Environmental pitfalls and associated human health risks and ecological impacts from landfill leachate contaminants: Current evidence, recommended interventions and future directions

The improper management of solid waste, particularly the dumping of untreated municipal solid waste, poses a growing global challenge in both developed and developing nations. The generation of leachate is one of the significant issues that arise from this practice, and it can have harmful impacts on both the environment and public health. This paper presents an overview of the primary waste types that generate landfill leachate and their characteristics. This includes examining the distribution of waste types in landfills globally and how they have changed over time, which can provide valuable insights into potential pollutants in a given area and their trends. With a lack of specific regulations and growing concerns regarding environmental and health impacts, the paper also focuses on emerging contaminants. Furthermore, the environmental and ecological impacts of leachate, along with associated health risks, are analyzed. The potential applications of landfill leachate, suggested interventions and future directions are also discussed in the manuscript. Finally, this work addresses future research directions in landfill leachate studies, with attention, for the first time to the potentialities that artificial intelligence can offer for landfill leachate management, studies, and applications.

Responses of Chlorella vulgaris to the native bacteria in real wastewater: Improvement in wastewater treatment and lipid production

Alga-bacterium interaction can improve wastewater treatment efficiency. To unravel the mystery of the interaction between microalgae and bacteria in wastewater, mono-cultures and co-cultures of Chlorella vulgaris and native bacteria in pretreated biochemical wastewater from landfill leachate were investigated. The results showed that the microalgae selected dominant commensal bacteria, creating a further reduction in species richness for the co-culture, which in turn aids in the dominant commensal bacteria's survival, thereby enhancing algal and bacterial metabolic activity. Strikingly, the lipid productivity of Chlorella in co-culture - namely 41.5 mg/L·d - was 1.4 times higher than in algal monoculture. Additionally, pollutant removal was enhanced in co-cultures, attributed to the bacterial community associated with pollutants' degradation. Furthermore, this study provides an important advance towards observations on the migration and transformation pathways of nutrients and metals, and bridges the gap in algal-bacterial synergistic mechanisms in real wastewater, laying the theoretical foundation for improving wastewater treatment.

Microalgae and biogas: a boon to energy sector

The global energy generation market immensely depends on fossil fuels which balances our survival on this planet. Energy can be called as the "master element" for our daily needs, starting from household power supply, agricultural purpose, automobile and transportation, industrial workload to economic and research domains. Fuel switching initiatives are being adapted by environmentalist and scientists to bring a novel sustainable source of energy. An environment and renewable alternative to fossil fuels are a must. Over the years, the world has shifted toward generating green fuels immensely. One such potential alternative to fossil fuels are biogases. Being versatile and renewable in nature, it has drawn immense attention globally. Despite having such potentials there exist some major drawbacks which mainly deal with the starting material. One such source for biogases can be microalgae. Microalgae based biogas production can produce huge amount of energy and that has been implemented by many foreign countries and their companies. Despite being in use in many countries, there are issues which needs to be addressed which will overall improve the biogas potential from microalgae even more. This review mainly focuses on generation of biogas from microalgae as a feedstock which are very economical and sustainable in its nature, presenting improvement strategies which can be impended to boost the over biogas sector globally.

From waste-activated sludge to algae: a self-reliant cultivation process in photoreactors using saline conditions

In this study, microalgae-bacteria (MB) systems using saline conditions (3 and 5% salinity) were built in order to use waste-activated sludge (AS) as raw material for cultivating lipid-rich microalgae. Algae were observed to be flourishing in 60 days of operation, which totally used the N and P released from the sludge biomass. A prominent improvement of lipid content in MB consortia was obtained under algae growth and salinity stimulation, which occupied 119-136 mg/g-SS rather than a low content of 12.1 mg/g-SS in AS. Lipid enrichment also brought a 3.1-3.3 times total heat release (THR) in the MB biomass. The marine spherical algae Porphyridium, as well as filamentous Geitlerinema, Nodularia, Leptolyngbya were found to be the main lipid producers and self-flocculated to 23.0% (R1) and 33.5% (R2) volume under the effect of residue EPS. This study had a big meaning in not only waste sludge reduction but also in manufacturing useful bioenergy products.

Nutrient removal and lipid production by the co-cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus dimorphus in landfill leachate diluted with recycled harvesting water

Applying microalgae for landfill leachate (LL) treatment is promising. However, LL usually needs to be diluted with much fresh water, aggravating water shortage. In this study, mono- and co-culturing microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus dimorphus) were used to treat LL diluted with recycled harvesting water, to investigate nutrient removal and lipid production. The results showed that microalgae in co-culture treatment had more biomass and stronger superoxide dismutase activity, which might be related to humic acids contained in recycled harvesting water, according to dissolved organic matters (DOMs) analysis. In addition, the lipid content and yield of co-cultured microalgae reached 27.60 % and 66.87 mg·L^-1, respectively, higher than those of mono-culture, proving the potential of co-culture for the improvement of lipid production. This study provided a freshwater-saving dilution method for LL treatment with recycled harvesting water as well as a strategy for the increase of biomass and lipid accumulation by microalgae co-cultivation.

Interaction of Scenedesmus quadricauda and native bacteria in marine biopharmaceutical wastewater for desirable lipid production and wastewater treatment

Improving knowledge of the alga-bacterium interaction can promote the wastewater treatment. The untreated marine biopharmaceutical wastewater (containing native bacteria) was used directly for culturing microalgae. Unlike previous studies on specific bacteria in algal-bacterial co-culture systems, the effect of native bacteria in wastewater on microalgae growth was investigated in this study. The results showed that the coexistence of native bacteria greatly promoted the microalgae growth, ultimately producing biomass of 0.64 g/L and biomass productivity of 56.18 mg/L·d. Moreover, the lipid accumulation in the algae + bacteria group was 1.31 and 1.13 times higher than those of BG11 and pure algae, respectively, mainly attributed to the fact that bacteria provided a good environment for microalgae growth by using extracellular substances released from microalgae for their own growth, and providing micromolecules of organic matter and other required elements to microalgae. This study would lay the theoretical foundation for improving biopharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

The role of microtubules in microalgae: promotion of lipid accumulation and extraction

BACKGROUND

Microtubules in cells are closely related to the growth and metabolism of microalgae. To date, the study of microalgal microtubules has mainly concentrated on revealing the relationship between microtubule depolymerization and synthesis of precursors for flagellar regeneration. While information on the link between microtubule depolymerization and biosynthesis of precursors for complex organic matter (such as lipid, carbohydrate and protein), is still lacking, a better understanding of this could help to achieve a breakthrough in lipid regulation. With the aim of testing the assumption that microtubule disruption could regulate carbon precursors and redirect carbon flow to promote lipid accumulation, Chlorella sorokiniana SDEC-18 was pretreated with different concentrations of oryzalin.

RESULTS

Strikingly, microalgae that were pretreated with 1.5 mM oryzalin accumulated lipid contents of 41.06%, which was attributed to carbon redistribution induced by microtubule destruction. To promote the growth of microalgae, two-stage cultivation involving microtubule destruction was employed, which resulted in the lipid productivity being 1.44 times higher than that for microalgae with routine single-stage cultivation, as well as yielding a desirable biodiesel quality following from increases in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content. Furthermore, full extraction of lipid was achieved after only a single extraction step, because microtubule destruction caused removal of cellulose synthase and thereby blocked cellulose biosynthesis.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides an important advance towards observation of microtubules in microalgae through immunocolloidal gold techniques combined with TEM. Moreover, the observation of efficient lipid accumulation and increased cell fragility engendered by microtubule destruction has expanded our knowledge of metabolic regulation by microtubules. Finally, two-stage cultivation involving microtubule destruction has established ideal growth, coupling enhanced lipid accumulation and efficient oil extraction; thus gaining advances in both applied and fundamental research in algal biodiesel production.

Treatment of Liquid Digestate by Green Algal Isolates from Artificial Eutrophic Pond

The ability of aquatic microalgae to treat the liquid digestate obtained from the anaerobic digestion of plant waste was investigated. Microalgae were isolated from natural environment for a laboratory-scale cultivation and were then used to remove nutrients and organic contaminants from the liquid digestate. It was shown that the microalgae consortia (Tetradesmus obliquus, Microglena sp., Desmodesmus subspicatus) could reduce nitrogen, phosphates, and total COD by up to 70%, 57%, and 95%, respectively. A new algae genus Microglena was isolated, which in a consortium with Tetradesmus obliquus and Desmodesmus subspicatus exhibited a high efficiency in the removal of both organic contaminants and nutrients from the liquid fraction of digestate.

Enhancement of Carbon Conversion and Value-Added Compound Production in Heterotrophic Chlorella vulgaris Using Sweet Sorghum Extract

High-cost carbon sources are not economical or sustainable for the heterotrophic culture of Chlorella vulgaris. In order to reduce the cost, this study used sweet sorghum extract (SE) and its enzymatic hydrolysate (HSE) as alternative carbon sources for the heterotrophic culture of Chlorella vulgaris. Under the premise of the same total carbon concentration, the value-added product production performance of Chlorella vulgaris cultured in HSE (supplemented with nitrogen sources and minerals) was much better than that in the glucose medium. The conversion rate of the total organic carbon and the utilization rate of the total nitrogen were both improved in the HSE system. The biomass production and productivity using HSE reached 2.51 g/L and 0.42 g/L/d, respectively. The production of proteins and lipids using HSE reached 1.17 and 0.35 g/L, respectively, and the production of chlorophyll-a, carotenoid, and lutein using HSE reached 30.42, 10.99, and 0.88 mg/L, respectively. The medium cost using HSE decreased by 69.61% compared to glucose. This study proves the feasibility and practicability of using HSE as a carbon source for the low-cost heterotrophic culture of Chlorella vulgaris.

Activated persulfate by iron-carbon micro electrolysis used for refractory organics degradation in wastewater: a review

With the rapid economic development, the discharge of industrial wastewater and municipal wastewater containing many refractory organic pollutants is increasing, so there is an urgent need for processes that can treat refractory organics in wastewater. Iron-carbon micro electrolysis and advanced oxidation based on persulfate radicals (SO₄^-·) have received much attention in the field of organic wastewater treatment. Iron-carbon micro electrolysis activated persulfate (Fe-C/PS) treatment of wastewater is characterized by high oxidation efficiency and no secondary pollution. This paper reviews the mechanism and process of Fe-C/PS, degradation of organics in different wastewater, and the influencing factors. In addition, the degradation efficiency and optimal reaction conditions (oxidant concentration, catalyst concentration, iron-carbon material, and pH) of Fe-C/PS in the treatment of refractory organics in wastewater are summarized. Moreover, the important factors affecting the degradation of organics by Fe-C/PS are presented. Finally, we analyzed the challenges and the prospects for the future of Fe-C/PS in application, and concluded that the main future directions are to improve the degradation efficiency and cost by synthesizing stable and efficient catalysts, optimizing process parameters, and expanding the application scope.

Micro-algae assisted green bioremediation of water pollutants rich leachate and source products recovery

Water management and treatment are high concern fields with several challenges due to increasing pollutants produced by human activity. It is imperative to find integral solutions and strategic measures with robust remediation. Landfill leachate production is a high concern emerging problem. Especially in low middle-income countries due to no proper local waste disposition regulation and non-engineered implemented methods to dispose of urban waste. These landfills can accumulate electronic waste and release heavy metals during the degradation process. Similar phenomena include expired pharmaceuticals like antibiotics. All these pollutants accumulated in leachate made it hard to dispose of or treat. Leachate produced in non-engineered landfills can permeate soils and reach groundwater, dragging different contaminants, including antibiotics and heavy metals, which eventually can affect the environment, changing soil properties and affecting wildlife. The presence of antibiotics in the environment is a problem with particular interest to solve, mainly to avoid the development of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, which represent a future risk for human health with possible epidemic implications. It has been reported that the use of contaminated water with heavy metals to produce and grow vegetables is a risk for consumers, heavy metals effects in humans can include carcinogenic induction. This work explores the opportunities to use leachate as a source of nutrients to grow microalgae. Microalgae stand out as an alternative to bioremediate leachate, at the same time, microalgae produce high-value compounds that can be used in bioplastic, biofuels, and other industrial applications.

Recycling spent water from microalgae harvesting by fungal pellets to re-cultivate Chlorella vulgaris under different nutrient loads for biodiesel production

Fungal pellet is an emerging material to collect oleaginous microalgae, but rare studies have noticed that harvested water is available resource for the next round of cultivation. To systematically optimize regrowth performances of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, separated water after harvesting by fungi Aspergillus oryzae was prepared under different N/P ratios. The results showed that chlorophylls and enzymes were significantly affected by the proportion of N and P. Although nutrient deficiency was functioned as a stress factor to restrict carbohydrate and protein synthesis, lipid content was obviously increased by 12.69%. The percentage of saturated fatty acids associated with oxidation stability increased, while this part in fresh wastewater accounted for only 36.96%. The favorable biomass concentration (1.37 g/L) with the highest lipid yield (0.42 g/L) appeared in N/P of 6:1. More strikingly, suitable conditions could save 52.4% of cultivation costs. These experiments confirmed that reusing bioflocculated water could be effectively utilized for biodiesel production.

Microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus dimorphus co-cultivation with landfill leachate for pollutant removal and lipid production

In this study, landfill leachate was pre-treated with NaClO, and then diluted to 5%, 10% and 15% for microalgae growth of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus dimorphus in the mono- and co-culture modes to investigate the nutrient removal and growth characteristics of microalgae. The results revealed that landfill leachate with the 10% dilution rate was conducive for microalgae growth and exhibited robust biomass growth and the highest nutrient removal efficiency. The co-culture biomass in 10% landfill leachate achieved 0.266 g/L within 10 days and demonstrated the improved nutrient utilisation efficiency of microalgae. In addition, the chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrate and total phosphorus removal efficiencies accordingly reached 81.0%, 80.1%, 72.1% and 86.0% in 10% landfill leachate. Meanwhile, both the enzyme activity and fluorescence parameters proved that the cell activity of co-culture was higher than that of mono-culture.
