In situ detection of microbial c-type cytochrome based on intrinsic peroxidase-like activity using screen-printed carbon electrode

Ball-milled magnetic sludge biochar enables fast aerobic granulation in anoxic/oxic process for the treatment of coal chemical wastewater

Coal chemical wastewater (CCW) containing toxic and hazardous matters requires to be treated prior to discharge. Promoting the in-situ formation of magnetic aerobic granular sludge (mAGS) in continuous flow reactor process has a great potential for CCW remediation. However, long granulation time and low stability limit the application of AGS technology. In this study, Fe₃O₄/sludge biochar (Fe₃O₄/SC) with biochar matrix derived from coal chemical sludge were applied to facilitate the aerobic granulation in two-stage continuous flow reactors, containing separated anoxic and oxic reaction units (abbreviated as A/O process). The performance of A/O process was evaluated at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (42 h, 27 h, and 15 h). Magnetic Fe₃O₄/SC with porous structures, high specific surface area (BET = 96.69 m²/g), and abundant functional groups was successfully prepared by ball-milled method. Adding magnetic Fe₃O₄/SC to A/O process could promote aerobic granulation (85 days) and the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N)_, and total nitrogen (TN) from CCW at all tested HRTs. Since the formed mAGS had high biomass, good settling ability, and high electrochemical activities, mAGS-based A/O process had high tolerance to the decrease of HRT from 42 h to 15 h for CCW treatment. The optimized HRT for A/O process was 27 h, at which Fe₃O₄/SC addition can result in the increase of COD, NH₄⁺-N and TN removal efficiencies by 2.5 %, 4.7 % and 10.5 %, respectively. Based on 16S rRNA genes sequencing, the relative abundances of genus Nitrosomonas, Hyphomicrobium/Hydrogenophaga and Gaiella in mAGS accounting for nitrification, denitrification as well as COD removal were increased during aerobic granulation. Overall, this study proved that adding Fe₃O₄/SC to A/O process was effective for facilitating aerobic granulation and CCW treatment.

Smartphone-based surface plasmon resonance sensing platform for rapid detection of bacteria

Bacterial infection poses severe threats to public health, and early rapid detection of the pathogen is critical for controlling bacterial infectious diseases. Current methods are commonly labor intensive, time consuming or dependent on lab-based equipment. In this study, we proposed a novel and practical method for bacterial detection based on smartphones using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomena of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The proposed smartphone-based SPR sensing method is achieved by utilizing color development that arises from the change in interparticle distance of AuNPs induced by bacterial lysate. The pictures of bacteria/AuNPs color development were captured, and their color signals were acquired through a commercial smartphone. The proposed method has a detection range between 2.44 × 10⁵ and 1.25 × 10⁸ cfu mL⁻¹ and a detection limit of 8.81 × 10⁴ cfu mL⁻¹. Furthermore, this method has acceptable recoveries (between 85.7% and 95.4%) when measuring spiked real waters. Combining smartphone-based signal reading with AuNP-dependent color development also offers the following advantages: easy-to-use, real-time detection, free of complex equipment and low cost. In view of these features, this sensing platform would have widespread applications in the fields of medical, food, and environmental sciences.

Biosurfactant mediated bioelectrokinetic remediation of diesel contaminated environment

The present study integrated the electrokinetic (EK) with bioremediation (Bioelectrokinetic -BEK) of diesel hydrocarbon by Staphylococcus epidermidis EVR4. It was identified as efficient biosurfactant producing bacteria and growth parameters was optimized using response surface methodology. Upon degradation, there is a complete disappearance of peaks from nonane (C₉) to tricosane (C₂₃) and 85%, 47% of degradation of pentacosane and octacosane respectively. Marine bacterial strain, EVR4 was found to be potential to degrade the diesel with a maximum degradation efficiency of 96% within 4 d, which was due to its synergistic role of biosurfactant and catabolic enzymes (dehydrogenase, catalase and cytochrome C). The application of integrated BEK was an effective insitu method for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil by BEK (84%) than EK (67%). EVR4 as an effective strain can be employed for BIO-EK method to clean the diesel hydrocarbon polluted environment.

Electrochemical (Bio)Sensors for Pesticides Detection Using Screen-Printed Electrodes

Pesticides are among the most important contaminants in food, leading to important global health problems. While conventional techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) have traditionally been utilized for the detection of such food contaminants, they are relatively expensive, time-consuming and labor intensive, limiting their use for point-of-care (POC) applications. Electrochemical (bio)sensors are emerging devices meeting such expectations, since they represent reliable, simple, cheap, portable, selective and easy to use analytical tools that can be used outside the laboratories by non-specialized personnel. Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) stand out from the variety of transducers used in electrochemical (bio)sensing because of their small size, high integration, low cost and ability to measure in few microliters of sample. In this context, in this review article, we summarize and discuss about the use of SPEs as analytical tools in the development of (bio)sensors for pesticides of interest for food control. Finally, aspects related to the analytical performance of the developed (bio)sensors together with prospects for future improvements are discussed.
