Abstract
Low-maintenance membrane cleaning is essential for the stable operation of membrane bioreactors. This work proposes an in-situ electrical-cleaning method using an electro-MBR. When the applied bias was transiently increased, the membrane flux recovered rapidly because of the scouring effect from gas evolution reactions. The exfoliation of the cake layer induced by gas scouring played a major role in mitigating membrane fouling, recovering the transmembrane pressure (TMP) by 88.6 % under optimal conditions. Membrane modules did not require replacement during the operation period due to the efficacy of electrical cleaning, with the TMP varying between 37.5 % and 62.5 % of the ultimate pressure requiring change of the membrane modules. Despite the increase in power consumption of 0.66 Wh·m-3 due to the additional applied bias, there was no need for chemical additives or manual maintenance. Therefore, the electrical cleaning method enhanced the service life and reduced the maintenance costs of the electro-MBR.

Abstract
Acid protease is widely used in industries such as food processing and feed additives. In the study, low frequency magnetic field (LF-MF) as an aid enhances acid protease production by Aspergillus niger (A. niger). The study assessed mycelial biomass, the enzymic activity of the acidic protease and underlying mechanism. At low intensities, alternating magnetic field (AMF) is more effective than static magnetic fields (SMF). Under optimal magnetic field conditions, acid protease activity and biomass increased by 91.44% and 16.31%, as compared with the control, respectively. Maximum 19.87% increase in enzyme activity after magnetic field treatment of crude enzyme solution in control group. Transcriptomics analyses showed that low frequency alternating magnetic field (LF-AMF) treatment significantly upregulated genes related to hydrolases and cell growth. Our results showed that low-frequency magnetic fields can enhance the acid protease production ability of A. niger, and the effect of AMF is better at low intensities. The results revealed that the effect of magnetic field on the metabolic mechanism of A. niger and provided a reference for magnetic field-assisted fermentation of A. niger.

Abstract
Fermented dairy products have been essential elements in the diet of Southern Mediterranean countries for centuries. This review aims to provide an overview of the traditional fermented products in Southern Mediterranean countries, with a focus on fermented dairy products, and to discuss innovative strategies to make improved versions of these traditional products. A large variety of fermented dairy products were reviewed, showing high diversity, depending on the used raw materials, starter cultures, and preparation procedures. Traditionally, dairy products were fermented using spontaneous fermentation, back-slopping, and/or the addition of rennet. Compared with commercial products, traditional products are characterized by peculiar organoleptic features owing to the indigenous microflora. The main limitation of traditional products is preservation as most products were consumed fresh. In addition to drying, brine or oil was used to extend the product shelf life but resulted in high salt/fat products. Several studies suggested alternative ingredients/processing to make revised products with new flavors, improved nutritional quality, and a longer shelf life. There is still plenty of room for more research to obtain a better understanding of the indigenous microflora and on quality improvement and standardization to reach a wider market.

Abstract
An electromagnetic field (EMF) has been shown to have various stimulatory or inhibitory effects on microorganisms. Over the years, growing interest in this topic led to numerous discoveries suggesting the potential applicability of EMF in biotechnological processes. Among these observations are stimulative effects of this physical influence resulting in intensified biomass production, modification of metabolic activity, or pigments secretion. In this review, we present the current state of the art and underline the main findings of the application of EMF in bioprocessing and their practical meaning in process engineering using examples selected from studies on bacteria, archaea, microscopic fungi and yeasts, viruses, and microalgae. All biological data are presented concerning the classification of EMF. Furthermore, we aimed to highlight missing parts of contemporary knowledge and indicate weak spots in the approaches found in the literature.

Abstract
This work investigated the impact of temperature on the digestate water quality and bacterial community in the treatment of wastewater sludge using biological hydrolysis (BH)-anaerobic digestion (AD). The results showed that the BH 55 °C followed by AD 35 °C or 42 °C was the optimal temperature combination in terms of methane yield and digestate water quality. High-throughput sequencing revealed the key differences in bacterial communities for different BH-AD temperature combinations. Microbial source tracking showed only minor microbial migration from raw sludge and BH pre-treated sludge to the AD stage. Strong correlations between the residual sCOD, BH-AD temperature conditions, and dominant bacteria were identified. Clostridiales, Bacteroidales, Cloacimonadales, Thermotogales, and Anaerolineales were closely related to the digestate water quality and methane yield. Overall, the results showed that AD temperature exerted a dominant impact on methane yield, digestate water quality, and bacterial compositions in the BH-AD of wastewater sludge.

Abstract
Fungal Mn oxidation is a crucial pathway in the biogeochemical cycling of toxic substances. However, few studies have aimed to promote the process of fungal Mn oxidation or systematically establish the mechanism of action. The effects of static magnetic field (SMF) treatment on the growth and Mn(II) oxidation capability of an Mn-oxidizing fungus, Cladosporium sp. XM01, were investigated. Results showed that 20.1 mT SMF treatment promoted the growth of strain XM01, and increased the Mn(II) removal rate by accelerating the adsorption and oxidation of Mn(II). In addition, the results of RNA sequencing suggested that SMF mainly stimulated energy metabolism and protein synthesis, accelerating the growth of strain XM01. Notably, KEGG pathway enrichment analysis found that SMF treatment significantly up-regulated the pathway of oxidative phosphorylation system, which is capable of stimulating the generation of superoxide (O2•-). Moreover, exposure to 20.1 mT SMF significantly promoted the activities of antioxidant enzymes including SOD and CAT. These results indicate that SMF treatment stimulates the generation of O2•- by strain XM01, and therefore, accelerates Mn(II) oxidation. This is a novel study using external SMF treatment to enhance fungal Mn(II) oxidation.

Abstract
This work performed a pilot-scale study on the effects of the substrate ratio, the concentration of tourmaline (Tur), and its high-temperature thermally modified (HTM) material on the anaerobic co-digestion of corn stover (CS) and cow manure (CM). The experimental results showed that the CH4 yield was higher at a corn stover -to- cow manure feeding ratio of 2:1. The cumulative CH4 yield increased by 22.76% and 8.31% at a concentration of tourmaline of 2.0 g/L and a tourmaline treatment temperature of 400 °C respectively. Microbial diversity analysis revealed that adding low doses of tourmaline regulated the distribution of microorganisms and that Methanobacteria became the dominant methanogenic archaea in the fermentation broth. This work clarified the effect of the concentration of tourmaline on gas production by anaerobic co-digestion from the perspective of the microbial metabolic balance and suggested the possibility of its application on a larger scale.

Abstract
Novel materials that nano-FeS and starch (or chitosan) loaded on peanut shells biochar(Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB) were prepared and applied for removal of Pb(II) and nitrogen(NO3-N and NH4-N) in wastewater. It showed that Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB had excellent absorptive effects compared with PSB. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) by Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB reached 91.74 mg/g, 98.04 mg/g, respectively. Absorption of Pb(II) by Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB were controlled by monolayer chemisorption. Mechanism studies showed that complexation, electrostatic attraction, REDOX and physical absorption happened on the adsorbent surface. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity of NO3-N and NH4-N by Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB reached 16.89 mg/g, 15.65 mg/g, and 18.45 mg/g, 18.28 mg/g, respectively. Absorption of N by Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB were controlled by multilayer chemisorption. Mechanism studies showed that complexation, electrostatic attraction and physical absorption happened on the adsorbent surface. Starch-FeS@PSB and Chitosan-FeS@PSB can be utilized in Pb(II) and N wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Soil pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems globally due to the weak self-purification ability, long degradation time, and high cost of cleaning soil pollution. The pollutants in the soil can be transported into the human body through water or dust, causing adverse effects on human health. The latest research has shown that the clean-up of soil pollutants through microbial consortium is a very promising method. This review provides an in-depth discussion on the efficient removal, bio-adsorption, or carbonated precipitation of organic and inorganic pollutants by the microbial consortium, including PAHs, BPS, BPF, crude oil, pyrene, DBP, DOP, TPHP, PHs, butane, DON, TC, Mn, and Cd. In view of the good degradation ability of the consortium compared to single strains, six different synergistic mechanisms and corresponding microorganisms are summarized. The microbial consortium obtains such activities through enhancing synergistic degradation, reducing the accumulation of intermediate products, generating the crude enzyme, and self-regulating, etc. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of pollutants can be greatly improved by adding chemical materials such as the surfactants Tween 20, Tween 80, and SDS. This review provides insightful information regarding the application of microbial consortia for soil pollutant removal.

Abstract
Electric and magnetic fields characterized by high efficiency, low consumption and environment-friendly performance have recently generated interest as a possible measure to enhance the performance of the biological treatment process used to remove refractory organics. Few studies have been carried out to-date regarding the simultaneous application of electric and magnetic fields on biofilm process to degrade diclofenac. In this study, 3DEM-BAF was designed to evaluate the electrio-magnetic superposition effect on diclofenac removal performance, kinetics, community structure and synergistic mechanism. The results show that 3DEM-BAF could significantly increase the average removal rate of diclofenac by 65.30 %, 57.46 %, 9.48 % as compared with that of BAF, 3DM-BAF, 3DE-BAF, respectively. The diclofenac degradation kinetic constants and dehydrogenase activity of 3DEM-BAF were almost 6.72 and 2.53 times higher than those of BAF. Microorganisms of 3DEM-BAF in the Methylophilus and Methyloversatilis genera were distinctively enriched, which was attributed to the screening function of electric field and propagation effect of magnetic field. Moreover, three processes were found to contribute to diclofenac degradation, namely electro-magnetic-adsorption, electro-chemical oxidation and electro-magnetic-biodegradation. Thus, the simultaneous application of electric and magnetic fields on biofilm process was demonstrated to be a promising technique as well as a viable alternative in diclofenac degradation enhancement.

Abstract
Microalgae contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle through photosynthesis. Given their ability to efficiently convert solar energy and atmospheric carbon dioxide into chemical compounds, such as carbohydrates, and generate oxygen during the process, microalgae represent an excellent and feasible carbohydrate bioresource. Microalgae-based biofuels are technically viable and, delineate a green and innovative field of opportunity for bioenergy exploitation. Microalgal polysaccharides are one of the most versatile groups for biotechnological applications and its content can be increased by manipulating cultivation conditions. Microalgal carbohydrates can be used to produce a variety of biofuels, including bioethanol, biobutanol, biomethane, and biohydrogen. This review provides an overview of microalgal carbohydrates, focusing on their use as feedstock for biofuel production, highlighting the carbohydrate metabolism and approaches for their enhancement. Moreover, biofuels produced from microalgal carbohydrate are showed, in addition to a new bibliometric study of current literature on microalgal carbohydrates and their use.

Abstract
With the increasing popularity of waste to energy conversion, demand for large-scale operation of anaerobic digestors has emerged in the market. However, the process instabilities in anaerobic digestors limit the expansion of facilities to high loading rates. The irregularities in the process can be addressed directly by altering the feedstock characteristics provided an on-hand, robust, and sensitive monitoring device is available. In this context, the bioelectrochemical system has emerged as an excellent tool for monitoring and optimizing the anaerobic process within the reactor. This article reviews the gradual evolution in techniques and approaches for monitoring of anaerobic digestion (AD) process. An analysis of the recently popular biosensing techniques has been done with a focus on the bioelectrochemical monitoring system and its operation mode. A brief attempt to highlight the current challenges in the field of bioelectrochemical process monitoring for AD has also been made, which can be supportive of future research.
