Screening of the dominant Chlorella pyrenoidosa for biofilm attached culture and feed production while treating swine wastewater

Phase inversion regulable bigels co-stabilized by Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein and beeswax: In-vitro digestion and food 3D printing

Algal proteins are an emerging source of functional foods. Herein, Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein (CPP)/xanthan gum-based hydrogels (HG) and beeswax-gelled oleogels (OG) are adopted to fabricate bigels. The phase inversion of bigels can be regulated by the ratio of OG and HG: As the OG increased, bigels turn from OG-in-HG (OG/HG) to a semicontinuous state and then HG-in-OG (HG/OG). In OG/HG bigels (OG ≤ 50 %), hydrophilic CPP acts as the emulsifier at the interface of OG and HG, while beeswax emulsifies the system in HG/OG bigels (OG = 80 %). A semicontinuous bigel appears during the transition between HG/OG and OG/HG. The increase of OG can enhance the viscoelasticity, hardness, adhesiveness, chewiness, and thermal stability. OG/HG bigels exhibit stronger thixotropic recovery and oil-holding capacity than HG/OG bigels. In the in-vitro digestion and food 3D printing, the high specific surface area and the highest thixotropic recovery caused by the emulsion structure of the OG/HG bigel (OG = 50 %) are conducive to the release of free fatty acids and molding of 3D-printed objects, respectively. This study provides a new approach to structure the gelled water-oil system with CPP and helps to develop edible algal proteins-based multiphase systems in food engineering or pharmacy.

Principles, challenges, and optimization of indigenous microalgae-bacteria consortium for sustainable swine wastewater treatment

Indigenous microalgae-bacteria consortium (IMBC) offers significant advantages for swine wastewater (SW) treatment including enhanced adaptability and resource recovery. In this review, the approaches for enriching IMBC both in situ and ex situ were comprehensively described, followed by symbiotic mechanisms for IMBC which involve metabolic cross-feeding and signal transmission. Strategies for enhancing treatment efficiencies of SW-originated IMBC were then introduced, including improving SW quality, optimizing system operating conditions, and adjusting microbial activities. Recommendations for maximizing treatment efficiencies were particularly proposed using a decision tree approach. Moreover, removal/recovery mechanisms for typical pollutants in SW using IMBC were critically discussed. Ultimately, a technical route termed SW-IMBC-Crop-Pig was proposed, to achieve a closed-loop economy for pig farms by integrating SW treatment with crop cultivation. This review provides a deeper understanding of the mechanism and strategies for IMBC's resource recovery from SW.

Strategies for livestock wastewater treatment and optimised nutrient recovery using microalgal-based technologies

Global sustainable development faces several challenges in addressing the needs of a growing population. Regarding food industries, the heightening pressure to meet these needs has resulted in increased waste generation. Thus, recognising these wastes as valuable resources is crucial to integrating sustainable models into current production systems. For instance, the current 24 billion tons of nutrient-rich livestock wastewater (LW) generated yearly could be recovered and valorised via biological uptake through microalgal biomass. Microalgae-based livestock wastewater treatment (MbLWT) has emerged as an effective technology for nutrient recovery, specifically targeting carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. However, the viability and efficacy of these systems rely on the characteristics of LW, including organic matter and ammonium concentration, content of suspended solids, and microbial load. Thus, this systematic literature review aims to provide guidance towards implementing an integral MbLWT system for nutrient control and recovery, discussing several pre-treatments used in literature to overcome the challenges regarding LW as a suitable media for microalgae cultivation.

Eco-friendly cultivation of microalgae using a horizontal twin layer system for treatment of real solid waste leachate

Solid waste leachate (SWL) requires dilution with water to offset the negative effects of high nutrient concentration and organic compounds for its microalgae-based treatment. Among attached cultivation systems, twin layer is a technology in which limited information is available on treatment of high strength wastewater using microalgae. Moreover, widespread application of twin layer technology is limited due to cost of substrate and source layer used. In the present study, potential of Scenedesmus sp. for the treatment of SWL was assessed on horizontal twin layer system (HTLS). Novel and cost-effective substrate layers were tested as attachment material. Wetland treated municipal wastewater (WMW) was used to prepare SWL dilutions viz, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% SWL. Recycled printing paper showed maximum biomass productivity of 5.19 g m-2 d-1. Among all the SWL dilutions, Scenedesmus sp. achieved maximum growth of 103.05 g m-2 in 5% SWL which was 16% higher than WMW alone. The maximum removal rate of NH4+ -N, TKN, and PO43- P was obtained in 20% SWL which was 1371, 1588 and 153 mg m-2 d-1 respectively. Varying concentrations of nutrients in different SWL dilutions significantly affected lipid biosynthesis, with enhanced productivity of 2.28 g m-2 d-1 achieved in 5% SWL compared to 0.97 g m-2 d-1 in 20% SWL. Hence, it can be concluded that 5% SWL dilution was good for biomass and lipid production, while the highest nutrient removal rates were obtained at 20% SWL mainly attributed to biotic and abiotic processes. Based on these results HTLS can be a promising technology for pilot scale to explore industrialized application of wastewater treatment and algal production.

Effects of staged multiple phytohormones application on capillary-driven attached Chlorella sp. biofilm

Comparing with single phytohormone application, applying multiple phytohormones to microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems can offer more extensive growth-promoting and stress-protecting effects for microalgae, yet the advantage of stress-relieving salicylic acid (SA) under combined phytohormones application scenario has not been exploited. Employing the improved capillary-driven attached microalgae culturing device (CD-PBR) previously used for single phytohormone application, this study compared the effects of mixed and single phytohormone(s) addition under as low as 10-7 M dosage. In order to make the best of SA for its stress-relieving property, postponed SA addition combined with applying other phytohormone(s) at the beginning of microalgae cultivation was also investigated. Combination of 10-6 M 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) with 10-7 M SA was sufficient for enhancing growth-promoting effects and anti-oxidative responses for attached Chlorella sp., while indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) addition was unnecessary. Combination of 6-BA addition at the beginning while postponed SA addition on Day 4 could further sustain such beneficial effects, while removing up to 99.7% total nitrogen (TN) and 97.9% total phosphorus (TP) from the bulk liquid. These results provided innovative strategies on mixed phytohormones addition for microalgae.

Extraction, functionality, and applications of Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein/peptide

Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) has been widely used in commercial food and feed production for numerous years. Its high protein content and cost-effectiveness make it an attractive source of novel protein. With a focus on sustainable development and the search for green natural products, current research is dedicated to maximizing the utilization of C. pyrenoidosa protein (CPP) and peptide. Various techniques, such as the use of ionic liquids, freeze-thawing, ultrasonication, enzyme digest, microwaving are employed in the extraction of CPP. The extracted CPP has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and bacteriostatic properties. It can also stimulate immune regulation, prevent cardiovascular disease, protect red blood cells, and even be used in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, CPP has shown some potential in combating obesity. Additionally, CPP is being explored in three-dimensional (3D) printing applications, particularly for the creation of biological scaffolds. It is also anticipated to play a role in 3D food printing. This review aimed to supply a comprehensive summary of CPP and C. pyrenoidosa peptide extraction methods, their functions, and practical applications in various industries. By doing so, it seeks to underpin subsequent research efforts, highlight current research limitations, and identify future research directions in this field.

Potential of Porous Substrate Bioreactors for Removal of Pollutants from Wastewater Using Microalgae

Porous substrate bioreactors (PSBRs) are a new technology to grow microalgae immobilized in a dense culture and solve some problems linked to suspended cultivation. During recent years, this technology has been used in laboratory and pilot setups in different fields of environmental biotechnology, such as wastewater treatment. The aim of this short review is to introduce the PSBR technology, summarize the results obtained in removing some pollutants from wastewater, provide an assessment of the potential of PSBRs for wastewater treatment, and the subsequent use of the algal biomass for other purposes.

Non-immersed zigzag microalgae biofilm overcoming high turbidity and ammonia of wastewater for muti-pollutants bio-purification

Biological treatment that utilizes microalgae technology has demonstrated outstanding efficacy in the wastewater purification and nutrients recovery. However, the high turbidity of the digested piggery wastewater (DPW) leads to serious light attenuation and the culture mode of suspended microalgae results in a huge landing area. Thus, to overcome light attenuation in DPW, a non-immersed titled zigzag microalgae biofilm was constructed by attaching it onto a porous cotton cloth. As a result, the light could directly irradiate microalgae biofilm that attached on both sides of the cotton cloth, and the microalgal biofilm area was up to 6 m2 per bioreactor landing area. When the non-immersed zigzag microalgae biofilm bioreactor (N-Z-MBP) was used to treat wastewater with an ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration of 362 mg L-1, the NH4+-N was completely removed in just 5 days and the maximum growth rate of microalgae biofilm reached 7.02 g m-2 d-1. After 21 days of long-term sequencing batch operation for the N-Z-MBP, the biomass density of the biofilm reached 52 g m-2 and remained at this high value for the next 14 days. Most importantly, during the 35 days' running, the NH4+ -N maximum removal rate of single batch reached up to 65 mg L-1 d-1 and its concentration in the effluent was always below the discharge standard value (80 mg L-1 form GB18596-2001 of China) and total phosphorus was completely removed in each batch. Furthermore, the biomass concentration of microalgae cells in the effluent of the N-Z-MBP was almost zero, indicating that the non-submerged biofilm achieved in situ separation of microalgae from the wastewater. This work suggests that the N-Z-MBP can effectively purify DPW over a long period, providing a possible strategy to treat wastewater with high ammonia nitrogen and high turbidity.

Stimulating carbon and nitrogen metabolism of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to treat aquaculture wastewater and produce high-quality protein in plate photobioreactors

Wastewater treatment by microalgae is the economical and environmentally friendly strategy, but is still challenged with the strict discharge standards and valuable biomass exploitations. The carbon and nitrogen metabolism of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was improved by the red LED light and starch addition to treat Tilapia aquaculture wastewater (T-AW) and produce protein simultaneously in a plate photobioreactor. The red LED light was applied to improve the nutrient removals at an outdoor temperature, but the concentrations except total nitrogen did not satisfy the discharge standards. After starch addition, the removal efficiencies of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and total ammonia nitrogen were 85.15, 96.96, 88.53, and 98.01 % in a flat-plate photobioreactor, respectively, which met the discharge standards and the protein production reached 0.60 g/L. At a molecular level, the metabolic flux and transcriptome analyses showed that red light promoted carbon flux of the Embden-Meyerhof-Pranas pathway and tricarboxylic cycle, and upregulated the levels of genes encoding α-amylase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate dehydrogenase, nitrate transporter, and ammonium transporter, which facilitated nutrients removal and provided nitrogen sources for protein biosynthesis. The harvesting C. pyrenoidosa possessed the 62 % essential amino acids and great lipid composition for biofuels. This study provided a new orientation for outdoor wastewater treatment and protein production by collaboratively regulating the carbon and nitrogen metabolism of microalgae.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment: Mechanisms, challenges, recent advances, and future prospects

The rapid expansion of both the global economy and the human population has led to a shortage of water resources suitable for direct human consumption. As a result, water remediation will inexorably become the primary focus on a global scale. Microalgae can be grown in various types of wastewaters (WW). They have a high potential to remove contaminants from the effluents of industries and urban areas. This review focuses on recent advances on WW remediation through microalgae cultivation. Attention has already been paid to microalgae-based wastewater treatment (WWT) due to its low energy requirements, the strong ability of microalgae to thrive under diverse environmental conditions, and the potential to transform WW nutrients into high-value compounds. It turned out that microalgae-based WWT is an economical and sustainable solution. Moreover, different types of toxins are removed by microalgae through biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation processes. Examples are toxins from agricultural runoffs and textile and pharmaceutical industrial effluents. Microalgae have the potential to mitigate carbon dioxide and make use of the micronutrients that are present in the effluents. This review paper highlights the application of microalgae in WW remediation and the remediation of diverse types of pollutants commonly present in WW through different mechanisms, simultaneous resource recovery, and efficient microalgae-based co-culturing systems along with bottlenecks and prospects.

Advancement on mixed microalgal-bacterial cultivation systems for nitrogen and phosphorus recoveries from wastewater to promote sustainable bioeconomy

Biological wastewater treatment is a promising and environmentally friendly method that utilises living microorganisms to remediate water and enable recovery or conversion of contaminants into valuable products. For many decades, microalgae and cyanobacteria, photosynthetic living microorganisms, have been explored extensively for wastewater bioremediation. They can be used for recovering valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous from secondary effluents and capable of transforming those nutrients into marketable products such as biofuels, biofertilisers, nutraceutical, and pigments for promoting a Bio-Circular Green economy. In recent years, there has been a shift towards mixing compatible microalgae with bacteria, which is inspired by their natural symbiotic relationships to increase nitrogen and phosphorus recoveries. With this enhanced bioremediation, recovery of polluted wastes can be intensified and higher biomass quality (with high nutrient density) can be achieved. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art of mixed microalgal-bacterial cultivating systems. A comprehensive comparison of existing studies that used Chlorella species as microalgae in various mixed microalgal-bacterial cultivating systems (suspension, biofilm, and immobilisation) for nitrogen and phosphorus recoveries from wastewater is conducted. Key technical challenges such as balancing microalgae and bacteria species, pH regulation, light distribution, biomass harvesting, and biomass conversion are also discussed. From the data comparisons among different cultivation systems, it has been suggested that immobilisation appears to require less amount of operational light compared to the suspended and biofilm-based systems for similar nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies.

Microalgae-driven swine wastewater biotreatment: Nutrient recovery, key microbial community and current challenges

As a promising technology, the microalgae-driven strategy can achieve environmentally sustainable and economically viable swine wastewater treatment. Currently, most microalgae-based research focuses on remediation improvement and biomass accumulation, while information on the removal mechanisms and dominant microorganisms is emerging but still limited. In this review, the major removal mechanisms of pollutants and pathogenic bacteria are systematically discussed. In addition, the bacterial and microalgal community during the swine wastewater treatment process are summarized. In general, Blastomonas, Flavobacterium, Skermanella, Calothrix and Sedimentibacter exhibit a high relative abundance. In contrast to the bacterial community, the microalgal community does not change much during swine wastewater treatment. Additionally, the effects of various parameters (characteristics of swine wastewater and cultivation conditions) on microalgal growth and current challenges in the microalgae-driven biotreatment process are comprehensively introduced. This review stresses the need to integrate bacterial and microalgal ecology information into the conventional design of full-scale swine wastewater treatment systems and operations. Herein, future research needs are also proposed, which will facilitate the development and operation of a more efficient microalgae-based swine wastewater treatment process.

Rhizopus oryzae fermentation wastewater nutrient removal coupling protein fodder production by employing Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The scenario was to investigate feasibilities of employing Chlorella pyrenoidosa for Rhizopus oryzae fermentation wastewater nutrient removal coupling protein fodder production. Results stated that TN, TP, NH₃-N, COD, BOD removal reached 99.79%, 94.70%, 98.80%, 97.60%, 99.60% to acquire discharge permit under fed-batch manipulation, whilst the peaked protein yield (19.94 g/L) was 6.04-fold more than batch manipulation. Rhizopus oryzae fermentation wastewater feeding C. pyrenoidosa was praised as high-quality protein not only with 26.78% essential amino acids and essential amino acids/nonessential amino acids value of 0.84 but also pathogenic bacteria and heavy metal loads complying with fodder standards. In vitro digestibility of dry matter, protein, lipid, and starch achieving 80.07%, 92.13%, 95.93%, 91.9% and bioavailability of polypeptides, triglycerides, free fatty acids, and oligosaccharides displaying 98.67%, 87.12%, 93.86%, 30.21%, which were roughly-equivalent to corn/soybean fodder. The findings formed exemplifications in utilizing other microalgal systems for wastewater nutrient removal coupling chemicals production.

Sulfur heterogeneity: A non-negligible factor in manipulating growth and lipid accumulation of Scenedesmus obliquus at a relatively high ratio of carbon to nitrogen

Algal biodiesel has been becoming a focus in the field of bioenergy worldwide. In this study, effects of heterogeneous sulfur (SO₄^2-, SO₃^2- and S^2-) on growth and lipid accumulation of Scenedesmus obliquus cultured in wastewater with a C/N ratio of 30 were investigated, respectively. The results shown that SO₄^2-, the optimal sulfur source, could trigger cell growth in a concentration-dependent manner. However, SO₃^2- was superior to the others in boosting carbon uptake of cells, which was subject to NH₄⁺-N concentration. Only SO₄^2- could simultaneously increase lipid content and productivity of cells with a dominant component of oleic acid (C18:1n9c) occupying approximately 40% in fatty acid profile. Additionally, the genes encoding enzymes such as CDIPT, ADPRM, DPP1, pmtA and BTA1 involved in the uppermost lipid-related pathway (glycerophospholipid metabolism) were identified facing different sulfur source regardless of the concentration changes. These findings may facilitate nutrition management efforts to enhance microalgae-based biofuel production.

Bifunctional lighting/supporting substrate for microalgal photosynthetic biofilm to bio-remove ammonia nitrogen from high turbidity wastewater

Treatment technologies based on microalgal biofilms have an enormous potential for dealing with water pollution because they can efficiently redirect nutrients from wastewater to renewable biomass feedstock. However, poor light transmittance is caused by the high turbidity of wastewater, which hinders the commercial application of microalgal biofilm-based wastewater treatment. Here, a bifunctional substrate with lighting and biofilm support functions was constructed using a light guide plate. In a biofilm photobioreactor (bPBR) with a bifunctional lighting/supporting substrate (BL/S substrate), light can directly irradiate the biofilm to avoid attenuation by the turbid wastewater. Direct irradiation of light onto the biofilm led to a 93.0% enhancement of microalgal photoconversion efficiency when compared to that of a supporting substrate without lighting (SO substrate). Meanwhile, the maximum growth rate of the microalgal biofilm on the BL/S substrate was 8.7 g m^-2 d^-1, which was increased by 60.3%. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) from the digested wastewater contributed by the microalgal biofilm reached 22.6 mg L^-1 d^-1, which was higher than the previously reported that of NH₄⁺-N from turbid digested wastewater by the biofilms. Furthermore, the BL/S substrate can facilitate the secretion of abundant extracellular polymeric substrates, which results in the stable adhesion of the biofilm onto the BL/S substrate. The optical density of the microalgae cells at the outlet of the bPBR with BL/S substrate was below 0.1, which was 94% lower than that of the bPBR with the SO substrate. The results indicated the BL/S substrate may avoid the loss of microalgal biomass, and almost all biomass could be easily harvested from the biofilm for algae-based biomass resources. Consequently, this study can offer a promising alternative with efficient treatment technologies for wastewater with high turbidity.

Freshwater Microalgae as Promising Food Sources: Nutritional and Functional Properties

A number of researchers have predicted that the current food crisis is predicted to worsen in 2050. The prediction of this crisis is aligned with climate change causing increases in some basic foodstuff prices. Therefore, everyone should prepare to consume alternative foods at an early stage. Alternative foods have been widely developed, one of which involves microalgae. However, the type of microalgae produced by some countries on a large scale consists of only oceanic/seawater microalgae. This will have an impact on and hinder development in countries that do not have these resources. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the use of microalgae derived from freshwater. Unfortunately, freshwater microalgae are still rarely investigated for use as alternative foods. However, there is considerable potential to utilize freshwater microalgae, and these algae are very abundant and diverse. In terms of nutritional properties, compared to oceanic / seawater microalgae, freshwater microalgae contain nearly the same protein and amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, carbohydrates, and vitamins. There are even more species whose composition is similar to those currently consumed foods, such as beef, chicken, beans, eggs, and corn. In addition to dietary properties, freshwater microalgae also have functional properties, due to the presence of pigments, sterols, fatty acids, and polyphenols. Given the potential of freshwater microalgae, these aquatic resources need to be developed for potential use as future food resources.

Toxification metabolism and treatment strategy of the chiral triazole fungicide prothioconazole in water

Toxification metabolism of the chiral triazole fungicide prothioconazole in the environment has attracted an increasing amount of attention. To better understand the fate of prothioconazole in aquatic ecosystems and develop a treatment strategy, the stereoselective toxicity, degradation and bioconcentration of prothioconazole were investigated in water with algae at the enantiomer level. There was remarkable enantioselectivity against Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and the highly toxic S-prothioconazole was preferentially degraded with enantiomer fraction values ranging from 0.5 to 0.74. Metabolism experiment results showed that the parent compound was quickly eliminated driven by biodegradation and abiotic degradation (hydrolysis, photolysis). Fourteen phase I and two phase II metabolites involved in the reactions of hydroxylation, methylation, dechlorinating, desulfuration, dehydration and conjugation were identified, where prothioconazole-desthio was the major metabolite. The highly toxic metabolite prothioconazole-desthio persisted in water and hardly degraded with or without C. pyrenoidosa. Furthermore, the reaction system including 1 mg of cobalt coated in nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes and 0.156 g of peroxymonosulfate was used to eliminate prothioconazole-desthio. Approximately 96% prothioconazole-desthio was eliminated and transformed to low toxicity metabolites. This work provides a strategy for the risk evaluation of prothioconazole in aquatic ecosystems and proposes a workable plan for the elimination of pesticide residues in water.

Attached cultivation of microalgae on rational carriers for swine wastewater treatment and biomass harvesting

Attachment effects of six carrier materials on the cultivation of high-value microalga Scenedesmus sp. LX1 in diluted swine wastewater were investigated. The results showed that when the initial algal densities were 5×10⁵ cells/mL and 1×10⁶ cells/mL in sterilized wastewater with 20-fold dilution, the biomass of microalgae attaching to geotextile was the highest. The contact angle and surface structure of the material affected the attachment of microalgae. Further, among the four dilutions, the highest attached biomass on geotextile was 414.47 mg/L in the sterilized wastewater at 20-fold, but the pollutants removal rate and attached biomass were higher in the non-sterile wastewater in the other three dilutions (original wastewater, 5-fold, 10-fold). Next, the microalgae were able to remove pollutants with the highest removal rates of COD, TN, NH₄⁺-N and TP reaching to 86.92%, 60.75%, 71.81% and 96.13%. Moreover, the microalga was found to accumulate high-value products especially protein as high as 44.57%.

Microalgae cultivation using unsterilized cattle farm wastewater filtered through corn stover

The aim of this study was to investigate the cultivation of Chlorella sp. (FACHB-8) and Kirchneriella obesa (FACHB-2104) using the unsterilized cattle farm wastewater (CFW) filtered through corn stover. Corn stover filtration effectively reduced the turbidity and suspended solids of CFW and improved the adaptability of microalgae to CFW. The yields of microalgae supplemented with filtered CFW were significantly higher than those of microalgae supplemented with unfiltered CFW-by 14%-57% (FACHB-8) and 12%-78% (FACHB-2104) and comparable to those with pure blue-green algae medium (BG11). The growth kinetics of microalgae conformed to the DoseResp model. A 3:6 ratio of filtered CFW to BG11 and an 8000 lx light intensity were optimal for achieving high microalgae production. Under optimum conditions, the maximal yields of FACHB-8 and FACHB-2104 were 1.26 and 1.22 g/L, respectively, and the removal efficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand exceeded 95%, 99%, and 82%, respectively.

Microalgae-based livestock wastewater treatment (MbWT) as a circular bioeconomy approach: Enhancement of biomass productivity, pollutant removal and high-value compound production

The intensive livestock activities that are carried out worldwide to feed the growing human population have led to significant environmental problems, such as soil degradation, surface and groundwater pollution. Livestock wastewater (LW) contains high loads of organic matter, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). These compounds can promote cultural eutrophication of water bodies and pose environmental and human hazards. Therefore, humanity faces an enormous challenge to adequately treat LW and avoid the overexploitation of natural resources. This can be accomplished through circular bioeconomy approaches, which aim to achieve sustainable production using biological resources, such as LW, as feedstock. Circular bioeconomy uses innovative processes to produce biomaterials and bioenergy, while lowering the consumption of virgin resources. Microalgae-based wastewater treatment (MbWT) has recently received special attention due to its low energy demand, the robust capacity of microalgae to grow under different environmental conditions and the possibility to recover and transform wastewater nutrients into highly valuable bioactive compounds. Some of the high-value products that may be obtained through MbWT are biomass and pigments for human food and animal feed, nutraceuticals, biofuels, polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, phycobiliproteins and fertilizers. This article reviews recent advances in MbWT of LW (including swine, cattle and poultry wastewater). Additionally, the most significant factors affecting nutrient removal and biomass productivity in MbWT are addressed, including: (1) microbiological aspects, such as the microalgae strain used for MbWT and the interactions between microbial populations; (2) physical parameters, such as temperature, light intensity and photoperiods; and (3) chemical parameters, such as the C/N ratio, pH and the presence of inhibitory compounds. Finally, different strategies to enhance nutrient removal and biomass productivity, such as acclimation, UV mutagenesis and multiple microalgae culture stages (including monocultures and multicultures) are discussed.

Microalgae-based swine wastewater treatment: Strain screening, conditions optimization, physiological activity and biomass potential

Using microalgae to treat swine wastewater (SW) can achieve wastewater purification and biomass recovery at the same time. The algae species suitable for growth in SW were screened in this study, and the response surface combined with the desirability function method was used for multi-objective optimization to obtain high algal biomass and pollutant removal. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and biomass composition were analyzed to evaluate the cell physiological activity and its application potential. Chlorella sp. HL was selected as the most suitable species for growth in SW, and after 9 d of cultivation, the maximum specific growth rate and highest algal density were achieved 0.51 d^-1 and 2.43 × 10⁷ cells/mL, respectively. In addition, the removal of total phosphate and chemical oxygen demand were reached 69.13% and 72.95%, respectively. The optimum conditions for maximum algal density and highest pollutant removal were determined as the light intensity of 58.73 μmol/m²/s, inoculation density of 5.0 × 10⁶ cells/mL, and a light/dark ratio of 3 using response surface model, and the predicted overall desirability value was 0.96. The potential maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) of Chlorella sp. HL in the early stage of cultivation was 0.60-0.70, while under high light and long photoperiod, the value of Fv/Fm and performance index of Chlorella decreased, trapped and dissipated energy flux per reaction center increased. The higher heating value of 18.25 MJ/kg indicated that the Chlorella cultivated in SW could be a good feedstock for biofuel production.

Yeast assisted algal flocculation for enhancing nutraceutical potential of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The present research describes yeast assisted algal flocculation followed by evaluation of algae-yeast flocs for nutritional profile as potent food product. Co-flocculation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa using Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed 58.33 ± 2.37% flocculation efficiency. Nutrient composition of algae-yeast flocs (CP-Y) depicted higher protein content (35.52%) as compared to algae (23.72%) and yeast biomass (33.89). Amino acid profiles of CP-Y biomass depicted increase in essential amino acid content with higher ratio of essential to non-essential amino acid (0.68) as compared to Y (0.57) and CP (0.57) biomass. Lipid and carbohydrate content of CP-Y flocs was estimated as 26.95 ± 0.57% and 21.12 ± 0.83%, respectively. Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) analysis showed presence of omega rich polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like α-linolenic acid (ω-3), Linoleic acid (ω-6), Palmitoleic acid (ω-7) etc in CP-Y biomass. The study provides novel insights on nutrition enriched biomass obtained after algal-yeast flocculation, which can be a better alternative to existing flocculation methods for food applications.

Enhancing CO2 photo-biochemical conversion in a newly-designed attached photobioreactor characterized by stacked horizontal planar waveguide modules

Aiming at alleviating the adverse effects on attached microalgae biofilm growth caused by heterogeneous spatial light distributions within the attached cultivation photobioreactors (PBRs), an innovative PBR integrated with stacked horizontal planar waveguide modules (SHPW-PBR) was proposed in this work. Different from the conventional PBR, the emergent light from the external LED light bars were guided and evenly redistributed within the SHPW-PBR by the planar waveguides and hence provided light energy for microalgae cells photoautotrophic growth. In comparison with the control PBR, the average light intensity illuminating the attached Chlorella vulgaris biofilm in the SHPW-PBR was elevated by 204.11% and contributed to a 145.20% improvement on areal C. vulgaris biofilm production. Thereafter, responses of attached C. vulgaris biofilm growth in the SHPW-PBR to various light intensities were evaluated and the maximum areal C. vulgaris biofilm density reached 90.43 g m^-2 under the light intensity of 136 μmol m^-2 s^-1 after 9 days cultivation. Furthermore, the SHPW-PBR can be easily scaled-up by increasing the quantity of the stacked planar waveguide modules and thus shows great potential in biofilm-based biomass production.

The Application of Catalytic Processes on the Production of Algae-Based Biofuels: A Review

Over the last decades, microalgal biomass has gained a significant role in the development of different high-end (nutraceuticals, colorants, food supplements, and pharmaceuticals) and low-end products (biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas) due to its rapid growth and high carbon-fixing efficiency. Therefore, microalgae are considered a useful and sustainable resource to attain energy security while reducing our current reliance on fossil fuels. From the technologies available for obtaining biofuels using microalgae biomass, thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL), gasification) have proven to be processed with higher viability, because they use all biomass. However, due to the complex structure of the biomass (lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins), the obtained biofuels from direct thermochemical conversion have large amounts of heteroatoms (oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur). As a solution, catalyst-based processes have emerged as a sustainable solution for the increase in biocrude production. This paper’s objective is to present a comprehensive review of recent developments on the catalyst-mediated conversion of algal biomass. Special attention will be given to operating conditions, strains evaluated, and challenges for the optimal yield of algal-based biofuels through pyrolysis and HTL.
