Fabrication of a carbon fiber paper as the electrode and its application toward developing a sensitive unmediated amperometric biosensor

Generation of a Highly Efficient Electrode for Ethanol Oxidation by Simply Electrodepositing Palladium on the Oxygen Plasma-Treated Carbon Fiber Paper

In this study, a highly efficient carbon-supported Pd catalyst for the direct ethanol fuel cell was developed by electrodepositing nanostructured Pd on oxygen plasma-treated carbon fiber paper (Pd/pCFP). The oxygen plasma treatment has been shown to effectively remove the surface organic contaminants and add oxygen species onto the CFP to facilitate the deposition of nano-structured Pd on the surface of carbon fibers. Under the optimized and controllable electrodeposition method, nanostructured Pd of ~10 nm can be easily and evenly deposited onto the CFP. The prepared Pd/pCFP electrode exhibited an extraordinarily high electrocatalytic activity towards ethanol oxidation, with a current density of 222.8 mA mg−1 Pd. Interestingly, the electrode also exhibited a high tolerance to poisoning species and long-term stability, with a high ratio of the forward anodic peak current density to the backward anodic peak current density. These results suggest that the Pd/pCFP catalyst may be a promising anodic material for the development of highly efficient direct alcohol fuel cells.

Electrochemical detection of bisphenols in food: A review

Bisphenols (BPs) are worldwide used organic compounds in plastics, belonging to the group of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which exhibits endocrine disruption to beings. Migration of BPs from food contact materials like plastic containers, epoxy coatings in metal cans and thermal papers, would results in bioaccumulation of BPs in human beings, causing adverse health effects. Therefore, sensitive and selective determination of BPs in food is needed. Among different strategies have been explored for the detection of BPs, electrochemical sensors with relatively high sensitivity and fast response are promising. This paper is devoted to comprehensively review the developed electrochemical methods for BPs sensing in food, so that to find a direction for developing low cost, high accuracy and compatibility sensors toward the sensitive and selective detection of BPs. Different electrochemical technologies categorized by recognition agents, aptamers, enzymes, molecularly imprinted polymers and nanomaterials are discussed and summarized in their mechanisms, usages, merits and limitations. The challenges and further perspectives in the development of electrochemical sensors is also discussed.

Analytical performance of functional nanostructured biointerfaces for sensing phenolic compounds

Electrochemical biointerfaces are constructed with a wide range of nanomaterials and conducting polymers that strongly affect the analytical performance of biosensors. The analysis of progress toward electrochemical sensing platforms offers opportunities to provide devices for commercial use. The investigation of different methods for the synthesis of phenol biointerfaces leads to design challenges in the field of monitoring phenolic compounds. This paper review the innovative strategies and feature techniques in the construction of phenolic compound biosensors. The focus was made on the preparation methods of nanostructures and nanomaterials design for catalytic improvements of sensing interfaces. The paper also provides a comprehensive overview in the field of enzyme immobilization approaches at solid supports and technical formation of polymer nanocomposites, as well as applications of hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites in phenolic biosensors. This review also highlights the recent progress in the electrochemical detection of phenolic compounds and summarizes analytical performance parameters including sensitivity, storage stability, limit of detection, linear range, and Michaelis-Menten kinetic analysis. It also emphasizes advances from the past decade including technical challenges for the construction of suitable biointerfaces for monitoring phenolic compounds.

Advances in sensing and biosensing of bisphenols: A review

Bisphenols (BPs) are well known endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that cause adverse effects on the environment, biotic life and human health. BPs have been studied extensively because of an increasing concern for the safety of the environment and for human health. They are major raw materials for manufacturing polycarbonates, thermal papers and epoxy resins and are considered hazardous environmental contaminants. A vast array of sensors and biosensors have been developed for the sensitive screening of BPs based on carbon nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphene and graphene oxide), quantum dots, metal and metal oxide nanocomposites, polymer nanocomposites, metal organic frameworks, ionic liquids and molecularly imprinted polymers. This review is devoted mainly to a variety of sensitive, selective and reliable sensing and biosensing methods for the detection of BPs using electrochemistry, fluorescence, colorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, luminescence, ELISAs, circular dichroism, resonance Rayleigh scattering and adsorption techniques in plastic products, food samples, food packaging, industrial wastes, pharmaceutical products, human body fluids and many other matrices. It summarizes the advances in sensing and biosensing methods for the detection of BPs since 2010. Furthermore, the article discusses challenges and future perspectives in the development of novel sensing methods for the detection of BP analogs.

Freestanding and flexible graphene papers as bioelectrochemical cathode for selective and efficient CO2 conversion

During microbial electrosynthesis (MES) driven CO₂ reduction, cathode plays a vital role by donating electrons to microbe. Here, we exploited the advantage of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) paper as novel cathode material to enhance electron transfer between the cathode and microbe, which in turn facilitated CO₂ reduction. The acetate production rate of Sporomusa ovata-driven MES reactors was 168.5 ± 22.4 mmol m⁻² d⁻¹ with RGO paper cathodes poised at −690 mV versus standard hydrogen electrode. This rate was approximately 8 fold faster than for carbon paper electrodes of the same dimension. The current density with RGO paper cathodes of 2580 ± 540 mA m⁻² was increased 7 fold compared to carbon paper cathodes. This also corresponded to a better cathodic current response on their cyclic voltammetric curves. The coulombic efficiency for the electrons conversion into acetate was 90.7 ± 9.3% with RGO paper cathodes and 83.8 ± 4.2% with carbon paper cathodes, respectively. Furthermore, more intensive cell attachment was observed on RGO paper electrodes than on carbon paper electrodes with confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. These results highlight the potential of RGO paper as a promising cathode for MES from CO₂.

Two-Dimensional Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheet Composites Embedded with Au Nanoclusters: A Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Aptasensor toward Detecting Cocaine

Two-dimensional (2D) zirconium-based metal-organic framework nanosheets embedded with Au nanoclusters (denoted as 2D AuNCs@521-MOF) were prepared via a one-pot method under mild conditions. The optimized 2D AuNCs@521-MOF nanosheets not only possessed high specific surface area, physicochemical stability, and good electrochemical activity but also exhibited strong bioaffinity toward biomolecule-bearing phosphate groups. Consequently, a large amount of cocaine aptamer strands can be immobilized onto the substrate modified by 2D AuNCs@521-MOF nanosheet, further leading to the formation of a constructed biosensitive platform, which can be used to successfully detect cocaine through the specific binding interactions between cocaine and aptamer strands. The results demonstrated that the 2D AuNCs@521-MOF-based aptasensor had high sensitivity for detecting cocaine within the broad concentration range of 0.001-1.0 ng·mL^-1 and the low limit of detection of 1.29 pM (0.44 pg·mL^-1) and 2.22 pM (0.75 pg·mL^-1) as determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and differential pulse voltammetry, respectively. As expected, with the advantages of high selectivity, repeatability, stability, and simple operation, this new strategy is believed to exhibit great potential for simple and convenient detection of cocaine.

Reusable amperometric biosensor for measuring protein tyrosine kinase activity

This work presents a simple, low-cost and reusable label-free method for detecting protein tyrosine kinase activity using a tyrosinase-based amperometric biosensor (tyrosine kinase biosensor). This method is based on the observation that phosphorylation can block the tyrosinase-catalyzed oxidation of tyrosine or tyrosyl residue in peptides. Therefore, the activity of p60c-src protein tyrosine kinase (Src) on the developed tyrosine kinase biosensor could be quickly determined when its specific peptide substrate, p60c-src substrate I, was used. The tyrosine kinase biosensor was highly sensitive to the activity of Src with a linear dynamic range of 1.9-237.6 U/mL and the lowest detection limit of 0.23 U/mL. Interestingly, the tyrosine kinase activity can be measured using the developed tyrosine kinase biosensor repetitively without regeneration. The inhibitory effect of various kinase inhibitors on the Src activity could be determined on the tyrosine kinase biosensor. Src-specific inhibitors, PP2 and Src inhibitor I, effectively suppressed Src activity, whereas PD153035, an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor, was ineffective. Staurosporine, a universal kinase inhibitor, inhibited Src activity in an ATP concentration-dependent manner. These results suggests that the activities of tyrosine kinases and their behaviors toward various reagents can be effectively measured using the developed tyrosine kinase biosensor.
