Fate and mitigation of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in microbial fuel cell and coupled systems

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), known for their low energy consumption, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness, have been widely utilized for removing antibiotics from wastewater. Compared to conventional wastewater treatment methods, MFCs produce less sludge while exhibiting superior antibiotic removal capacity, effectively reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigates 1) the mechanisms of ARGs generation and proliferation in MFCs; 2) the influencing factors on the fate and removal of antibiotics and ARGs; and 3) the fate and mitigation of ARGs in MFC and MFC-coupled systems. It is indicated that high removal efficiency of antibiotics and minimal amount of sludge production contribute the mitigation of ARGs in MFCs. Influencing factors, such as cathode potential, electrode materials, salinity, initial antibiotic concentration, and additional additives, can lead to the selection of tolerant microbial communities, thereby affecting the abundance of ARGs carried by various microbial hosts. Integrating MFCs with other wastewater treatment systems can synergistically enhance their performance, thereby improving the overall removal efficiency of ARGs. Moreover, challenges and future directions for mitigating the spread of ARGs using MFCs are suggested.

A review on the alternatives to antibiotics and the treatment of antibiotic pollution: Current development and future prospects

Antibiotics, widely used in the fields of medicine, animal husbandry, aquaculture, and agriculture, pose a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. To prevent antibiotic pollution, efforts have been made in recent years to explore alternative options for antibiotics in animal feed, but the effectiveness of these alternatives in replacing antibiotics is not thoroughly understood due to the variation from case to case. Furthermore, a systematic summary of the specific applications and limitations of antibiotic removal techniques in the environment is crucial for developing effective strategies to address antibiotic contamination. This comprehensive review summarized the current development and potential issues on different types of antibiotic substitutes, such as enzyme preparations, probiotics, and plant extracts. Meanwhile, the existing technologies for antibiotic residue removal were discussed under the scope of application and limitation. The present work aims to highlight the strategy of controlling antibiotics from the source and provide valuable insights for green and efficient antibiotic treatment.

Simultaneous Wastewater Treatment and Resources Recovery by Forward Osmosis Coupled with Microbial Fuel Cell: A Review

Osmotic microbial fuel cells (OsMFCs) with the abilities to simultaneously treat wastewater, produce clean water, and electricity provided a novel approach for the application of microbial fuel cell (MFC) and forward osmosis (FO). This synergistic merging of functions significantly improved the performances of OsMFCs. Nonetheless, despite their promising potential, OsMFCs currently receive inadequate attention in wastewater treatment, water reclamation, and energy recovery. In this review, we delved into the cooperation mechanisms between the MFC and the FO. MFC facilitates the FO process by promoting water flux, reducing reverse solute flux (RSF), and degrading contaminants in the feed solution (FS). Moreover, the water flux based on the FO principle contributed to MFC's electricity generation capability. Furthermore, we summarized the potential roles of OsMFCs in resource recovery, including nutrient, energy, and water recovery, and identified the key factors, such as configurations, FO membranes, and draw solutions (DS). We prospected the practical applications of OsMFCs in the future, including their capabilities to remove emerging pollutants. Finally, we also highlighted the existing challenges in membrane fouling, system expansion, and RSF. We hope this review serves as a useful guide for the practical implementation of OsMFCs.

Elucidating applied voltage on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes in microbial electrolysis cell: Focusing on its transmission between anolyte and biofilm microbes

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) system to treat wastewater containing antibiotics has been researched actively in past years. However, the fate of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in MEC is not fully revealed. The effect of applied voltage on the migration of ARGs between anolyte and biofilm microbes via examining the microbial physiology and abundances of macrolide resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was elucidated in this research. Results showed that the abundance of MRGs and MGEs was decreased in the anolyte, but their abundances were increased on the electrode biofilm, indicating their transmission from anolyte to biofilm microbes. Increased applied voltage enhanced adenosine triphosphate (ATP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cell membrane permeability of electrode microorganisms. The structure of the electrode microbial community was shifted through applied voltage, and the abundance of electroactive microorganisms (Geobacter, Azospirillum and Dechlorobacter) was significantly improved. Network analysis revealed that Geobacter and Geothrix were potential hosts for MRGs. Therefore, the horizontal and vertical gene transfer of ARGs could be increased by the applied voltage, leading to the enriched ARGs at the electrode biofilm. This study provides evidence and insights into the transmission of ARGs between anolyte and biofilm microbes in MEC system. SYNOPSIS: This study revealed the effect of applied voltage on ARGs in MEC and the potential migration mechanism of ARGs.

Towards bio-utilization and energy recovery potential exploration of membrane foulant from membrane bioreactor by using microbial fuel cell-centered technology

The utilization of membrane foulant is expected to push forward the developments of membrane bioreactor (MBR). In this study, the combination of microbial fuel cell (MFC) with bio-electrochemical enhanced hydrolysis process was proposed, and three systems were conducted to utilize the membrane foulant and simultaneously harvest electricity. Polysaccharides (PS), proteins (PN) and humic acid (HA) concentration variations and the fluorescent compound changes in different chambers revealed the biodegradability of membrane foulant. Optimized HRT improved the hydrolysis of membrane foulant while allowing MFC to utilize the biodegradable components efficiently. MFC-MFC system had the highest voltage and satisfactory effluent quality at HRT of 1 d. Microbial community structure analysis indicated that Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes and Bacteroidetes were the majority phyla and network analysis further revealed that Proteobacteria played a key role in membrane foulant utilization. This study suggests that MFC hybrid systems has potential application for synchronous membrane foulant reuse and energy recovery.

Antimicrobial and the Resistances in the Environment: Ecological and Health Risks, Influencing Factors, and Mitigation Strategies

Antimicrobial contamination and antimicrobial resistance have become global environmental and health problems. A large number of antimicrobials are used in medical and animal husbandry, leading to the continuous release of residual antimicrobials into the environment. It not only causes ecological harm, but also promotes the occurrence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. The role of environmental factors in antimicrobial contamination and the spread of antimicrobial resistance is often overlooked. There are a large number of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes in human beings, which increases the likelihood that pathogenic bacteria acquire resistance, and also adds opportunities for human contact with antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. In this paper, we review the fate of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance in the environment, including the occurrence, spread, and impact on ecological and human health. More importantly, this review emphasizes a number of environmental factors that can exacerbate antimicrobial contamination and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. In the future, the timely removal of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes in the environment will be more effective in alleviating antimicrobial contamination and antimicrobial resistance.

Deciphering the fate of antibiotic resistance genes in norfloxacin wastewater treated by a bio-electro-Fenton system

The misuse of antibiotics has increased the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), considered a class of critical environmental contaminants due to their ubiquitous and persistent nature. Previous studies reported the potentiality of bio-electro-Fenton processes for antibiotic removal and ARGs control. However, the production and fate of ARGs in bio-electro-Fenton processes triggered by microbial fuel cells are rare. In this study, the norfloxacin (NFLX) average residual concentrations within two days were 2.02, 6.07 and 14.84 mg/L, and the average removal efficiency of NFLX was 79.8 %, 69.6 % and 62.9 % at the initial antibiotic concentrations of 10, 20 and 40 mg/L, respectively. The most prevalent resistance gene type in all processes was the fluoroquinolone antibiotic gene. Furthermore, Proteobacteria was the dominant ARG-carrying bacteria. Overall, this study can provide theoretical support for the efficient treatment of high antibiotics-contained wastewater by bio-electro-Fenton systems to better control ARGs from the perspective of ecological security.

Hydrolyzed polyacrylamide biotransformation during the formation of anode biofilm in microbial fuel cell biosystem: Bioelectricity, metabolites and functional microorganisms

The anode biofilm serves as the core dominating the performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) biosystem. This research provides new insights into hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) biotransformation during the formation of anode biofilm. The current density, coulombic efficiency, voltage, power density, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and total nitrogen (TN) removal enhanced with the thickening of biofilm (1-6 cm), and the maximums achieved 146 mA·m^-2, 47.3%, 8.76 V, 1.28 W·m^-2, 184 mg·L^-1 and 84.6%, respectively. HPAM concentration descended from 508 mg·L^-1 to 83.3 mg·L^-1 after 60 days. HPAM was metabolized into VFAs, N₂, NO₂^--N and NO₃^--N, thereby releasing electrons. Laccase and tyrosine/tryptophan protein induced HPAM metabolism and bioelectricity production. The microbial functions involving HPAM biotransformation and bioelectricity generation were clarified. The alternative resource recovery, techno-economic comparison and development direction of MFC biosystem were discussed to achieve the synchronization of HPAM-containing wastewater treatment and bioelectricity generation based on MFC biosystem.

Electric Current Generation by Increasing Sucrose in Papaya Waste in Microbial Fuel Cells

The accelerated increase in energy consumption by human activity has generated an increase in the search for new energies that do not pollute the environment, due to this, microbial fuel cells are shown as a promising technology. The objective of this research was to observe the influence on the generation of bioelectricity of sucrose, with different percentages (0%, 5%, 10% and 20%), in papaya waste using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). It was possible to generate voltage and current peaks of 0.955 V and 5.079 mA for the cell with 20% sucrose, which operated at an optimal pH of 4.98 on day fifteen. In the same way, the internal resistance values of all the cells were influenced by the increase in sucrose, showing that the cell without sucrose was 0.1952 ± 0.00214 KΩ and with 20% it was 0.044306 ± 0.0014 KΩ. The maximum power density was 583.09 mW/cm² at a current density of 407.13 A/cm² and with a peak voltage of 910.94 mV, while phenolic compounds are the ones with the greatest presence in the FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) absorbance spectrum. We were able to molecularly identify the species Achromobacter xylosoxidans (99.32%), Acinetobacter bereziniae (99.93%) and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (100%) present in the anode electrode of the MFCs. This research gives a novel use for sucrose to increase the energy values in a microbial fuel cell, improving the existing ones and generating a novel way of generating electricity that is friendly to the environment.

The effects of biochar on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) removal during different environmental governance processes: A review

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pollution has been considered as one of the most significant emerging environmental and health challenges in the 21st century, many efforts have been paid to control the proliferation and dissemination of ARGs in the environment. Among them, the biochar performs a positive effect in reducing the abundance of ARGs during different environmental governance processes and has shown great application prospects in controlling the ARGs. Although there are increasing studies on employing biochar to control ARGs, there is still a lack of review paper on this hotspot. In this review, firstly, the applications of biochar to control ARGs in different environmental governance processes were summarized. Secondly, the processes and mechanisms of ARGs removal promoted by biochar were proposed and discussed. Then, the effects of biochar properties on ARGs removal were highlighted. Finally, the future prospects and challenges of using biochar to control ARGs were proposed. It is hoped that this review could provide some new guidance for the further research of this field.
