Concurrent treatment of raw and aerated swine wastewater using an electrotrophic denitrification system

Electrocatalytic coupled biofilter for treating cyclohexanone-containing wastewater: Degradation, mechanism and optimization

Electrocatalytic coupled biofilter (EBF) technology organically integrates the characteristics of electrochemistry and microbial redox, providing ideas for effectively improving biological treatment performance. In this study, an EBF system was developed for enhanced degradation of cyclohexanone in contaminated water. Experimental results show that the system can effectively remove cyclohexanone in contaminated water. Under the optimal parameters, the removal rates of cyclohexanone, TP, NH4+-N and TN were 97.61 ± 1.31%, 76.31 ± 1.67%, 94.14 ± 2.13% and 95.87 ± 1.01% respectively. Degradation kinetics studies found that electrolysis, adsorption, and biodegradation pathways play a major role in the degradation of cyclohexanone. Microbial community analysis indicates that voltage can affect the structure of the microbial community, with the dominant genera shifting from Acidovorax (0 V) to Brevundimonas (0.7 V). Additionally, Acidovorax, Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, and Hydrogenophaga have high abundance in the biofilm and can effectively metabolize cyclohexanone and its intermediates, facilitating the removal of cyclohexanone. In summary, this research can guide the development and construction of highly stable EBF systems and is expected to be used for advanced treatment of industrial wastewater containing cyclohexanone.

Low-cost materials for swine wastewater treatment using adsorption and Fenton's process

Untreated swine wastewater (SW) discharge leads to serious consequences such as water quality decreasing related to eutrophication and proliferation of harmful algae containing cyanotoxins, which can cause acute intoxication in humans. The use of untreated pig farming effluent as fertilizer can lead to the accumulation of polluting compounds. Biological treatments can degrade organic matter but have the disadvantage of requiring large areas and high retention times and demonstrating low efficiencies in the degradation of refractory compounds such as pharmaceutical compounds. In this ambit, the performance of four low-cost materials was evaluated for treatment of a swine wastewater using physical-chemical processes such as adsorption and Fenton's process. The tested materials are two natural resources, red volcanic rock from Canary (RVR) Islands and black volcanic rock (BVR) from Azores, and two industry residues, red mud (RM) and iron filings (IF). Among the tested materials, only IFs are catalytically active for Fenton's peroxidation. Still, RVR, BVR, and RM were efficient adsorbents removing up to 67% of COD. The combination between adsorption followed by Fenton's process using IF as catalyst showed interesting results. When RM is applied as adsorbent in the diluted effluent, it was able to remove 67% and 90% of COD for adsorption and adsorption followed by IF Fenton, respectively. At those conditions, the resultant treated effluent accomplishes the requirements for direct discharge in the natural water courses as well as the parameters for water reusing.

The potential and sustainable strategy for swine wastewater treatment: Resource recovery

Swine wastewater is highly polluted with complex and harmful substances that require effective treatment to minimize environmental damage. There are three commonly used biological technologies for treating swine wastewater: conventional biological technology (CBT), microbial electrochemical technology (MET), and microalgae technology (MT). However, there is a lack of comparison among these technologies and a lack of understanding of their unique advantages and efficient operation strategies. This review aims to compare and contrast the characteristics, influencing factors, improvement methods, and microbial mechanisms of each technology. CBT is cost-effective but has low resource recovery efficiency, while MET and MT have the highest potential for resource recovery. However, all three technologies are affected by various factors and toxic substances such as heavy metals and antibiotics. Improved methods include exogenous/endogenous enhancement, series reactor operation, algal-bacterial symbiosis system construction, etc. Though MET is limited by construction costs, CBT and MT have practical applications. While swine wastewater treatment processes have developed automatic control systems, the application need further promotion. Furthermore, key functional microorganisms involved in CBT's pollutant removal or transformation have been detected, as have related genes. The unique electroactive microbial cooperation mode and symbiotic mode of MET and MT were also revealed, respectively. Importantly, the future research should focus on broadening the scope and scale of engineering applications, preventing and controlling emerging pollutants, improving automated management level, focusing on microbial synergistic metabolism, enhancing resource recovery performance, and building a circular economy based on low-cost and resource utilization.

Anaerobic Storage Completely Removes Suspected Fungal Pathogens but Increases Antibiotic Resistance Gene Levels in Swine Wastewater High in Sulfonamides

Wastewater storage before reuse is regulated in some countries. Investigations of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during wastewater storage are necessary for lowering the risks for wastewater reuse but are still mostly lacking. This study aimed to investigate pathogens, including harmful plant pathogens, and ARGs during 180 d of swine wastewater (SWW) storage in an anaerobic storage experiment. The contents of total organic carbon and total nitrogen in SWW were found to consistently decrease with the extension of storage time. Bacterial abundance and fungal abundance significantly decreased with storage time, which may be mainly attributed to nutrient loss during storage and the long period of exposure to a high level (4653.2 μg/L) of sulfonamides in the SWW, which have an inhibitory effect. It was found that suspected bacterial pathogens (e.g., Escherichia-Shigella spp., Vibrio spp., Arcobacter spp., Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 spp., and Pseudomonas spp.) and sulfonamide-resistant genes Sul1, Sul2, Sul3, and SulA tended to persist and even become enriched during SWW storage. Interestingly, some suspected plant fungal species (e.g., Fusarium spp., Ustilago spp. and Blumeria spp.) were detected in SWW. Fungi in the SWW, including threatening fungal pathogens, were completely removed after 60 d of anaerobic storage, indicating that storage could lower the risk of using SWW in crop production. The results clearly indicate that storage time is crucial for SWW properties, and long periods of anaerobic storage could lead to substantial nutrient loss and enrichment of bacterial pathogens and ARGs in SWW.

Two polarity reversal modes lead to different nitrate reduction pathways in bioelectrochemical systems

Polarity reversal is one of the effective strategies to rapidly start up denitrifying BESs，but the long-term performances of the denitrifying BESs operated under polarity reversal receive little attention. This study investigated the effects of periodic polarity reversal (PPR) and polarity reversal once only (PRO) on the long-term performances of denitrifying BESs. Repeatable oxidative and reductive currents were observed in the BESs obtained by PPR (PPR-BESs). The peak reductive currents of the PPR-BESs reached 0.95 A/m², and nitrate was mainly removed by dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium pathway with removal rates higher than 95 %. In contrast, the peak reductive currents of the BESs obtained by PRO (PRO-BESs) progressively decreased from 1.01 A/m² to 0.12 A/m². The nitrate removal rates of the PRO-BESs were <50 %, and the product of nitrate reduction turned to N₂ instead of ammonium. 16S rDNA sequencing and metatranscriptomic analysis revealed that Geobacter capable of bidirectional extracellular electron transfer (EET) and Afipia capable of autotrophic growth were the dominant genera in the two types of BESs. Outer membrane cytochrome c and formate dehydrogenase were potentially involved in the cathodic electron uptake. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the EET mechanisms of electroautotrophic denitrifiers.

Development of a New Hydrogel Anion Exchange Membrane for Swine Wastewater Treatment

We developed a proprietary anion exchange membrane (AEM) for wastewater treatment as an alternative to commercial products. Following the successful development of a hydrogel cation exchange membrane on a porous ceramic support, we used the same approach to fabricate an AEM. Different positively charged monomers and conditions were tested, and all AEMs were tested for nitrate and phosphate anion removal from buffers by electrodialysis. The best AEM was tested further with real swine wastewater for phosphate removal by electrodialysis and nitrate removal in a bioelectrochemical denitrification system (BEDS). Our new AEM showed better phosphate removal compared with a commercial membrane; however, due to its low permselectivity, the migration of cations was detected while operating a two-chambered biocathode BEDS in which the membrane was utilized as a separator. After improving the permselectivity of the membrane, the performance of our proprietary AEM was comparable to that of a commercial membrane. Because of the usage of a porous ceramic support, our AEM is self-supporting, sturdy, and easy to attach to various frames, which makes the membrane better suited for harsh and corrosive environments, such as swine and other animal farms and domestic wastewater.

Electrochemical and Microbial Dissection of Electrified Biotrickling Filters

Electrified biotrickling filters represent sustainable microbial electrochemical technology for treating organic carbon-deficient ammonium-contaminated waters. However, information on the microbiome of the conductive granule bed cathode remains inexistent. For uncovering this black box and for identifying key process parameters, minimally invasive sampling units were introduced, allowing for the extraction of granules from different reactor layers during reactor operation. Sampled granules were analyzed using cyclic voltammetry and molecular biological tools. Two main redox sites [-288 ± 18 mV and -206 ± 21 mV vs. standard hydrogen electrode (SHE)] related to bioelectrochemical denitrification were identified, exhibiting high activity in a broad pH range (pH 6-10). A genome-centric analysis revealed a complex nitrogen food web and the presence of typical denitrifiers like Pseudomonas nitroreducens and Paracoccus versutus with none of these species being identified as electroactive microorganism so far. These are the first results to provide insights into microbial structure-function relationships within electrified biotrickling filters and underline the robustness and application potential of bioelectrochemical denitrification for environmental remediation.

The anode is more beneficial to the advanced treatment of wastewater containing antibiotics by three-dimensional electro-biofilm reactor: Degradation, mechanism and optimization

The three-dimensional electrode biological aerated filter (3DE-BAF) has the potential to overcome inherent limitations of conventional electrochemical and biofilm methods. Electrochemical means could enhance the performance and sustainability of biofilm technologies and stimulate the spread of new applications in (waste) water treatment. This paper describes the construction and performance of 3DE-BAF in the treatment of simulated wastewater represented by tetracycline (TC). This is followed by a discussion of electrode performance, the electron transport mechanism and the electrode's effect on the biological community of 3D-EBAF. Given the gap between experimental studies and practical applications, the enlarged anode 3DE-BAF named 3DEAE-BAF reactor was applied with good results to duck farm wastewater. This study could provide guidance as to developing new methods to construct a highly stable 3DE-BAF. The paper concludes that improved 3DE-BAF technology is promising for advanced treatment of livestock wastewater containing antibiotics.

The potential of electrotrophic denitrification coupled with sulfur recycle in MFC and its responses to COD/SO42- ratios

Electrotrophic denitrification is a promising novel nitrogen removal technique. In this study, the performance and the mechanism of electrotrophic denitrification coupled with sulfate-sulfide cycle were investigated under different anodic influent COD/SO₄^2- ratios. The results showed that electrotrophic denitrification contributed to more than 22% total nitrogen removal in cathode chamber. Higher COD/SO₄^2- ratios would deteriorate the sulfate reduction but enhance methane production. Further mass balance indicated that the electron flow utilized by methanogenic archaea (MA) increased while that utilized by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) decreased as the COD/SO₄^2- ratio increased from 0.44 to 1.11. However, higher COD/SO₄^2- ratios would produce more electrons to strengthen electrotrophic denitrification. Microbial community analysis showed that the biocathode was predominantly covered by Thiobacillus that encoded with narG gene. These findings collectively suggest that electrotrophic denitrification could be a sustainable approach to simultaneously remove COD and nitrogen under suitable COD/SO₄^2- ratio based on sulfur cycle in wastewater.
