Abstract
The production of nitrous oxide (N2O) through the biological denitrification of nitric oxide (NO) from flue gases has recently been achieved. Although the temperature of flue gas after desulphurization is usually 45-70 °C, all previous studies conducted microbial denitrification of NO under mesophilic conditions (22-35 °C). This study investigated the biological conversion of NO to N2O in both mesophilic (35-45 °C) and thermophilic conditions (45-50 °C). The results showed that temperature has a great impact on N2O production, with a maximum conversion efficiency (from NO to N2O) of 82% achieved at 45 °C, which is obviously higher than the reported conversion efficiencies (24-71%) under mesophilic conditions. Additionally, high-throughput sequencing result showed that the genera Enterococcus, Clostridium, Romboutsia, and Streptococcus were closely related to NO denitrification and N2O production. Microbial communities at 40 and 45 °C had greater metabolizing capacities for polymeric carbon sources. This study suggests that thermophilic condition (45 °C) is more suitable for biological production of N2O from NO.

THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 904:166529. Abstract
The development of industrial parks has become an important global trend contributing significantly to economic and industrial growth. However, this growth comes at a cost, as the treatment of multisource industrial wastewater generated in these parks can be difficult owing to its complex composition. Microorganisms play a critical role in pollutant removal during industrial park wastewater treatment. Therefore, our study focused on the microbial communities in five full-scale industrial park wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with similar treatment processes and capacities. The results showed that denitrifying bacteria were dominant in almost every process section of all the plants, with heterotrophic denitrification being the main pathway. Moreover, autotrophic sulfur denitrification and methane oxidation denitrification may contribute to total nitrogen (TN) removal. In plants where the influent had low levels of COD and TN, dominant bacteria included oligotrophic microorganisms like Prosthecobacter (2.88 % ~ 10.02 %) and hgcI_clade (2.05 % ~ 9.49 %). Heavy metal metabolizing microorganisms, such as Norank_f__PHOS-HE36 (3.96 % ~ 5.36 %) and Sediminibacterium (1.86 % ~ 5.34 %), were prevalent in oxidation ditch and secondary settling tanks in certain plants. Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) revealed that microbial communities in the regulation and hydrolysis tanks exhibited higher potential activity in the nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) cycles than those in the oxidation ditch. Sulfate/sulfite reduction was common in most plants, whereas the potential occurrence of sulfide compounds and thiosulfate oxidation tended to be higher in plants with a relatively high sulfate concentration and low COD content in their influent. Our study provides a new understanding of the microbial community in full-scale industrial park WWTPs and highlights the critical role of microorganisms in the treatment of industrial wastewater.

Abstract
Stainless steel is highly valued for its superior resistance to corrosion. However, the pickling process involved in stainless steel production generates abundant NO3--N, causing health and environmental risks. To address this issue, this study proposed a novel solution utilizing an up-flow denitrification reactor and denitrifying granular sludge for treating NO3--N pickling wastewater under high NO3--N loading. It was found that, the denitrifying granular sludge exhibited stable denitrification performance with the highest denitrification rate of 2.79 gN/(gVSS·d) and average removal rates of NO3--N and TN of 99.94% and 99.31%, respectively, under optimal operating conditions of pH 6-9, temperature 35 °C, C/N ratio 3.5, hydraulic retention time (HRT) 11.1 h and ascending flow rate 2.75 m/h. This process reduced carbon source usage by 12.5-41.7% as compared to traditional denitrification methods. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of combining granular sludge and an up-flow denitrification reactor for treating nitric acid pickling wastewater.

Abstract
Sewage treatment mediated by microbial organisms is a promising green trend. However, the complex balance between microbiota stability and highly efficient wastewater treatment requires investigation. This study successfully improved the effectiveness of sewage treatment by resetting the microbial community structure in the activated sludge. Truepera, Methylophaga, unclassified_Fodinicurvataceae, and unclassified_Actinomanarales were the dominant genera, while salinity and NH3-N content were identified as the key environmental factors governing the microbial structure. By optimizing the microflora structure driven by environmental factors, the key minor genera were activated and coordinated with the aforementioned genera, thereby promoting wastewater treatment. Finally, the chemical oxygen demand, NH3-N, and total phosphorus removal rates were improved to 86.8 ± 1.9%, 82.4 ± 4.1%, and 94.8 ± 3.8%, respectively. It provides a new insight to improve the wastewater treatment through setting microbiota by environmental factor driven.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the impacts of adding different proportions of woody peat (WP) (0%(CK), 5%(T1), and 15%(T2)) on denitrification during composting. The results demonstrated that compared with CK, T1 and T2 increased the total Kjeldahl nitrogen content (8% and 14%, respectively) and reduced the nitrate nitrogen (7% and 23%) content after composting. After composting, the abundances of nirK and nirS decreased by 4-9% and 33-35% under T1 and T2, respectively. Adding 15% WP reduced the abundances of key denitrifying bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Pusillimonas, Achromobacter, and Rhizobiales by 5-90%. The main factors that affected denitrification genes were the carbon content, nitrogen form (nitrite nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen), and denitrifying bacteria community. In summary, adding 15% WP has the best ability to reduce nitrogen loss by decreasing the abundances of denitrifying bacteria and denitrifying functional genes, thereby improving the agricultural value of composting products.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to remove the refractory organics from high-temperature anaerobic digestate food waste effluent by the coupling system of hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification. Iron-based materials (magnetite, zero-valent iron, and iron-carbon) were used to enhance the performance of thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification. Compared with the control group, magnetite had the best strengthening effect, increasing volatile fatty acids concentration and fluorescence intensity of easily biodegradable organics in the effluent by 47.6 % and 108.4 %, respectively. The coupling system of magnetite-enhanced thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification achieved a nitrate removal efficiency of 91.2 % (influent NO3--N was 150 mg L-1), and reduced the fluorescence intensity of refractory organics by 33.8 %, compared with influent. Microbiological analysis indicated that magnetite increased the relative abundance of thermophilic hydrolytic acidifying bacteria, and coupling system enriched some genera simultaneously removing nitrate and refractory organics. This study provided fresh information on refractory organics and nitrogen removal of thermophilic wastewater biologically.

Abstract
The biological treatments are promising for nitric oxide (NO) reduction, however, the biotechnology has long suffered from high demands of NO-complexing agents (i.e., Fe(II)EDTA), leading to extra operation costs. In this study, novel complexing agents-free bioelectrochemical systems have been developed for direct NO reduction. The electricity-driven bioelectrochemical trickling system (ED-BTS, a denitrifying biocathode driven by the external electricity and an acetate-consuming bioanode) achieved approximately 68% NO removal without any NO-complexing agents, superior to the bioanode-driven BTS and open-circuit BTS. The extracellular polymeric substances from the biofilms of ED-BTS contained more polysaccharides, humic substrates, and hydrophobic tryptophan that were beneficial for NO reduction. Additionally, the external electricity altered the microbial community toward more denitrifying bacteria and a higher abundance of NO reduction genes (nosZ and cnorB). This study provides a comprehensive understanding of microbial behaviors on the adsorption and reduction of NO and proposes a promising strategy for mesothermal NO biotreatment.

Abstract
This objective of study was to evaluate the influence of light on the achievement of partial nitrification algal-bacterial granular bioreactor and its related nitrite accumulation mechanism. After 150-days operation, partial nitrification algal-bacterial granulation bioreactor was achieved under the 200 μmol/(m2·s) illuminance condition. The effluent NH4+-N, NO2--N, NO3--N concentrations were average at 1.1, 61.7 and 8.0 mg/L (n = 21), respectively. The average sphericity of algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (AB-AGS) increased from 82.7% to 91.1%, accompanied by the significantly increased diameter. Additionally, extracellular protein increased by 1.5 times and 0.5 times higher in LB-EPS and TB-EPS of AB-AGS, respectively. According to typical cycles, N2O emission amount reactor accounted for 2.4% of the removed nitrogen. Under the combined inhibition of light and free ammonia (FA), Nitrosomonas-related AOB (0.2% to 2.1%) were the predominant functional bacteria, whereas Nitrospira-related NOB (0.07% to below 0.01%) was fully inhibited.

Composition Characterization and Transformation Mechanism of Dissolved Organic Matters in a Full-Scale Membrane Bioreactor Treating Co-Digestion Wastewater of Food Waste and Sewage Sludge. Abstract
The membrane bioreactor (MBR) serves as the most widely used technology in anaerobic digestion wastewater treatment, but the composition and transformation of the dissolved organic matters (DOMs) are vague. This study focused on the composition characterization and transformation mechanism of DOMs in real co-digestion wastewater of food waste and sewage sludge from a full-scale MBR via molecular weight cut-off, 3D-EEM, FT-IR, and SPME-GC/MS. The results indicated that the co-digestion wastewater mainly comprised organics with molecular weight (MW) lower than 1 kDa and dominated by tryptophane-protein-like substances. The hydrolytic/acidogenic process improved the biodegradability with the conversion of high-MW organics into low-MW organics, while the two-stage A/O process possessed the highest contribution to the organic removal with the consumption of most DOMs. However, the deficient removal of refractory organics (MW < 5 kDa) in the ultrafiltration unit led to the residual DOMs in the effluent. The potential functional bacteria in the biological processes have also been identified and were principally affiliated with Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. These findings could help to advance the understanding of the co-digestion wastewater and provide fundamental information for the optimization and development of MBR in anaerobic digestion wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Thermophilic biological nitrogen removal would be a promising alternative to conventional approaches for the treatment of high-temperature wastewater. In this study, the response of thermophilic denitrification system (50 °C) to a wide range of pH (3-11) was investigated. The results showed that thermophilic denitrification could adapt to pH 5-11, but suffered from obvious nitrite and ammonia accumulation at pH 3. Microbial insights indicated that the enrichment of specific functional thermophiles has contributed to the tolerance towards unfavorable pH. Besides, the potential selecting advantage of nitrate reducing bacteria over nitrite reducing bacteria and the enrichment of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) bacteria could be responsible for the nitrite and ammonia accumulation at pH 3. Moreover, the functional gene prediction denoted higher narG/(nirK + nirS) and nrfA at pH 3, which could facilitate partial denitrification and DNRA. These findings could provide new insight into the application of thermophilic biological nitrogen removal.
