Abstract
The cyclical variations in environmental temperature generated by natural rhythms constantly impact the wastewater treatment process through the aeration system. Engineering data show that fluctuations in environmental temperature cause the reactor temperature to drop at night, resulting in increased dissolved oxygen concentration and improved effluent wastewater quality. However, the impact of natural temperature variation on wastewater treatment systems and the energy-saving potential has yet to be fully recognized. Here, we conducted a comprehensive study, using a full-scale oxic-hydrolytic and denitrification-oxic (OHO) coking wastewater treatment process as a case and developed a dynamic aeration model integrating thermodynamics and kinetics to elucidate the energy-saving mechanisms of wastewater treatment systems in response to diurnal temperature variations. Our case study results indicate that natural diurnal temperature variations can cut the energy consumption of 660,980 kWh annually (up to 30%) for the aeration unit in the OHO system. Wastewater treatment facilities located in regions with significant environmental temperature variation stand to benefit more from this energy-saving mechanism. Methods such as flow dynamic control, load shifting, and process unit editing can be fitted into the new or retrofitted wastewater treatment engineering.

Abstract
Water eutrophication caused by nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) has become a global environmental issue. Biochar is a competent adsorbent for removing N and P from wastewater. However, compared with commercial activated carbon, biochar has relatively limited adsorption capacity. To broaden the field scale application of biochar, biochar coupled with multiple technologies (BC-MTs) (such as microorganisms, electrochemistry, biofilm, phytoremediation, etc.) have been extensively developed for environmental remediation. Nevertheless, due to the fluctuations and differences in biochar types, coupling methods, and wastewater types, various techniques show different removal mechanisms and performance, hindering the promotion and application of BC-MTs. A systematic review of the research progress of BC-MTs is highly necessary to gain a better understanding of the current research status and progress, as well as to promote the application of these techniques. In this paper, the application of pristine and modified biochar in adsorbing N and P in wastewater is critically reviewed. Then the removal performance, influencing factors, mechanisms, and the environmental applications of BC-MTs in wastewater are systematically summarized. In addition, the cost analysis and risk assessment of BC-MTs in environmental applications are conducted. Finally, suggestions and prospects for future research and practical application are put forward.

Abstract
To explore the intrinsic influence of different salinity content on aniline biodegradation system in high temperature condition of 35 ± 1 °C, six groups at various salinity concentration (0.0%-5.0%) were applied. The results showed that the salinity exerted insignificant impact on aniline removal performance. The low-level salinity (0.5%-1.5%) stimulated the nitrogen metabolism performance. The G5-2.5% had excellent adaptability to salinity while the nitrogen removal capacity of G6-5.0% was almost lost. Moreover, high throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the g__norank_f__NS9_marine_group, g__Thauera and g__unclassified_f__Rhodobacteraceae proliferated wildly and established positive correlation each other in low salinity systems. The g__SM1A02 occupying the dominant position in G5 ensured the nitrification performance. In contrast, the Rhodococcus possessing great survival advantage in tremendous osmotic pressure competed with most functional genus, triggering the collapse of nitrogen metabolism capacity in G6. This work provided valuable guidance for the aniline wastewater treatment under salinity stress in high temperature condition.

Abstract
Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) shows innovation potential of wastewater treatment process in a single tank. However, how to enrich HN-AD bacteria in activated sludge to enhance their contribution remained unknown. This study explored the impact of the feast/famine (F/F) ratio on the succession of autotrophic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and HN-AD bacteria in a halophilic aerobic granular sludge (HAGS) system. As the F/F ratio decreased from 1/9 to 1/15, the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal performance significantly decreased. The proportion of heterotrophic bacteria was dropped from 79.0 % to 33 %. Accordingly, the relative abundance of Paracoccus decreased from 70.8 % to 25.4 %, and the copy number of the napA gene was reduced from 2.2 × 1010 copies/g HAGS to 8.1 × 109 copies/g HAGS. It found the F/F ratio regulated the population succession of autotrophic AOB and HN-AD bacteria, thereby providing a solution to achieve the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria in HAGS.

Abstract
Nitrate pollution in fresh water is becoming increasingly serious. In this study, the effects of temperature and graphene oxide materials on the potential functions of denitrification communities in lake sediments were investigated by metagenome. The addition of graphene oxide significantly affected the abundance of denitrification genes such as Nap, Nos, and enhanced the contribution of Pseudomonas, making low temperature and material addition conducive to the denitrification process. Module network implied that low temperature increased the centrality of denitrification in community functions. At low temperatures, graphene oxide enhanced community anabolism by stimulation organic carbon consumption and regulating the gene abundance in the citric acid cycle and the semi-phosphorylation Entner-Doudoroff, thus possibly stimulating extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) synthesis and secretion. In addition, graphene oxide may also regulate the transfer of reducing electrons from NADH to denitrifying enzymes by affecting the gene abundances of complex I and complex IV.

Abstract
The unique ecosystem within different-sized granules affects microbial assembly, which is crucial for wastewater treatment performance. This study operated an aerobic granular sludge system to evaluate its performance in treating synthetic municipal wastewater. Subsequently, the microbial community within different-sized granules was characterized to investigate bacterial assembly, and elucidated their biological potential for nutrient removal. The nutrient removal efficiencies were as follows: 93.8 ± 2.8 % chemical oxygen demand, 65.4 ± 4.0 % total nitrogen, and 93.8 ± 6.8 % total phosphorus. The analysis of microbial assembly unveiled remarkable diversity among different-sized sludges, the genus relative abundance displayed 61.4 % positive and 33.0 % negative correlation with sludge size. The excellent potential for organic degradation, denitrification, and polyphosphate accumulation occurred in sludge sizes of > 0.75 mm, 0.20-0.50 mm, and < 0.20 mm, respectively. Functional annotation further confirmed the nutrient removal potential within different-sized sludges. This study provides valuable insights into the bacterial niche of different-sized sludges, which can enhance their practical application.

Abstract
This review critically assesses nitrogen removal technologies applied in the reject water treatment, across different stages of technological development, with a focus on their economic and environmental impacts. The prevalent use of biological processes raises concerns due to potential environmental impacts caused by N2O emissions. However, partial nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation demonstrated economic benefits and the potential for positive environmental outcomes when properly operated and controlled. Furthermore, reject water, in many cases, provides sufficient nitrogen concentrations for nitrogen recovery processes, such as ammonia stripping, substituting production of industrial fertilizers and contributing to a circular economy. Nonetheless, their financial competitiveness is subject to various conditions, including the nitrogen concentration or reject water flow. As the environmental benefits of bioprocesses and economic benefits of nitrogen recovery processes may vary, it is crucial to further optimize both and investigate novel promising technologies such as electrochemical systems, denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation or direct ammonia oxidation.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs), as a new type of pollutant, widely exist in livestock and poultry breeding and agricultural soils. However, research on MPs pollution on greenhouse gas emissions in combined planting and breeding systems is lacking, especially from the perspective of phage horizontal gene transfer. Therefore, this paper explores the effects of MPs on functional genes related to CH4 and N2O metabolism in bacteriophages during manure composting and its planting applications. The results of the study indicated that the addition of MPs had an impact on both the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of manure during the composting process and on the compost-applied rhizosphere soil of lactuca (Lactuca sativa). Specifically, on day 7 of composting, mcrA/pmoA and (nirS+nirK) levels in bacteria in the MP group significantly increased. Additionally, it was observed that the MP group had higher average temperatures during the high-temperature period of composting, which led to a rapid reduction in phages. However, the phage levels quickly recovered during the cooling period. Furthermore, the addition of MPs to the rhizosphere soil resulted in higher levels of nirK. These changes may affect greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract
The effects of salinity on anaerobic nitrogen and sulfide removal were investigated in a coupled anammox and short-cut sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SSADN) system. The results revealed that salinity had significant nonlinear effects on the nitrogen and sulfur transformations in the coupled system. When the salinity was <2 %, the anammox and SSADN activities increased with increasing salinity, and the total nitrogen removal rate, S0 production rate, and nitrite production rate were 0.41 kg/(m3·d), 0.37 kg/(m3·d), and 0.28 kg/(m3·d), respectively. With continuous increase of salinity, the performances of the anammox and SSADN gradually decreased, and the three indicators decreased to 0.14 kg/(m3·d), 0.22 kg/(m3·d), and 0.14 kg/(m3·d) at 5 % salinity, respectively. When the salinity reached 5 %, the nitrogen removal contribution of anammox decreased to 68.4 %, while the contribution of the sulfur autotrophic denitrification increased to 31.6 %. The coupled system recovered in a short time after alleviation of the salinity stress, and the SSADN activity recovery was faster than anammox. The microbial community structure and functional microbial abundance in the coupled system changed significantly with increasing salinity, and the functional microbial abundance after recovery was considerably different from the initial state.

Abstract
Low temperatures present challenges for stable wastewater treatment operations in cold regions. Low-temperature effective microorganisms (LTEM) were added as a bioaugmentation strategy at a decentralized treatment facility to improve performance. The effects of a low-temperature bioaugmentation system (LTBS) with LTEM at low temperatures (4 °C) on organic pollutant performance, microbial community changes, and the metabolic pathways of functional genes and functional enzymes were studied. To explore the bioaugmentation mechanism of LTBS based on stress response and signalling. The results showed that the start-up time of the LTBS (S2) with LTEM was shorter (8 days) and that it removed COD and NH4+-N at higher rates (87 % and 72 %, respectively) at 4 °C. LTEM effectively degraded complex macromolecular organics into small molecular organics, and decomposing sludge flocs and the changing the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) structure removed more organics and nitrogen. LTEM and local microbial communities (nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria) improved the ability of organic matter degradation and denitrification of the LTBS and formed a core microbial community dominated by LTEM (Bacillus and Pseudomonas). Finally, based on the functional enzymes and metabolic pathways of the LTBS, a low-temperature strengthening mechanism consisting of 6 cold stress responses and signal pathways under low temperatures was formed. This study demonstrated that the LTEM-dominated LTBS could provide an engineering alternative for future decentralized wastewater treatment in cold regions.

Abstract
Sewage treatment mediated by microbial organisms is a promising green trend. However, the complex balance between microbiota stability and highly efficient wastewater treatment requires investigation. This study successfully improved the effectiveness of sewage treatment by resetting the microbial community structure in the activated sludge. Truepera, Methylophaga, unclassified_Fodinicurvataceae, and unclassified_Actinomanarales were the dominant genera, while salinity and NH3-N content were identified as the key environmental factors governing the microbial structure. By optimizing the microflora structure driven by environmental factors, the key minor genera were activated and coordinated with the aforementioned genera, thereby promoting wastewater treatment. Finally, the chemical oxygen demand, NH3-N, and total phosphorus removal rates were improved to 86.8 ± 1.9%, 82.4 ± 4.1%, and 94.8 ± 3.8%, respectively. It provides a new insight to improve the wastewater treatment through setting microbiota by environmental factor driven.

The coupling system of magnetite-enhanced thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification for refractory organics removal from anaerobic digestate food waste effluent (ADFE). BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2023; 371:128601. Abstract
The aim of this study was to remove the refractory organics from high-temperature anaerobic digestate food waste effluent by the coupling system of hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification. Iron-based materials (magnetite, zero-valent iron, and iron-carbon) were used to enhance the performance of thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification. Compared with the control group, magnetite had the best strengthening effect, increasing volatile fatty acids concentration and fluorescence intensity of easily biodegradable organics in the effluent by 47.6 % and 108.4 %, respectively. The coupling system of magnetite-enhanced thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification achieved a nitrate removal efficiency of 91.2 % (influent NO3--N was 150 mg L-1), and reduced the fluorescence intensity of refractory organics by 33.8 %, compared with influent. Microbiological analysis indicated that magnetite increased the relative abundance of thermophilic hydrolytic acidifying bacteria, and coupling system enriched some genera simultaneously removing nitrate and refractory organics. This study provided fresh information on refractory organics and nitrogen removal of thermophilic wastewater biologically.

Overlooked pathways of endogenous simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic sequencing batch reactors with organic supplementation. WATER RESEARCH 2023; 230:119493. Abstract
The anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (A/O/A) process is a promising biotechnology to intensify denitrification in low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) wastewater treatment, but the neglected typical rate-limiting step-nitrification-would hinder its wider application. Heterotrophic nitrification driven by intracellular carbon (PHAs) could enhance nitrification and achieve endogenous simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (ESND) in the A/O/A process, but its feasibility remains unexamined. Here we established four A/O/A-SBRs at different C/N ratios (3, 7.5, 12, and 16.5) to address the above-mentioned knowledge gaps. The results showed that organic supplementation promoted both nitrification and denitrification (performance and relevant enzymatic activities) until organic overdose (C/N = 16.5) exacerbated niche competitions from other non-functional heterotrophs. qPCR and batch tests indicated that high C/N ratios inhibited autotrophic nitrifiers, and heterotrophic nitrifiers (HNB) dominated in the enhanced nitrification. Given the high HNB contribution (43.7%) and low COD variation (< 10 mg L-1) in the SND (76.4%) of CN12, we proposed a potential SND pathway based on heterotrophic nitrification and denitrification driven by PHAs and verified it with batch tests. Microbial and functional analyses suggested that CN12 favored the intracellular carbon transformation and harbored the minimum autotrophic nitrifiers, supporting the dominance of ESND in the enhanced SND. Our findings expand the understanding of the relationships between intracellular carbon transformation and SND and provide a novel nitrogen removal pathway for the practical application of the A/O/A process.

Abstract
Little research was focused on the anerobic degradation of refractory para-toluic acid at present. Thus, temperature-regulated anaerobic system of para-toluic acid fed as sole substrate was built and investigated via microbiota, metabolism intermediates, and function prediction in this study. Results showed that low methane yield was produced in para-toluic acid anaerobic system at alkaline condition. And the causes were owing to anaerobic methane oxidation and potentially H2S production at 37 °C, N2 production by denitrification before starvation and propionic acid occurrence after starvation at 27 °C, and production of N2 and free ammonia, and accumulation of acetic acid at 52 °C. Simultaneously, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis dependent on syntrophic acetate oxidation (SAO) was predominant, facilitating the removal of para-toluic acid at 52 °C. Moreover, the key intermediate changed from phthalic acid of 37 °C and 27 °C before starvation to terephthalic acid of 52 °C. Starvation promoted removal of para-toluic acid through benzoyl-CoA pathway by Syntrophorhabdus, enrichment of syntrophic propionate degraders of Bacteroidetes and Ignavibacteriaceae, and increase of methylotrophic methanogens.

Abstract
Electroactive denitrifiers contribute to the nitrate removal in a bioelectrochemical system, but their metabolism and growth parameters remain vague. In this study, microcalorimetry as a suitable method was used to evaluate the metabolism and growth parameters of electroactive denitrifiers at different cathode potentials, temperatures and buffer solutions. The suitable cathode potential and temperature for electroactive denitrifiers were deemed as -100 mV and 30 °C, respectively. The suitable buffer was found to be phosphate buffer solution but can be replaced by bicarbonate buffer solution. When cultivated with bicarbonate buffer solution at -100 mV and 30 °C, electroactive denitrifiers achieved a specific nitrate removal rate of 2.20 ± 0.08 × 10-10 mg NO3--N·(min·cell)-1 and two growth rate constants (k1 = 0.0051 ± 0.0004 min-1, k2 = 0.0030 ± 0.0004 min-1), with gaseous nitrogen as the end product. The bioelectrochemical denitrification behaved as a two-step process, in which the nitrite reduction to gaseous nitrogen was the rate-limiting step.

Abstract
In this study, it was investigated the nitrogen removal (NR) performance and potential mechanism for high C/N wastewater treatment under different dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The results showed that DO concentration significantly affected the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN). When the initial DO increased from 0.5 to 1.5 mg/L, TN removal efficiency significantly increased from 65 % to 85 %. However, a further DO increase did not promote TN removal, and the NR was only 80 % with an initial DO concentration of 3.5 mg/L. The effect of DO concentration on NR was influenced by the combined action of functional bacteria and electron flow. Excessive DO concentration did not positively affect NR efficiency but promoted electron utilization and respiratory proliferation. When the DO concentration was 1.5 mg/L, more electrons generated by sodium acetate metabolism were transferred to the aerobic denitrification process, compared to when the DO concentration was 3.5 mg/L.

Abstract
This study aimed to propose a novel air-lift multi-stage circulating integrated bioreactor (AMCIB) to treat urban sewage. The AMCIB combined the reaction zone and sedimentation zone, the alternating circulation of activated sludge in separate aerobic and anaerobic environments facilitates the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria. The preliminary study showed that AMCIB had high removal efficiencies for COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP under high dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration conditions, with average removal rates of 93.21 %, 96.04 %, 75.06 % and 94.30 %, respectively. IlluminaMiSeq sequencing results showed that the system successfully cultured heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) functional bacteria (Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Aeromonas) that played a crucial role in sewage treatment, and Tetrasphaera was the central phosphorus removing bacteria in the system. Functional gene predictions showed that the HN-AD played a dominant role in the system.

Abstract
The increased nitrogen (N) input with low utilization rate in artificial N management has led to massive reactive N (Nr) flows, putting the Earth in a high-risk state. It is essential to recover and recycle Nr during or after Nr removal from wastewater to reduce N input while simultaneously mitigate Nr pollution in addressing the N stress. However, mechanisms for efficient Nr recovery during or after Nr removal remain unclear. Here, the occurrence of N risk and progress in wastewater treatment in recent years as well as challenges of the current technologies for N recovery from wastewater were reviewed. Through analyzing N conversion fluxes in biogeochemical N-cycling networks, microbial N assimilation through photosynthetic and heterotrophic microorganisms was highlighted as promising alternative for synergistic N removal and recovery in wastewater treatment. In addition, the prospects and gaps of Nr recovery from wastewater through microbial assimilation are discussed.

Abstract
Refuse transfer station (RTS) leachate treatment call for efficient methods to increase nutrient recovery (NH4+−N and PO43−−P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. In this study, the effects of various operational factors (seeding dose, pH, initial NH4+-N concentration, and reaction time) on biochar-seeded struvite precipitation were investigated at laboratory and pilot scales. Mealworm frass biochar (MFB) and corn stover biochar (CSB) were used as seeding materials to compare with traditional seed struvite. The maximum NH4+−N and PO43−−P recover efficiency of the MFB-seeded process reached 85.4 and 97.5%, higher than non-seeded (78.5 and 88.0%) and CSB-seeded (80.5 and 92.0%) processes and close to the struvite-seeded (84.5 and 95.1%) process. The MFB-seeded process also exhibited higher COD removal capacity (46.4%) compared to CSB-seeded (35.9%) and struvite-seeded (31.2%) processes and increased the average particle size of the struvite product from 33.7 to 70.2 μm for better sustained release. XRD, FT-IR, and SEM confirmed the orthorhombic crystal structure with organic matter attached to the struvite product. A pilot-scale test was further carried out in a custom-designed stirred tank reactor (20 L). In the pilot-scale test, the MFB-seeded process still spectacularly recovered 77.9% of NH4+−N and 96.1% of PO43−−P with 42.1% COD removal, which was slightly lower than the laboratory test due to insufficient and uniform agitation. On the whole, MFB-seeded struvite precipitation is considered to be a promising pretreatment method for rural RTS leachate.

Abstract
Multi-stage A/O-MBR processes were designed to improve wastewater treatment efficiency; three different designs were carried out and compared in this study. The 2(A/O)-MBR process, i.e., with two sets of anoxic/oxic tanks in series, showed better effluent quality than A/O-MBR and 3(A/O)-MBR processes. The removal rates of COD, NH4+-N, TP and TN were 95.29%, 89.47%, 83.55% and 78.58%, respectively, complying satisfactorily with China’s urban sewage treatment plant pollutant discharge standards. In terms of membrane fouling, the 3(A/O)-MBR process demonstrated the lowest fouling propensity. The microbial community structure in each bioreaction tank was analyzed, the results from which matched with the process efficiency and fouling behavior.
