Abstract
This study investigated the enzymatic saccharification of alkaline-pretreated sugarcane bagasse (PSB) and the bioconversion of simple sugars from hydrolysates to ethanol and other bioproducts by the yeast Galactomyces geotrichum. The effects of percentage of dry substrate (3 and 10% w/v) and time of hydrolysis (24 and 72 h) in the content of released sugars were evaluated. The concentrations of monosaccharides and total reducing sugars (TRS) were calculated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and by 3.5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method, respectively. The highest concentrations of TRS, glucose and xylose (73.96, 31.78 and 10.85 g/L, respectively) were obtained after the saccharification of 10% of PSB with Cellic CTec3 multi-enzyme cocktail (10 FPU/g cellulose) during 72 h (hydrolysate IV). G. geotrichum UFVJM-R150 fermented both glucose and xylose from the hydrolysates. The most efficient ethanol production was obtained after the fermentation of hydrolysate IV (9.99 g/L of ethanol, volumetric productivity-QP of 0.42 g/L.h and yield of ethanol as a function of the substrate-YP/S of 0.27 gethanol/gsugar). Besides ethanol, G. geotrichum was also able to produce other high-value chemicals such as isoamyl alcohol and galacturonic acid. This is the first report of the potential of the yeast G. geotrichum to fermentate sugarcane bagasse hydrolysates with the production of important bioproducts to further use by biorefineries.

Abstract
A combination of chemo-mechanical pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass was developed with objectives to evaluate and optimize the energy efficiency and waste generation occurred in the pretreatment process. Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was chemically pretreated with alkaline and alkaline peroxide followed by mechanical size reduction and enzymatic hydrolysis. The high solid and low solid loading pretreatments were studied to compare the total energy consumption, energy efficiency as well as waste generation. SCBSHNa (1:5) namely semi-humid chemo-mechanical pretreatment was found as the most effective pretreatment by decreasing 65% of total energy consumption. Moreover, the SCBSHNa (1:5) achieved the highest energy efficiency resulting in 0.536 kg reducing sugars/kWh and generated 0.33 kg of waste/kg reducing sugars. The developed process represented the advantages on energy efficiency and less waste generation compared to the conventional chemical soaking pretreatment process.

Abstract
Waste paper has considerable potential as a raw material for lactic acid (LA) production due to high cellulose content, abundance and low cost. In this study, four kinds of waste papers were used for LA production through simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) by Streptococcus thermophilus. The SSF of office paper achieved the highest LA concentration (39.71 g/L), while the highest LA yield was observed for magazine (99.56%), followed by office paper (82.85%). High LA concentration is unfavorable to total LA conversion because of product inhibition. However, the addition of Gleditsia saponin (GS) could obtain both high yield and high concentration of LA at a low enzyme loading, indicating that product inhibition could be moderated. A lactic acid yield of 86.30% was obtained from office paper at an enzyme loading of 9 FPU/g-cellulose with GS, which was higher than that of without GS at a higher loading of 18 FPU/g-cellulose.

Abstract
Sodium methoxide (CH3ONa) with glycerol pretreatment (CWGP) was performed to improve the enzymatic digestibility of sugarcane bagasse (SCB). Response surface methodology was utilized to optimize the CWGP parameters for pretreating SCB from the perspective of total fermentable sugar yield (TFSY) and total fermentable sugar concentration (TFSC). Under the optimal CWGP conditions, 0.5666g/g of TFSY (0.82% CH3ONa, 1.11h, 150°C) and 17.75g/L of TFSC (0.87% CH3ONa, 1.38h, 149.27°C) were achieved, corresponding to delignification of 79.05% and 79.34%, respectively. Compared the pretreatment using glycerol or CH3ONa alone, the CWGP has significant synergies to enhance the enzymatic efficiency of SCB. The physical and chemical characteristics of untreated and pretreated SCBs were analyzed using FT-IR, XRD, and SEM, and the results suggest that CWGP significantly increased the susceptibility of the substrates to enzymatic digestibility. Ultimately, CWGP might be a prospective candidate for the pretreatment process of enzyme-based lignocellulosic biorefineries.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to characterize cellulase from Aspergillus tubingensis NKBP-55 for generation of fermentable sugars from agricultural residues. The strain produced high titres of cellulase (750 U/gds) on copra meal in solid state fermentation (SSF). The enzyme preparation also showed hemicellulolytic activities (U/gds) viz. endo-mannanase (1023), endo-xylanase (167), β-glucosidase (72) and α-galactosidase (54). Zymography revealed presence of six cellulases, six mannanases and one β-glucosidase. It effectively degraded sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and rice straw (RS) releasing xylose, glucose and cellobiose. One cellulase (Cat 1, Mr ∼65 kDa) was purified and characterized. It retained more than 50% activity at 70 °C after 150 mins and its activity was enhanced in the presence of Mn2+ ions (130%) and β-mercaptoethanol (140%). FTIR and 13C CP/MAS NMR analysis of the enzyme treated SCB and RS revealed degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose, while 1H and 13C liquid state NMR experiments confirmed release of glucose.

Abstract
Sodium hydroxide pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse under vacuum conditions was established and evaluated in this study. Compared to pretreatment under conventional moderate pressure conditions, only half of the total phenolic compounds and less than half of the formic acid were produced under vacuum conditions, while the yield of total fermentable sugar was significantly increased by 31.38%. The pretreatment parameters: NaOH concentration, pretreatment time, and pretreatment temperature, were optimized using response surface methodology based on the response values of the total fermentable sugar yield (TFSY) and the total fermentable sugar concentration (TFSC), respectively. Under the optimal conditions, the TFSY of 0.5146g/g and the TFSC of 17.37g/L were achieved, respectively. By adjusting the ratio of cellulases to xylanase, the TFSY reached a maximum of 0.5213g/g when the ratio was 1:1, while the maximum TFSC of 17.71g/L was achieved when the ratio was 1:4.

Abstract
To promote NaOH pretreatment of corn stalk (CS), a continuous processing system uniting magnetic field and millimeter-scaled channel flow was established. First, four comparative pretreatments were conducted: (I) CS was pretreated with NaOH under traditional agitation; (II) CS was pretreated with NaOH in a flowing state inside the millimeter-scaled channel; (III) CS was pretreated with NaOH in a flowing state and under a static magnetic field; or (IV) CS was pretreated with NaOH in a flowing state and under a rotating magnetic field. By comparison, the highest pentose (121.22mg/g dry CS) and hexose (287.04mg/g dry CS) yields were obtained in the shortest pretreatment time with Pretreatment IV (8h). Accordingly, the key parameters of Pretreatment IV were optimized as 6.71Hz frequency, 0.50L/min flow rate, and 1.02% NaOH concentration. Under these conditions, 439.24mg sugars were released by 1g dry CS during pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis.
