Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is the important biodegradable plastic, however, biodegradation of PHA waste in anaerobic environments emits more CH4, a potent greenhouse gas. Bioconversion of PHA waste to useful byproducts - volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is a practical method to upcycle carbon from PHA. In this study, PHA waste was anaerobically co-digested with swine manure (SM) (the typical high nitrogen waste) at different C/N ratios. The results indicate that co-digestion of PHA and SM with a C/N ratio of 32.1 achieved VFA production of 5488 mg COD/L and 0.20 g COD/g VS. No significant differences were found in terms of the highest VFA concentrations between treatments with C/N ratios of 43.4 and 32.1. VFA produciton of 3655 mg COD/L and 0.14 g COD/g VS was achieved at 19 days by adjusting the C/N ratio to 19.2. Four bacteria were identified as dominant microorganisms responsible for converting PHA and SM to VFA.

Abstract
Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are presenting new challenges for their reutilization. This work found that volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production by co-fermentation of BPs with waste activated sludge (WAS) reached 4-37 times of the WAS fermentation alone, which was further amplified by pH regulation (especially alkaline regulation). Moreover, the VFAs composition is highly associated with BPs category. By contrast, the traditional plastic showed a limited effect on the VFAs yield and composition. Alkaline regulation enhanced the breakdown of BPs' ester bonds and boosted WAS disintegration, increasing bioavailable substrates. The hydrolytic-acidogenic anaerobes (i.e., Serpentinicella and Proteiniclasticum) and the major metabolic processes participated in the transformation of BPs and WAS to VFAs were upregulated under alkaline conditions. Further exploration unveiled that quorum sensing and peptidoglycan synthesis played important roles in counteracting alkaline stress and maintaining microbial activity for effective VFAs generation. The works demonstrated the effectiveness of pH-regulated anaerobic co-fermentation for BPs valorization.

Abstract
The transition from traditional wastewater treatment plants to biorefineries represents an environmentally and economically sustainable approach to extracting valuable compounds from waste. Sewage sludge produced from wastewater treatment is incinerated or disposed of in specific landfills. Repurposing this waste material to recover valuable resources could help lower disposal costs and reduce environmental impact by producing other beneficial polymers. Microorganisms present in the sewage sludge can ferment organic pollutants, producing volatile fatty acids (VFA), precursors for biopolymers that could be used as an alternative to petroleum-derived plastics. To boost VFA production during sewage sludge fermentation, it is necessary to understand the operating microbial community and its metabolic capacities in anaerobic conditions. This study presents the influence of the headspace volume on the microbial community and the VFA production to define the best operational parameters in a 225 L pilot plant fermenter. The wasted sewage sludge was withdrawn from an oxic-settling-anaerobic plant that collected wastewater from the canteen and dormitory of the UNIPA Campus (Palermo University, Italy) and incubated using a 40% and a 60% headspace volume. The microbial community was analysed before and after the fermentation process through metataxonomic analysis, and VFA yields were determined by gas chromatography analysis. Our results showed that the 40% headspace volume induced a tenfold higher VFA production than the 60% headspace volume, modulating the microbial community's efforts to establish a VFA-producing factory. Notably, at 40% headspace, the relative abundance of bacteria, like Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi, significantly increased, as well as the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Verrucomicrobia decreased during the fermentation process. This result is consistent with the selection of efficient VFA-producing bacteria that lead to increased VFA yields that are not obtained at 60% headspace. Thus, reducing headspace is a promising strategy that can be implemented, even in full-scale plants, to optimise the wastewater reuse process and maximise VFA production to produce bioplastics, like polyhydroxyalkanoate, for the transition from linear wastewater treatment plants to circular biorefineries.

Abstract
This study evaluates the anaerobic mesophilic mono- and co-digestion of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) plastic bottles as a proxy for rigid packaging materials. Initial tests showed a 97.3 ± 0.2 % reduction in weight and an observable alteration in the surface (thinning, color fading and pitting) of the PHBH bottles after eight weeks. Subsequent tests showed that PHBH squares (3 × 3 cm) produced 400 NmL-CH4/g-VSfed, at a slower rate compared to powdered PHBH but with similar methane yield. Co-digestion experiments with food waste, swine manure, or sewage sludge showed successful digestion of PHBH alongside organic waste (even at a high bioplastic loading of 20 % volatile solids basis), with methane production comparable to or slightly higher than that observed in mono-digestion. Molecular analyses suggested that the type of co-substrate influenced microbial activity and that methane production was mainly driven by hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. These results suggest the potential for integrating rigid PHBH packaging into anaerobic digesters.

Abstract
The coupling of thermal remediation with microbial reductive dechlorination (MRD) has shown promising potential for the cleanup of chlorinated solvent contaminated sites. In this study, thermal treatment and bioaugmentation were applied in series, where prior higher thermal remediation temperature led to improved TCE dechlorination performance with both better organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) colonization and electron donor availability. The 60 °C was found to be a key temperature point where the promotion effect became obvious. Amplicon sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that temperature was a more dominating factor than bioaugmentation that impacted microbial community structure. Higher temperature of prior thermal treatment resulted in the decrease of richness, diversity of indigenous microbial communities, and simplified the network structure, which benefited the build-up of newcoming microorganisms during bioaugmentation. Thus, the abundance of Desulfitobacterium increased from 0.11 % (25 °C) to 3.10 % (90 °C). Meanwhile, released volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during thermal remediation functioned as electron donors and boosted MRD. Our results provided temperature-specific information on synergistic effect of sequential thermal remediation and bioaugmentation, which contributed to better implementation of the coupled technologies in chloroethene-impacted sites.

Abstract
Recently, diversifying the material, method, and application in food packaging has been massively developed to find more environment-friendly materials. However, the mechanical and barrier properties of the bioplastics are major hurdles to expansion in commercial realization. The compositional variation with the inclusion of different fillers could resolve the lacking performance of the bioplastic. This review summarizes the various reinforcement fillers and their effect on bioplastic development. In this review, we first discussed the status of bioplastics and their definition, advantages, and limitations regarding their performance in the food packaging application. Further, the overview of different fillers and development methods has been discussed thoroughly. The application of reinforced bioplastic for food packaging and its effect on food quality and shelf life are highlighted. The environmental issues, health concerns, and future perspectives of the reinforced bioplastic are also discussed at the end of the manuscript. Adding different fillers into the bioplastic improves physical, mechanical, barrier, and active properties, which render the required protective functions to replace conventional plastic for food packaging applications. Various fillers, such as natural and chemically synthesized, could be incorporated into the bioplastic, and their overall properties improve significantly for the food packaging application.

Abstract
To establish a circular economy, waste streams should be used as a resource to produce valuable products. Biodegradable plastic waste represents a potential feedstock to be microbially recycled via a carboxylate platform. Bioplastics such as polylactic acid food packaging waste (PLA-FPW) are theoretically suitable feedstocks for producing carboxylates. Once feasible, carboxylates such as acetate, n-butyrate, or n-caproate can be used for various applications like lubricants or building blocks for making new bioplastics. In this study, pieces of industrial compostable PLA-FPW material (at 30 or 60 g/L) were added to a watery medium with microbial growth nutrients. This broth was exposed to 70 °C for a pretreatment process to support the hydrolysis of PLA into lactic acid at a maximum rate of 3.0 g/L×d. After 21 days, the broths of the hydrolysis experiments were centrifugated and a part of the supernatant was extracted and prepared for anaerobic fermentation. The mixed microbial culture, originating from a food waste fermentation bioprocess, successfully fermented the hydrolyzed PLA into a spectrum of new C2-C6 multi-carbon carboxylates. n-butyrate was the major product for all fermentations and, on average, 6.5 g/L n-butyrate was obtained from 60 g/L PLA-FPW materials. The wide array of products were likely due to various microbial processes, including lactate conversion into acetate and propionate, as well as lactate-based chain elongation to produce medium-chain carboxylates. The fermentation process did not require pH control. Overall, we showed a proof-of-concept in using real bioplastic waste as feedstock to produce valuable C2-C6 carboxylates via microbial recycling.

Abstract
The effect of alkali-based pretreatment on the methanization of bioplastics was investigated. The tested bioplastics included PHB [poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)], PHBH [poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate)], PHBV [poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate], PLA (polylactic acid), and a PLA/PCL [poly(caprolactone)] 80/20 blend. Prior to methanization tests, the powdered polymers (500-1000 μm) at a concentration of 50 g/L were subjected to alkaline pretreatment using NaOH 1 M for PLA and PLA/PCL, and NaOH 2 M for PHB-based materials. Following 7 days of pretreatment, the amount of solubilized carbon for PLA and its blend accounted for 92-98% of the total initial carbon, while lower carbon recoveries were recorded for most PHB-based materials (80-93%), as revealed by dissolved total organic carbon analysis. The pretreated bioplastics were then tested for biogas production by means of mesophilic biochemical methane potential tests. Compared to unpretreated PHBs, methanization rates of pretreated PHBs were accelerated by a factor of 2.7 to 9.1 with comparable (430 NmL CH4/g material feed) or slightly lower (15% in the case of PHBH) methane yields, despite featuring a 1.4-2.3 times longer lag phases. Both materials, PLA and the PLA/PCL blend, were only extensively digested when pretreated, yielding about 360-380 NmL CH4 per gram of material fed. Unpretreated PLA-based materials showed nearly zero methanization under the timeframe and experimental conditions tested. Overall, the results suggested that alkaline pretreatment can help to enhance the methanization kinetics of bioplastics.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) polymers are emerging within biobased biodegradable plastic products. To build a circular economy, effective recycling routes should be established for these and other end-of-life bioplastics. This study presents the first steps of a potential PHA recycling route by fermenting hydrolyzed PHA-based bioplastics (Tianan ENMATTM Y1000P; PHBV (poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)) into carboxylates acetate and butyrate. First, three different hydrolysis pretreatment methods under acid, base, and neutral pH conditions were tested. The highest 10% (from 158.8 g COD/L to 16.3 g COD/L) of hydrolysate yield was obtained with the alkaline pretreatment. After filtration to remove the remaining solid materials, 4 g COD/L of the hydrolyzed PHA was used as the substrate with the addition of microbial nutrients for mixed culture fermentation. Due to microbial conversion, 1.71 g/L acetate and 1.20 g/L butyrate were produced. An apparent complete bioconversion from intermediates such as 3-hydroxybutyrate (3-HB) and/or crotonate into carboxylates was found. The overall yields of the combined processes were calculated as 0.07 g acetate/g PHA and 0.049 g butyrate/g PHA. These produced carboxylates can theoretically be used to reproduce PHA or serve many other applications as part of the so-called carboxylate platform.

Abstract
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced by acidogenic digestion of sewage sludge are very interesting bio-products which can contribute to carbon neutrality of wastewater treatment plants. Studies on the production of VFAs from sewage sludge from fermenters with membrane are limited. In view of above, VFAs from a fermenter pilot plant equipped with a membrane bioreactor and fed with real sewage sludge has been monitored. The effect of headspace volume (HdV) on VFA production was studied for the first time to elucidate the optimal operation conditions. Specifically, three fermenter HdV values (namely, 20, 40 and 60% of the total volume) have been investigated. Results revealed that the HdV of 20% ensured the highest sCOD production (900 mgCOD/L) and VFA/COD ratio (45.4%). High value of HdV (namely, 40 and 60%) strongly decreased the acidogenic fermentation performance in terms of VFA production.
