Abstract
In this study, the feasibility of promoting the lactic acid (LA) fermentation of food waste (FW) with iron tailings (ITs) addition was explored. The best LA yield was 0.91 g LA/g total sugar when 1 % ITs were added into the system. The mechanisms for promoting LA production were acidification alleviation effects and reduction equivalent supply of ITs. Furthermore, the addition of ITs promoted carbohydrate hydrolysis, and the carbohydrates digestibility reached 88.85 % in the 1 % ITs group. The ITs also affected the microbial communities, Lactococcus gradually replaced Streptococcus as the dominant genus, and results suggested that Lactococcus had a positive correlation with LA production and carbohydrate digestibility. Finally, the complex LAB in FW had significant effects on heavy metal removal from ITs, and the removal efficiency Cr, As, Pb, Cd, and Hg can reach 50.84 %, 26.72 %, 59.65 %, 49.75 % and 78.87 % in the 1 % ITs group, respectively.

Abstract
The production of lactic acid (LA) through biomass fermentation represents a promising alternative to the chemical synthesis. The use of agri-food by-products as fermentable carbohydrate sources can improve process sustainability by reducing waste and valorizing residual biomass. This study assessed the use of apple and tomato pomaces for producing LA through fermentation using thermotolerant bacteria under aerobic and non-sterile conditions. Three bacteria were evaluated and Heyndrickxia coagulans DSM 2314 was selected for its ability to produce LA from hydrolyzates of apple pomace (APH) and tomato pomace (TPH). The fermentation conditions were optimized to maximize LA production from APH, TPH and a mixture of both hydrolyzates. Therefore, LA productions ranged from 36.98 ± 0.41 to 40.72 ± 0.43 g/L, with yields from 0.86 ± 0.02 to 1.01 ± 0.01 g/g. Yeast extract was necessary as a nitrogen source for fermenting APH, while TPH and the mixture of both hydrolyzates did not require any supplementation. Other nitrogen sources, such as wine lees, urea and NH3Cl, were tested for fermenting APH. However, mixing this hydrolyzate with TPH proved to be the most viable alternative. This study demonstrates the potential for valorizing apple and tomato pomaces into LA under feasible fermentation conditions.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is an important chemical with broad market applications. To optimize LA production, food waste has been explored as feedstock. Due to the wide variety of food waste types, most current research studies have obtained different conclusions. This study focuses on carbohydrate-rich fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) and lipid-rich kitchen waste (KW), and the effect of inoculum, temperature, micro-oxygen, and initial pH were compared. FVW has a greater potential for LA production than KW. As an inoculum, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) significantly increased the maximum LA concentration (27.6 g/L) by 50.8 % compared with anaerobic sludge (AS). FVW exhibited optimal LA production at 37 °C with micro-oxygen. Adjustment of initial pH from 4 to 8 alleviated the inhibitory effect of accumulated LA, resulting in a 46.2 % increase in maximum LA production in FVW. The expression of functional genes associated with metabolism, genetic information processing, and environmental information processing was higher at 37 °C compared to 50 °C.

Abstract
Cellulase is a new research point besides glucoamylase, amylase, and protease in the enzyme industry. Cellulase can decompose lignocellulosic biomass into small-molecule sugars, which facilitates microbial utilization; thus, it has a vast market potential in the field of feed, food, energy, and chemistry. The Aspergillus was the first strain used in cellulase preparation because of its safety and non-toxicity, strong growth ability, and high enzyme yield. This review provides the latest research and advances on preparing cellulase from Aspergillus. The metabolic mechanisms of cellulase secretion by Aspergillus, the selection of fermentation substrates, the comparison of the fermentation modes, and the effect of fermentation conditions have been discussed in this review. Also, the subsequent separation and purification techniques of Aspergillus cellulase, including salting out, organic solvent precipitation, ultrafiltration, and chromatography, have been declared. Further, bottlenecks in Aspergillus cellulase preparation and corresponding feasible approaches, such as genetic engineering, mixed culture, and cellulase immobilization, have also been proposed in this review. This paper provides theoretical support for the efficient production and application of Aspergillus cellulase.

Abstract
The current methods of treating organic waste suffer from limited resource usage and low product value. Research and development of value-added products emerges as an unavoidable trend for future growth. Electro-fermentation (EF) is a technique employed to stimulate cell proliferation, expedite microbial metabolism, and enhance the production of value-added products by administering minute voltages or currents in the fermentation system. This method represents a novel research direction lying at the crossroads of electrochemistry and biology. This article documents the current progress of EF for a range of value-added products, including gaseous fuels, organic acids, and other organics. It also presents novel value-added products, such as 1,3-propanediol, 3-hydroxypropionic acid, succinic acid, acrylic acid, and lysine. The latest research trends suggest a focus on EF for cogeneration of value-added products, studying microbial community structure and electroactive bacteria, exploring electron transfer mechanisms in EF systems, developing effective methods for nutrient recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus, optimizing EF conditions, and utilizing biosensors and artificial neural networks in this area. In this paper, an analysis is conducted on the challenges that currently exist regarding the selection of conductive materials, optimization of electrode materials, and development of bioelectrochemical system (BES) coupling processes in EF systems. The aim is to provide a reference for the development of more efficient, advanced, and value-added EF technologies. Overall, this paper aims to provide references and ideas for the development of more efficient and advanced EF technology.

Abstract
Agricultural by-products like rice husk, bran, and spray corn husks, often utilized as feed, are considered less desirable. This study aims to enhance the utilization rate of these materials by subjecting then to liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis to produce fermentable sugars. We investigated the production of L-lactic acid using two methods: simultaneous saccharification fermentation (SSF) and separate hydrolysis fermentation (SHF), following varying intensities of LHW pretreatment. The results showed that the optimal enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency was achieved from spray corn husks under the pretreatment conditions of 155 °C and 15 min. SHF was generally more effective than SSF. The glucose L-lactic acid conversion rate in SHF using spray corn husks can reach more than 90 %. Overall, this work proposed a novel, environmental-friendly strategy for efficient and for L- lactic acid production from spray corn husks.

Abstract
During the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass such as corn stover, many by-products are produced in the pretreatment process that can severely inhibit the activity of microbes in the fermentation step. To achieve efficient biomass conversion, detoxification is usually required before microbial fermentation. In this study, the prehydrolysate from dilute acid pretreatment of corn stover was used as a lactic acid fermentation substrate. Biochars made from corn stover (CSB), cow manure (CMB), and a mixture of corn stover and cow manure (MB) were applied for the detoxification of the prehydrolysate. All three types of biochar had a porous structure with a specific surface area ranging from 4.08 m2 g-1 (CMB) to 7.03 m2 g-1 (MB). After detoxification, both the numbers of inhibitors and their concentrations in the prehydrolysate decreased, indicating that the biochars prepared in this study were effective in inhibitor removal. The concentration of lactic acid obtained from the prehydrolysate without detoxification was only 12.43 g L-1 after fermentation for 96 h with a productivity of 0.13 g (L h)-1. Although the specific area of CMB was the lowest among the three biochars, the CMB-treated prehydrolysate resulted in the highest lactic acid concentration of 39.25 g L-1 at 96 h with a productivity of 0.41 g (L h)-1. The lactic acid bacteria in the CMB-treated prehydrolysate grew faster than the other two biochars, reaching an OD value of 8.12 at 48 h. The results showed promise for the use of agricultural wastes to make biochar to increase the yield of lactic acid fermentation through the detoxification process.

Abstract
Bread waste (BW), a rich source of fermentable carbohydrates, has the potential to be a sustainable feedstock for the production of lactic acid (LA). In our previous work, the LA concentration of 155.4 g/L was achieved from BW via enzymatic hydrolysis, which was followed by a techno-economic analysis of the bioprocess. This work evaluates the relative environmental performance of two scenarios - neutral and low pH fermentation processes for polymer-grade LA production from BW using a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA). The LCA was based on an industrial-scale biorefinery process handling 100 metric tons BW per day modelled using Aspen Plus. The LCA results depicted that wastewater from anaerobic digestion (AD) (42.3-51 %) and cooling water utility (34.6-39.5 %), majorly from esterification, were the critical environmental hotspots for LA production. Low pH fermentation yielded the best results compared to neutral pH fermentation, with 11.4-11.5 % reduction in the overall environmental footprint. Moreover, process integration by pinch technology, which enhanced thermal efficiency and heat recovery within the process, led to a further reduction in the impacts by 7.2-7.34 %. Scenario and sensitivity analyses depicted that substituting ultrapure water with completely softened water and sustainable management of AD wastewater could further improve the environmental performance of the processes.

Abstract
To develop new animal feed sources and establish a sustainable food upcycling system, the material feasibility and feeding potential of fresh vegetable waste (FVW) were clarified in this study. First, the FVW output of wet markets in Hangzhou, China was tracked and predicted. The results showed that the retail waste ratio of FVW in wet markets reached 9.3 %, predicting that China's FVW will reach 9034 kt in 2030. Second, the study revealed that the nutritive value of FVW was comparable to that of traditional alfalfa feed, suitable for use as animal feed. However, we found a high probability of microbial contamination. Therefore, FVW should have stricter classification and collection methods. Under this premise, the feeding utilization potential of FVW in wet markets is large. In 2030, the crude protein content may replace 2737 kt of alfalfa, saving 7.7 E + 08 m3 of water and 75,018 ha of land.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass is a reliable feedstock for lactic acid fermentation, low product titers hamper the scale production of cellulosic lactic acid. In this study, a Densifying Lignocellulosic biomass with Chemicals (sulfuric acid) pretreatment based cellulosic lactic acid biorefinery system was developed and demonstrated from multi-dimensions of producing bacteria, fermentation modes, corn stover solid loadings, fermentation vessels, and product purification. Results suggested that several lactic acid bacteria exhibited high fermentation activity in high solid loading corn stover hydrolysates. Remarkably, simultaneous saccharification co-fermentation performed in 100-mL flasks enabled 210.1 g/L lactic acid from 40% solid loading corn stover hydrolysate. When simultaneous saccharification co-fermentation was performed in 3-L bioreactors, 157.4 g/L lactic acid was obtained from 35% solid loading corn stover hydrolysate. These obtained lactic acid titers are the highest reports until now when lignocellulosic biomasses are used as substrates, making it efficient for scale production of cellulosic lactic acid.

Abstract
The effective conversion and recycling of organic solid waste contribute to the resolution of widespread issues such as global environmental pollution, energy scarcity and resource depletion. The anaerobic fermentation technology provides for the effective treatment of organic solid waste and the generation of various products. The analysis, which is based on bibliometrics, concentrates on the valorisation of affordable and easily accessible raw materials with high organic matter content as well as the production of clean energy substances and high value-added platform products. The processing and application status of fermentation raw materials such as waste activated sludge, food waste, microalgae and crude glycerol are investigated. To analyse the status of the preparation and engineering applications of the products, the fermentation products biohydrogen, VFAs, biogas, ethanol, succinic acid, lactic acid, and butanol are employed as representatives. Simultaneously, the anaerobic biorefinery process with multiple product co-production is sorted out. Product co-production can reduce waste discharge, enhance resource recovery efficiency, and serve as a model for improving anaerobic fermentation economics.

Abstract
Organic solid waste (OSW) is not only a major source of environmental contamination, but also a vast store of useful materials due to its high concentration of biodegradable components that can be recycled. Composting has been proposed as an effective strategy for recycling OSW back into the soil in light of the necessity of a sustainable and circular economy. In addition, unconventional composting methods such as membrane-covered aerobic composting and vermicomposting have been reported more effective than traditional composting in improving soil biodiversity and promoting plant growth. This review investigates the current advancements and potential trends of using widely available OSW to produce fertilizers. At the same time, this review highlights the crucial role of additives such as microbial agents and biochar in the control of harmful substances in composting. Composting of OSW should include a complete strategy and a methodical way of thinking that can allow product development and decision optimization through interdisciplinary integration and data-driven methodologies. Future research will likely concentrate on the potential in controlling emerging pollutants, evolution of microbial communities, biochemical composition conversion, and the micro properties of different gases and membranes. Additionally, screening of functional bacteria with stable performance and exploration of advanced analytical methods for compost products are important for understanding the intrinsic mechanisms of pollutant degradation.

Abstract
Microbial lipids have recently attracted attention as an intriguing alternative for the biodiesel and oleochemical industries to achieve sustainable energy generation. However, large-scale lipid production remains limited due to the high processing costs. As multiple variables affect lipid synthesis, an up-to-date overview that will benefit researchers studying microbial lipids is necessary. In this review, the most studied keywords from bibliometric studies are first reviewed. Based on the results, the hot topics in the field were identified to be associated with microbiology studies that aim to enhance lipid synthesis and reduce production costs, focusing on the biological and metabolic engineering involved. The research updates and tendencies of microbial lipids were then analyzed in depth. In particular, feedstock and associated microbes, as well as feedstock and corresponding products, were analyzed in detail. Strategies for lipid biomass enhancement were also discussed, including feedstock adoption, value-added product synthesis, selection of oleaginous microbes, cultivation mode optimization, and metabolic engineering strategies. Finally, the environmental implications of microbial lipid production and possible research directions were presented.

Abstract
By optimizing the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, this study accomplished an improved level of humification and microbial diversity in the biodrying process of lignocellulosic biomass. The results demonstrated that C/N ratio of 20 accelerated the decomposition of refractory lignocellulose, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions and the production of highly mature fertilizer with a germination index of 119.0% and a humic index of 3.2. Moreover, C/N ratio of 20 was found to diversify microbial communities, including Pseudogracilibacillus, Sinibacillus, and Georgenia, which contributed to the decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass and the production of humic acid. Hence, it is recommended to regulate the C/N ratio to 20:1 during the biodrying of biogas residue and wood chips to promote the economic feasibility and bioresource recycling.

Abstract
Byproduct (acetate and ethanol) generation and carbon catabolite repression are two critical impediments to lactic acid production from the hemicellulose of lignocellulosic biomass. To reduce byproduct generations, acid pretreatment with high solid loading (solid-liquid ratio 1:7) of garden garbage was conducted. The byproduct yield was only 0.30 g/g during in the subsequent lactic acid fermentation from acid pretreatment liquid and 40.8% lower than that of low solid loading (0.48 g/g). Furthermore, semi-hydrolysis with low enzyme loading (10 FPU/g garden garbage cellulase) was conducted to regulate and reduce glucose concentration in the hydrolysate, thereby relieving carbon catabolite repression. During the lactic acid fermentation process, the xylose conversion rate was restored from 48.2% (glucose-oriented hydrolysis) to 85.7%, eventually achieving a 0.49 g/g lactic acid yield of hemicellulose. Additionally, RNA-seq revealed that semi-hydrolysis with low enzyme loading down-regulated the expression of ptsH and ccpA, thereby relieving carbon catabolite repression.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is an important chemical material facing rapid demand in recent years. The oriented fermentation of kitchen waste is a promising route for economic LA production. However, the refinement of LA from fermentation broth is a spiny issue. In this study, the performance of ultrafiltration (UF) process for the refinement of LA from the pre-microfiltered broth of kitchen waste fermentation was first investigated. The results showed that with 50 KDa polyethersulfone membrane, under the optimum pressure of 120 KPa, the pH of 6.0, and the backflushing mode with the deionized water for 3 min, the best performance was achieved with the chroma removal efficiency, turbidity removal efficiency, protein removal efficiency and total sugar removal efficiency of 54.3%, 89.8%, 71.7% and 58.5%, respectively, and LA recovery efficiency was 93.6%. The results indicated that the UF process could further effectively refine the pre-microfiltered broth of kitchen waste fermentation, and the combination of microfiltration and UF process is ideal for achieving desirable LA refinement performance. This study verified the feasibility of UF process in LA refinement from pre-microfiltered broth of kitchen waste fermentation, and based on the results, the further exploration of proper post-process to treat UF filtrate for obtaining LA product with higher quality should be explored in the future.

Abstract
Fermentation broth is plentiful with lactic acid, an important chemical applied in many fields, such as food processing, the chemical industry, and cosmetics. However, the purification of the lactic acid from the broth is still troublesome, when considering the economy. This study first investigated the purification performance of microfiltration (MF) membrane technology for a fermentation broth from kitchen waste. The effect of operation pressure, broth pH, and membrane flushing mode on the membrane filtration performance were investigated. In addition, the change in filtration performance over the increase in cycle time was also investigated. The results showed that under the optimum pressure of 100 KPa, pH of 6.0, and a backflushing mode with deionized water for 3 min, the best performance was achieved, with chroma removal, turbidity removal, protein removal and total sugar removal efficiencies of 60, 92.8, 57.64 and 32.93%, respectively. The results indicated that the MF process could be a desirable broth purification process to some extent, and it is promising in actual application. The MF process combined with other post-purification processes will form the ideal process system, which should be explored in future research.

Abstract
Microbial electrolysis cell-assisted thermophilic anaerobic digestion (MEC-TAD) is a promising method to improve anaerobic co-digestion efficiency; however, its application is restricted by high energy consumption. To improve the energy use efficiency of MEC-TAD, this study investigated the effect of different intermittent energization strategies on thermophilic co-digestion performance. Results revealed that an 18 h-ON/6h-OFF energization schedule resulted in the fastest electron transfer rate and the highest methane yield (364.3 mL/g VS). Mechanistic analysis revealed that 18 h-ON/6h-OFF resulted in the enrichment of electroactive microorganisms and increased abundance of enzyme-coding genes associated with energy metabolism (ntp, nuo, atp), electron transfer (pilA, nfrA2, ssuE), and the hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathway. Finally, energy balance analysis revealed that 18 h-ON/6h-OFF had the highest net energy benefit (2.52 kJ) and energy conversion efficiency (110.76 %). Therefore, intermittent energization of MEC-TAD using an 18 h-ON/6h-OFF schedule can provide improved performance and more energy savings.

Abstract
The valorization of organic solid waste to lactic acid (LA) in open fermentation systems has attracted tremendous interest in recent years. In this study, a highly efficient oriented LA bioconversion system from food waste (FW) in open mode was established. The maximum LA production was 115 g/L, with a high yield of 0.97 g-LA/g-total sugar. FW is a low-cost feedstock for LA production, containing indigenous hydrolysis and LA-producing bacteria (LAB). Saccharification and real-time pH control were found to be essential for maintaining LAB dominantly in open systems. Furthermore, microbial community analysis revealed that Enterococcus mundtii adapted to complex FW substrates and dominated the subsequent bioconversion process. The oriented LA bioconversion exhibited the capacity for biological carbon fixation by reducing CO2 emissions by at least 21 kg per ton of FW under anaerobic conditions.

Abstract
Effect of diverse Lactobacillus amylophilus, Geobacillus thermoleovorans, and Bacillus subtilis inoculation patterns on the co-composting performance of food waste and biogas residue was explored. Experimental results revealed that, compared to the single-stage inoculation and non-inoculation groups, the multistage inoculation pattern prolonged the thermophilic period during composting, consequently improving organic matter decomposition and humification [with a high germination index (120.9%)]. In addition, it could promote the development of humic substances [with a high humus index (4.3) and biological index (1.4)] and lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and ammonia (NH3). Additionally, it could improve the microbial variety and the amounts of functional bacteria (i.e., Chloroflexi) in compost, which might be advantageous for the decomposition of refractory organic materials and plant growth. Therefore, the multistage inoculation pattern is recommended for organic waste composting in terms of its gas emissions, compost quality and efficacy benefits.

Abstract
Although the composting-biotrickling filter coupled system removed ammonia-based odor pollution, other pollutants (nitrogen-rich wastewater) arose. This study intended to determine the effect of in-situ disposal of different kinds of nitrogen-rich wastewater [i.e., multi-nitrogen (NH4+, NO2-, and NO3-)-rich (STL1), NO2--rich (STL2), and NO3--rich (STL3)] as a moisture adjustment agent during the composting thermophilic period on nitrogen transformation. Results indicated that nitrogen-rich wastewater addition did not impair the compost maturation, whereas raised the total nitrogen content of fertilizer by 15.8%-46.7% compared to the control group (i.e., tap water group). Moreover, adding STL1 has the potential to reduce CO2 and NH3 emissions and avoid incomplete organic nitrogen decomposition. Furthermore, nitrogen flow analysis unveiled that STL1 addition increased nitrogen content by strengthening ammonification, dissimilatory nitrite reduction to ammonium, and high-temperature nitrification pathways. Thus, in-situ disposal of STL1 from biotrickling filters via composting is a suitable technique for coupled systems to achieve zero discharge.

Abstract
The methanogenic efficiency and system stability of anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW) and spent mushroom substance (SMS) are important for its application. A 90-day semi-continuous study was conducted to compare the co-digestion performance of an ethanologenic-methanogenic two-phase system and an acidogenic-methanogenic system using FW and SMS as substrates. The results showed that the ethanologenic-methanogenic system increased the contents of ethanol and acetate in the hydrolytic acidification phase. Microbial-community analysis showed that ethanologenic-methanogenic system enriched hydrolytic acidifying bacteria and methanogens such as Methanoculleus, resulting in an increase in the average methane yield of methanogenic phase by 1.91-2.43 times at the same organic loading rate (OLR = 3.0-4.0 g-VS·L-1·d-1). Metagenomic analysis indicated that the ethanologenic-methanogenic system increased the abundance of enzyme-encoding genes and promoted the degradation of acetate and CO2/H2, thereby enhancing methanogenic metabolic pathways, compared to the acidogenic-methanogenic system.
