Degradation of contaminants in plasma technology: An overview

The information of plasma technologies applications for environmental clean-up on treating and degrading metals, metalloids, dyes, biomass, antibiotics, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), bacteria, virus and fungi is compiled and organized in the review article. Different reactor configurations of plasma technology have been applied for reactive species generation, responsible for the pollutants removal, hydrogen and methane production and microorganism inactivation. Therefore, in this review article, the reactive species from discharge plasma are presented here to provide the insight into the environmental applications. The combinations of plasma technology with flux agent and photocatalytic are also given in this review paper associated with the setup of the plasma system on the removal process of metals, VOCs, and microorganisms. Furthermore, the potential of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) inactivation via plasma technology is also described in this review paper. Detailed information of plasma parameter configuration is given to support the influence of the critical process in the plasma system to deal with contaminants.

Characteristics of hydrogen-producing enrichment cultures from marine sediment using macroalgae Laminaria japonica as a feedstock

This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of hydrogen production by mixed cultures using Laminaria japonica hydrolysates. The hydrolysates of L. japonica were prepared by pretreatment methods, including heat (100°C or 121°C) and acid (HCl or H2SO4) pretreatments. The mixed cultures could produce hydrogen using L. japonica as a substrate, with the highest cumulative hydrogen production of 825 ± 14 mL/L from HCl-pretreated L. japonica. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the microbial community in the hydrolysate of HCl-pretreated L. japonica was the most diverse among all the samples, with a Shannon diversity index of 5.253. The mixed culture from HCl-pretreated L. japonica and those from heat-pretreated (100°C and 121°C) L. japonica occupied different regions in a principal component analysis (PCA) plot. The dominant population in the hydrolysate of HCl-pretreated L. japonica was represented by hydrogen-producing bacteria, Clostridium spp. and Bacillus spp. The results suggested that L. japonica was an optimal feedstock for hydrogen production. The acid (HCl) pretreatment method could effectively enhance the hydrogen production from L. japonica.

Resourceful treatment of alcohol distillery wastewater by pulsed discharge

Resourceful treatment of alcohol distillery wastewater by pulsed discharge in liquid (PDL) was first studied in this work. The biodegradability of alcohol wastewater can be effectively improved and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal attained over 40% within 15min PDL treatment. Hydrogen produced from the treating processes was emphatically analyzed. The flow rate, and yield of hydrogen achieved were 80mL/min, 146mL/g COD removed within 30min respectively, which were much better than existing technologies. Meanwhile, the mechanism of hydrogen production from alcohol distillery wastewater by PDL was presented in this work indicating that different region in reactor has different mechanism. In discharge channel, high-energy electrons and resultant free radicals played a leading role. Far away from discharge channel, the neutral particles with strong oxidizing were more important. This work can be a good guidance for both treatment of refractory wastewater and mechanism of hydrogen production by plasma reforming.
