Abstract
Enzymatic pretreatment is an effective method which can improve the anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency of household food waste (HFW). As an alternative to expensive commercial enzymes, mixed enzymes (MEs) produced in situ from HFW by solid-state fermentation (SSF) can greatly promote the hydrolysis rate of HFW and achieve advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) economically sustainable. In this paper, strategies for improving the efficiency of the enzyme-production process and the abundance of MEs are briefly discussed, including SSF, fungal co-cultivation, and stepwise fermentation. The feasibility of using HFW as an applicable substrate for producing MEs (amylase, protease, and lignocellulose-degrading enzymes) and its potential advantages in HFW anaerobic digestion are comprehensively illustrated. Based on the findings, an integrated AAD process of HFW pretreated with MEs produced in situ was proposed to maximise bioenergy recovery. The mass balance results showed that the total volatile solids removal rate could reach 98.56%. Moreover, the net energy output could reach 2168.62 MJ/t HFW, which is 9.79% higher than that without in situ-produced MEs and pretreatment. Finally, perspectives for further study are presented.

Abstract
High value-added products from organic waste fermentation have garnered increasing concern in modern society. VFAs are short-chain fatty acids, produced as intermediate products during the anaerobic fermentation of organic matter. VFAs can serve as an essential organic carbon source to produce substitutable fuels, microbial fats and oils, and synthetic biodegradable plastics et al. Extracting VFAs from the fermentation broths is a challenging task as the composition of suspensions is rather complex. In this paper, a comprehensive review of methods for VFAs production, extraction and separation are provided. Firstly, the methods to enhance VFAs production and significant operating parameters are briefly reviewed. Secondly, the evaluation and detailed discussion of various VFAs extraction and separation technologies, including membrane separation, complex extraction, and adsorption methods, are presented, highlighting their specific advantages and limitations. Finally, the challenges encountered by different separation technologies and novel approaches to enhance process performance are highlighted, providing theoretical guidance for recycling VFAs from organic wastes efficiently.

Abstract
This review addresses the critical issue of a rapidly increasing worldwide waste stream and the need for sustainable management. The paper proposes an integrated transformation toward a next-generation methanization process, which leads not only to treating waste but also to converting it into higher value compounds and greener energy. Although the current and commonly used anaerobic digestion process is useful for biogas production, it presents limitations of resource exploitation and some negative environmental impacts. Focusing on the acidogenic stage in waste stream processing, the paper discusses the recent strategies to enhance the recovery of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). These acids serve as precursors for synthesizing a variety of biochemicals and biofuels, offering higher value products than solely energy recovery and soil fertilizers. Additionally, the importance of recycling the fermentation residues back into the biorefinery process is highlighted. This recycling not only generates additional VFAs but also contributes to generating clean energy, thereby enhancing the overall sustainability and efficiency of the waste management system. Moreover, the review discusses the necessity to integrate life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) to evaluate the environmental impacts, sustainability, and processing costs of the proposed biorefinery.

Abstract
Recovery of resources from domestic sewage and food waste has always been an international-thorny problem. Titanium-based flocculation can achieve high-efficient destabilization, quick concentration and separation of organic matter from sewage to sludge. This study proposed co-fermentation of the titanium-flocculated sludge (Ti-loaded sludge) and food waste towards resource recovery by converting organic matter to value-added volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and inorganic matter to struvite and TiO2 nanoparticles. When Ti-loaded sludge and food waste were co-fermented at a mass ratio of 3:1, the VFAs yield reached 3725.2 mg-COD/L (VFAs/SCOD 91.0%), which was more than 4 times higher than the case of the sludge alone. The 48-day semicontinuous co-fermentation demonstrated stable long-term operation, yielding VFAs at 2529.0 mg-COD/L (VFAs/SCOD 89.8%) and achieving a high CODVFAs/NNH4 of 58.9. Food waste provided sufficient organic substrate, enriching plenty of acid-producing fermentation bacteria (such as Prevotella 7 about 21.0% and Bacteroides about 9.4%). Moreover, metagenomic sequencing analysis evidenced the significant increase of the relative gene abundance corresponding to enzymes in pathways, such as extracellular hydrolysis, substrates metabolism, and VFAs biosynthesis. After fermentation, the precious element P (≥ 99.0%) and extra-added element Ti (≥99.0%) retained in fermented residues, without releasing to VFAs supernatant, which facilitated the direct re-use of VFAs as resource. Through simple and commonly used calcination and acid leaching methodologies, 80.9% of element P and 82.1% of element Ti could be successfully recovered as struvite and TiO2 nanoparticles, respectively. This research provides a strategy for the co-utilization of domestic sludge and food waste, which can realize both reduction of sludge and recovery of resources.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the production of excess sludge. Chain-elongation (CE) fermentation presents a promising approach for carbon resource recovery from sludge, enabling the transformation of carbon into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). However, the impact of sulfate, commonly presents in sludge, on the CE process remains largely unexplored. In this study, batch tests for CE process of sludge anaerobic fermentation liquid (SAFL) under different SCOD/SO42- ratios were performed. The moderate sulfate reduction under the optimum SCOD/SO42- of 20:1 enhanced the n-caproate production, giving the maximum n-caproate concentration, selectivity and production rate of 5.49 g COD/L, 21.4% and 4.87 g COD/L/d, respectively. The excessive sulfate reduction under SCOD/SO42- ≤ 5 completely inhibited the CE process, resulting in almost no n-caproate generation. The variations in n-caproate production under different conditions of SCOD/SO42- were all well fitted with the modified Gompertz kinetic model. Alcaligenes and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 were the dominant genus-level biomarkers under moderate sulfate reduction (SCOD/SO42- = 20), which enhanced the n-caproate production by increasing the generation of acetyl-CoA and the hydrolysis of difficult biodegradable substances in SAFL. The findings presented in this work elucidate a strategy and provide a theoretical framework for the further enhancement of MCFAs production from excess sludge.

Abstract
Anaerobic fermentation of organic waste to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production is a relatively mature technology. VFAs can be used as a cheap and readily available carbon source by photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) to produce high value-added products, which are widely used in various applications. To better enhance the VFAs obtained from organic wastes for PSB to produce high value-added products, a comprehensive review is needed, which is currently not available. This review systematically summarizes the current status of microbial proteins, H2, poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) production by PSB utilizing VFAs as a carbon resource. Meanwhile, the metabolic pathways involved in the H2, PHB, CoQ10, and 5-ALA production by PSB were deeply explored. In addition, a systematic resource utilization pathway for PSB utilizing VFAs from anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes to produce high value-added products was proposed. Finally, the current challenges and priorities for future research were presented, such as the screening of efficient PSB strains, conducting large-scale experiments, high-value product separation, recovery, and purification, and the mining of metabolic pathways for the VFA utilization to generate high value-added products by PSB.

Abstract
Microbially driven anaerobic digestion (AD) processes are of immense interest due to their role in the biovalorization of biowastes into renewable energy resources. The function-versatile microbiome, interspecies syntrophic interactions, and trophic-level metabolic pathways are important microbial components of AD. However, the lack of a comprehensive understanding of the process hampers efforts to improve AD efficiency. This study presents a holistic review of research on the microbial and metabolic "black box" of AD processes. Recent research on microbiology, functional traits, and metabolic pathways in AD, as well as the responses of functional microbiota and metabolic capabilities to optimization strategies are reviewed. The diverse ecophysiological traits and cooperation/competition interactions of the functional guilds and the biomanipulation of microbial ecology to generate valuable products other than methane during AD are outlined. The results show that AD communities prioritize cooperation to improve functional redundancy, and the dominance of specific microbes can be explained by thermodynamics, resource allocation models, and metabolic division of labor during cross-feeding. In addition, the multi-omics approaches used to decipher the ecological principles of AD consortia are summarized in detail. Lastly, future microbial research and engineering applications of AD are proposed. This review presents an in-depth understanding of microbiome-functionality mechanisms of AD and provides critical guidance for the directional and efficient bioconversion of biowastes into methane and other valuable products.

Abstract
With China's recent commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, anaerobic digestion and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) have emerged as promising technologies for treating nitrogenous organic wastewater. Anaerobic digestion can convert organic matter into volatile fatty acids (VFAs), methane, and other chemicals, while anammox can efficiently remove nitrogen with minimal energy consumption. This study evaluates the principles and characteristics of enhanced chemical flocculation and bioflocculation, as well as membrane separation, for capturing organic matter. Additionally, the paper evaluates the production of acids and methane from anaerobic digestion, exploring the influence of various factors and the need for control strategies. The features, challenges, and concerns of partial nitrification-anammox (PN/A) and partial denitrification-anammox (PD/A) are also outlined. Finally, an integrated system that combined organic capture, anaerobic digestion, and anammox is proposed as a sustainable and effective solution for treating nitrogenous organic wastewater and recovering energy and resources.

Abstract
Corn stover (CS) is a promising feedstock for producing biomethane, that can replace diminishing fossil fuels. However, the recalcitrant structure of CS resulted in low degradability in anaerobic digestion (AD). Numerous studies investigated the pretreatment of CS before AD, but the insight mechanism of biomethanation enhancement is not fully revealed. Therefore, this study advanced low-temperature urea-hydrothermal pretreatment of CS, and the biomethane production, substance bioconversion, hydrolase activity, and metagenomic analysis were conducted to unravel the intrinsic mechanisms of pretreatment for the enhanced biomethanation. The results showed that the pretreatment improved 11.5% of the specific surface area of CS, providing 111.5% higher total volatile fatty acids and 19.9% higher reducing sugars than the control, potentially enriching more anaerobic microorganisms. As a result, the pretreated CS achieved 19.1% higher biomethane yield, 9.1% higher volatile solid removal rate, and 3 days shorter digestion time. The mass balance and microbial community succession analysis indicated that the pretreatment reinforced the biomethane conversion from carbohydrate, which was attributed to the rapid enrichment of hydrolytic acidification bacteria (g__unclassified_o__Bacteroidales) (33.2%) and mixotrophic archaea (Methanosarcina) (72.3%). Meanwhile, the activity of cellulase and xylanase was enhanced up to 23.7% and 66.7%. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the combined pretreatment of CS promoted methanogenesis by enhancing various CAZymes secretion (such as oligosaccharide-degrading enzymes), and functional genes expression of hydrolytic, acidification and acetate-methane pathways at days 1-5. The study indicated that the combined pretreatment could influence microbial composition and function by changing the physicochemical properties of the CS, thereby improving methanogenic performance.

Abstract
The study compares the potential to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) from sewage sludge, both raw and thermally pre-treated in two modes of operation. In batch mode, raw sludge at pH 8 obtained the highest maximum VFA yield (0.41 g COD-VFA/g CODfed) whereas pre-treated sludge achieved a lower value (0.27 g COD-VFA/g CODfed). The operation of 5-L continuous reactors showed that thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) did not have any significant influence on VFA yields, averaging 15.1 % g COD-VFA/g COD with raw sludge and 16.6 % g COD-VFA/g COD with pre-treated one. Microbial community analysis showed that phylum Firmicutes was predominant in both reactors and that the enzymatic profiles involved in VFA production were very similar regardless of the substrate fed.

Abstract
The purpose of the current study is to determine the effects of the replacement of cassava chips with winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) tubers (WBTs) on gas production parameters, in vitro degradability, and ruminal fermentation in ruminant diets. The study was performed using a 3 × 4 factorial arrangements and was designed using a completely random method. Factor A employed three various roughage sources that were frequently used by locals to feed ruminants: Oryza sativa L. (a1), Brachiaria ruziziensis (a2), and Pennisetum purpureum (a3). The levels of WBTs substitutions for cassava chips at 0%, 33%, 66%, and 100% in the diet were selected as factor B. The experiment's findings revealed that replacing the cassava chips in the diet with WBTs at levels of 66 and 100% enhanced the fermentation process by producing a high gas volume at 96 h when Ruzi grass (RZ) was used as the main source of roughage (p < 0.01). The interaction between the roughage source and WBTs showed that organic matter (OM) degradability improved markedly in the case of RZ grass in combination with WBTs at all levels. Both the total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) at 8 h of incubation and the average value decreased when a complete substitution of casava chips with WBT (WBT 100%) was employed or when employing rice straw as the main source of roughage (p < 0.01). There was no interaction between WBTs and roughage source on the ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) concentration (ml/dL) and rumen microbial count (p > 0.05). In summary, WBTs can be used effectively when combined with grass (Ruzi and Napier). The implementation of WBTs as a novel alternative feed may effectively replace cassava chips without affecting rumen function.

Abstract
To resolve environmental problems associated with rice straw and silage effluent disposal, silage effluent pretreating rice straw for the anaerobic production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was investigated. To prevent the lactic acid bacteria in silage effluent from inhibiting anaerobic fermentation, four phenyllactic acid (PLA) levels were set (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 mg/kg). The total VFA yields of treatments pretreated only with silage effluent (CK) were higher than the groups combined with PLA during 15 days fermentation. Compared to PLA treatments, the total VFA of CK increased by 11.4 % ∼ 25.1 % on day 15. The CK showed higher lactic and propionic acid contents and lower pH values (<4.9). The PLA treatments decreased Lactobacillus abundance while increasing bacterial richness and evenness, and acetic and butyric acid contents. These demonstrated silage effluent has the potential to be used as a biological pretreatment for VFA production in anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract
This study provided novel insights into the effects of organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge. The obtained maximum methane (CH4) yield of 328 ± 4 mL CH4/g CODfed at HRT of 15 days (OLR = 5.8 g VS/L/d) was partly attributable to the enhanced acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis phases. The increased key enzyme activities, particularly acetate kinase (improved by 5.2-fold), providing substantial methanogenic substrates for efficient CH4 production. The functional syntrophs that were related to syntrophic decarboxylation, novel acetate oxidation & reductive acetyl-CoA, and β-oxidation pathways could drive trophic interactions with methanogens. This markedly stimulated hydrogenotrophic Methanoculleus thermophilus metabolism and concomitantly enriched mixotrophic Methanosarcina thermophila. The distinctive cross-feeding interspecies interactions significantly affected the assembly and dynamics of thermophilic consortia. These findings shed light on the physicochemical and microbial mechanisms of HRT- and OLR-dependent enhancement of methanogenesis.

Abstract
To analyze the state of anaerobic digestion (AD), fast detection models of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were constructed using near-infrared transmission spectroscopy combined with partial least squares regression to measure concentrations of the acetic acid (AA), propionic acid (PA) and total acid (TA) in biogas slurry. CARS-SA-BPSO algorithm was proposed based on competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and simulated annealing binary particle swarm optimization algorithm (SA-BPSO) for selecting feature wavelengths of the AA, PA and TA. Regression models were established with the determination coefficient of prediction (Rp2) of 0.989, root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.111 and residual predictive deviation (RPD) of 9.706 for AA; Rp2 of 0.932, RMSEP of 0.116 and RPD of 3.799 for PA; Rp2 of 0.895, RMSEP of 0.689 and RPD of 3.676 for TA. It is sufficient to meet the fast detection needs of the AA and PA concentrations in biogas slurry, and basically meet the measuring demand of the TA concentration. CARS-SA-BPSO effectively improves the performance of the calibration model using sensitive wavelength selections, which provides theoretical support for establishing the spectral quantitative regression model to meet the requirements of practical application.

<p>The increasing demand for free-range poultry products has led to a surge in their availability in the market, prompting a potential decline in premium prices associated with these products. This shift places considerable pressure on upstream costs in chicken production. A comprehensive under-standing of its impact on the environment is essential to ensure the success of commercial and industrial free-range chicken production. However, there exists a significant knowledge gap concerning the emission and concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from organic-free range chicken, and their environmental implications have yet to be understood. We aim to address this critical knowledge gap by elucidating the role of VOC emissions in chicken production and assessing their impact on human and animal health, as well as environmental challenges. Understanding the implications of VOC emissions is essential for promoting sustainable and responsible free-range chicken farming practices. By identifying the sources of VOC emissions and their impacts, stakeholders can implement appropriate measures to optimize air quality and enhance the well-being of chickens and workers. Ultimately, this review highlights the role of VOCs in animal production, providing valuable insights for improving the efficiency, environmental sustainability and welfare aspects of free-range chicken farming.</p>

Abstract
Cyanobacteria-derived biofuels can be helpful in achieving a circular bioeconomy. To increase the production of biodiesel/bioethanol from cyanobacterium, Pseudanabaena mucicola GO0704, mixotrophic cultivation using volatile fatty acid (VFA), a cheap organic carbon source, was performed. The treatment of butyric acid or acetic acid enhanced the cell growth, particularly, the dry weight of the butyric acid-treated cells was 2.30-fold higher than the control. The enhancement of the growth led to the increase of metabolite (i.e., lipid and carbohydrate) productions, resulting in high amount of biodiesel and bioethanol to be produced. Butyric acid was more effective compared to acetic acid and the productions of biodiesel (52.2 mg/L) and bioethanol (132.6 mg/L) from the butyric acid-treated P. mucicola GO0704 were 2.34- and 2.17-fold higher compared to the control, respectively. This study will provide a foundation to commercialize the cyanobacteria-based carbon-neutral fuels, and ultimately, achieve a circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
Introduction The crude protein level in the diet will affect the fermentation parameters, microflora, and metabolites in the rumen of ruminants. It is of great significance to study the effect of crude protein levels in supplementary diet on microbial community and metabolites for improving animal growth performance. At present, the effects of crude protein level in supplementary diet on rumen fermentation parameters, microbial community, and metabolites of Jersey-Yak (JY) are still unclear. Methods The purpose of this experiment was to study the appropriate crude protein level in the diet of JY. The rumen fermentation indexes (volatile fatty acids and pH) were determined by supplementary diets with crude protein levels of 15.16 and 17.90%, respectively, and the microbial community and metabolites of JYs were analyzed by non-target metabonomics and metagenome sequencing technology, and the changes of rumen fermentation parameters, microbial flora, and metabolites in the three groups and their interactions were studied. Results and Discussion The crude protein level in the supplementary diet had significant effects on pH, valeric acid, and the ratio of acetic acid to propionic acid (p < 0.05). The protein level had no significant effect on the dominant microflora at the phylum level (p > 0.05), and all three groups were Bacteroides and Firmicutes. The results of metabolite analysis showed that the crude protein level of supplementary diet significantly affected the metabolic pathways such as Bile secretion and styrene degradation (p < 0.05), and there were different metabolites between the LP group and HP group, and these different metabolites were related to the dominant microbial to some extent. To sum up, in this experiment, the effects of crude protein level in supplementary diet on rumen microorganisms and metabolites of JY and their relationship were studied, which provided the theoretical basis for formulating a more scientific and reasonable supplementary diet in the future.

Abstract
The modification sequence of chemical (CaO) and biological (liquid fraction of digestate, LFD) for augmenting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from rice straw was investigated in this study. The coupling order of the modifiers influenced acidification performance, and simultaneous modification (CaO-LFD) was superior to other modes. The highest VFAs production was obtained in CaO-LFD, 51% higher than that in the LFD-first additional modification. The CaO-LFD demonstrated the highest selectivity of acetate production, accounting for 79% of the total VFAs. In addition, CaO-LFD modification changed the direction of the domestication of fermentative bacteria and increased populations of the key anaerobes (Atopostipes sp.) responsible for acidification. The synergistic effect of CaO and LFD was revealed, namely, the effective function of CaO in degrading recalcitrant rice straw, the promotion of transport/metabolism of carbohydrates and acetogenesis by LFD.

Abstract
The threshold salt concentration to inhibit the anaerobic digestion (AD) has been intensively investigated, but its insight mechanism is not fully revealed. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the effect of salinity on acidogenesis and methanogenesis and its mechanism. Results showed that low salinity level (i.e. 0.6%) had stimulatory effect on volatile fatty acids (VFA) and methane production, while significant inhibition was observed with further increased salinity. Moreover, high salinity limited the butyric acid degradation at acidogenesis process. The decreases of enzymes (AK and PTA) activity and functional genes (ackA, pta and ACOX) expression that related to β-oxidation explained the butyric acid accumulation at high salinity levels. Microbial community analysis revealed high salinity levels significantly inhibited the proliferation of Syntrophomonas sp., which are known to be associated with butyric acid degradation. Similarly, the relative abundance of acetoclastic methanogen (Methanothrix sp.) and methylotrophic methanogen (Methanolinea sp.) significantly decreased at salinity condition.

Abstract
Orange peel waste (OPW) and sewage sludge (SS) valorization for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from anaerobic co-fermentation are attractive and feasible. The highest VFAs reached 11996.3 mg COD/L within 10 d at the mass ratio (TS/TS) of 1:1, which was approximately 30-fold of that in sole SS fermentation. The OPW provided plenty of organic substrates and facilitated the fermentation processes by disintegrating SS structure and inhibiting methanogenesis due to the abundant limonene. Also, the OPW feeds reshaped the microbial community and enriched fermentative bacteria, especially those saccharolytic ones (i.e. Prevotella-7). The key genes involved in membrane transport (i.e. ptsG), glycolysis (i.e. pgk), pyruvate metabolism (i.e. ace), and fatty acid biosynthesis (i.e. accA), which are associated with VFAs biosynthesis, were up-regulated in OPW/SS reactors. Overall, it was the increase in bioavailable organic matter and functional microorganisms, and the simultaneous enhancement of metabolic activity that improved the efficient VFAs production.
