Effect of Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation on manganese passivation and microbial community succession during electrical manganese residue composting

Enhanced green remediation and refinement disposal of electrolytic manganese residue using air-jet milling and horizontal-shaking leaching

The reclamation and reuse of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) as a bulk hazard solid waste are limited by its residual ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and manganese (Mn2+). This work adopts a co-processing strategy comprising air-jet milling (AJM) and horizontal-shaking leaching (HSL) for refining and leaching disposal of NH4+-N and Mn2+ in EMR. Results indicate that the co-use of AJM and HSL could significantly enhance the leaching of NH4+-N and Mn2+ in EMR. Under optimal milling conditions (50 Hz frequency, 10 min milling time, 12 h oscillation time, 400 rpm rate, 30 ℃ temperature, and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:30), NH4+-N and Mn2+ leaching efficiencies were optimized to 96.73% and 97.35%, respectively, while the fineness of EMR was refined to 1.78 µm. The leaching efficiencies of NH4+-N and Mn2+ were 58.83% and 46.96% higher than those attained without AJM processing. The AJM used strong airflow to give necessary kinetic energy to EMR particles, which then collided and sifted to become refined particles. The AJM disposal converted kinetic energy into heat energy upon particle collisions, causing EMR phase transformation, and particularly hydrated sulfate dehydration. The work provides a fire-new and high-efficiency method for significantly and simply leaching NH4+-N and Mn2+ from EMR.

The synergistic regulation of sewage sludge biodrying and greenhouse gas reduction by additives

As a dewatering method of high moisture solid waste sludge, biodrying still faces environmental problems such as material loss and greenhouse gas emission in the process of treatment. In this study, biochar and magnesium chloride were used to explore the synergistic effect of enhancing sludge biodrying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The highest temperature of biodrying was raised to 68.2 °C within 3 days, extending the longest high-temperature period to 5 days, which reduced the water content to 28.8 % in the single addition of biochar treatment. The complex addition increased the NH4+-N content of materials by 57.49 % and decreased the NO3--N content of materials by 40.62 %. The use of additives significantly reduced the emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O compared to the no-addition treatment. The increase in dominant Actinomycetes and Chloroflexibacter was the main reason for the reduction in gas emissions.

Sulfur-aided aerobic biostabilization of swine manure and sawdust mixture: Humification and carbon loss

To investigate how sulfur addition affects humification and carbon loss during swine manure (SM) biostabilisation, various proportions of sulfur, i.e., 0 (CK), 0.2%-0.8% (S1-S4) were added to SM in a 70-day pilot-scale test. Compared to CK (16.07%), sulfur addition resulted in the mineralization of 17.05%-24.27% of the total organic carbon. Sulfur addition also reduced CH4 emissions, which were 3.7%-29.3% lower than that of CK. The total global warming potential values were in the range of 913.1-968.2 g CO2 eq kg-1 for all treatments. Although the sulfur-added treatments showed lower HA/FA ratios than CK after 70 days, no significant impact on the maturity of the final products was observed. Sulfur addition impacted the microbial community, CH4, CO2, N2O emissions, and affected the variation of temperature in biowaste biostabilization. These discoveries provided an important basis for understanding the function of sulfur in regulating the aerobic bio-decomposition of organic waste.

Effect of the inoculation of Phanerochaete chrysosporium on nitrogen migration and organic matter conversion during electrolytic manganese residue composting

Composting has made it practicable to dispose electrolytic manganese residues (EMR) in a less toxic way, nevertheless, the decomposition and the loss of nitrogen is a critical issue. This study aimed to investigate the role of Phanerochaete chrysosporium (PC) inoculation on nitrogen migration and promotion of decomposing organic matter (OM), as well as the effect on bacterial community structure during EMR composting. The results exhibited that nitrogen loss tallied with the first-order kinetic model. PC inoculation increased the relative microbial abundance of Firmicutes, which improved the efficiency of nitrogen nitrification and OM degradation, and increased the germination index and total nitrogen content by 13.8% and 2.95 g/kg, respectively. Moreover, aromatic benzenes replaced heteropolysaccharides, alcohols and ethers as the main components of OM in fertilizer, leading up to a more stable humus structure. This study provides a rationale and a novel perspective on the resource and nutrient conservation of EMR-contaminated soils.

From waste to wealth: Innovations in organic solid waste composting

Organic solid waste (OSW) is not only a major source of environmental contamination, but also a vast store of useful materials due to its high concentration of biodegradable components that can be recycled. Composting has been proposed as an effective strategy for recycling OSW back into the soil in light of the necessity of a sustainable and circular economy. In addition, unconventional composting methods such as membrane-covered aerobic composting and vermicomposting have been reported more effective than traditional composting in improving soil biodiversity and promoting plant growth. This review investigates the current advancements and potential trends of using widely available OSW to produce fertilizers. At the same time, this review highlights the crucial role of additives such as microbial agents and biochar in the control of harmful substances in composting. Composting of OSW should include a complete strategy and a methodical way of thinking that can allow product development and decision optimization through interdisciplinary integration and data-driven methodologies. Future research will likely concentrate on the potential in controlling emerging pollutants, evolution of microbial communities, biochemical composition conversion, and the micro properties of different gases and membranes. Additionally, screening of functional bacteria with stable performance and exploration of advanced analytical methods for compost products are important for understanding the intrinsic mechanisms of pollutant degradation.

Effect of biodrying of lignocellulosic biomass on humification and microbial diversity

By optimizing the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, this study accomplished an improved level of humification and microbial diversity in the biodrying process of lignocellulosic biomass. The results demonstrated that C/N ratio of 20 accelerated the decomposition of refractory lignocellulose, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions and the production of highly mature fertilizer with a germination index of 119.0% and a humic index of 3.2. Moreover, C/N ratio of 20 was found to diversify microbial communities, including Pseudogracilibacillus, Sinibacillus, and Georgenia, which contributed to the decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass and the production of humic acid. Hence, it is recommended to regulate the C/N ratio to 20:1 during the biodrying of biogas residue and wood chips to promote the economic feasibility and bioresource recycling.

Regulating pH and Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation improved the humification and succession of fungal community at the cooling stage of composting

This study aimed to explore the effect of regulating pH and Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation at the cooling stage of composting on the lignocellulose degradation, humification process and related precursors as well as fungal community for secondary fermentation. Results showed that composting with P. chrysosporium inoculation and pH regulation (T4) had 58% cellulose decomposition, 73% lignin degradation and improved enzyme activities for lignin decomposition. There was 81.98% increase of humic substance content and more transformation of polyphenols and amino acids in T4 compared to control. Inoculating P. chrysosporium affected the fungal community diversity, and regulating pH helped to increase the colonization of P. chrysosporium. Network analysis showed that the network complexity and synergy between microorganisms was improved in T4. Correlation and Random Forest analysis suggested that enriched Phanerochaete and Thermomyces in the mature stage of T4 were key taxa for lignocellulose degradation, and humic acid formation by accumulating precursors.
