Energy generation from bioelectrochemical techniques: Concepts, reactor configurations and modeling approaches

The process industries play a significant role in boosting the economy of any nation. However, poor management in several industries has been posing worrisome threats to an environment that was previously immaculate. As a result, the untreated waste and wastewater discarded by many industries contain abundant organic matter and other toxic chemicals. It is more likely that they disrupt the proper functioning of the water bodies by perturbing the sustenance of many species of flora and fauna occupying the different trophic levels. The simultaneous threats to human health and the environment, as well as the global energy problem, have encouraged a number of nations to work on the development of renewable energy sources. Hence, bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have attracted the attention of several stakeholders throughout the world on many counts. The bioelectricity generated from BESs has been recognized as a clean fuel. Besides, this technology has advantages such as the direct conversion of substrate to electricity, and efficient operation at ambient and even low temperatures. An overview of the BESs, its important operating parameters, bioremediation of industrial waste and wastewaters, biodegradation kinetics, and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling to describe substrate removal/elimination and energy production of the BESs are discussed. When considering the potential for use in the industrial sector, certain technical issues of BES design and the principal microorganisms/biocatalysts involved in the degradation of waste are also highlighted in this review.

Performance evaluation and energy potential analysis of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) in the treatment of simulated milk wastewater

An anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was employed as primary treatment unit for anaerobic treatment of simulated wastewater to produce high effluent quality. A lab scale hollow fiber membrane was used to scrutinize the performance of AnMBR as a potential treatment system for simulated milk wastewater and analyze its energy recovery potential. The 15 L bioreactor was operated continuously at mesophilic conditions (35 °C) with a pH constant of 7.0. The membrane flux was in the range of 9.6-12.6 L/m². h. The different organic loading rates (OLRs) of 1.61, 3.28, 5.01, and 8.38 g-COD/L/d, of simulated milk wastewater, were fed to the reactor and the biogas production rate was analyzed, respectively. The results revealed that the COD removal efficiencies of 99.54 ± 0.001% were achieved at the OLR of 5.01 gCOD/L/d. The highest methane yield was found to be at OLR of 1.61 gCOD/L/d at HRT of 30 d with the value of 0.33 ± 0.01 L-CH₄/gCOD. Moreover, based on the analysis of energy balance in the AnMBR system, it was found that energy is positive at all the given HRTs. The net energy production (NEP) ranged from 2.594 to 3.268 kJ/gCOD, with a maximum NEP value of 3.268 kJ/gCOD at HRT 10 d HRT. Bioenergy recovery with the maximum energy ratio, of 4.237, was achieved with an HRT of 5 d. The study suggests a sizable energy saving with the anaerobic membrane process.

Effects of submicron magnetite particles on granulation of flocculent sludge and process stability in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor

Promoting direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) with conductive additives is considered a promising approach to enhance methanogenesis. This study investigated the effects of adding submicron magnetite particles on sludge granulation and methanogenic performance in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors inoculated with flocculent sludge. The reactor supplemented with magnetite was more stable and resilient than the no-magnetite control, with higher degree of granulation (up to 26.6-fold) and biomass retention. Magnetite addition to unstable reactors improved the methane yield in both reactors (1.2-1.3-fold). Electroactive Deltaproteobacteria bacteria, including Geobacter and Syntrophobacter, were enriched in the presence of magnetite. Methanogenic functional genes involved in DIET-based syntrophy were more abundant under magnetite-supplemented conditions. However, the improvement of methanogenic performance and granulation was limited, and inducing the self-embedment of magnetite into mature sludge granules rather than granulating flocculent sludge with magnetite appears to be a better strategy for engineering DIET in anaerobic granular sludge systems.

Experimental and Mathematical Investigation of Anaerobic Granulate Density via Settling Velocity

The objective of this study was to determine the density of anaerobic granules on different heights of a full-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed reactor. The density was defined through the settling velocities of anaerobic granules, measured in a full-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed reactor. In this study, granular density was calculated with the measured settling velocities and developed mathematical model. The developed mathematical model is based on the Stokes model. In the experiment, granules were taken from different heights of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed reactor, from 0.6 to 7.6 m. The granules’ diameters varied between 1 and 5 mm. The granules were taken from six different heights through the reactor. The settling velocity of the active granules (with gas in the granule pore and on the surface of the granule) was measured first. After the active granules’ settling velocity measurement, the granules were placed in a vortex to obtain degassed granules (granules without any gas in the pores or on the surface), for which the settling velocities were also measured later. It is shown that granules’ densities at different heights are independent of the reactor height.

Multi-scale analysis of the foaming mechanism in anaerobic digestion of food waste: From physicochemical parameter, microbial community to metabolite response

Foaming is a key issue that threatens the efficient and stable operation of the anaerobic digestion process. This study introduced three disturbances to induce foaming and explored the responses of physicochemical parameters, microbial communities, and metabolites to reveal the foaming mechanism. Under the three disturbance conditions, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)-related parameters are significantly positively correlated with foam height, and EPS may cause foam by lowering the surface tension. Microorganisms that are more tolerant to high acid or high ammonia stress environments were identified after foaming, and they could resist the stress environment by producing more EPS. The up-regulated expression of sphingomyelin or ceramide was discovered after foaming, involved in the signal molecular transduction process of cell apoptosis or necrosis, which might be related to EPS production. Pantothenic acid involved in pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis pathways was down-regulated expression after foaming, which might be related to the hindered degradation of EPS. The response of multi-scale parameters in the foaming process shows that EPS is the key factor in foaming events.

Enhanced treatment of organic matters in starch wastewater through Bacillus subtilis strain with polyethylene glycol-modified polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate hydrogel microspheres

Starch wastewater is a wide range of environmental issues with organic pollutants. A high efficiency and stability hydrogel-organic degradation system was designed via Bacillus Subtilis with Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel microspheres. Bacillus subtilis was immobilized on the surface or inside of PEG-modified PVA/SA hydrogels microspheres via physical adsorption. Results showed PEG-modified PVA/SA microspheres had an effect of adsorption on Bacillus subtilis with enhancing bearing rate to 54.22% compared to the blank control group. The effect of microspheres on degradation was remarkable in simulation starch wastewater with a maximum COD removal rate of 93.35% and compared in reality starch wastewater with 90.02% under the optimal condition of pH = 6, 35℃, 20% dosage, 180 rpm. This novel biological method on starch wastewater enhanced tolerance of microorganisms and degradation effect, reflecting safety, effectiveness, and economy with great significance to environmental protection.

Formation and characterization of conductive magnetite-embedded granules in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating dairy wastewater

Promoting direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) with conductive additives has proved effective in improving anaerobic digestion performance and stability. However, its application is limited by the need to replenish the washout loss of conductive materials. This study reports the formation of conductive magnetite-embedded granular sludge and its long-term influence on the performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors treating dairy wastewater. The magnetite-supplemented reactor maintained better performance than the no-magnetite control, with greater sludge settling and electron transport activity, throughout the 192-d experiment at increasing organic loading rates (1.2-8.5 g chemical oxygen demand/L·d). The abundance of electroactive microbes also remained higher in the magnetite-supplemented reactor. The results suggest that DIET-based electric syntrophy was promoted in the magnetite-embedded granules. This study is the first to demonstrate the self-embedment of submicron conductive material into granular sludge and its benefits. These findings offer a new approach to enhancing anaerobic granular sludge systems.

The performance of simultaneous partial nitritation, anammox, denitrification, and COD oxidation (SNADCO) method in the treatment of digested effluent of fish processing wastewater

The simultaneous partial nitritation, anammox, denitrification, and COD oxidation (SNADCO) method was successfully carried out in an air-lift moving bed biofilm reactor (AL-MBBR) with cylinders carriers for the treatment of digested fish processing wastewater (FPW). Synthetic wastewater was used as substrate at stage 1. It changed into the digested FPW with dilution variation in order to increase the nitrogen and COD loading rates. With influent concentration of NH₄⁺-N of 909 ± 101 mg-N/L and COD of 731 ± 26 mg/L, the nitrogen removal efficiency was 86.8% (nitrogen loading rate of 1.21 g-TN/L/d) and the COD removal efficiency was 50.5% (COD loading rate at 0.98 g-COD/L/d). This study showed that the process has the advantages in treating the real high ammonia concentration of digested wastewater containing organic compounds. The nitritation and anammox route was predominant in nitrogen removal, while COD oxidation and microbe proliferation played the main role in COD removal.

Deciphering the floatation reversibility of anammox sludge: A balance between sludge rheological intensity and external hydraulic shearing

Sludge floatation is inevitable in anammox granular reactors, which reduces the effective granules participating in anammox reaction and weakens the robust operation of anammox reactors. However, so far, the involved floatation mechanisms as well as the floatation mitigation measurements have not been well proposed. In this study, floating sludge (including irreversibly floating sludge (FS_I) and reversibly floating sludge (FS_R)) and settled granule sludge (SGS) were collected from an anammox expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor and compared in terms of morphological, physical, chemical and microbial properties. The particle size ranked FS_I > SGS > FS_R, and cavities were distinctly observed in FS_I due to the gas pockets and cell lysis. Rheological measurements revealed that the storage modulus (represent intensity of sludge) of FS_I and SGS were comparable, both of which were approximately1.4 times greater than that of FS_R. High storage modulus indicated that the hydraulic shear force in the EGSB was not strong enough to destroy FS_I and release the gases trapped in gas pocket, resulting in the irreversible floatation of FS_I. Whereas, the dinitrogen gases adhered onto FS_R were readily stripped from FS_R under hydraulic shearing, which contributed to their reversible floatation property. It is concluded that sludge floatation is resulted from the gas accumulation or gas adhesion onto the sludges, while the sludge floatation reversibility depends on the sludge intensity and hydraulic shear force. Our findings elucidate the floatation properties of anammox sludge via rheological analysis, which will contribute to the proper sludge floatation control and facilitate the optimization of anammox granule fluidization in EGSB reactor.

Valorisation of Starch Wastewater by Anaerobic Fermentation

Starch production is mainly focused on feedstocks such as corn, wheat and potato in the EU, whereas cassava, rice, and other feedstocks are utilised worldwide. In starch production, a high amount of wastewater is generated, which accumulates from different process steps such as washing, steeping, starch refining, saccharification and derivatisation. Valorisation of these wastewaters can help to improve the environmental impact as well as the economics of starch production. Anaerobic fermentation is a promising approach, and this review gives an overview of the different utilisation concepts outlined in the literature and the state of the technology. Among bioenergy recovery processes, biogas technology is widely applied at the industrial scale, whereas biohydrogen production is used at the research stage. Starch wastewater can also be used for the production of bulk chemicals such as acetone, ethanol, butanol or lactic acids by anaerobic microbes.

Modeling the Performance of Full-Scale Anaerobic Biochemical System Treating Deinking Pulp Wastewater Based on Modified Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1

The deinking pulp (DIP) is a main resource for paper making, and the wastewater from DIP process needs to be treated. Anaerobic biochemical technique has been widely applied in DIP wastewater treatment, due to the remarkable capability in reducing high chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this study, a mathematical simulation model was established to investigate the performance of a full-scale anaerobic biochemical system for treating DIP wastewater. The model was based on Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1), which was modified according to the specific anaerobic digestion process for DIP wastewater treatment. The hydrodynamic behavior of a full-scale anaerobic biochemical system was considered in this model. The characteristics of the influent DIP wastewater were assessed, and then, the substrate COD proportion was divided successfully for the necessity of ADM1 applying. The Monte Carlo technique was implemented to distinguish the most sensitive parameters that influenced the model output indicators comprising effluent COD and biogas production. The sensitive parameters were estimated and optimized. The optimized value of k_{_m_pro} is 12.02, K_{_S_pro} is 0.35, k_{_m_ac} is 4.26, K_{_S_ac} is 0.26, k_{_m_h2} is 16.62, and K_{_S_h2} is 3.21 × 10^–5. The model was calibrated with 150 days operation values measured in the field. The subsequent 100 days on-site values were used to validate the model, and the results obtained by the simulations were in good agreement. This study provides a meaningful and theoretical model guidance for full-scale wastewater anaerobic biochemical treatment simulation.

Up-Flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) Technology for Energy Recovery: A Review on State-of-the-Art and Recent Technological Advances

Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor belongs to high-rate systems, able to perform anaerobic reaction at reduced hydraulic retention time, if compared to traditional digesters. In this review, the most recent advances in UASB reactor applications are critically summarized and discussed, with outline on the most critical aspects for further possible future developments. Beside traditional anaerobic treatment of soluble and biodegradable substrates, research is actually focusing on the treatment of refractory and slowly degradable matrices, thanks to an improved understanding of microbial community composition and reactor hydrodynamics, together with utilization of powerful modeling tools. Innovative approaches include the use of UASB reactor for nitrogen removal, as well as for hydrogen and volatile fatty acid production. Co-digestion of complementary substrates available in the same territory is being extensively studied to increase biogas yield and provide smooth continuous operations in a circular economy perspective. Particular importance is being given to decentralized treatment, able to provide electricity and heat to local users with possible integration with other renewable energies. Proper pre-treatment application increases biogas yield, while a successive post-treatment is needed to meet required effluent standards, also from a toxicological perspective. An increased full-scale application of UASB technology is desirable to achieve circular economy and sustainability scopes, with efficient biogas exploitation, fulfilling renewable energy targets and green-house gases emission reduction, in particular in tropical countries, where limited reactor heating is required.
