A Bibliometric Analysis of the 50 Most Cited Articles on Body Contouring Surgery After Massive Weight Loss

BACKGROUND

Body contouring surgery after massive weight loss has emerged a safe and reliable option to improve self-esteem, social life, work ability, physical activity, and sexual activity, and it is considered as an essential step in the multidisciplinary approach to morbid obesity. In this study, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of literature on body contouring after massive weight loss, identifying research trends and areas for future investigation.

METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection was used to identify the 50 most cited publications on post-massive weight loss surgery. Data collected from each article included: title, journal, publication year, total citations, average citations per year, authors, study type, study topic, country, and institution of origin.

RESULTS

The top 50 most-cited articles include 44 original articles and 6 review articles. The most cited article, published by Lockwood in 1991, received a total of 224 citations. The research areas included surgical outcomes and complications (n=19, 38%), psychological aspects such as body image, quality of life and desire for body contouring procedures (n=18, 36%), surgical techniques (n=11, 22%), an anatomical study (n=1, 2%), and a classification system (n=1; 2%). Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal published most (44%) of the papers identified. The University of Pittsburgh was the single institution that contributed the most (n=11; 22%).

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provides insights and research trends for clinicians interested in body contouring after massive weight loss, facilitating the understanding and evolution of post-bariatric surgery and elucidating the rationale behind current practice.

Top 50 Highly Cited Publications in Facelift Surgery: A 50-Year Bibliometric Analysis Review

INTRODUCTION

Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is a commonly performed procedure to address aging-related changes in the face and neck. Over the years, its techniques and methodologies have evolved. This study aimed to provide a bibliometric analysis of the top 50 most cited publications related to facelift surgery over a fifty-year period (1973-2023).

METHODS

The authors obtained data from the Web of Science Core Collection on July 15, 2023. Using a predefined search strategy, the most cited articles from 1973 to 2023 on facelift surgery were identified. The publications were analyzed for their type of study, journal of publication, geographic origin, and primary outcomes. Furthermore, the authorship gender distribution was assessed.

RESULTS

The majority of the publications (34 out of 50) were published in the "Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery" journal. The USA contributed to 72% of the research, followed by the UK, Mexico, Australia, and Germany. The primary outcomes varied from surgical techniques, anatomical studies, risk factors, patient-specific outcomes, and facial rejuvenation techniques, to comparative and historical progression of techniques. Notably, male authors dominated the field with 47 out of 50 papers having both a first and senior male author.

CONCLUSION

Facelift surgery has seen substantial research development over the past fifty years. The USA has been at the forefront of this research, with a predominant focus on surgical techniques and anatomical studies. Male dominance in authorship indicates potential scope for increased gender diversity in this specialty. Annual updates are recommended for continued insights.

Human Capital and Productivity in Plastic Surgery Research Across Nations

BACKGROUND

Understanding country differences in production and human capital in plastic surgery research is crucial in identifying current and future leaders in the field. In this study, we document each country's human capital and productivity in plastic surgery research.

METHODS

A web scraping algorithm was deployed on PubMed to retrieve information on every publication and every first author in 10 major research outlets in plastic surgery between 2015 and 2021. Each country's human capital in the field is proxied by the number of first authors affiliated with that country. We compare aggregate patterns and volume trajectories of publications affiliated with 110 countries in the context of their human capital.

RESULTS

We find that over the studied period, two countries, the USA and China, are represented in roughly 50% and 45% of global research output and first authors, respectively, in plastic surgery. Specifically in the USA, California has the highest number of affiliated first authors and publications compared with other States.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings reveal the clear dominance of the USA in plastic surgery research production. No specific US State stands out in the nation as much as the USA does in the global ranking of plastic surgery publications. This suggests that US plastic surgeons across the nation aim to publish. Our global analysis also suggests that countries with a higher share of first authors relative to their research output may have greater capacity to expand their research output in the future.

The 50 most cited articles and science mapping analysis of vaginal tightening

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS

The study was aimed at exploring the 50 most cited articles related to vaginal tightening.

METHODS

The papers were searched through the Thomson Reuters Web of Science on 30 July 2022, and were ranked by the total number of citations. The included articles were analyzed for author, journal, country, number of citations, keywords, subject matter, and level of evidence. The search output was also imported into VOSviewer.

RESULTS

The 50 most cited articles were cited a combined total of 2,558 times. The papers were published between 1990 and 2020, of which 86% were published between 2010 and 2020. They included 38 original articles, 8 reviews, 3 editorial articles, and 1 letter. Most articles were published in gynecology-related journals (n=30, 60%). The articles covered a wide range of topics, the most common being laser/radiofrequency treatment, vaginal tightening procedures, and urinary incontinence. The majority presented findings supported by level IV or V evidence. Through co-occurrence analysis, high-frequency words and countries were displayed well.

CONCLUSIONS

The study shed light on frequently read articles and influential topics about vaginal tightening. The highly cited literature mainly focused on laser or radiofrequency treatments and gynecologists currently dominate the highly cited literature on vaginal tightening. The articles related to surgical treatments are low in number and evidence level so far. The co-occurrence analysis reveals the hot research content and active countries in the field. In general, the study provides useful evidence for future research and educational materials.

Trend of Academic Productivity in Plastic Surgery and the Impact of COVID-19: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Plastic surgery has grown rapidly over the past decade, with increasing scientific output. The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a considerable impact on plastic surgery.

OBJECTIVE

To identify trends in published literature in plastic surgery from 2011 to 2021. To explore the impact of COVID-19 on scientific research output through bibliometric analysis methods.

METHODS

Web of Science was searched by authors on December 23, 2021. Published papers about plastic surgery over the last decade were analyzed. The search output was imported into VOSviewer for science mapping.

RESULTS

The actual number of papers related to plastic surgery during the COVID-19 period was higher than expected one. For scientific outputs in plastic surgery, keywords about surgical practice had a high frequency. "Reconstruction," "effect," "flap," "tissue," "defect," "model" maintained a high level of heat before and after COVID-19. The heat of "risk," "complication," "review," "infection," "cohort," and "meta-analysis" increased after the outbreak of COVID-19. The international collaboration showed an upward trend despite the impact of COVID-19. From the perspective of the volume of plastic surgery publications, some journals had a more positive performance compared to the pre-epidemic period. The proportion of original articles decreased after the spread of COVID-19 from 70.26% to 63.84%.

CONCLUSION

Although the COVID-19 has a profound impact on the healthcare industry, the bibliographic data reveals an increasing scientific output in the field of plastic surgery over time. For plastic surgery, high-frequency terms, research hotspots, popular journals, article types, and international collaboration have changed under the influence of COVID-19.

Update on Rhinoplasty Research Trends: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgical procedures. The current study aimed to use bibliometric analysis to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate rhinoplasty research and determine the research trends and hotspots in this field.

METHODS

Publications on rhinoplasty research were extracted from the web of science core collection database. VOSviewer1.6.18 was used to analyze the co-authorship, co-occurrence, the citations of countries, institutions, authors, and hotspot keywords, and the journals in which the studies were published.

RESULTS

On April 8, 2022, 11,130 records of rhinoplasty research published between 1945 and 2021 were collected. Most of the retrieved studies were original research articles (n = 8309, 74.65%), and 1950 (17.52%) papers were available in an open-access format. The annual publication output increased annually. Research groups in the USA were the main contributors and had a strong academic reputation in this field. University of California System was the institution with the greatest contribution (4.17%, with 464 publications). Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1248 publications, 11.21%) published the most research in this field and was also the most frequently co-cited journal (33,894 citations, total link strength [TLS]: 722,672). R. J. Rohrich (140 publications) was the most prolific author and the most frequently co-cited author (2562 citations, TLS: 56,624). The following rhinoplasty research hotspots were identified: cleft rhinoplasty, nasal reconstruction, nasal tip, revision rhinoplasty, septorhinoplasty, nasal prosthesis, hyaluronic acid, and preservation rhinoplasty.

CONCLUSION

Our results provide a general overview of the major directions in rhinoplasty research. Preservation rhinoplasty, rib graft, nonsurgical rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid, FACE-Q, fillers, and three-dimensional technology may be future research hotspots.

The top 100 cited articles on spontaneous coronary artery dissection: a bibliometric analysis

Aim: This study identifies the most cited papers on spontaneous coronary artery dissection and evaluates their focus and the characteristics of the current literature. Methods: The Web of Science database was queried for publications between 1971 and 2021. The articles were ranked from the most to the least citations, and each was reviewed by two authors. Results: The total citations ranged from 44 to 457, with a median (interquartile range) citation of 78.5 (60-140). Females were 28% of the first authors, about half the papers (52/100) were published in the last decade, most were observational studies (78/100) and the rest were nonoriginal studies. The impact factor of the journal weakly correlated with the number of citations (r [98] = 0.24; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Efforts are needed to encourage female authorship and increase the quality of articles in this subject area.

Global Research Trends and Perspectives of Blepharoplasty: A 20-Year Bibliometric Analysis Based on Web of Science

BACKGROUND

The number of publications on blepharoplasty is increasing rapidly. Bibliometric analysis can help surgeons quickly and systematically understand the current state of development. To our knowledge, there are no bibliometric studies on blepharoplasty, and therefore, we conducted this study to reveal research trends and perspectives of blepharoplasty.

METHODS

Relevant publications from 2002 to 2021 were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection database. After manual screening, VOSviewer software and CiteSpace software were used to collect and analyze the acquired data.

RESULTS

A total of 1125 publications were included and the publications per year increased annually. Contributions from the USA led both quantity and quality. The University of California System was one of the most influential academic institutions. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery had the most publications, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was the most frequently cited or co-cited journal. Massry GG and Hamra ST were the most prolific and co-cited authors, respectively. Additionally, Rohrich RJ had the highest number of citations per publication. References co-cited analysis identified that lower eyelid research was a hotspot. Keywords were mainly divided into 6 clusters, namely "lower lid blepharoplasty," "complications," "facial rejuvenation," "blepharoptosis," "upper blepharoplasty," and "Asian blepharoplasty and epicanthoplasty."

CONCLUSIONS

Blepharoplasty research is flourishing, and three clusters may be the hotspots: "Lower blepharoplasty and mid-face rejuvenation," "overall facial outcome and quality-of-life," and "Asian blepharoplasty and epicanthoplasty."

A Worldwide Bibliometric Analysis of Published Literature on Osteoporosis Vertebral Compression Fracture

Background

With the aging population growth in the world, the prevalence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) is rapidly increasing and receiving widespread attention. Although there are numerous articles on the topic, the research status and hotspot analysis are unclear.

Objective

The goal of this study is to identify trends in the OVCF field and to analyze the most highly cited original articles published in the Web of Science Index on OVCF using bibliometric analysis.

Methods

All OVCF data were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection, and the number of citations, institutions, journals, countries, and years of publication in this field were visually analyzed using VOSviewer, the bibliometrics online analysis platform, and Excel software. Simultaneously, the top 100 most cited articles were extracted and analyzed.

Results

A total of 756 publications were related to OVCF were included from 1900 to 2022. In recent years, the number of articles on OVCF significantly increased. They are mainly from 41 countries/regions and 202 journals, led by China and the United States. Among all countries, China had the most significant contribution on OVCF (n = 363), and it also was cited most often (n = 3337). The institution with the most articles was Soochow University (n = 40). Osteoporosis International was the journal with most studies and has published 50 on this field. The journal of Spine was cited most often (n = 1968). The most productive periods were from 2016 to 2020, which received 294 articles and 4868 citations. After the analysis, the “vertebroplasty” and “kyphoplasty” of OVCF have been the most common research hotspots.

Conclusion

This study represents an updated bibliometric analysis of OVCF. The aim is to identify current research hotspots and future trends to guide clinicians and researchers in this field.

A plastic and reconstructive surgery landscape assessment of Malawi: a scoping review of Malawian literature

Background

Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) remains highly relevant to the unmet need for surgery in Malawi. Better understanding the current PRS landscape and its barriers may help address some of these challenges. This scoping review aimed to describe: (1) the scope and focus of the PRS literature being produced in Malawi and (2) the challenges, deficits, and barriers to providing accessible, high-quality PRS in Malawi.

Methods

This scoping review was conducted on four databases (SCOPUS, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE) from inception through September 1, 2020 following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines.

Results

The database search retrieved 3852 articles, of which 31 were included that examined the burden of PRS-related conditions in Malawi. Of these 31 articles, 25 primarily discussed burn-related care. Burns injuries have a high mortality rate; between 27 and 75% in the studies. The literature revealed that there are only two burn units nationally with one PRS specialist in each unit, compounded by a lack of interest in PRS specialization by Malawian medical students. Congenital anomalies were the only other PRS-related condition examined and reported in the literature, accounting for 23% of all pediatric surgeries in tertiary facilities.

Conclusions

There is a need to increase the country's capacity to handle burn reconstruction and other PRS-related conditions to reduce overall morbidity and mortality. Additional publicly funded research at the district and community level is warranted to determine the true burden of PRS disease in Malawi to derive health system strengthening and workforce capacity building strategies.

A 20-Year Analysis of Global Authorship Trends in Craniofacial Literature: Is the United States Falling Behind?

INTRODUCTION

Recent advances in craniofacial surgery have occurred in conjunction with a global proliferation of research. Although previous studies have examined geographic publication trends, little is known about these trends in the craniofacial literature.

METHODS

All craniofacial articles published from 2000 to 2020 in 3 premier craniofacial surgery journals were evaluated in 5-year increments. Geographic origin, manuscript type, and authorship characteristics were collected. Changes in publication output, geographic origin, and content were analyzed.

RESULTS

In total 3864 articles were analyzed, with the United States (U.S.) (33.46%) accounting for the majority, followed by Asia (27.04%), the Middle East (16.23%), and Europe (14.65%). The proportion of articles from the U.S. decreased significantly in the in the 20-year span (48.28% versus 33.53%, P < 0.001), whereas those originating from Asia and the Middle East increased significantly (18.62% versus 31.41% and 10.34% versus 15.66%, respectively, P < 0.001). After stratifying and selecting for regions with the greatest changes in publication output, the authors observed significant trends for the number of original investigations from 2000 to 2020 in the U.S. (Odds Ratio [OR] 1 versus 2.4, P < 0.001) and in Asia (OR 1 versus 1.8, P = 0.0052). Additionally, a significant trend in editorial/correspondence publications originating in the U.S. (OR 1 versus 0.74, P = 0.0102), Europe (OR 1 versus 0.38, P = 0.0186), and Asia (OR 1 versus 0.48, P = 0.0051) was observed.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite rising craniofacial publications over the past 2 decades, there has been a diminishing proportion originating from the U.S.

Trends in Breast Augmentation Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Breast augmentation is one of the most demanded procedures in plastic surgery and one of the most commonly performed by plastic surgeons. However, a bibliometric analysis of breast augmentation has not been published in recent years. The current study aimed to use a bibliometric analysis to conduct a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of breast augmentation research and provide the research trends and hotspots in this field.

METHODS

Publications on breast augmentation research were extracted from the Web of Science core collection database. VOSviewer 1.6.18 was used to assess co-authorship, co-occurrence, citation of countries, institutions, authors, and journals, as well as hotspot keywords.

RESULTS

On February 8, 2022, 4637 records of breast augmentation research published from 1985 to 2021 were collected. The bulk of the retrieved studies were original research articles (n = 2235, 48.20%). A total of 1053 (22.71%) papers were open access. The annual publication output increased annually. The USA was the driving force in this field and had a strong academic reputation. The top-contributing institution was the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (2.37%, with 110 publications). Plastic and reconstructive surgery (998 publications, 21.52%) published the most research in this field and was also the most frequently co-cited journal (22,351 citations, total link strength (TLS): 409,301). Clemens MW (68 publications, 1.47%) was the most prolific author, and Spear SL (1456 citations, TLS: 27,231) was the most frequently co-cited author. The research hotspots included the following four aspects: safety and effectiveness of breast implants, implant-based breast reconstruction, breast cancer incidence after breast implantation, and breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). The research trends were BIA-ALCL, implant-based breast reconstruction, BREAST-Q, acellular dermal matrix, capsular contracture, and autologous fat grafting.

CONCLUSION

The present study provides a panoramic view of breast augmentation research in plastic and reconstructive surgery. This novel comprehensive bibliometric analysis can help researchers and nonresearchers alike to rapidly identify the potential partners, research hotspots, and research trends within their areas of interest.

The 100 Most-Cited Articles in Liposuction: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed worldwide. Despite previous citation analyses in plastic surgery, the most-cited works in liposuction have not yet been qualitatively or quantitatively appraised. We hypothesized that use of validated outcome measures and levels of evidence would be low among these articles. Thus, we performed a bibliometric analysis aiming to comprehensively review the most-cited liposuction literature, evaluating characteristics and quality of the top 100 articles.

METHODS

The 100 most-cited articles in liposuction were identified on Web of Science, across all available journals and years (1950-2020). Study details, including the citation count, main subject, and outcome measures, were extracted from each article by 2 independent reviewers. The level of evidence of each study was also assessed.

RESULTS

The 100 most-cited articles in liposuction were cited by a total of 4809 articles. Citations per article ranged from 602 to 45 (mean, 92). Most articles were level of evidence 4 (n = 33) or 5 (n = 35), representative of the large number of case series, expert-opinion articles, and narrative reviews. Ten articles achieved level of evidence 3, 22 articles achieved level of evidence 2, and none reached level 1. The main subject was operative technique in 63 articles, followed by outcomes in 32 articles. Five articles assessed the metabolic effects of liposuction. Only 1 article used a validated objective cosmetic outcome measure, and none used validated patient-reported outcome measures.

CONCLUSIONS

This analysis provides an overview of the top cited liposuction literature. Overall, level of evidence was low, and no articles achieved the highest level of evidence. Improving the quality of literature requires prioritization of better-designed studies and incorporation of validated outcome measures, which will increase patient satisfaction and ensure provision of excellent, reproducible clinical care.

Prevalence of Workforce Diversity Research Among Surgical Specialties in the United States: How Does Plastic Surgery Compare?

BACKGROUND

Plastic surgeons are not as diverse as expected in relation to the increasingly diverse patient and medical student population. The authors assess the state of diversity in 8 primary surgical specialties in the United States and evaluate trends in research interest in diversity over the past 30 years.

METHODS

Articles regarding diversity in surgery from 1990 to 2020 were systematically reviewed. The Association of American Medical Colleges Physician Specialty Data Reports and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Data Resource Books provided resident/fellow and faculty data from 2011 to 2016. Trends were analyzed over time per specialty.

RESULTS

From 1990 to 2020, a total of 199 publications related to diversity were identified among the various surgical specialties. Orthopedic surgery had significantly more publications per year compared with other specialties (P < 0.05). Every specialty demonstrated a significant increase in publications about diversity over time (P < 0.05). A majority of publications were related to sex rather than underrepresented in medicine topics. The proportion of female surgeons was significantly higher for plastic surgery than for orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery (P < 0.001). Plastic surgery exhibited the highest growth rate in female residents (+1.6% per year, P < 0.001). The proportion of underrepresented minorities composing surgical trainees has not significantly increased in any surgical specialty between 2011 and 2016 (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Although diversity representation in surgery has somewhat improved, the rate is too slow to match the growing diversity of the US population. Outcomes have been disparate between specialties and demonstrate greater increases in sex equality relative to ethnic/racial equality. Evidence-based interventions need to be developed and implemented.

An analysis of publication trajectory in plastic surgery across the decades

The classic canonical publication trajectory for academicians has been well-described by a rapid increase followed by a slower decrease in productivity, leading to a plateau. This trajectory has not been investigated in plastic surgery. In this communication, we aimed to: (1) visualize the publication trajectory per decade for plastic surgeons certified from 1980 to 2010, and (2) characterize and quantify the changes in publishing trends across decades. A list of plastic and reconstructive surgeons board certified between 1980 and 2010 was obtained. Number of publications per year was recorded for each plastic surgeon. The median cumulative publication trajectory was graphed for each decade. Kruskal-Wallis analysis was performed to determine whether there were differences in number of publications across generations. The trajectory for a surgeon from the 1980s follows the established canonical trajectory. Surgeons from the 1990s and 2000s had significantly more publications by board certification than those from the 1980s (7 and 8 vs. 5, respectively, p < 0.01). Surgeons from the 2010s on average achieved 8 publications by board certification. It is clear that the publication arc for plastic surgeons from successive generations has greatly changed. Over the last 40 years, there has been a trend for increasing productivity and involvement in research at a much earlier stage in career, potentially due to increasing demands for matching into residency programs.

Treatment Trends of Adult Brachial Plexus Injury: A Bibliometric Analysis

Brachial plexus injury is often debilitating because it can severely impair upper extremity function and, thus, quality of life. The surgical treatment of injuries to the brachial plexus is very demanding because it requires a profound understanding of the anatomy and expertise in microsurgery. The aim of this study was to get an overview of the landscape in adult brachial plexus injury surgery, and to understand how this has changed over the years.

Methods

The most frequently cited articles in English relevant to adult brachial plexus injury were identified through the Web of Science online database.

Results

The average number of citations per article was 32.8 (median 24, range 4-158). Authors from 26 countries contributed to our list, and the US was the biggest contributor. Almost half of all nerve transfer cases were described by Asian authors. Amongst nerve transfer, the spinal accessory nerve was the preferred donor overall, except in Asia, where intercostal nerves were preferred. Distal nerve transfers were described more often than plexo-plexal and extra-plexal-to-plexal transfers. The most common grafts were sural nerve grafts and vascularized ulnar nerve grafts, which became popular in the last decade.

Conclusions

Our study sheds light on the regional variations in treatment trends of adult brachial plexus injury, and on the evolution of the field over the last 30 years. The articles included in our analysis are an excellent foundation for those interested in the surgical management of brachial plexus injuries.

Globalization of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: A Continent, Country, and State-Level Analysis of Publications

Background:

Over the past decade, there has been a worldwide increase in plastic and reconstructive surgery research as well as increased interest in global collaboration. However, little is known about who is contributing to this global expansion or the trends of individual countries. The aim of our study was to analyze the output of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) over a decade to elucidate trends in the plastic surgery field.

Methods:

The country of origin for all first authors of articles published by PRS from 2010 to 2019 were determined and date extracted using PubMed2XL. The change in frequency of publications over the decade by country, continental contributions, as well as state-level analysis within the United States were analyzed.

Results:

From 2010 to 2019, there were a total number of 8680 publications with an increase in total articles from 747 to 1049 per year. 54 countries contributed over the decade, with the United States producing the most followed by Italy, China, Canada, and the UK. The top producing states were Texas, New York, California, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.

Conclusions:

The last decade (2010–2019) saw a large international increase in research, not only with the total number of publications, but also in the diversity of originating country. Our work shows a shift away from a US-focused journal to incorporate more work from our international colleagues, as research is conducted in centers across the globe.

Global publications on stigma between 1998-2018: A bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVES

To describe the development process and structural relationships of scientific achievements on stigma over the past two decades and to provide insights for researchers and policy makers to drive policy decisions and identify future research needs.

METHODS

Quantitative analysis of publications was directly interpreted and graphed through Web of Science and ORIGIN 2017. The co-occurrence and collaboration analysis between authors, countries and keywords were conducted through VOSviewer. Keyword burst was detected through CiteSpace.

RESULTS

The retrieved 2,799 publications showed a trend of increasing annual publications between 1998 and 2018. The United States made the greatest contribution to global publications regarding stigma. Four keyword clusters indicating research hotspot were identified through the default clustering method in VOSviewer. Meta-analysis and internalized stigma were detected as keyword bursts in recent years.

CONCLUSIONS

The growth trend of publications indicated increased research interest in stigma, especially common stigma types, including HIV stigma and obesity stigma. Future research should focus on other types of stigma and should include more elaborate intervention programs, mechanism exploration, and research on internalized stigma. Scientific research on stigma requires an extensive collaborative endeavor, both domestically and internationally, among diverse researchers, institutions, and countries.

Worldwide research on fear of childbirth: A bibliometric analysis

Objective

To review the research on fear of childbirth, analyze and evaluate the publications by means of bibliometric analysis, and provide suggestions and scopes for future study.

Data sources

Web of Science, PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library databases.

Study selection

All published articles focusing on the fear of childbirth from inception to February 10, 2020.

Data extraction

A total of 743 articles were included for final analysis. Bibliographic data were exported from databases and then cleaned manually before using Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer to analyze and visualize the findings.

Data synthesis

It was found that 743 articles have been cited 31515 times (h-index: 98). The volume of publications increased by 29.3 times in the past two decades. Across the globe, Sweden was the most prolific country having 129 articles (17.4%) with six of its institutions in the top ten most prolific institutions in the world. Fifty-two (7.8%) documents were published in Midwifery journal. The most prolific author was Hildingsson, who published 35 articles (4.7%). “Cesarean section,” “experience,” and “factor” were the words that appeared most frequently in titles and abstracts of studies. “Point prevalence of psychiatric disorders during the second trimester of pregnancy: A population-based study” was the most cited article and received 525 citations.

Conclusion

There is an increasing interest in the research in fear of childbirth during the past two decades. This study has demonstrated that the Swedish authors have a leading role on this topic. Researchers especially in countries with high birth rates, need to promote research projects in this field as it is an important public health issue.

Publication trends in pediatric renal transplantation: Bibliometric analysis of literature from 1950 to 2017

INTRODUCTION

Pediatric renal transplantation has been heavily published since the 1950s. Herein, we describe the bibliometrics and impact of the 200 most-cited pediatric renal transplantation manuscripts.

METHODS

We identified pediatric renal transplantation publications from 1900 onwards. Year, citations, h-index, geographic origin, impact factor, topic, and design of the 200 top-cited papers were extracted. Impact index was calculated, adjusting for citation volume and time since publication.

RESULTS

Of the top 200 papers, mean citation count was 80 ± 40, impact factor 3.9 ± 3.7, h-index 35 ± 20, and impact index 25 ± 13. Studies were mostly retrospective (31%) or observational (32%). Most papers originated from the United States (58%), Germany (9%), and Italy (6%), which did not correlate with citation counts. Transplantation (18%), Pediatric Nephrology (16%), and American Journal of Transplantation (11%) had the highest publication volume, which did not correlate with citation count. The main topics were medical renal disease, drug monitoring, compliance, and viruses. Most of the top-cited papers (179; 90%) were published after 1991. The difference in the number of times cited between papers published before and after 1991 was insignificant (75 ± 24 vs 80 ± 42; P = 0.59). There was a difference in impact index for the same period (48 ± 15 vs 22 ± 10; P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The most-cited papers were concentrated in three journals, but the top three cited papers were published elsewhere. Recent publications were more cited with a higher impact than older papers. Despite the importance of surgery in transplantation, there is a paucity of high-impact papers on this topic.

Surgical publication activity in the English literature over a 10-year interval

Background

Surgical publication activity in the English literature over a 10-year interval may have changed. This study sought to identify which countries make the most contributions and whether significant shifts have occurred in this time.

Methods

Screening of 17 international journals in PubMed was performed for the time periods 2006-2007 and 2016-2017, for papers published by a first author belonging to a general surgical department. Data were collected by country regarding the total number of publications, cumulative impact factors (IFs), publications per inhabitant, IFs per inhabitant, and number of RCTs, meta-analyses and systematic reviews per country in both periods.

Results

A total of 2247 and 3029 papers were found for 2006-2007 and 2016-2017 respectively. In 2006-2007, most papers (605, 26·9 per cent; 2697·3 IFs) came from the USA, followed by Japan (284, 12·6 per cent; 1042·1 IFs) and the UK (197, 8·8 per cent; 923·1 IFs). In 2016-2017, the USA led again with 898 papers (29·6 per cent; 4575·3 IFs), followed by Japan with 414 papers (13·7 per cent; 1556·6 IFs) and the Netherlands with 167 (5·5 per cent; 885·2 IFs). From the top 15 countries, Sweden, the Netherlands and Switzerland contributed the most articles per inhabitant during both time periods. During both periods, the UK published the most RCTs, meta-analyses and systematic reviews.

Conclusion

Surgeons from the USA were the most productive in total number of publications during both time periods. However, smaller European countries were more active than the USA in relation to their population size.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Most Cited Articles in Global Reconstructive Surgery

BACKGROUND

A substantial global inequality exists between surgical need and the availability of safe, affordable surgical care. Low- and middle-income countries have the greatest burden of untreated surgical disease and addressing this inequity is the goal of the Global Surgery movement. Reconstructive surgery is a fundamental component of Global Surgery as it is central to the appropriate treatment of trauma, burns, wounds, and congenital malformations. The objective of this study was to analyze the most frequently cited articles in the field of global reconstructive surgery to understand the main publication trends.

METHODS

The 25 most cited articles relating to global reconstructive surgery were identified from all available journals through the Web of Science online database. The following data were extracted from each included article: title, source journal, publication year, total citations, average citations per year, authors, main subject, reconstructive surgery subspecialty, country, and institution of origin.

RESULTS

The average number of citations per article was 21.7 (median, 19; range, 10-40). Most articles originated from the United States, and only 1 originated from a low-income country. The majority of the articles focused on cleft lip and palate (CLP) (72%), with few articles discussing burns or trauma. The main discussion themes were the quality of care provided in low- and middle-income countries both by local and visiting teams, the burden of diseases in relation to global reconstructive surgery, and the impact of surgical interventions economically and on patients.

CONCLUSIONS

The number of research articles and citations related to global reconstructive surgery are limited. Despite having a lower incidence than burns or trauma, there is a preponderance of reports focusing on missions treating CLP. These findings suggest that more research funding could be invested in global reconstructive surgery for conditions other than CLP.

A comparison of the academic impact of plastic surgery units in the United Kingdom and Ireland using bibliometric analysis

Academic output is just one aspect of a successful career as a plastic surgeon. However, for those with a strong interest in academia, the academic output of a department will likely be a key factor when deciding how to rank jobs. The aim of this study was to quantify and rank the academic output of plastic surgery units across the UK and Ireland. The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science Bibliometric analysis tool was used to collate cumulative (1950-2016), 10 year (2006-2016) and 3 years (2013-2015) research output data for plastic surgery units in the UK and Ireland. Sixty-six plastic surgery units were identified. Departments were ranked for each time period according to the number of papers produced, number of citations (Nc) and h-index (a measure of the impact of scientific output). The top 3 departments for number of papers in the last 10 years were The Royal Free Hospital, London (226) Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford (218), and Morriston Hospital and Swansea (188). The top 3 for h-number were The Royal Free Hospital (21) Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester (18) and Morriston Hospital (17). Academic output varies across plastic surgery units in the UK and Ireland. A number of departments have consistently maintained high academic outputs across the years and will be of interest to surgeons hoping to pursue a career in academia.

The Evolving Presence of Women in Academic Plastic Surgery: A Study of the Past 40 Years

BACKGROUND

Among surgical subspecialties, plastic surgery holds the highest percentage of women, and, the female contingent of board-certified plastic surgeons and trainees has grown steadily. However, their academic impact has been underestimated. We present the academic footprint of female plastic surgeons over the past 40 years.

METHODS

A list of female plastic surgeons currently active at, and retired from, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited plastic surgery residency programs was compiled. Each surgeon was searched on PubMed to gather their total number of publications, journals, and topics of research after completion of training. Date of publication and 5-year impact factor for each journal were recorded. Publications were organized into 10-year periods (1976 to 1985, 1986 to 1995, 1996 to 2005, and 2006 to 2016).

RESULTS

One hundred fifty-five currently active and 80 retired academic female plastic surgeons were identified, who published 2982 articles in 479 peer-reviewed journals. The average 5-year impact factor was 4.093. The number of publications increased with each decade: 37 (1976 to 1985), 218 (1986 to 1995), 472 (1996 to 2005), and 2255 (2006 to 2016). The most commonly published areas were hand/nerve (22 percent), craniofacial (21 percent), and breast (20 percent). Over time, publications in hand/nerve research decreased (76, 60, 38, and 14 percent, respectively); craniofacial-related publications increased (8, 11, 18, and 23 percent, respectively); and publications in breast research increased (0, 8, 9, and 24 percent, respectively). The 2006 to 2016 period yielded the most even distribution of research topics.

CONCLUSION

The academic contribution of female plastic surgeons has substantially increased in number and has become more evenly distributed across subspecialty topics.

Worldwide research productivity in the field of back pain: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to show the world research productivity in the field of back pain and to help researchers follow the scientific development and promote the cooperation in this field.

METHODS

Web of Science (WoS) database was searched from 1995 to 2016 without other restrictions. The keywords were as follows: "lumbar NEAR pain," "back pain," "dorsalgia," "backache," "lumbago," "back NEAR disorder," and "discitis." The following information of retrieved articles was analyzed: countries/territories, journals, publication year, authors, citation reports, and institutions. Publication activity was further adjusted for countries by gross domestic product (GDP) and population size.

RESULTS

A total of 50,970 articles were retrieved in WoS database from 1995 to 2016. The United States published the biggest number of articles (16,818, 33.00%), followed by England (4,582, 8.99%), Germany (3,871, 7.60%), Canada (3,613, 7.09%), and Australia (3,063, 6.01%). Sweden ranked the first after adjusted for publication, and Netherlands ranked the first after adjusted for GDP. Besides, there was positive correlation between total number of publications and GDP for each country (P < .05). Harvard University was the most productive institution (917, 1.80%), Maher CG was the most productive author (229, 0.45%) and Spine was the most popular journal (3605, 7.07%) in the field of back pain research. Moreover, the article titled "Clinical importance of changes in chronic pain intensity measured on an 11-point numerical pain rating scale" in Pain had the highest citations (1749).

CONCLUSION

There was a significant increase in annual publications concerning back pain research worldwide. The total number of publications was positively associated with GDP in main productive countries. The United States was the most productive country, Harvard University was the most productive institution, Maher CG was the most productive author and Spine was the most popular journal in the field of back pain.

Trends in Rhinoplasty Research: A 20-Year Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Rhinoplasty is a popular aesthetic and reconstructive surgical procedure. It is one of the top five surgical cosmetic procedures performed worldwide.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate global trends in rhinoplasty research spanning 20 years between 1994 and 2013.

METHODS

The top 15 plastic surgery and otolaryngology journals containing rhinoplasty research were determined using impact factors (IF). A database of rhinoplasty articles from 1994 to 2013 was created to include the following classifications: IF, authors' geographic location, study design, level of evidence (LOE), and pertinence to aesthetic or reconstructive rhinoplasty. Productivity index and productivity share were calculated for each region.

RESULTS

A total of 1244 rhinoplasty articles were included in the database. The mean IF among the 15 journals increased from 0.75 in 1994 to 1.90 in 2013 (p < 0.001). The majority of rhinoplasty publications were clinical in study design (91.0%) and were predominantly of weaker LOE (level IV: 42.4%; level V: 33.2%). The USA led in proportion of total rhinoplasty publications by volume and productivity index (37.9%, 41.2%), followed by Asia (29.1%, 28.2%) and Western Europe (18.8%, 18.2%). The majority of articles published were classified as aesthetic (60.4%), whereas 30.6% were reconstructive; there was a significant increase in the proportion of aesthetic rhinoplasty articles published per year (p = 0.009).

CONCLUSIONS

The USA has consistently been the most productive country in rhinoplasty research. However, its lead has diminished over the last 20 years. The trend in rhinoplasty research appears to be toward aesthetic rather than reconstructive topics. Attention should be given to producing stronger LOE studies.

Conversion of Plastic Surgery meeting abstract presentations to full manuscripts: a brazilian perspective

Objective

to assess the conversion rate of Plastic Surgery meeting abstract presentations to full manuscript publications and examine factors associated with this conversion.

Methods

we assessed the abstracts presented at the 47th and 48th Brazilian Congresses of Plastic Surgery by cross-referencing with multiple databases. We analyzed the Abstracts' characteristics associated with full manuscript publications.

Results

of the 200 abstracts presented, 50 abstracts were subsequently published in full, giving the conference a conversion rate of 25%. The mean time to publish was 15.00±13.75 months. In total, there were 4.93±1.63 authors per abstract and 67.8±163 subjects per abstract; 43.5% of the abstracts were of retrospective studies; 69% comprised the plastic surgery topics head and neck, and chest and trunk, and 88.5% had no statistical analysis. Overall, 80% of the manuscripts were published in plastic surgery journals, 76% had no impact factor and 52% had no citations. Bivariate and multivariate analyses revealed the presence of statistical analysis to be the most significant (p<0.05) predictive factor of conversion of abstracts into full manuscripts.

Conclusion

the conversion rate found from this bibliometric research appeared a bit lower than the conversion trend of international plastic surgery meetings, and statistical analysis was a determinant of conversion success.

A global bibliometric analysis of otolaryngology: Head and neck surgery literature

OBJECTIVE

Bibliometrics uses analysis of content and citations of journal articles to quantify trends in published data. We aim to use bibliometric analysis to identify the global contribution by country to the ENT surgical literature over a 5-year period.

DATA SOURCE

The top 20 countries for number of articles published in surgery and the 11 English-language otolaryngology surgical journals with the highest impact factors (IF) were included. Numbers of scientific articles per year (2009-2013) per country for each journal were identified through PubMed. As a marker of quality, a mean IF for each country was calculated, using number of articles and journal IF. These data were compared against population, GDP and dollars spent on research.

RESULTS

In total, 10 574 articles were included. The USA was the largest contributor, with 4462 articles published over 5 years. The second largest was the UK (1215 articles). Spain's mean IF was 2.136, followed by Taiwan (2.110). The Netherlands (19.7) and the UK (18.9) had the highest number of publications per million population. When considering overall research spending per country, Greece had the most cost-effective publication output. The least cost-effective country was Japan. India, Greece and Japan had the greatest increase in publication quality.

CONCLUSIONS

Bibliometric analysis can be used to identify not only major centres of English-language ENT surgical research, such as the USA and UK but centres that are producing high-quality data, such as Spain, and cost-effective research, such as the UK. It can also highlight areas of increasing success in ENT research.

The Drivers of Academic Success in Cleft and Craniofacial Centers: A 10-Year Analysis of over 2000 Publications

BACKGROUND

Cleft and craniofacial centers require significant investment by medical institutions, yet variables contributing to their academic productivity remain unknown. This study characterizes the elements associated with high academic productivity in these centers.

METHODS

The authors analyzed cleft and craniofacial centers accredited by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. Variables such as university affiliation; resident training; number of plastic surgery, oral-maxillofacial, and dental faculty; and investment in a craniofacial surgery, craniofacial orthodontics fellowship program, or both, were obtained. Craniofacial and cleft-related research published between July of 2005 and June of 2015 was identified. A stepwise multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to measure outcomes of total publications, summative impact factor, basic science publications, total journals, and National Institutes of Health funding.

RESULTS

One hundred sixty centers were identified, comprising 920 active faculty, 34 craniofacial surgery fellowships, and eight craniofacial orthodontic fellowships; 2356 articles were published in 191 journals. Variables most positively associated with a high number of publications were craniofacial surgery and craniofacial orthodontics fellowships (β = 0.608), craniofacial surgery fellowships (β = 0.231), number of plastic surgery faculty (β = 0.213), and university affiliation (β = 0.165). Variables most positively associated with high a number of journals were craniofacial surgery and craniofacial orthodontics fellowships (β = 0.550), university affiliation (β = 0.251), number of plastic surgery faculty (β = 0.230), and craniofacial surgery fellowship (β = 0.218). Variables most positively associated with a high summative impact factor were craniofacial surgery and craniofacial orthodontics fellowships (β = 0.648), craniofacial surgery fellowship (β = 0.208), number of plastic surgery faculty (β = 0.207), and university affiliation (β = 0.116). Variables most positively associated with basic science publications were craniofacial surgery and craniofacial orthodontics fellowships (β = 0.676) and craniofacial surgery fellowship (β = 0.208). The only variable associated with National Institutes of Health funding was craniofacial surgery and craniofacial orthodontics fellowship (β = 0.332).

CONCLUSION

Participation in both craniofacial surgery and orthodontics fellowships demonstrates the strongest association with academic success; craniofacial surgery fellowship, university affiliation, and number of surgeons are also predictive.

Trends in ophthalmology journals: a five-year bibliometric analysis (2009-2013)

AIM

To explore the trends in the ophthalmic literature over a 5-year period in relation to country, research expenditure and demographics.

METHODS

Articles published between 2009 and 2013 by the 20highest-contributing countries in the 20 top-ranked ophthalmology journals were identified by their country of affiliation. The number of articles published and mean impact factor were measured per country for each year and trends explored using regression analysis with 5-year and 10-year forecasts calculated. Data on research expenditure was collected and tested for correlation with the number of articles and mean impact factor.

RESULTS

The analysis included 19 338 articles. The USA, UK and Europe accounted for 60.2% of articles published, with the USA contributing 7388 articles (34.0%). The USA also demonstrated the highest mean impact factor (3.5). Research expenditure was significantly correlated with both research output (r=0.86, P<0.001) and scholarly impact (r=0.42, P<0.001). China (P<0.01), Korea (P<0.01) and India (P<0.02) demonstrated a significant growth in research output over the study period. The research contribution of these three countries combined is forecasted to overtake that of Europe within ten years, with China expected to be the second-largest contributor within five years. These countries were also among those demonstrating the greatest growth in research expenditure.

CONCLUSION

While the USA and European countries are major contributors of ophthalmic research, the productivity of some Asian countries is growing impressively. The contribution of China, Korea and India is forecasted to outweigh that of Europe by 2023. Research expenditure is highly correlated with research productivity and these trends reflect the differing economic priorities across the world.

Ireland's contribution to urology and nephrology research in the new millennium: a bibliometric analysis

INTRODUCTION

Bibliometrics is the statistical analysis of written publications. Bibliometric analyses have been performed across a range of biomedical disciplines. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of Irish urology and nephrology research and to analyse how this compares internationally.

METHODS

We performed a retrospective bibliometric analysis of the top 20 ranking journals in the field of "Urology and Nephrology" based on their 5 years impact factor, as obtained from the ISI Journal Citation Report database over the 15-year study period, 2000-2015. Utilising the Pubmed database, a search phrase was constructed using country of affiliation, year of publication and journal title. The abstracts of the Irish publications identified were analysed for their institution of origin, article theme and content.

RESULTS

A total of 67,740 article abstracts were analysed over the 15 years study period. As anticipated, the USA accounted for the largest number of publications by a country [28,206 (41.64 % of all articles)]. Ireland contributed 347 articles in total (0.51 % of all articles); however, ranking according to population per million was 13th worldwide. Ireland's contribution to urology and nephrology research was highest in the BJUI-British Journal of Urology International [76 articles (21.90 % of Irish total)].

CONCLUSION

We believe this study to be the largest bibliometric analysis in the field of urology and nephrology internationally. This study provides a novel overview of the current Irish urology- and nephrology-related research, and examines how our results compare within the international community.

Global methaemoglobinaemia research output (1940-2013): a bibliometric analysis

Bibliometric studies, which involve the use of statistical methods, are increasingly being used for research assessment. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to evaluate the publication pattern of methaemoglobinaemia research output at the global level based on the Scopus database. We analysed selected documents with "methemoglobinemia", or "methaemoglobinaemia" as a part of the title and reported the following parameters: trends of publication output, country of publication, journal pattern, collaborative measures, citations pattern, and institute productivity. A total of 1770 articles were published worldwide. The time trend for the number of articles showed an increase after 2000. The highest number of articles related to methaemoglobinaemia was from the USA (24.8 %), followed distantly by the UK (4.5 %), India (3.7 %), and France (3.7 %). No data related to methaemoglobinaemia were published from 152 countries. The total number of citations at the date of data collection was 10,080, with an average of 5.7 citations per document. The USA and UK had the highest h-index of 31 and 14, respectively, and six countries had an h-index of 9-14. It is notable that Canada was ranked eighth in the number of publications but fourth in h-index and India was ranked third in the number of publications but eighth in h-index. Furthermore, Canada produced the most internationally collaborated papers out of the total number of publications for each country (16.1 %), followed by the UK (13.9 %). This bibliometric analysis provides data contributing to a better understanding of the methaemoglobinaemia research field. The number of publications on methaemoglobinaemia increased significantly after 2000. The USA was the most productive country as measured by total publications. The USA and UK achieved the highest h-index in the field of methaemoglobinaemia research, signifying a higher quality of research than other countries.
