Abstract
A down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor is a trickling filter system used for wastewater treatment, which employs sponges to retain biomass. This study assessed the process performance of a compact DHS combined with a sedimentation tank with seven phases at varying hydraulic retention times (HRT) over 500 days. The BOD of the DHS effluent was maintained at 4.0 ± 0.5 mg·L-1 for the shortest HRT 0.3 ± 0.1 h. The nitrification efficiency was considerably impacted by the reduced HRT, with NH4+-N and NO3--N concentrations of 9.0 ± 1.2 mgN·L-1 and 2.2 ± 0.5 mgN·L-1, respectively. Nevertheless, the effluent complied with effluent discharge standards throughout the trial period. The number of comammox 16S rRNA gene copies ranged from 5.58 to 13.2 × 107 copies·mL-1, indicating that sponges biomass retained carrier can provide favorable conditions for comammox growth and could contribute to nitrification in the high-rate DHS reactor.

Performance and mechanism of pilot-scale carbon fibers enhanced ecological floating beds for urban tail water treatment in optimized ecological floating beds water surface coverage. BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2024; 393:130095. Abstract
A pilot-scale carbon fibers enhanced ecological floating beds (CF-EFBs) was constructed. Compared to EFBs without carbon fibers enhancement, CF-EFBs have the better removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), the removal efficiencies were 3.19, 3.49, and 2.74 times higher than EFBs. Throughout the pilot test (under three different coverage rates), the concentrations of COD, TIN and TP of effluent were 18.11 ± 4.52 mgL-1, 1.95 ± 0.92 mgL-1 and 0.13 ± 0.08 mgL-1. Meanwhile, the average removal of TIN, TP and COD from tailwater was 0.96 gm-2d-1, 0.07 gm-2d-1 and 2.37 gm-2d-1 respectively. When the coverage was 30 %, the CF-EFBs had better nitrogen removal effectiveness (TIN purification ability of 1.49 gm-2d-1). The enrichment of denitrifying bacteria, such as Aridibacter, Nitrospira, Povalibacter, and Phaeodactylibacter increased denitrification efficiency. These results verified the feasibility of CF-EFBs in tailwater treatment at pilot-scale, which was of great significance for the practical application of CF-EFBs.

Abstract
Mediating the anoxic ammonia oxidation with manganese oxide (MnOx) can reduce the requirements of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in constructed wetlands (CWs) and improve the removal of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N). Recent studies that employed natural manganese ore and/or mine waste as substrates in CWs may develop potentially negative environmental effects due to leachates. However, removing NH4+-N by anoxic ammonia oxidation is influenced by the crystal form of MnOx. In this study, a novel clinoptilolite-based amorphous-MnO2 (amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite) was synthesized by the sol-gel method as an alternative substrate to improve the efficiency of anoxic ammonia oxidation and reduce the impact of Mn ion leaching. According to the anoxic ammonia oxidation experiment of clinoptilolite, amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite, and manganese ore on NH4+-N, the amounts of NH4+-N removed were 24.55 mg/L/d, 44.55 mg/L/d, and 11.04 mg/L/d, respectively, and the initial NH4+-N concentration was 49.53 mg/L. These results indicated that the amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite had both the adsorption and the anoxic ammonia oxidation performance. The recycling experiment demonstrated that the effect of anoxic ammonia oxygen mediated by amorphous-MnO2 would not diminish with the gradual saturation of clinoptilolite for NH4+-N. Furthermore, the anoxic ammonia oxidation consumed NH4+-N in the clinoptilolite, which restored the adsorption capacity of the clinoptilolite and simultaneously decreased the leakage of manganese ions in the process, making it environmentally friendly. Therefore, the amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite provided an excellent substrate material for the constructed wetland under an anoxic environment, which greatly improved the nitrogen removal capacity compared to existing substrate materials.

Impact analysis of hydraulic loading rate and antibiotics on hybrid constructed wetland systems: Insight into the response to decontamination performance and environmental-associated microbiota. CHEMOSPHERE 2024; 347:140678. Abstract
Hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) are a promising solution for water ecology and environmental treatment, not only for conventional types of water pollution but also for antibiotics. Among the critical parameters for wetlands, the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) is especially important given the challenges of antibiotics treatment and frequent extreme rainfall. To investigate the removal performance of different HLRs on nutrients and antibiotics, as well as the response of antibiotics to nutrient removal, and the impact of HLRs on microbial communities, new HCWs with vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) and floating constructed wetlands (FCWs) in series were built. The results of the study showed that: (1) HCWs are highly effective in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+-N, NO2--N, and total phosphorus (TP) at low HLR (L_HLR), with removal efficiencies as high as 97.8%, 99.6%, 100%, and 80.5%. However, high HLR (H_HLR) reduced their removal efficiencies; (2) The average removal efficiency of fluoroquinolones (FQs) under different HLRs was consistently high, at 99.9%, while the average removal efficiency of macrolides (MLs) was 96.3% (L_HLR) and 88.4% (H_HLR). The removal efficiency of sulfonamides (SAs) was susceptible to HLRs, and the removal of antibiotics occurred mainly in the rhizosphere zone of wetland; (3) High concentrations of antibiotics in HCWs were found to inhibit and poison plant growth and to reduce the removal efficiency of TP by 12%. However, they had a minor effect on the removal efficiency of carbon and nitrogen nutrients; (4) H_HLR altered the diversity and abundance of microbial communities in different compartments of the wetland and also reduced the relative abundance of Bacillus, Hydrogenophaga, Nakamurella, Denitratisoma and Acidovorax genera, which are involved in denitrification and phosphorus removal processes. This alteration in microbial communities was one of the main reasons for the reduced performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

Abstract
To solve the deterioration of effluent caused by low temperature in urban sewage treatment plant in cold areas, a new type of reactor was proposed, the biochemical environmental and low-temperature operating characteristics of the reactor were studied. Through analysis of flow simulation and dissolved oxygen (DO) distribution when the aeration rate was 0.6 m3/h, it showed that there were many different DO environments in the reactor at the same time, which provided favourable conditions for various biochemical reactions. The operation test showed that the average effluent removal rate of COD, TN, NH4+-N and TP was 92.53%, 74.57%, 89.61% and 96.04%, respectively. And there were a variety of functional bacteria related to nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the system, most of them with strong adaptability at low temperatures. Among the dominant microorganisms, Flavobacterium and Rhodobacter were related to denitrification, Aeromonas and Thiothrix were related to phosphorous removal. Denitrifying phosphorus removal was the main way of phosphorus removal. Picrust2 results showed that the reactor operated well at low temperature, and the regional difference distribution of nitrification genes further confirmed the existence of functional zones in the reactor. The results showed that the Micro-pressure Double-cycle reactor worked well at low temperature, which provided a new idea and way for the upgrading of urban sewage treatment plants in cold areas.

Abstract
This study aimed to propose a novel air-lift multi-stage circulating integrated bioreactor (AMCIB) to treat urban sewage. The AMCIB combined the reaction zone and sedimentation zone, the alternating circulation of activated sludge in separate aerobic and anaerobic environments facilitates the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria. The preliminary study showed that AMCIB had high removal efficiencies for COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP under high dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration conditions, with average removal rates of 93.21 %, 96.04 %, 75.06 % and 94.30 %, respectively. IlluminaMiSeq sequencing results showed that the system successfully cultured heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) functional bacteria (Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Aeromonas) that played a crucial role in sewage treatment, and Tetrasphaera was the central phosphorus removing bacteria in the system. Functional gene predictions showed that the HN-AD played a dominant role in the system.

Abstract
To reveal the mechanisms of enhanced biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal by denitrifying phosphorus removal in a Micro-pressure swirl reactor (MPSR), this study used a MPSR to treat municipal wastewater and enriched denitrifying phosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs) by using its alternating anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic environment. The coupling of denitrification phosphorus removal (DPR) and simultaneous nitrification endogenous denitrification phosphorus removal (SNEDPR) was achieved in MPSR, and the average removal rates of COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP were 91.57%, 98.51%, 85.88%, 96.08% respectively. The results of the batch experiments showed that DPAOs activity in the low dissolved oxygen (DO) and high DO zones were 70.5% and 74.3%. The results of intracellular carbon source conversion patterns, microbial assays and functional gene prediction indicated that Flavobacterium and Dechloromonas dominated the DPR process in the low DO zone. Based on these findings, nutrient removal pathways within the MPSR were integrated.
