Abstract
Co-composting with exogenous microbial inoculant, presents an effective approach for the harmless utilization of livestock manure and agroforestry wastes. However, the impact of inoculant application on the variations of viral and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remains poorly understood, particularly under varying manure quantity (low 10 % vs. high 20 % w/w). Thus, employing virome and metagenomic sequencing, we examined the influence of Streptomyces-Bacillus Inoculants (SBI) on viral communities, phytopathogen, ARGs, mobile genetic elements, and their interrelations. Our results indicate that SBI shifted dominant bacterial species from Phenylobacterium to thermotropic Bordetella, and the quantity of manure mediates the effect of SBI on whole bacterial community. Major ARGs and genetic elements experienced substantial changes with SBI addition. There was a higher ARGs elimination rate in the composts with low (∼76 %) than those with high manure (∼70 %) application. Virus emerged as a critical factor influencing ARG dynamics. We observed a significant variation in virus community, transitioning from Gemycircularvirus- (∼95 %) to Chlamydiamicrovirus-dominance. RDA analysis revealed that Gemycircularvirus was the most influential taxon in shaping ARGs, with its abundance decreased approximately 80 % after composting. Collectively, these findings underscore the role of microbial inoculants in modulating virus communities and ARGs during biowaste co-composting.

Abstract
Aerobic composting is eco-friendly and sustainable practice for kitchen waste (KW) disposal to restore soil fertility and reduce environmental risks. However, KW compact structure, perishable nature, acidification by anaerobic acidogens, inhibits the metabolism of aerobic microbes, insufficient breakdown of organic matters, and prolong the composting duration. This study, co-composted coal fly ash (FA), to regulate bacterial dynamics, co-occurrence patterns and nutrients transformation in KW composting. Our results indicated, FA created suitable environment by increasing pH and temperature, which facilitated the proliferation and reshaping of microbial community. FA fostered the relative abundances of phlya (Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Actinobacteriota) and genera (Bacillus, Paenibacillus and Lysinibacillus), which promoted the nutrients transformation (phosphorus and nitrogen) in KW compost. FA enhanced the mutualistic correlations between bacterial communities, promoted the network complexity (nodes & edges) and contains more positive connections, which reflect the FA amendment effects. KW mature compost seed germination index reached >85% of FA treatment, indicated the final products fully met the Chinese national standard for organic fertilizer. These findings might provide opportunity to advance the KW composting and collaborative management of multiple waste to curb the current environmental challenges.

Abstract
A 20-day sludge biodrying process was coupled with photocatalysis to improve biodrying efficiency and investigate the effect of photocatalysis on biodegradation. After biodrying, the moisture content in the coupled photocatalytic group (TCA) and the control group (TUCA) decreased from 63.61% to 50.82% and 52.94%, respectively, and the volatile solids content decreased from 73.18% to 63.42% and 64.39%, respectively. Neutral proteinase activity decreased by 9.38% and 28.69%, and lipase activity decreased by 6.12% and 26.17%, respectively, indicating that photocatalysis helped maintain neutral proteinase and lipase activities. The Chao1 and Shannon indices showed that photocatalysis increased fungal diversity and reduced bacterial richness and diversity. The β diversity clustering analysis indicated that the bacterial community structure during the thermophilic phase in TCA differed from that in TUCA. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes annotation showed that photocatalysis has the potential to promote the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies. Biodrying coupled with photocatalysis can improve the dewatering of sludge without negatively affecting biodegradation.

Abstract
Bio-drying is a practical approach for treating food waste (FW). However, microbial ecological processes during treatment are essential for improving the dry efficiency, and have not been stressed enough. This study analyzed the microbial community succession and two critical periods of interdomain ecological networks (IDENs) during FW bio-drying inoculated with thermophiles (TB), to determine how TB affects FW bio-drying efficiency. The results showed that TB could rapidly colonize in the FW bio-drying, with the highest relative abundance of 5.13%. Inoculating TB increased the maximum temperature, temperature integrated index and moisture removal rate of FW bio-drying (55.7 °C, 219.5 °C, and 86.11% vs. 52.1 °C, 159.1 °C, and 56.02%), thereby accelerating the FW bio-drying efficiency by altering the succession of microbial communities. The structural equation model and IDEN analysis demonstrated that TB inoculation complicated the IDENs between bacterial and fungal communities by significantly and positively affecting bacterial communities (b = 0.39, p < 0.001) and fungal communities (b = 0.32, p < 0.01), thereby enhancing interdomain interactions between bacteria and fungi. Additionally, inoculation TB significantly increased the relative abundance of keystone taxa, including Clostridium sensu stricto, Ochrobactrum, Phenylobacterium, Microvirga and Candida. In conclusion, the inoculation of TB could effectively improve FW bio-drying, which is a promising technology for rapidly reducing FW with high moisture content and recovering resources from it.

Abstract
Back mixing was frequently used to replace conventional bulking agenting, however, however, the internal effect mechanism was unclear. This study compared four bulking agents: mushroom residue (MR), MR + primary BM (BM-P), BM-P, and secondary BM (BM-S). The effect mechanism of back mixing (BM) inoculation was assessed based on biodrying performance and microbial community succession. Four trials (Trial A, Trial B, Trial C, and Trial D) reached maximum temperatures of 61.9, 68.8, 73.7, and 69.9 °C on days 6, 3, 2, and 2, respectively. Application of BM increased pile warming rate and resulted in higher temperatures. Temperature changes and microbial competition lead to decline in microbial diversity and richness during the biodrying process. Microbial diversity increased of four biodried products. The number of microorganisms shared by Trial A, Trial B, Trial C, and Trial D were 90, 119, 224, and 300, respectively. The addition of BM improved microbial community stability, and facilitating the initiation of biodrying process. Microbial genera that played an important role in the biodrying process included Ureibacillus, Bacillus, Sphaerobacter, and Tepidimicrobium. Based on these results, it was concluded that BM was efficient method to enhanced the microbial activity and reduced the usage of bulking agent.

Abstract
Using electro-dewatering as the pretreatment process for sludge bio-drying can improve the dewatering performance. It was innovatively investigated including the microbial mechanism and the kinetics of moisture removal by bio-drying with electro-dewatered sludge in this study. Two bio-drying processes using electro-dewatered sludge (EDS) and sludge added cornstalk conditioner (CSS) were compared. Microbial community analysis showed that the abundance of Bacteroidetes increased from 4.21% to 16.67% after electro-dewatering. The dominant phyla were Bacteroidetes (36.79%), Proteobacteria (32.35%), and Actinobacteria (24.58%) at the end of EDS bio-drying. Network analysis revealed that the co-occurrence patterns in EDS included 40 nodes and 97 edges. The prediction results of the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes demonstrated that the relative abundances of carbohydrate metabolism and metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides in sludge decreased, while the relative abundances of lipid metabolism, xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism increased after electro-dewatering. Five thin layer drying kinetic models were analyzed to estimate the bio-drying kinetic parameters. The Page's model could be better fitted to the results and the highest R2 was 0.9570 in the EDS. The new coefficients k (0.1637) and n (1.2097) were obtained. The results provided mechanism and data support for exploring and applying bio-drying technology after sludge electro-dewatering.

Abstract
Biodrying is a treatment to remove moisture using bio-heat generated during organic degradation. Organic matter degradation and microbial metabolism were studied during the whole kitchen waste biodrying, using metagenomic analysis. After the 25-day biodrying process, carbohydrate, protein and lipid contents decreased by 83.7%, 27.8% and 79.3%, respectively, and their degradation efficiencies increased after the thermophilic phase. Lipase activity exceeded 10 mmol d-1 g-1 throughout biodrying. Cellulase and lipase activities recovered by 2.21% and 5.77%, respectively, after the thermophilic phase, while the protease activity had a maximum increment of 347%. Metabolic analysis revealed that carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism was possibly inhibited by the high temperature, but the relative abundances of related predicted functions recovered by more than 0.9%, 7% and 11%, respectively, by the end of biodrying. Protein function prediction suggests that β-oxidation, fatty acid biosynthesis, and the degradation of cellulose and chitin were possibly enhanced during the thermophilic phase. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis revealed that leucine, isoleucine and lysine could ultimately degraded to acetyl-CoA. Weissella, Aeribacillus and Bacillus were the genera with the most enriched functional genes during the whole biodrying process. These findings help elucidate the microbial degradation processes during biodrying, which provides further scientific support for improving the application of biodrying products.

Abstract
Biodrying is a promising method that produces bio-stabilized output with minimum pretreatment requirements. In this study, a hot-air supply system was added to the traditional biodrying process for kitchen waste, which showed significant reduction in moisture content in 5 days (maximum reduction of 37.45%). A series of experiments was conducted to optimize the hot-air biodrying system utilizing different aeration rates, temperatures, and mixing ratios of feedstock to bulking agents. The results showed that a 65 °C aeration temperature led to the highest water removal rate and low volatile solids consumption rate, with the biodrying index reaching 4.9 g water per gram of volatile solids. On the other hand, evaluation of the overall biodrying efficiency based on the weight loss and bio-stabilization showed that intermittent aeration temperature at 55 °C performed best, offering suitable conditions for water evaporation and bio-degradation. In combination with a flow rate of 0.8 L/kg*min and 1:1 mixing ratio, these conditions resulted in the maximum volatile solids consumption of 26.26% in 5 days. The volatile solids consumption and 34.47% water removal rate of the trial had contributed to a total of 64.13% weight loss. The weight loss was even higher than that of a conventional biodrying system which was conducted for more than 14 days.

Abstract
Biogas residue (BR) is difficult to transport and compost due to its high moisture content. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the dewatering and microbial mechanisms underlying the inoculation of a thermophilic bacterial agent (TBA) onto BR with a high moisture content (i.e., 90.4%). TBA accounted for 78.7% of the water loss rate in BR, dramatically higher than the effects of aeration, external heat, or indigenous microorganisms (i.e., 1.8%, 0.1%, and 19.4%, respectively). Furthermore, TBA inoculation resulted in a stable product [with a low moisture content (9.4%) and a high seed germination index (107.3%)]. Finally, TBA increased microbial diversity and the abundance of functional bacteria (Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota), which might be beneficial for refractory organic compound decomposition and plant growth. Thus, biodrying BR via inoculation with a TBA is recommended economically.

Abstract
Stem mechanical strength is one of the most important agronomic traits that affects the resistance of plants against insects and lodging, and plays an essential role in the quality and yield of plants. Several transcription factors regulate mechanical strength in crops. However, mechanisms of stem strength formation and regulation remain largely unexplored, especially in ornamental plants. In this study, we identified an atypical bHLH transcription factor CmHLB (HLH PROTEIN INVOLVED IN LIGNIN BIOSYNTHESIS) in chrysanthemum, belonging to a small bHLH sub-family - the PACLOBUTRAZOL RESISTANCE (PRE) family. Overexpression of CmHLB in chrysanthemum significantly increased mechanical strength of the stem, cell wall thickness, and lignin content, compared with the wild type. In contrast, CmHLB RNA interference lines exhibited the opposite phenotypes. RNA-seq analysis indicated that CmHLB promoted the expression of genes involved in lignin biosynthesis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that CmHLB interacted with Chrysanthemum KNOTTED ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA7 (CmKNAT7) through the KNOX2 domain, which has a conserved function, i.e. it negatively regulates secondary cell wall formation of fibres and lignin biosynthesis. Collectively, our results reveal a novel role for CmHLB in regulating lignin biosynthesis by interacting with CmKNAT7 and affecting stem mechanical strength in Chrysanthemum.

Abstract
Separated hydrolysis and acidification is an effective pretreatment method for anaerobic digestion of lignocellulose. However, excess consumption of soluble substrates remains a problem. Rice straw and pig manure were used as substrates with biogas slurry as the inoculum, combined with aerobic and microaerobic conditions in the 14-day hydrolysis and acidification. Aeration can significantly accelerate volatile solid degradation (38.25%), especially the lignocellulose. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (29157 mg/L) and volatile fatty acids (13219 mg/L) of the group with 4 days aerobic treatment, reached their peaks on day 5, obtaining a balanced insoluble substrate degradation and soluble substrate consumption. Candida, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Acetobacter were enriched at the balanced point for positive contribution to the degradation of the insoluble substrate and the generation of soluble substrate. This study not only reveals the balance between degradation and consumption, but also provides new insight into biogas slurry recycling and anaerobic digestion precursor substrate production.

Abstract
In China, a large amount of kitchen waste (KW) is generated each year, and the resource utilisation of the KW has become a problem. KW has a high carbon content and can be used as a raw material for biochar. Kitchen waste biochar (KWB) can be used to prepare adsorption materials, soil amendments, energy materials, carbon quantum dots, and electrode materials. However, few studies have used KWB as a raw material for catalytic materials. The application of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) doped biochar in the field of catalysis has proved effective and feasible. KWB contained a certain mass percentage of N and S elements, which has good application potential for use in the field of catalysis by KWB. In the process of preparing KWB by KW, keeping S and N as much as possible and converting them into pyridine N and thiophene S benefit the application of catalysis. This review provides a reference for the future application of KWB in China.

Abstract
In recent years, attempts have been made to develop a thermophilic composting process for organic sludge to produce ammonia gas for high value-added algal production. However, the hydrolysis of non-dissolved organic nitrogen in sludge is a bottleneck for ammonia conversion. The aim of this study was to identify enzymes that enhance sludge hydrolysis in a thermophilic composting system for ammonia recovery from shrimp pond sludge. This was achieved by screening useful enzymes to degrade non-dissolved nitrogen and subsequently investigating their effectiveness in lab-scale composting systems. Among the four hydrolytic enzyme classes assessed (lysozyme, protease, phospholipase, and collagenase), proteases from Streptomyces griseus were the most effective at hydrolysing non-dissolved nitrogen in the sludge. After composting sludge pre-treated with proteases, the final amount of non-dissolved nitrogen was 46.2% of the total N in the control sample and 22.3% of the total N in the protease sample, thus increasing the ammonia (gaseous and in-compost) conversion efficiency from 41.5% to 56.4% of the total N. The decrease in non-dissolved nitrogen was greater in the protease sample than in the control sample during the pre-treatment period, and no difference was observed during the subsequent composting period. These results suggest that Streptomyces proteases hydrolyse the organic nitrogen fraction, which cannot be degraded by the bacterial community in the compost. Functional potential analysis of the bacterial community using PICRUSt2 suggested that 4 (EC:3.4.21.80, EC:3.4.21.81, EC:3.4.21.82, and EC:3.4.24.77) out of 13 endopeptidase genes in S. griseus were largely absent in the compost bacterial community and that they play a key role in the hydrolysis of non-dissolved nitrogen. This is the first study to identify the enzymes that enhance the hydrolysis of shrimp pond sludge and to show that the thermophilic bacterial community involved in composting has a low ability to secrete these enzymes.

Abstract
Recent attempts have been made to develop a thermophilic composting process for organic sludge to not only produce organic fertilizers and soil conditioners, but to also utilize the generated ammonia gas to produce high value-added algae. The hydrolysis of organic nitrogen in sludge is a bottleneck in ammonia conversion, and its improvement is a major challenge. The present study aimed to elucidate the effects of inoculated Neurospora sp. on organic matter decomposition and ammonia conversion during thermophilic composting of two organic sludge types: anaerobic digestion sludge and shrimp pond sludge. A laboratory-scale sludge composting experiment was conducted with a 6-day pretreatment period at 30 °C with Neurospora sp., followed by a 10-day thermophilic composting period at 50 °C by inoculating the bacterial community. The final organic matter decomposition was significantly higher in the sludge pretreated with Neurospora sp. than in the untreated sludge. Correspondingly, the amount of non-dissolved nitrogen was also markedly reduced by pretreatment, and the ammonia conversion rate was notably improved. Five enzymes exhibiting high activity only during the pretreatment period were identified, while no or low activity was observed during the subsequent thermophilic composting period, suggesting the involvement of these enzymes in the degradation of hardly degradable fractions, such as bacterial cells. The bacterial community analysis and its function prediction suggested the contribution of Bacillaceae in the degradation of easily degradable organic matter, but the entire bacterial community was highly incapable in degrading the hardly degradable fraction. To conclude, this study is the first to demonstrate that Neurospora sp. decomposes those organic nitrogen fractions that require a long time to be decomposed by the bacterial community during thermophilic composting.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to identify the driving factors of humic acid (HA) during rice straw composting based on Fenton pretreatment with bacterial inoculation. Rice straw was pretreated by Fenton reactions and then inoculated during composting, which was set up CK (control), FeW (Fenton pretreatment) and FeWI (Fenton pretreatment + functional bacterial agents). Results indicated that Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of functional bacteria increased the concentration of HA components, which was due to that bacterial composition was changed and bacterial diversity was decreased. Moreover, Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of functional bacteria increased the bacterial amounts of shikimic acid metabolism genes and the correlation between HA components and shikimic acid metabolism genes. Therefore, the functional bacteria were core driving factors, and NH4--N, pH, cellulose and bacterial diversity as key environmental factors to promote the formation of HA components.
