A novel aerated surface flow constructed wetland using exhaust gas from biological wastewater treatment: Performance and mechanisms

Biotechnology to reduce logistics burden and promote environmental stewardship for Air Force civil engineering requirements

This review provides discussion of advances in biotechnology with specific application to civil engineering requirements for airfield and airbase operations. The broad objectives are soil stabilization, waste management, and environmental protection. The biotechnology focal areas address (1) treatment of soil and sand by biomineralization and biopolymer addition, (2) reduction of solid organic waste by anaerobic digestion, (3) application of microbes and higher plants for biological processing of contaminated wastewater, and (4) use of indigenous materials for airbase construction and repair. The consideration of these methods in military operating scenarios, including austere environments, involves comparison with conventional techniques. All four focal areas potentially reduce logistics burden, increase environmental sustainability, and may provide energy source, or energy-neutral practices that benefit military operations.

Influence of nitrogen sources on wastewater treatment performance by filamentous algae in constructed wetland system

Although filamentous algae have the characteristics of high nutrient assimilation ability, and adaptation to different conditions, studies on their role in water purification of constructed wetlands (CWs) are limited. In this study, the wastewater treatment capacity under different nitrogen sources was explored by constructing a filamentous algal CW (FACW) system. Results confirmed the fast and stable operation efficiency of the FACW system. Ammonia nitrogen was preferred in Cladophora sp. absorption and assimilation. The nutrient consumption rate (NCR) for total nitrogen (TN) of AG was 2.65 mg g-1 d-1, much higher than that of nitrate nitrogen (NG) (0.89 mg g-1 d-1). The symbiosis of bacteria and Cladophora sp. Contributed to pollutant removal. A stable and diverse community of microorganisms was found on Cladophora sp. Surface, which revealed different phylogenetic relationships and functional bacterial proportions with those attached on sediment surface. In addition, temperature and light intensity have great influence on the purification ability of plants, and low hydraulic retention time is beneficial to the cost-effective operation of the system. This study provides a method to expand the utilization of wetland plants and apply large filamentous algae to the purification of wetland water quality.

Comparison of nitrogen removal performance and mechanism from low-polluted wastewater by constructed wetlands with two oxygen supply strategies: Tidal flow and intermittent aeration

Due to dissolved oxygen (DO) limited nitrogen removal efficiency in constructed wetlands (CWs), two representative oxygen-suppling CWs, i.e., tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) and intermittently aerated constructed wetlands (IACWs) were proposed to compare the effect of oxygen supply strategies on the nitrogen removal performance and mechanism. Results showed that the removal efficiencies of NH₄⁺-N and COD in IACWs were as high as 90.35-97.14% and 91.14-92.44%, respectively. In terms of TN, TFCWs (83.82%) showed a significantly higher removal efficiency than IACWs, and this result was derived with the flooded/drained phase (FP/DP) ratio of 21 h:3 h in TFCWs, because rhythmic FP and DP formed a high oxygen gradient at different depths of the system, which intensified the nitrification and denitrification simultaneously. The potential nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria (e.g., Nitrospira, Azospira, Haliangium, Bradyrhizobium and Arenimonas) were enriched more significantly in TFCWs compared with IACWs, as well as Bacillus for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, which promoted nitrogen transformation together. Also, the results of molecular ecological network analysis showed that bacterial community structure in IACWs was more complex and robust than in TFCWs, because there were obviously more nodes and links as well as a higher proportion of negative interference. However, the relationship between genera in TFCWs was closer depending on shorter path distances, and the keystone genus (Nitrosomonas) in related to nitrification was considered to play an important role in nitrogen transformation performance.

Removal behaviour of residual pollutants from biologically treated palm oil mill effluent by Pennisetum purpureum in constructed wetland

The reason for such enormous efforts in palm oil mill effluent research would be what has been singled out as one of the major sources of pollution in Malaysia, and perhaps the most costly and complex waste to manage. Palm oil mill final discharge, which is the treated effluent, will usually be discharged to nearby land or river since it has been the least costly way to dispose of. Irrefutably, the quality level of the treated effluent does not always satisfy the surface water quality in conformity to physicochemical characteristics. To work on improving the treated effluent quality, a vertical surface-flow constructed wetland system was designed with Pennisetum purpureum (Napier grass) planted on the wetland floor. The system effectively reduced the level of chemical oxygen demand by 62.2 ± 14.3%, total suspended solid by 88.1 ± 13.3%, ammonia by 62.3 ± 24.8%, colour by 66.6 ± 13.19%, and tannin and lignin by 57.5 ± 22.3%. Heat map depicted bacterial diversity and relative abundance in life stages from the wetland soil, whereby bacterial community associated with the pollutant removal was found to be from the families Anaerolineaceae and Nitrosomonadaceae, and phyla Cyanobacteria and Acidobacteria.

Effect of first-stage aeration on treatment of domestic sewage in different hybrid constructed wetlands

Two sets of hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) with the first-stage aeration were used to treat actual domestic sewage in this paper, where the effects of three important factors of aeration mode, hydraulic loading rates (HLR), and aeration volume on the removal of pollutants in both HCWs were studied in contrasts. In addition, the pollutant removal efficiency, the contribution of plants, and the characteristics of biofilm in both HCWs were explored. The results of 250-day experiment showed that the TN removal capacity of HCW combining vertical flow CW with horizontal flow CW (VF-HF) was better than HCW's converse combination (HF-VF) in treatingsewage, while the removal efficiency of COD and NH₄⁺-N were similar, and the concentrations of TN and COD in the effluent of VF-HF could successfully meet the National discharge requirements. Compared with the continuous aeration, the intermittent aeration only had a little effect on the removal of COD and NH₄⁺-N, but could improve TN removal performance in both HCWs. Meanwhile, increasing the aeration volume was beneficial to remove NH₄⁺-N but not TN in HCWs. In addition, although the pollutant removal performances in both HCWs were impacted, the removal capacity of TN in VF-HF was only affected a little, when HLR was increased by 50%. The contribution of plants' uptake accounted for about 10% to nitrogen removal and 20% to phosphorus removal in both HCWs. The biomass at the filler surface near the plant rhizosphere was greater than that in the non-rhizosphere zones, and the impact of plant rhizosphere on the nitrification activity of biofilm was significantly greater than that on denitrification activity in both HCWs.

High denitrification potential but low nitrous oxide emission in a constructed wetland treating nitrate-polluted agricultural run-off

Constructed wetlands (CW) can efficiently remove nitrogen from polluted agricultural run-off, however, a potential caveat is nitrous oxide (N₂O), a harmful greenhouse gas and stratospheric ozone depleter. During five sampling campaigns, we measured N₂O fluxes from a 0.53 ha off-stream CW treating nitrate-rich water from the intensively fertilized watershed in Rampillon, France, using automated chambers with a quantum cascade laser system, and manual chambers. Sediment samples were analysed for potential N₂ flux using the HeO₂ incubation method. Both inlet nitrate (NO₃^-) concentrations and N₂O emission varied significantly between the seasons. In the Autumn and Winter inlet concentrations were about 11 mg NO₃^--N L^-1, and < 6.5 mg NO₃^--N L^-1 in the Spring and Summer. N₂O emission was highest in the Autumn (mean ± standard error: 9.7 ± 0.2 μg N m^-2 h^-1) and lowest in the Summer (wet period: 0.2 ± 0.3 μg N m^-2 h^-1). The CW was a very weak source of N₂O emitting 0.32 kg N₂O-N ha^-1 yr^-1 and removing around 938 kg NO₃^--N ha^-1 yr^-1, the ratio of N₂O-N emitted to NO₃^--N removed was 0.033%. The automated and manual chambers gave similar results. From the potential N₂O formation in the sediment, only 9% was emitted to the atmosphere, the average N₂ N ₂O ratio was high: 89:1 for N₂-N_potential: N₂O-N_potential and 1353:1 for N₂-N_potential: N₂O-N_emitted. These results indicate complete denitrification. The focused principal component analysis showed strong positive correlation between the gaseous N₂O fluxes and the following environmental factors: NO₃^--N concentrations in inlet water, streamflow, and nitrate reduction rate. Water temperature, TOC and DOC in the water and hydraulic residence time showed negative correlations with N₂O emissions. Shallow off-stream CWs such as Rampillon may have good nitrate removal capacity with low N₂O emissions.

The simultaneous antibiotics and nitrogen removal in vertical flow constructed wetlands: Effects of substrates and responses of microbial functions

A vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) packed with the different substrates was designed to remediate the antibiotics in the wastewater. Zeolite (CW-Z) paralleled with Manganese (Mn) ore (CW-M) and biochar (CW-C) were used to enhance the synchronous removal of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIPH), sulfamethazine (SMZ) and nitrogen (N) from the wastewater. The result indicated that CW-M had a significant potential to remove CIPH (93%), SMZ (69%), TN (71%), NH₄⁺-N (94%) and NO₃^--N (94%) across all the treatments. The abundance of amoA, nirK and nirS genes are dramatically higher in CW-M and CW-C, while CW-C inhibited the production of quinolone resistance genes. Results showed that different substrates could affect the microbial diversity and structure. The addition of Mn ore to the water led to an improved abundance of nitrogen-related phyla. Overall, Mn ore has a considerable potential to simultaneously remove antibiotics and N in VFCWs.

Wetlands for wastewater treatment

This article presents an update on the research and practical demonstration of wetland treatment technologies for wastewater treatment. Applications of wetlands in wastewater treatment (as an advanced treatment unit or a decentralized system) and stormwater management or treatment for nutrient and pollutant removal (metals, industrial and emerging pollutants including pharmaceutical compounds and pathogens) are highlighted. A summary of studies involving the effects of vegetation, wetland design and operation, and configurations for efficient treatment of various municipal and industrial wastewaters is also included. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Provides an update on current research and development of wetland technologies for wastewater treatment. Effects of vegetation, pathogens removal, heavy metals and emerging pollutants removal are included. Wetland design and operation is a key factor to improve water quality of wetland effluent.
