more resistant to pH and to the influence of coexisting ions than biochar. Finally, postsorption Mg/biochar can release P persistently. The P release equilibrium concentrations are ordered as follows: Mg/B600 > Mg/B450 > Mg/B300. The postsorption Mg/B300, Mg/B450, and Mg/B600 can release 3.3%, 3.9%, and 4.4% of the total adsorbed P, respectively, per interval time.

Abstract
A screw extrude steam explosion (SESE) apparatus was designed and introduced to pretreat corn stover continuously for its following enzymatic hydrolysis. SESE parameters temperature (100, 120, 150°C) and residence time (1, 2, 3min) were investigated. The enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover pretreated by SESE and steam explosion (SE) process was carried out and analyzed systematically. A serial of analysis methods were established, and the corn stover before/after the pretreatment were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Thermal Gravity/Derivative Thermal Gravity Analysis (TG/DTG). After treated by SESE pretreatment at the optimum condition (150°C, 2min), the pretreated corn stover exhibited highest enzymatic hydrolysis yield (89%), and rare fermentation inhibitors formed. Characterization results indicated that the highest yield could be attributed to the effective removal of lignin/hemicellulose and destruction of cellulose structure by SESE pretreatment.

Abstract
In order to improve corn straw degradation, steam explosion, sodium hydroxide soaking and Aspergillus oryzae fermentation were used. The optimal sodium hydroxide pretreatment condition for lignin degradation was obtained. The degradation rates of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin were 54.68%, 17.76% and 33.14% for the exploded straw (P<0.05); 67.92%, 2.44% (P>0.05) and 76.54% for the alkali-treated straw (P<0.05); 75.98%, 39.93% and 77.88% for the exploded and alkali-treated straw (P<0.05), respectively. The following microbial fermentation could degrade hemicellulose and cellulose further (P<0.05). Cellulase, amylase and protease activities produced during microbial fermentation in the pretreated corn straw were lower than that in the untreated one (P<0.05); however, glucose content was increased by microbial fermentation (P<0.05). It can be concluded that the combined treatments of steam explosion, sodium hydroxide and microbial fermentation will be a good method for straw degradation.

Abstract
The effect of Kraft lignin presenting on the hydrolysis and dehydration of C5 and C6 sugars, cellulose, hemicelluloses and biomass under hot compressed water (HCW) in the presence of H3PO4 catalyst was intensively studied. The lignin strongly inhibited the acid hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose to glucose and xylose, respectively. Interestingly, the admixed lignin markedly promoted the isomerization of glucose to fructose, and dehydration of fructose (except at the low catalyst loading), resulting in high 5-hydroxymethylfurfural yields. Nonetheless, lignin inhibited the hydrolysis of xylan to xylose and dehydration of xylose to furfural. Moreover, the acidity of the system significantly affects the hydrolysis/dehydration of biomass. It was revealed that the presence of lignin strongly interfered the yields of sugars and furans produced from raw corncob, while the delignified corncob provided significant improvement of product yields, confirming the observed role of lignin in the biomass conversion system via sugar platforms.
