Catalytic Transformation of Carbohydrates into Renewable Organic Chemicals by Revering the Principles of Green Chemistry

Adherence to the principles of green chemistry in a biorefinery setting ensures energy efficiency, reduces the consumption of materials, simplifies reactor design, and rationalizes the process parameters for synthesizing affordable organic chemicals of desired functional efficacy and ingrained sustainability. The green chemistry metrics facilitate assessing the relative merits and demerits of alternative synthetic pathways for the targeted product(s). This work elaborates on how green chemistry has emerged as a transformative framework and inspired innovations toward the catalytic conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates into fuels, chemicals, and synthetic polymers. Specific discussions have been incorporated on the judicious selection of feedstock, reaction parameters, reagents (stoichiometric or catalytic), and other synthetic auxiliaries to obtain the targeted product(s) in desired selectivity and yield. The prospects of a carbohydrate-centric biorefinery have been emphasized and research avenues have been proposed to eliminate the remaining roadblocks. The analyses presented in this review will steer to developing superior synthetic strategies and processes for envisaging a sustainable bioeconomy centered on biomass-derived carbohydrates.

Advanced biofuel production, policy and technological implementation of nano-additives for sustainable environmental management - A critical review

This review article critically evaluates the significance of adopting advanced biofuel production techniques that employ lignocellulosic materials, waste biomass, and cutting-edge technology, to achieve sustainable environmental stewardship. Through the analysis of conducted research and development initiatives, the study highlights the potential of these techniques in addressing the challenges of feedstock supply and environmental impact and implementation policies that have historically plagued the conventional biofuel industry. The integration of state-of-the-art technologies, such as nanotechnology, pre-treatments and enzymatic processes, has shown considerable promise in enhancing the productivity, quality, and environmental performance of biofuel production. These developments have improved conversion methods, feedstock efficiency, and reduced environmental impacts. They aid in creating a greener and sustainable future by encouraging the adoption of sustainable feedstocks, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and accelerating the shift to cleaner energy sources. To realize the full potential of these techniques, continued collaboration between academia, industry representatives, and policymakers remains essential.

Comprehensive review on recent production trends and applications of biochar for greener environment

The suitability of biochar as a supplement for environmental restoration varies significantly based on the type of feedstocks used and the parameters of the pyrolysis process. This study comprehensively examines several aspects of biochar's potential benefits, its capacity to enhance crop yields, improve nutrient availability, support the co-composting, water restoration and enhance overall usage efficiency. The supporting mechanistic evidence for these claims is also evaluated. Additionally, the analysis identifies various gaps in research and proposes potential directions for further exploration to enhance the understanding of biochar application. As a mutually advantageous approach, the integration of biochar into agricultural contexts not only contributes to environmental restoration but also advances ecological sustainability. The in-depth review underscores the diverse suitability of biochar as a supplement for environmental restoration, contingent upon the specific feedstock sources and pyrolysis conditions used. However, concerns have been raised regarding potential impacts on human health within agricultural sectors.

Enzymes and enzymatic mechanisms in enzymatic degradation of lignocellulosic biomass: A mini-review

Enzymatic hydrolysis is the key step limiting the efficiency of the biorefinery of lignocellulosic biomass. Enzymes involved in enzymatic hydrolysis and their interactions with biomass should be comprehended to form the basis for looking for strategies to improve process efficiency. This article updates the contemporary research on the properties of key enzymes in the lignocellulose biorefinery and their interactions with biomass, adsorption, and hydrolysis. The advanced analytical techniques to track the interactions for exploiting mechanisms are discussed. The challenges and prospects for future research are outlined.

A green chemistry approach for oxidation of alcohols using novel bioactive cobalt composite immobilized on polysulfone fibrous network nanoparticles as a catalyst

In this study, cobalt composite immobilized on polysulfone fibrous network nanoparticles (CCPSF NPs) were synthesized in a controllable and one-step way under microwave-assisted conditions. The structure of CCPSF NPs was characterized by SEM images (for morphology and size distribution), TGA (for thermal stability), BET technique (for the specific surface area), FT-IR spectroscopy (for relation group characterization), and XRD patterns (for crystal size). The oxidation of the primary and secondary alcohols to aldehyde and ketone was investigated using synthesized CCPSF NPs under solvent-free microwave-assisted conditions, and high oxidizing activity was observed. In addition to oxidation properties, the anticancer activity of the synthesized CCPSF NPs in breast cancer was evaluated by the MTT method , and significant results were obtained.

Effect of Pre-Existing Micro-Defects on Cutting Force and Machined Surface Quality Involved in the Ball-End Milling Repairing of Flawed KDP Crystal Surfaces

When serving in extremely high-power laser conditions, KH₂PO₄ (KDP) surfaces are susceptible to incur laser damage points (also known as defects). Using micro-ball end milling cutters to repair and remove the pre-existing damage points on the flawed KDP crystal surface is the most effective method to control the growth of laser damage points on KDP crystal surfaces and prolong their service life. However, there are various forms of micro-defects (such as pits, scratches and brittle fractures) around the laser damage points on KDP crystal surfaces which possess remarkable effects on the micro-milling repair process and consequently deteriorate the repair quality. In this work, combined with nano-indentation experiments, elastic-plastic mechanics and fracture mechanics theory, a constitutive model considering the anisotropic property of KDP crystals and a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) were established to simulate the cutting force and surface topography involved in the ball-end milling repairing of flawed KDP crystal surfaces. Besides, the micro-milling experiments were conducted to evaluate the change of cutting force and machined surface quality in the presence of micro-defects with various feed rates. The results show that micro-defects would induce the fluctuation of cutting force and a change of the undeformed cutting thickness (UCT) in the process of repairing the damage points on the crystal surface, which would lead to the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) and affect the machined surface quality. The machined surface quality was found to be deteriorated by the pre-existing micro-defects when the UCT was small (the UCT was less than 375 nm). On the contrary, brittle mode cutting in the local area can be transformed into ductile mode cutting, resulting in an improvement of repaired surface quality that is exhibited by the cutting force and microtopography. This work has great theoretical significance and engineering practical value for the promotion and application of micro-milling repairing technology in the practical manufacturing and operation of KDP optics applied to high-power laser systems.

Ergosterol production at elevated temperatures by Upc2-overexpressing Kluyveromyces marxianus using Jerusalem artichoke tubers as feedstock

Ergosterol is an important precursor in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of numerous drugs. In this study, Kluyveromyces marxianus that showed more potential for ergosterol production than some other yeasts was reported. The effects of transcription factors UPC2, MOT3, and ROX1 of K. marxianus on ergosterol synthesis were explored, and a Upc2-overexpressing strain produced 1.78 times more ergosterol (167.33 mg/L) than the wild-type strain (60.04 mg/L). A total of 239.98 mg/L ergosterol was produced when glucose was replaced with fructose to limit ethanol production. Enhanced aeration increased ergosterol titer from 63.09 mg/L to 128.46 mg/L at 42 °C. The ergosterol titer reached 304.37 mg/L in a shake flask at 37 °C, or 1124.38 and 948.32 mg/L at 37 °C and 42 °C, respectively, in a 5 L bioreactor, using Jerusalem artichoke tubers as the sole carbon source. This study establishes a platform for ergosterol biosynthesis using inexpensive materials.

Deletion of the Loop Linking Two Domains of Exo-Inulinase InuAMN8 Diminished the Enzymatic Thermo-Halo-Alcohol Tolerance

Inulin is the rich water-soluble storage polysaccharide after starch in nature, and utilization of inulin through hydrolysis of exo-inulinases has attracted much attention. Thermo-halo-alcohol tolerance is essential for exo-inulinase applications, while no report reveals the molecular basis involved in halo-alcohol tolerance of exo-inulinases via experimental data. In this study, two loops of exo-inulinase InuAMN8, including the loop built with ³⁶⁰GHVRLGPQP³⁶⁸ linking domains of Glyco_hydro_32N and Glyco_hydro_32C and another loop built with ¹⁶⁹GGAG¹⁷² in the catalytic domain, were deleted to generate mutants MutG360Δ9 and MutG169Δ4, respectively. After heterologous expression, purification, and dialysis, InuAMN8, MutG169Δ4, and MutG360Δ9 showed half-lives of 144, 151, and 7 min at 50°C, respectively. InuAMN8 and MutG169Δ4 were very stable, while MutG360Δ9 showed a half-life of approximately 60 min in 5.0% (w/v) NaCl, and they showed half-lives of approximately 60 min in 25.0, 25.0, and 5.0% (w/v) ethanol, respectively. Structural analysis indicated that two cation-π bonds, which contributed to thermal properties of InuAMN8 at high temperatures, broke in MutG360Δ9. Four basic amino acid residues were exposed to the structural surface of MutG360Δ9 and formed positive and neutral electrostatic potential that caused detrimental effects on halo-alcohol tolerance. The study may provide a better understanding of the loop-function relationships that are involved in thermo-halo-alcohol adaptation of enzymes in extreme environment.

Metal-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanomaterials for Photocatalytic Environmental Applications—A Review

In the current world situation, population and industrial growth have become major problems for energy and environmental concerns. Extremely noxious pollutants such as heavy metal ions, dyes, antibiotics, phenols, and pesticides in water are the main causes behind deprived water quality leading to inadequate access to clean water. In this connection, graphite carbon nitride (GCN or g-C3N4) a nonmetallic polymeric material has been utilized extensively as a visible-light-responsive photocatalyst for a variety of environmental applications. This review focuses on recent developments in the design and photocatalytic applications of metal-doped GCN-based nanomaterials in CO2 photoreduction, water splitting toward hydrogen production, bacterial disinfection, and organic pollutant degradation. Additionally, this review discusses various methods of using GCN-based materials to optimize dye sensitization, metal deposition, ion doping, and their environmental applications.
