Self-healable and anti-freezing ion conducting hydrogel-based artificial bioelectronic tongue sensing toward astringent and bitter tastes

Probing the ionic activation enthalpies in anionic polysaccharide xerogel-based single ion conductor for temperature sensing

Ionic charge transport in polymer-based solid electrolytes is significantly affected by thermal perturbations, facilitating the detection of temperature variations. However, the impact of ionic interactions and molecular arrangements in polymeric single-ion conductors (SICs) has not been thoroughly investigated for temperature sensing. By probing the effect of the associated energies for ionic interactions and polymeric rearrangements, the thermal sensing characteristics of alginate have been studied. For the first time, alginate SIC interacting with multivalent ions (viz., Na+, Ca2+ and Fe3+) to form xerogel has been exploited as a temperature-sensing layer by fabricating a xerogel-based ionic thermistor (xIT) as a temperature sensor. The xIT has demonstrated stable functioning from 25 to 70 °C and unveiled enhanced sensing abilities in the physiological state of the human body (35-40 °C), exhibiting a monotonic linear response, high sensitivity (-3.77 % °C-1), and high accuracy (0.1 °C). The sensing characteristic is observed due to the inward ionic flux under thermal and electrical perturbations. The concentration of ionic charge carriers and ionic drift are assumed to be Arrhenius-activated processes. A general microscopic model of ion transport within polysaccharides has been elucidated via hopping mechanisms, and the effects of the associated activation energies on temperature sensitivity have been explained.

MXene/Hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose for the direct evaluation of food spoilage in both liquid and gas-phase environments

Various bioelectronic noses have been recently developed for mimicking human olfactory systems. However, achieving direct monitoring of gas-phase molecules remains a challenge for the development of bioelectronic noses due to the instability of receptor and the limitations of its surrounding microenvironment. Here, we report a MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose for the sensitive detection of liquid and gaseous hexanal, a signature odorant from spoiled food. In this study, a conducting MXene/hydrogel structure was formed on a sensor via physical adsorption. Then, canine olfactory receptor 5269-embedded nanodiscs (cfOR5269NDs) which could selectively recognize hexanal molecules were embedded in the three-dimensional (3D) MXene/hydrogel structures using glutaraldehyde as a linker. Our MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose exhibited a high selectivity and sensitivity for monitoring hexanal in both liquid and gas phases. The bioelectronic noses could sensitively detect liquid and gaseous hexanal down to 10-18 M and 6.9 ppm, and they had wide detection ranges of 10-18 - 10-6 M and 6.9-32.9 ppm, respectively. Moreover, our bioelectronic nose allowed us to monitor hexanal levels in fish and milk. In this respect, our MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose could be a practical strategy for versatile applications such as food spoilage assessments in both liquid and gaseous systems.

Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensors Composed of Polyaniline Nanofibers with High Electrochemical Performance

The measurement of glucose concentration is a fundamental daily care for diabetes patients, and therefore, its detection with accuracy is of prime importance in the field of health care. In this study, the fabrication of an electrochemical sensor for glucose sensing was successfully designed. The electrode material was fabricated using polyaniline and systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. The polyaniline nanofiber-modified electrode showed excellent detection ability for glucose with a linear range of 10 μM to 1 mM and a detection limit of 10.6 μM. The stability of the same electrode was tested for 7 days. The electrode shows high sensitivity for glucose detection in the presence of interferences. The polyaniline-modified electrode does not affect the presence of interferences and has a low detection limit. It is also cost-effective and does not require complex sample preparation steps. This makes it a potential tool for glucose detection in pharmacy and medical diagnostics.

Hydrothermally Synthesized Z-Scheme Nanocomposite of ZIF-9 Modified MXene for Photocatalytic Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol

4-Chlorophenol (4CP) is a well-known environmental contaminant often detected in wastewater, generally arising from industrial processes such as chemical manufacture, pharmaceutical production, and pesticide formulation. 4CP is a matter of great concern since it is persistent and has the potential to have harmful impacts on both aquatic ecosystems and human health, owing to its hazardous and mutagenic properties. Hence, degradation of 4CP is of utmost significance. This research investigates the photocatalytic degradation of 4CP using a novel Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposite composed of MXene and ZIF-9. The nanocomposite is synthesized through a two-step hydrothermal method and thoroughly characterized by using XRD, SEM, UV-visible spectroscopy, zeta potential, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies, confirming successful fabrication with improved surface properties. The comparative photocatalytic degradation studies between pristine materials and the nanocomposite were performed, and significant enhancement in performance was observed. The effect of pH on the degradation efficiency is also explored and correlated with the surface charge. The Z-scheme photocatalysis mechanism is proposed, which is supported by time-resolved photoluminescence studies and scavenger experiments. The reusability of the nanocomposite is also evaluated. The study contributes to the development of efficient and sustainable photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Electronic Tongue Based on ZnO/ITO@glass for Electrochemical Monitoring of Spiciness Levels

Capsaicin, a chemical compound present in chili peppers, is widely acknowledged as the main contributor to the spicy and hot sensations encountered during consumption. Elevated levels of capsaicin can result in meals being excessively spicy, potentially leading to health issues, such as skin burning, irritation, increased heart rate and circulation, and discomfort in the gastrointestinal system and even inducing nausea or diarrhea. The level of spiciness that individuals can tolerate may vary, so what may be considered incredibly hot for one person could be mild for another. To ensure food safety, human healthcare, regulatory compliance, and quality control in spicy food products, capsaicin levels must be measured. For these purposes, a reliable and stable sensor is required to quantify the capsaicin level. To leverage the effect of zinc oxide (ZnO), herein, we demonstrated the one-step fabrication process of an electronic tongue (E-Tongue) based on an electrochemical biosensor for the determination of capsaicin. ZnO was electrodeposited on the indium tin oxide (ITO) surface. The biosensor demonstrated the two notable linear ranges from 0.01 to 50 μM and from 50 to 500 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.1 nM. The present study also included the analysis of real samples, such as green chilis, red chili powder, and dried red chilis, to evaluate their spiciness levels. Furthermore, the E-Tongue exhibited notable degrees of sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability for a duration of more than a month. The development of an E-Tongue for capsaicin real-time monitoring as a point-of-care (POC) device has the potential to impact various industries and improve safety, product quality, and healthcare outcomes.

PdSe2/MoSe2: a promising van der Waals heterostructure for field effect transistor application

The field-effect transistor (FET) is a fundamental component of semiconductors and the electronic industry. High on-current and mobility with layer-dependent features are required for outstanding FET channel material. Two-dimensional materials are advantageous over bulk materials owing to their higher mobility, high ON/OFF ratio, low tunneling current, and leakage problems. Moreover, two-dimensional heterostructures provide a better way to tune electrical properties. In this work, the two distinct possibilities of PdSe2/MoSe2heterostructure have been employed through mechanical exfoliation and analyzed their electrical response. These diffe approaches to heterostructure formation serve as crucial components of our investigation, allowing us to explore and evaluate the unique electronic properties arising from each design. This work demonstrates that the heterostructure possesses a better ON/OFF ratio of ∼5.78 × 105, essential in switching characteristics. Moreover, MoSe2provides a defect-free interface to PdSe2, resulting in a higher ON current of ∼10μA and mobility of ∼63.7 cm2V-1s-1, necessary for transistor applications. In addition, comprehending the process of charge transfer occurring at the interface between transition metal dichalcogenides is fundamental for advancing next-generation technologies. This work provides insights into the interface formed between the PdSe2and MoSe2that can be harnessed in transistor applications.

Gustation-Inspired Dual-Responsive Hydrogels for Taste Sensing Enabled by Machine Learning

Human gustatory system recognizes salty/sour or sweet tastants based on their different ionic or nonionic natures using two different signaling pathways. This suggests that evolution has selected this detection dualism favorably. Analogically, this work constructs herein bioinspired stimulus-responsive hydrogels to recognize model salty/sour or sweet tastes based on two different responses, that is, electrical and volumetric responsivities. Different compositions of zwitter-ionic sulfobetainic N-(3-sulfopropyl)-N-(methacryloxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylammonium betaine (DMAPS) and nonionic 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) are co-polymerized to explore conditions for gelation. The hydrogel responses upon adding model tastant molecules are explored using electrical and visual de-swelling observations. Beyond challenging electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, naive multimeter electrical characterizations are performed, toward facile applicability. Ionic model molecules, for example, sodium chloride and acetic acid, interact electrostatically with DMAPS groups, whereas nonionic molecules, for example, D(-)fructose, interact by hydrogen bonding with HEMA. The model tastants induce complex combinations of electrical and volumetric responses, which are then introduced as inputs for machine learning algorithms. The fidelity of such a trained dual response approach is tested for a more general taste identification. This work envisages that the facile dual electric/volumetric hydrogel responses combined with machine learning proposes a generic bioinspired avenue for future bionic designs of artificial taste recognition, amply needed in applications.

Biomimetic Wearable Sensors: Emerging Combination of Intelligence and Electronics

Owing to the advancement of interdisciplinary concepts, for example, wearable electronics, bioelectronics, and intelligent sensing, during the microelectronics industrial revolution, nowadays, extensively mature wearable sensing devices have become new favorites in the noninvasive human healthcare industry. The combination of wearable sensing devices with bionics is driving frontier developments in various fields, such as personalized medical monitoring and flexible electronics, due to the superior biocompatibilities and diverse sensing mechanisms. It is noticed that the integration of desired functions into wearable device materials can be realized by grafting biomimetic intelligence. Therefore, herein, the mechanism by which biomimetic materials satisfy and further enhance system functionality is reviewed. Next, wearable artificial sensory systems that integrate biomimetic sensing into portable sensing devices are introduced, which have received significant attention from the industry owing to their novel sensing approaches and portabilities. To address the limitations encountered by important signal and data units in biomimetic wearable sensing systems, two paths forward are identified and current challenges and opportunities are presented in this field. In summary, this review provides a further comprehensive understanding of the development of biomimetic wearable sensing devices from both breadth and depth perspectives, offering valuable guidance for future research and application expansion of these devices.

Taste Bud-Inspired Single-Drop Multitaste Sensing for Comprehensive Flavor Analysis with Deep Learning Algorithms

The electronic tongue (E-tongue) system has emerged as a significant innovation, aiming to replicate the complexity of human taste perception. In spite of the advancements in E-tongue technologies, two primary challenges remain to be addressed. First, evaluating the actual taste is complex due to interactions between taste and substances, such as synergistic and suppressive effects. Second, ensuring reliable outcomes in dynamic conditions, particularly when faced with high deviation error data, presents a significant challenge. The present study introduces a bioinspired artificial E-tongue system that mimics the gustatory system by integrating multiple arrays of taste sensors to emulate taste buds in the human tongue and incorporating a customized deep-learning algorithm for taste interpretation. The developed E-tongue system is capable of detecting four distinct tastes in a single drop of dietary compounds, such as saltiness, sourness, astringency, and sweetness, demonstrating notable reversibility and selectivity. The taste profiles of six different wines are obtained by the E-tongue system and demonstrated similarities in taste trends between the E-tongue system and user reviews from online, although some disparities still exist. To mitigate these disparities, a prototype-based classifier with soft voting is devised and implemented for the artificial E-tongue system. The artificial E-tongue system achieved a high classification accuracy of ∼95% in distinguishing among six different wines and ∼90% accuracy even in an environment where more than 1/3 of the data contained errors. Moreover, by harnessing the capabilities of deep learning technology, a recommendation system was demonstrated to enhance the user experience.

Nanostructured material-based optical and electrochemical detection of amoxicillin antibiotic

The penicillin derivative amoxicillin (AMX) plays an important role in treating various types of infections caused by bacteria. However, excessive use of AMX may have negative health effects. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to detect and quantify the AMX in pharmaceutical drugs, biological fluids, and environmental samples with high sensitivity. Therefore, this review article provides valuable and up-to-date information on nanostructured material-based optical and electrochemical sensors to detect AMX in various biological and chemical samples. The role of using different nanostructured materials on the performance of important optical sensors such as colorimetric sensors, fluorescence sensors, surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensors, chemiluminescence/electroluminescence sensors, optical immunosensors, optical fibre-based sensors, and several important electrochemical sensors based on different electrode types have been discussed. Moreover, nanocomposites, polymer, and MXenes-based electrochemical sensors have also been discussed, in which such materials are being used to further enhance the sensitivity of these sensors. Furthermore, nanocomposite-based photo-electrochemical sensors and the market availability of biosensors including AMX have also been discussed briefly. Finally, the conclusion, challenges, and future perspectives of the above-mentioned sensing techniques for AMX detection are presented.

Polyurethane Application to Transform Screen-Printed Electrode for Rapid Identification of Histamine Isolated from Fish

The toxicity of histamine has attracted numerous researchers to develop a method for histamine determination purposes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unequivocally prohibits the consumption of histamine above 50 mg·kg^-1. Thus, an innovation in histamine detection in fish has been developed in this research. The investigation of the histamine level in fish has been conducted by using an electrochemical sensor approach and producing a polymer via molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) on a screen-printed electrode. The technique was validated by assessing the shifts in electron shifting using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) approach and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), whereas differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was applied to validate the sensor method. The instruments showed a linear response ranging from 1-1000 nmol·L^-1, with a detection limit of MIP/SPE at 1.765 nmol·L^-1 and 709 nmol·L^-1 for the NIP/SPE, respectively. The sensing technique was employed to determine the histamine level in selected samples at room temperature (25°C). The outcomes of this study indicated that the validated chemical sensor allowed accurate and precise detection of fish samples and can be categorized as a simple approach. The instrument is inexpensive and suitable for on-site detection.

Recent advances in conductive hydrogels: classifications, properties, and applications

Hydrogel-based conductive materials for smart wearable devices have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent flexibility, versatility, and outstanding biocompatibility. This review presents the recent advances in multifunctional conductive hydrogels for electronic devices. First, conductive hydrogels with different components are discussed, including pure single network hydrogels based on conductive polymers, single network hydrogels with additional conductive additives (i.e., nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanosheets), double network hydrogels based on conductive polymers, and double network hydrogels with additional conductive additives. Second, conductive hydrogels with a variety of functionalities, including self-healing, super toughness, self-growing, adhesive, anti-swelling, antibacterial, structural color, hydrophobic, anti-freezing, shape memory and external stimulus responsiveness are introduced in detail. Third, the applications of hydrogels in flexible devices are illustrated (i.e., strain sensors, supercapacitors, touch panels, triboelectric nanogenerator, bioelectronic devices, and robot). Next, the current challenges facing hydrogels are summarized. Finally, an imaginative but reasonable outlook is given, which aims to drive further development in the future.

Chitosan-Based Hydrogels for Bioelectronic Sensing: Recent Advances and Applications in Biomedicine and Food Safety

Due to the lack of efficient bioelectronic interfaces, the communication between biology and electronics has become a great challenge, especially in constructing bioelectronic sensing. As natural polysaccharide biomaterials, chitosan-based hydrogels exhibit the advantages of flexibility, biocompatibility, mechanical tunability, and stimuli sensitivity, and could serve as an excellent interface for bioelectronic sensors. Based on the fabrication approaches, interaction mechanisms, and bioelectronic communication modalities, this review divided chitosan-based hydrogels into four types, including electrode-based hydrogels, conductive materials conjugated hydrogels, ionically conductive hydrogels, and redox-based hydrogels. To introduce the enhanced performance of bioelectronic sensors, as a complementary alternative, the incorporation of nanoparticles and redox species in chitosan-based hydrogels was discussed. In addition, the multifunctional properties of chitosan-based composite hydrogels enable their applications in biomedicine (e.g., smart skin patches, wood healing, disease diagnosis) and food safety (e.g., electrochemical sensing, smart sensing, artificial bioelectronic tongue, fluorescence sensors, surface-enhanced Raman scattering). We believe that this review will shed light on the future development of chitosan-based biosensing hydrogels for micro-implantable devices and human-machine interactions, as well as potential applications in medicine, food, agriculture, and other fields.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticle-Based Ferro-Nanofluids for Advanced Technological Applications

Iron oxide nanoparticle (ION)-based ferro-nanofluids (FNs) have been used for different technological applications owing to their excellent magneto-rheological properties. A comprehensive overview of the current advancement of FNs based on IONs for various engineering applications is unquestionably necessary. Hence, in this review article, various important advanced technological applications of ION-based FNs concerning different engineering fields are critically summarized. The chemical engineering applications are mainly focused on mass transfer processes. Similarly, the electrical and electronics engineering applications are mainly focused on magnetic field sensors, FN-based temperature sensors and tilt sensors, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and on-chip components, actuators, and cooling for electronic devices and photovoltaic thermal systems. On the other hand, environmental engineering applications encompass water and air purification. Moreover, mechanical engineering or magneto-rheological applications include dampers and sealings. This review article provides up-to-date information related to the technological advancements and emerging trends in ION-based FN research concerning various engineering fields, as well as discusses the challenges and future perspectives.
