Forward Osmosis Application for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants from Municipal Wastewater: A Review

Forward osmosis (FO) has attracted special attention in water and wastewater treatment due to its role in addressing the challenges of water scarcity and contamination. The presence of emerging contaminants in water sources raises concerns regarding their environmental and public health impacts. Conventional wastewater treatment methods cannot effectively remove these contaminants; thus, innovative approaches are required. FO membranes offer a promising solution for wastewater treatment and removal of the contaminants in wastewater. Several factors influence the performance of FO processes, including concentration polarization, membrane fouling, draw solute selection, and reverse salt flux. Therefore, understanding and optimizing these factors are crucial aspects for improving the efficiency and sustainability of the FO process. This review stresses the need for research to explore the potential and challenges of FO membranes to meet municipal wastewater treatment requirements, to optimize the process, to reduce energy consumption, and to promote scalability for potential industrial applications. In conclusion, FO shows promising performance for wastewater treatment, dealing with emerging pollutants and contributing to sustainable practices. By improving the FO process and addressing its challenges, we could contribute to improve the availability of water resources amid the global water scarcity concerns, as well as contribute to the circular economy.

Evaluation of Forward Osmosis and Low-Pressure Reverse Osmosis with a Tubular Membrane for the Concentration of Municipal Wastewater and the Production of Biogas

Currently, freshwater scarcity is one of the main issues that the world population has to face. To address this issue, new wastewater treatment technologies have been developed such as membrane processes. Among them, due to the energy disadvantages of pressure-driven membrane processes, Forward Osmosis (FO) and Low-Pressure Reverse Osmosis (LPRO) have been introduced as promising alternatives. In this study, the behavior of a 2.3 m² tubular membrane TFO-D90 when working with municipal wastewater has been studied. Its performances have been evaluated and compared in two operating modes such as FO and LPRO. Parameters such as fouling, flow rates, water flux, draw solution concentration, organic matter concentration, as well as its recovery have been studied. In addition, the biogas production capacity has been evaluated with the concentrated municipal wastewater obtained from each process. The results of this study indicate that the membrane can work in both processes (FO and LPRO) but, from the energy and productivity point of view, FO is considered more appropriate mainly due to its lower fouling level. This research may offer a new point of view on low-energy and energy recovery wastewater treatment and the applicability of FO and LPRO for wastewater concentration.

Management of biological sewage sludge: Fertilizer nitrogen recovery as the solution to fertilizer crisis

In the current situation of a serious raw material crisis related to the disruption of supply chains, the bioeconomy is of particular significance. Rising prices and the problem with the availability of natural gas have made N fertilizers production very expensive. It is expected that due to natural gas shortages, conventional production of nitrogen fertilizers by chemical synthesis will be hindered in the coming season. An important alternative and an opportunity to solve the problems of fertilizer nitrogen availability are biological wastewater treatment plants, which can be treated as a renewable biological nitrogen mines. Sewage sludge (including activated sludge) contains up to 6-8% DM. N. Considering the quantity of sewage sludge generated in wastewater treatment plants, it can become an important raw material for the sustainable production of organic-mineral fertilizers from renewable resources available locally, with a low carbon footprint. Furthermore, the sewage sludge management method should take nitrogen retention into account and should not allow the emission of greenhouse gases containing nitrogen. This article analyzes the technological solutions of nitrogen recovery for fertilization purposes from biological wastewater treatment plants in the context of a new and difficult resource situation. Conventional and new nitrogen recovery methods were analyzed from the perspective of the current legal situation. An attempt was made to evaluate the possibility of implementing the assumptions of the circular economy through the recovery of renewable nitrogen resources from municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Enrichment and balancing of nutrients for improved methane production using three compositionally different agro-livestock wastes: Process performance and microbial community analysis

Balanced nutrition is important for maximizing anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. Herein, the strategy of balancing sugar-fiber-nitrogen nutrients was first established for improved methane production by co-digesting two agricultural and one livestock wastes with complementary compositional properties, such as banana pseudo-stem (BPS), sugarcane baggage (SCB), and chicken manure (CM) having high sugar, fiber and nitrogen contents, respectively. The maximum methane yield was 186.5 mL/g VS_added with a mixture of 45.7% BPS, 26.2% SCB and 28.1% CM (with 1: 11.3: 0.3 of sugar to fiber to nitrogen ratio), increasing by 16.1%, 53.3%, 122.6% than those of mono- BPS, SCB, and CM, respectively. The co-digestion process remained stable under an organic load of 4 g VS/(L·day), which was attributed to the predominant presence of Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Thauera, uncultured_bacterium_p_Aegiribacteria, and hydrogenotrophic methanogens. This study provides a deeper understanding of the co-digestion with agricultural and livestock wastes from the perspective of nutrient balance.

Increasing Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency Using Food-Waste-Based Biochar

The efficiency of methane production by anaerobic digestion (AD), during which energy is generated from organic waste, can be increased in various ways. Recent research developments have increased the volume of gas production during AD using biochar. Previous studies have used food waste itself in AD, or, added wood-biochar or sewage sludge charcoal as an accelerant of the AD process. The application of food-waste biochar in AD using activated sludge has not yet been studied and is considered a potential method of utilizing food waste. Therefore, this study investigated the use of biochar prepared by the thermal decomposition of food waste as an additive to AD tanks to increase methane production. The addition of food-waste biochar at 1% of the digestion tank volume increased the production of digestion gas by approximately 10% and methane by 4%. We found that food-waste biochar served as a medium with trace elements that promoted the proliferation of microorganisms and increased the efficiency of AD.

Biogas Production from Concentrated Municipal Sewage by Forward Osmosis, Micro and Ultrafiltration

Direct application of anaerobic digestion to sewage treatment is normally only possible under tropical weather conditions. This is the result of its diluted nature and temperatures far from those suitable for anaerobic conversion of organic matter. Then, direct application of anaerobic treatment to sewage would require changing temperature, concentration, or both. Modification of sewage temperature would require much more energy than contained in the organic matter. Then, the feasible alternative seems to be the application of a pre-concentration step that may be accomplished by membrane filtration. This research studied the pre-concentration of municipal sewage as a potential strategy to enable the direct anaerobic conversion of organic matter. Three different membrane processes were tested: microfiltration, ultrafiltration and forward osmosis. The methane potential of the concentrates was determined. Results show that biogas production from the FO-concentrate was higher, most likely because of a higher rejection. However, salt increase due to rejection and reverse flux of ions from the draw solution may affect anaerobic digestion performance.

State-of-the-Art and Opportunities for Forward Osmosis in Sewage Concentration and Wastewater Treatment

The application of membrane technologies for wastewater treatment to recover water and nutrients from different types of wastewater can be an effective strategy to mitigate the water shortage and provide resource recovery for sustainable development of industrialisation and urbanisation. Forward osmosis (FO), driven by the osmotic pressure difference between solutions divided by a semi-permeable membrane, has been recognised as a potential energy-efficient filtration process with a low tendency for fouling and a strong ability to filtrate highly polluted wastewater. The application of FO for wastewater treatment has received significant attention in research and attracted technological effort in recent years. In this review, we review the state-of-the-art application of FO technology for sewage concentration and wastewater treatment both as an independent treatment process and in combination with other treatment processes. We also provide an outlook of the future prospects and recommendations for the improvement of membrane performance, fouling control and system optimisation from the perspectives of membrane materials, operating condition optimisation, draw solution selection, and multiple technologies combination.

Enhanced lignocellulosic component removal and biomethane potential from chestnut shell by a combined hydrothermal-alkaline pretreatment

This study proposes new perspectives for the management and biorefinery of wastes deriving from the agri-food sector such as chestnut shell (CS), which was here used as an organic feedstock for biomethane production through anaerobic digestion (AD). 1-5% alkaline (i.e. NaOH and KOH), hydrothermal (i.e. at 100 °C) and combined hydrothermal-alkaline pretreatments were employed to enhance the CS biodegradability prior to biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests conducted under mesophilic conditions. The hydrothermally-pretreated CS with 3% NaOH achieved the highest biomethane yield of 253 (±9) mL CH₄·g VS^-1 coupled to a volatile solid reduction of 48%. The hydrothermal-alkaline pretreatment positively affected both delignification and hemicellulose polymerization, promoting an approximately 2.4-fold higher substrate biodegradability compared to the untreated CS, which only reached a CH₄ production of 104 (±5) mL CH₄·g VS^-1. AD proceeded via volatile fatty acid accumulation, subsequently followed by methane production that was effectively simulated via the modified Gompertz kinetic having a R² of 0.974-0.999. Among the physical-chemical parameters characterizing the CS, the soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) was highly correlated with the BMP showing a Pearson coefficient of 0.952. The cumulative biomethane yield, the sCOD and the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin amount of CS were also processed through the least square method, obtaining a useful regression equation to predict the BMP. The economic assessment indicated that the hydrothermal-alkaline pretreatment is a cost-effective method to improve the BMP of CS, also for future full-scale applications.

Characterization of preconcentrated domestic wastewater toward efficient bioenergy recovery: Applying size fractionation, chemical composition and biomethane potential assay

Domestic wastewater (DWW) can be preconcentrated to facilitate energy recovery via anaerobic digestion (AD), following the concept of "carbon capture-anaerobic conversion-bioenergy utilization." Herein, real DWW and preconcentrated domestic wastewater (PDWW) were both subject to particle size fractionation (0.45-2000 μm). DWW is a type of low-strength wastewater (average COD of 440.26 mg/L), wherein 60% of the COD is attributed to the substances with particle size greater than 0.45 μm. Proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids are the major DWW components. PDWW with a high COD concentration of 2125.89 ± 273.71 mg/L was obtained by the dynamic membrane filtration (DMF) process. PDWW shows larger proportions of settleable and suspended fractions, and accounted for 63.4% and 33.8% of the particle size distribution, and 52.4% and 32.2% of the COD, respectively. The acceptable biomethane potential of 262.52 ± 11.86 mL CH₄/g COD of PDWW indicates bioenergy recovery is feasible based on DWW preconcentration and AD.

Zero-valent iron addition in anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactors for preconcentrated wastewater treatment: Performance and impact

Wastewater preconcentration to capture abundant organics is promising for facilitating subsequent anaerobic digestion (AD) to recover bioenergy, however research efforts are still needed to verify the effectiveness of such an emerging strategy as carbon capture plus AD. Therefore, lab-scale anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactors (AnDMBRs) without and with the addition of zero-valent iron (ZVI) (i.e., AnDMBR1 versus AnDMBR2) were developed for preconcentrated domestic wastewater (PDW) treatment, and the impact of ZVI addition on process performance and associated mechanisms were investigated. The stepwise addition of ZVI from 2 to 4 to 6 g/L improved the treatment performance as COD removal slightly increased and TP removal and methane production were enhanced by 53.3%-62.9% and 22.6%-31.3%, respectively, in consecutive operational phases. However, the average increasing rate of the transmembrane pressure (TMP) in AnDMBR2 (0.18 kPa/d) was obviously higher than that in AnDMBR1 (0.05 kPa/d), indicating an unfavorable impact of dosing ZVI on the dynamic membrane (DM) filtration performance. ZVI that has transformed to iron ions (mainly Fe²⁺) can behave as a coagulant, electron donor or inorganic foulant, thus enabling the excellent removal of dissolved phosphorous, enhancing the enrichment and activities of specific methanogens and causing the formation of a compact DM layer. Morphological, componential, and microbial community analyses provided new insights into the functional mechanisms of ZVI added to membrane-assisted anaerobic digesters, indicating that ZVI has the potential to improve bioenergy production and resource recovery, while optimizing the ZVI dosage should be considered to alleviate membrane fouling.

Zero-valent iron enhanced anaerobic digestion of pre-concentrated domestic wastewater for bioenergy recovery: Characteristics and mechanisms

Pre-concentrated domestic wastewater (PDWW) rich in organic matters can be a suitable substrate for anaerobic digestion (AD) towards holistic resource and bioenergy recovery. Micron zero-valent iron (ZVI) was applied in designed batch experiments during anaerobic treatment of PDWW to verify its roles in performance enhancement and associated mechanisms. In the selected range of food to microorganism (F/M) ratio, 0.5 gCOD/gMLVSS was most appropriate as biomethane production potential (BMP) of 0.275 L CH₄/gCOD was obtained. The optimal ZVI dosage at fixed F/M of 0.5 was 6 g/L, further enhancing the BMP by 15.2%. Furthermore, ZVI improved the hydrolysis process (producing more soluble organics) and regulated acidification process (affecting volatile fatty acids distribution). No obvious impact on acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis processes was noted with ZVI addition. ZVI based AD of the PDWW is promising for promoting the practical application of advanced domestic wastewater treatment strategy (pre-concentration plus anaerobic digestion).

Evaluating the performance of inorganic draw solution concentrations in an anaerobic forward osmosis membrane bioreactor for real municipal sewage treatment

Sewage can become a valuable source if its treatment is re-oriented for recovery. An anaerobic forward osmosis membrane bioreactor (AnOMBR) was developed for real municipal sewage treatment to investigate performance, biogas production, flux change and mixed liquor characteristics. The AnOMBR had a good treatment capacity with removal ratio of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen and total phosphorus more than 96%, 88%, 89% and almost 100%. Although high DS concentration increased the initial flux, it caused rapid decline and poor recoverability of FO membrane flux. Low DS concentration led to too long hydraulic retention time, thus resulting in a low reactor efficiency. Additionally, it was observed that salt, protein, polysaccharide and humic acid were all accumulated in the reactor, which was not conducive to stable long-term operation. Based on the characteristics of membrane fouling, salt accumulation and AnOMBR performance, the optimal DS of 1 M NaCl solution was selected.

Comparison of novel functionalized nanofiber forward osmosis membranes for application in antibacterial activity and TRGs rejection

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are serious pollutants in municipal sewage treatment plants and may cause significant harm to ecological systems, microbial fouling is also inevitable in membrane process. Herein, novel forward osmosis (FO) membranes made of electrospun nanofibers (TFN0) and further impregnated with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) (TFN1) nanoparticles and titanium dioxide/silver composite nanoparticles (TiO₂/AgNPs) (TFN2). The FO membranes were used to compare the antimicrobial performance and rejection of tetracycline-resistant genes (TRGs). Characterizations revealed that the TiO₂/AgNPs were evenly scattered in the polysulfone (PSf) nanofibers and resulted in a TFN2 membrane that exhibited excellent physicochemical properties, filtration, and antibiofouling performance in real wastewater. The cell viability analysis revealed that the antibacterial effect of the TFN2 membranes was significantly better than that of TFN1, as indicated by about 65 % of E. coli cells killed after contact with the TFN2 membrane. TFN2 membranes had greater rejection rates of TRB and TRGs than TFN1. The TRG permeation rates of the TFN2 membrane in the FO mode (active layer facing the feed solution) were 39.62 % and 33.02 % lower than the TFN0 and TFN1 membranes, respectively. FO membranes modified by the TiO₂/AgNPs nanocomposites hold promise to remove ARGs and pathogens from wastewater treatment plant effluents.

Volume reduction and water reclamation of reverse osmosis concentrate from coal chemical industry by forward osmosis with an osmotic backwash strategy

Coal chemical industry (CCI) generally utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) for water reclamation, which generates a highly concentrated stream containing refractory organic substances and high-concentration total dissolved solids (TDS). To address this issue, the present work focuses on volume reduction of RO concentrate (ROC) produced from CCI by forward osmosis (FO). We investigated the effects of membrane orientation and draw solution (DS) concentration on FO performance. Foulant removal was tested by using chemical cleaning, physical cleaning and osmotic backwash (OB). AL-FS (active layer facing feed solution) mode outcompeted AL-DS (active layer facing draw solution) mode, achieving a flux of 26.4 LMH, 92.5% water reclamation and energy consumption of 0.050 kWh·m^-3 with 4 M NaCl as DS. The FO process was able to reject >98% SO₄ ^2-, Mg²⁺and Ca²⁺, 92-98% Si and 33-55% total organic carbon (TOC). Ten-cycle (10 × 20 h) accelerated fouling test demonstrated approximately 30% flux decline in association with Si-containing foulants, which could be removed almost completely through OB with 97.1% flux recovery. This study provides a proof-of-concept demonstration of FO for volume reduction and water reclamation of ROC produced from CCI, making the treatment of ROC more efficient and more energy effective.

Unlocking the application potential of forward osmosis through integrated/hybrid process

Study of forward osmosis (FO) has been increasing steadily over recent years with applications mainly focusing on desalination and wastewater treatment processes. The working mechanism of FO lies in the natural movement of water between two streams with different osmotic pressure, which makes it useful in concentrating or diluting solutions. FO has rarely been operated as a stand-alone process. Instead, FO processes often appear in a hybrid or integrated form where FO is combined with other treatment technologies to achieve better overall process performance and cost savings. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review on the need for hybridization/integration for FO membrane processes, with emphasis given to process enhancement, draw solution regeneration, and pretreatment for FO fouling mitigation. In general, integrated/hybrid FO processes can reduce the membrane fouling propensity; prepare the solution suitable for subsequent value-added uses and production of renewable energy; lower the costs associated with energy consumption; enhance the quality of treated water; and enable the continuous operation of FO through the regeneration of draw solution. The future potential of FO lies in the success of how it can be hybridized or integrated with other technologies to minimize its own shortcomings, while enhancing the overall performance.

Forward osmosis membrane processes for wastewater bioremediation: Research needs

Increasing research and development works have been made to develop forward osmosis (FO) processes as a cost-effective substitute for energy intensive water vacuum suction facility in submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) applications. Perceived to be a spontaneous water driven process without external applied pressures, the FO has been applied in lab and pilot scales for wastewater bioremediation. This paper reviewed the state-of-the-art developments on the FO unit, the process, and ways of enhancing process performance, particularly on the aspects of flux enhancement, flow resistance reduction, and draw solute with low reverse salt diffusion, which are relevant to enhanced osmotic MBR performance. The perspective to realize the use of FO processes in revision of currently existing energy intensive osmotic MBR processes is discussed with research needs being highlighted.

A Brief Review of Anaerobic Digestion of Algae for Bioenergy

The potential of algal biomass as a source of liquid and gaseous biofuels has been the subject of considerable research over the past few decades, with researchers strongly agreeing that algae have the potential of becoming a viable aquatic energy crop with a higher energy potential compared to that from either terrestrial biomass or municipal solid waste. However, neither microalgae nor seaweed are currently cultivated solely for energy purposes due to the high costs of harvesting, concentrating and drying. Anaerobic digestion of algal biomass could theoretically reduce costs associated with drying wet biomass before processing, but practical yields of biogas from digestion of many algae are substantially below the theoretical maximum. New processing methods are needed to reduce costs and increase the net energy balance. This review examines the biochemical and structural properties of seaweeds and of microalgal biomass that has been produced as part of the treatment of wastewater, and discusses some of the significant hurdles and recent initiatives for producing biogas from their anaerobic digestion.
