Development of lignocellulosic biorefineries for the sustainable production of biofuels: Towards circular bioeconomy

The idea of environment friendly and affordable renewable energy resources has prompted the industry to focus on the set up of biorefineries for sustainable bioeconomy. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is considered as an abundantly available renewable feedstock for the production of biofuels which can potentially reduce the dependence on petrochemical refineries. By utilizing various conversion technologies, an integrated biorefinery platform of LCB can be created, embracing the idea of the 'circular bioeconomy'. The development of effective pretreatment methods and biocatalytic systems by various bioengineering and machine learning approaches could reduce the bioprocessing costs, thereby making biomass-based biorefinery more sustainable. This review summarizes the development and advances in the lignocellulosic biorefineries from the LCB to the final product stage using various different state-of-the-art approaches for the progress of circular bioeconomy. The life cycle assessment which generates knowledge on the environmental impacts related to biofuel production chains is also summarized.

Succession dynamics of microbial communities responding to the exogenous microalgae ZM-5 and analysis of the environmental sustainability of a constructed wetland system

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are economical and effective swine tailwater treatment systems. However, nitrogen removal in CWs is limited by the lack of carbon source for denitrification. In this study, we studied the feasibility of dosing the microalgae ZM-5 to improve the nitrogen removal ability in CWs. Compared to the control CW, a 20 % higher removal capacity of COD and TN was observed for the coupled system (EG). The microalgae ZM-5 could interact with denitrifying bacteria to compensate for the deficiency of denitrifying stage in CWs. HT-qPCR chip analysis also provided evidence that denitrification genes significantly increased (p < 0.05). According to the life cycle assessment (LCA), ultrasonic extraction had the best environmental sustainability among four lipid extraction processes. As an improvement strategy, clean energy could be utilized to optimize the electricity source to reduce environmental load (45 %-60 %). These findings offer new insights into the feasibility of EG for environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment.

Combined conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into high-value products with ultrasonic cavitation and photocatalytic produced reactive oxygen species - A review

The production of high-value products from lignocellulosic biomass is carried out through the selective scission of crosslinked CC/CO bonds. Nowadays, several techniques are applied to optimize biomass conversion into desired products with high yields. Photocatalytic technology has been proven to be a valuable tool for valorizing biomass at mild conditions. The photoproduced reactive oxygen species (ROSs) can initiate the scission of crosslinked bonds and form radical intermediates. However, the low mass transfer of the photocatalytic process could limit the production of a high yield of products. The incorporation of ultrasonic cavitation in the photocatalytic system provides an exceptional condition to boost the fragmentation and transformation of biomass into the desired products within a lesser reaction time. This review critically discusses the main factors governing the application of photocatalysis for biomass valorization and tricks to boost the selectivity for enhancing the yield of desired products. Synergistic effects obtained through the combination of sonolysis and photocatalysis were discussed in depth. Under ultrasonic vibration, hot spots could be produced on the surface of the photocatalysts, improving the mass transfer through the jet phenomenon. In addition, shock waves can assist the dissolution and mixing of biomass particles.

Introduction of acid mine drainage in the direct production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from raw biomass and expanding the use of biomass conversion residue

Direct production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) through biomass always needs the addition of exogenous catalysts and causes extra costs. Herein, acid mine drainage (AMD), one of the traditional wastewaters, was introduced as a natural catalyst to produce HMF directly from lignocellulosic biomass. Key factors in the biomass conversion were optimized and investigated by the response surface methodology (RSM), and the HMF yield reached 13.51 wt% under optimal conditions. The metal elements and the acidic environment in AMD activated the Fenton reaction to effectively destroy the lignocellulose structure and synergistically promote the formation of HMF. Furthermore, the biomass substrate in the biomass conversion was indirectly modified by the AMD during this process. The biomass conversion residue could be prepared by pyrolysis to obtain a functional metal-loaded carbon material with good adsorption of thiamethoxam (THX), which provides a sustainable solution for the disposal of biomass conversion residue.

Differences in nitrogen and phosphorus sinks between the harvest and non-harvest of Miscanthus lutarioriparius in the Dongting Lake wetlands

Plant non-harvest changes element circulation and has a marked effect on element sinks in the ecosystem. In this study, a field investigation was conducted on the fixation of nitrogen and phosphorus in Miscanthus lutarioriparius, the most dominant plant species in the Dongting Lake wetlands. Further, to quantitatively compare the difference in nitrogen and phosphorus sinks between harvest and non-harvest, an in situ experiment on the release of the two elements from two types of litters (leaves and stems) was studied. The nitrogen concentrations in the plant had no significant relationship with the environmental parameters. The phosphorus concentrations were positively related to the plot elevation, soil organic matter, and soil total potassium and were negatively related to the soil moisture. The leaves demonstrated a higher decomposition coefficient than that of the stems in the in situ experiment. The half decomposition time was 0.61 years for leaves and 1.12 years for stems, and the complete decomposition time was 2.83 years for leaves and 4.95 years for stems. Except for the nitrogen concentration in the leaves, all the concentrations increased during the flood period. All concentrations unsteadily changed in the backwater period. Similarly, except for the relative release index of nitrogen in the leaves, all the relative release indices decreased in the flood period. At the end of the in situ decomposition experiment, the relative release indices of both the nitrogen and phosphors were greater than zero, indicating that there was a net release of nitrogen and phosphorus. Under the harvest scenario, the aboveground parts of the plant were harvested and moved from the wetlands, thus increasing the nitrogen and phosphorus sinks linearly over time. The fixed nitrogen and phosphorus in the aboveground parts were released under the non-harvest scenario, gradually accumulating the nitrogen and phosphorus sinks from the first year to the fifth year after non-harvest, reaching a maximum value after the fifth year. This study showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus sinks greatly decreased after the non-harvest of M. lutarioriparius compared to that after harvest. It is recommended to continue harvesting the plant for enhancing the capacity of element sinks.

Single-cell sorting of microalgae and identification of optimal conditions by using response surface methodology coupled with life-cycle approaches

Response surface methodology (RSM) has been widely used to identify optimal conditions for environmental microorganisms to maximize degrading pollutants and accumulating biomass. However, to date, environmental impact and economic cost have rarely been considered. In this study, a single cell of microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana ZM-5 was sorted, and its enrichment was carried out for the first time. The optimized conditions by RSM for achieving the highest COD, TN, TP removal and 352.61 mg/g lipid production were 24 h light time, 4.3:1C/N, 7.2 pH, and 30 °C temperature, respectively. Life-cycle approaches were then carried out upon this illustrative case, and the results indicated that the implementation of the above optimal conditions could reduce the total environmental impact by 48.0% and the total economic impact by 10.2%. This study showed the feasibility of applying life-cycle approaches to examine the optimal conditions of a biological process in terms of minimizing environmental impact and economic costs.

Thermochemical conversion of heavy metal contaminated biomass: Fate of the metals and their impact on products

With the rapid depletion of fossil energy and increasingly severe environmental pollution, the development of biomass resources for biorefineries has become a new research focus. However, heavy metals may be released during the thermochemical treatment when the biomass materials used in biomass conversion are contaminated by heavy metals. This can cause secondary environmental pollution or transference to the target products, reducing product quality. Therefore, having a systematic understanding of the fate of heavy metals in biomass conversion is necessary for alleviating potential risks. This study presents the current status of contaminated biomass and conversion products involving thermochemical processes, the migration, transformation, and impact of heavy metals in biomass conversion was investigated, and the utilization of heavy metals in contaminated biomass was briefly outlined. This review aims to link biomass conversion to the fate of heavy metals, avoid existing risks as much as possible to produce cleaner products efficiently, and promote the sustainable development of heavy metal contaminated biomass resources.

Applications of synthetic light-driven microbial consortia for biochemicals production

Synthetic microbial consortia provide a versatile and efficient platform for biochemicals production through the labor division. Especially, microbial communities composed of phototrophs and heterotrophs offer a promising alternative, as they can directly convert carbon dioxide (CO₂) into chemicals. Within this system, photoautotrophic microbes can convert CO₂ into organic carbon for microbial growth and metabolites synthesis by the heterotrophic partners. In return, heterotrophs can provide additional CO₂ to support the growth of photoautotrophic microbes. However, the unmatched growing conditions, low stability and production efficiency of synthetic microbial consortia hinder their further applications. Thus, design and construction of mutualistic and stable synthetic light-driven microbial consortia are urgently needed. In this review, the progress of synthetic light-driven microbial consortia for chemicals production was comprehensively summarized. In addition, space-efficient synthetic light-driven microbial consortia in hydrogel system were reviewed. Perspectives on orderly distribution of light-driven microbial consortia associated with 3D printing technology in biomanufacturing were also addressed.
