Glioma and Peptidergic Systems: Oncogenic and Anticancer Peptides

Glioma cells overexpress different peptide receptors that are useful for research, diagnosis, management, and treatment of the disease. Oncogenic peptides favor the proliferation, migration, and invasion of glioma cells, as well as angiogenesis, whereas anticancer peptides exert antiproliferative, antimigration, and anti-angiogenic effects against gliomas. Other peptides exert a dual effect on gliomas, that is, both proliferative and antiproliferative actions. Peptidergic systems are therapeutic targets, as peptide receptor antagonists/peptides or peptide receptor agonists can be administered to treat gliomas. Other anticancer strategies exerting beneficial effects against gliomas are discussed herein, and future research lines to be developed for gliomas are also suggested. Despite the large amount of data supporting the involvement of peptides in glioma progression, no anticancer drugs targeting peptidergic systems are currently available in clinical practice to treat gliomas.

Minireview: functional roles of tissue kallikrein, kinins, and kallikrein-related peptidases in lung cancer

Despite campaigns and improvements in detection and treatment, lung cancer continues to increase worldwide and represents a major public health problem. One approach to treating patients suffering from lung cancer is to target surface receptors overexpressed on tumor cells, such as GPCR-family kinin receptors, and proteases that control tumor progression, such as kallikrein-related peptidases (KLKs). These proteases have been visualized in recent years due to their contribution to the progression of cancers, such as prostate and ovarian cancer, facilitating the invasive and metastatic capacity of tumor cells in these tissues. In fact, KLK3 is the specific prostate antigen, the only tissue-specific biomarker used to diagnose this malignancy. In lung cancer to date, evidence indicates that KLK5, KLK6, KLK8, KLK11, and KLK14 are the major peptidases regulated and involved in its progression. The expression levels of KLKs in this neoplasm are modulated by the secretome of the different cell types present in the tumor microenvironment, the cancer subtype and the tumor stage, among others. Considering the multiple functions of kinin receptors and KLKs, this review highlights their roles, even considering the SARS-CoV-2 effects. Since lung cancer is often diagnosed in advanced stages, our efforts should focus on early diagnosis, validating for example specific KLKs, especially in high-risk populations such as smokers and people exposed to carcinogenic fumes, oil fields, and contaminated workplaces, unexplored fields to investigate. Furthermore, their modulation could be considered as a promising approach in lung cancer therapeutics.

An overview of kinin mediated events in cancer progression and therapeutic applications

Kinins are bioactive peptides generated in the inflammatory milieu of the tissue microenvironment, which is involved in cancer progression and inflammatory response. Kinins signals through activation of two G-protein coupled receptors; inducible Bradykinin Receptor B1 (B1R) and constitutive receptor B2 (B2R). Activation of kinin receptors and its cross-talk with receptor tyrosine kinases activates multiple signaling pathways, including ERK/MAPK, PI3K, PKC, and p38 pathways regulating cancer hallmarks. Perturbations of the kinin-mediated events are implicated in various aspects of cancer invasion, matrix remodeling, and metastasis. In the tumor microenvironment, kinins initiate fibroblast activation, mesenchymal stem cell interactions, and recruitment of immune cells. Albeit the precise nature of kinin function in the metastasis and tumor microenvironment are not completely clear yet, several kinin receptor antagonists show anti-metastatic potential. Here, we showcase an overview of the complex biology of kinins and their role in cancer pathogenesis and therapeutic aspects.

The versatile role of the contact system in cardiovascular disease, inflammation, sepsis and cancer

The human contact system consists of plasma proteins, which - after contact to foreign surfaces - are bound to them, thereby activating the zymogens of the system into enzymes. This activation mechanism gave the system its name - contact system. It is considered as a procoagulant and proinflammatory response mechanism, as activation finally leads to the generation of fibrin and bradykinin. To date, no physiological processes have been described that are mediated by contact activation. However, contact system factors play a pathophysiological role in numerous diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, colitis, sepsis, and cancer. Contact system factors are therefore an interesting target for new therapeutic options in different clinical conditions.

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel 2-imino-4-thiazolidinones as Potential Antitumor Agents for Glioblastoma

AIMS

The purpose of our study was to explore the molecular hybridization between 2-imino-4-thizolidione and piridinic scaffolds and its potential antitumor activity.

BACKGROUND

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive glioma tumor clinically diagnosed malignant and highly recurrent primary brain tumor type. The standard of treatment for a glioblastoma is surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy using temozolomide. However, the chemoresistance has become the main barrier to treatment success. 2-imino-4-thiazolidinones are an important class of heterocyclic compounds that feature anticancer activity; however the antiglioblastoma activity is yet to be explored.

OBJECTIVE

To synthesize and characterize a series of novel 2-imino-4-thiazolidinones and evaluate their antiglioblastoma activity.

METHOD

The 2-imino-4-thiazolidinone (5a-p) was synthesized according to the literature with modifications. Compounds were identified and characterized using spectroscopic analysis and X-ray diffraction. The antitumor activity was analyzed by 3-(4,5- dimethyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay both in primary astrocyte and glioma (C6). Apoptosis and cell cycle phase were determined by flow cytometry analysis. The expression of caspase-3/7 was measured by luminescence assay. Oxidative stress parameters as: determination of reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity and total sulfhydryl content quantification were analyzed by colorimetric assays according to literature.

RESULTS

Among sixteen synthesized compounds, three displayed potent antitumor activities against tested glioblastoma cell line showed IC50 values well below the standard drug temozolomide. Therefore, compounds 5a, 5l and 5p were evaluated using cell cycle and death analysis, due to potent toxicity (2.17±1.17, 6.24±0.59, 2.93±1.12µM, respectively) in C6 cell line. The mechanism of action studies demonstrated that 5a and 5l induced apoptosis significantly increase the percentage of cells in Sub-G1 phase in the absence of necrosis. Consistent with these results, caspase-3/7 assay revealed that 5l presents pro-apoptotic activity due to the significant stimulation of caspases-3/7. Moreover, 5a, 5l and 5p increased antioxidant defense and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.

CONCLUSION

The compounds were synthesized with good yield and three of these presented (5a, 5l and 5p) good cytotoxicity against C6 cell line. Both affected cell cycle distribution via arresting more C6 cell line at Sub-G1 phase promoting apoptosis. Furthermore, 5a, 5l and 5p modulated redox status. These findings suggest that these compounds can be considered as promising lead molecules for further development of potential antitumor agents.

Novel Bradykinin Receptor Inhibitors Inhibit Proliferation and Promote the Apoptosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells by Inhibiting the ERK Pathway

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide. Studies have shown that bradykinin (BK) is highly expressed in liver cancer. We designed the novel BK receptor inhibitors J051-71 and J051-105, which reduced the viability of liver cancer cells and inhibited the formation of cancer cell colonies. J051-71 and J051-105 reduced cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in HepG2 and BEL-7402 cells, which may be due to the inhibition of the extracellular regulated protein kinase (ERK) signaling pathway. In addition, these BK receptor inhibitors reversed the cell proliferation induced by BK in HepG2 and BEL-7402 cells by downregulating B1 receptor expression. Inhibiting B1 receptor expression decreased the protein levels of p-ERK and reduced the malignant progression of HCC, providing a potential target for HCC therapy.

Mesenchymal stem cell-glioblastoma interactions mediated via kinin receptors unveiled by cytometry

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most malignant and devastating brain tumors. The presence of highly therapy-resistant GBM cell subpopulations within the tumor mass, rapid invasion into brain tissues and reciprocal interactions with stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment contributes to an inevitable fatal prognosis for the patients. We highlight the most recent evidence of GBM cell crosstalk with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which occurs either by direct cell-cell interactions via gap junctions and microtubules or cell fusion. MSCs and GBM paracrine interactions are commonly observed and involve cytokine signaling, regulating MSC tropism toward GBM, their intra-tumoral distribution, and immune system responses. MSC-promoted effects depending on their cytokine and receptor expression patterns are considered critical for GBM progression. MSC origin, tumor heterogeneity and plasticity may also determine the outcome of such interactions. Kinins and kinin-B1 and -B2 receptors play important roles in information flow between MSCs and GBM cells. Kinin-B1 receptor activity favors tumor migration and fusion of MSCs and GBM cells. Flow and image (tissue) cytometry are powerful tools to investigate GBM cell and MSC crosstalk and are applied to analyze and characterize several other cancer types.

Short review of SEC, a potential dexamethasone-sparing regimen for glioblastoma: Spironolactone, ecallantide, clotrimazole

This paper presents a short review of data supporting a dexamethasone sparing regimen, SEC, to reduce glioblastoma related brain edema. The conclusion of the reviewed data is that the rationale and risk/benefit ratio favors a pilot study to determine if the three drug regimen of SEC can reduce need for corticosteroid use during the course of glioblastoma. Details of how selected pathophysiological aspects of brain edema occurring during the course of glioblastoma and its treatment intersect with the established action of the three old drugs of SEC indicate that they can be repurposed to reduce that edema. Current first-line treatment of this edema is dexamethasone or related corticosteroids. There are multiple negative prognostic implications of both the edema itself and of dexamethasone, prime among them shortened survival, making a dexamethasone sparing regimen highly desirable. SEC uses spironolactone, an antihypertensive potassium-sparing diuretic acting by mineralocorticoid receptor inhibition, ecallantide acting to inhibit kallikrein activation marketed to treat hereditary angioedema, and clotrimazole, an old antifungal drug that inhibits intermediate conductance Ca++ activated K+ channel (KCa3.1). These three old drugs are well known to most clinicians, have a well-tolerated safety history, and have a robust preclinical database showing their potential to reduce the specific edema of glioblastoma. Additionally, these three drugs were chosen by virtue of each having preclinical evidence of glioblastoma growth and/or migration inhibition independent of their edema reduction action. A clinical study of SEC is being planned.

Photochemical and Photobiological Properties of Pyridyl-pyrazol(in)e-Based Ruthenium(II) Complexes with Sub-micromolar Cytotoxicity for Phototherapy

The discovery of new light-triggered prodrugs based on ruthenium (II) complexes is a promising approach for photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT). The light-mediated activation of "strained" Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes resulted in ligand release and produced a ligand-deficient metal center capable of forming covalent adducts with biomolecules such as DNA. Based on the strategy of exploiting structural distortion to activate photochemistry, biologically active small molecules were coordinated to a Ru(II) scaffold to create light-triggered dual-action agents. Thirteen new Ru(II) complexes with pyridyl-pyrazol(in)e ligands were synthesized, and their photochemical reactivity and anticancer properties were investigated. Isomeric bidentate ligands were investigated, where "regular" ligands (where the coordinated nitrogens in the heterocycles are linked by C-C atoms) were compared to "inverse" isomers (where the coordinated nitrogens in the heterocycles are linked by C-N atoms). Coordination of the regular 3-(pyrid-2-yl)-pyrazol(in)es to a Ru(II) bis-dimethylphenanthroline scaffold yielded photoresponsive compounds with promising photochemical and biological properties, in contrast to the inverse 1-(pyrid-2-yl)-pyrazolines. The introduction of a phenyl ring to the 1N-pyrazoline cycle increased the distortion in complexes and improved ligand release upon light irradiation (470 nm) up to 5-fold in aqueous media. Compounds 1-8, containing pyridyl-pyrazol(in)e ligands, were at least 20-80-fold more potent than the parent pyridyl-pyrazol(in)es, and exhibited biological activity in the dark, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) values ranging from 0.2 to 7.6 μM in the HL60 cell line, with complete growth inhibition upon light irradiation. The diversification of coligands and introduction of a carboxylic acid into the Ru(II) complex resulted in compounds 9-12, with up to 146-fold improved phototoxicity indices compared with complexes 1-8.

Bradykinin promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion of cervical cancer cells through STAT3 signaling pathways

It has been reported recently that bradykinin (BK) is involved in the regulation of various processes in cancer cells. However, its role and underlying mechanism of action in cervical cancer (CC) are still unknown. In the present study, it was revealed that BK promoted proliferation, migration, and invasion of CC cells, whereas bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist HOE140 had the inverse effect. Furthermore, it was confirmed that overexpression of bradykinin B2 receptor (B2R) facilitated the proliferation, migration, and invasion of BK-treated CC cells, while knockdown of B2R had the opposite effect. Mechanistically, the present results revealed that the BK/B2R-induced biological function of CC cells occured by activating STAT3 signaling pathways, and that knockdown of B2R or B2R antagonist had the opposite effects. Moreover, it was demonstrated that BK/B2R facilitated CC cell migration and invasion by upregulating the expression of the STAT3-regulated products MMP2 and MMP9, while downregulating the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein cleaved caspase-9. Thus, the present findings revealed that BK promoted CC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion by binding to B2R via STAT3 signaling pathways.

Anticancer properties of 5Z-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-2-(4-hydroxyphenylamino)-thiazol-4-one

4-thiazolidinones, which are privileged structures in medicinal chemistry, comprise the well-known class of heterocycles and are a source of new drug-like compounds. Undoubtedly, the 5-bulky-substituted-2,4-thiazolidinediones - a class of antihyperglycemic glitazones, which are peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) agonists, are the most described group among them. As there are various chemically distinct 4-thiazolidinones, different subtypes have been selected for studies; however, their main pharmacological profiles are similar. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticancer activity of 5Z-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-2-(4-hydroxyphenylamino)-thiazol-4-one (Les-236) in four human cancer cell lines, A549, SCC-15, SH-SY5Y, and CACO-2, and investigate its impact on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the apoptotic process as well as cytotoxicity and metabolism in these cell lines. The cell lines were exposed to increasing concentrations (1 nM to 100 µM) of the studied compound for 6, 24, and 48 h, and later, ROS production, cell viability, caspase-3 activity, and cell metabolism were examined. The obtained results showed that the studied compound decreased the production of ROS, increased the release of lactate dehydrogenase, and decreased cell metabolism/proliferation in all the five cell lines at micromolar concentrations. Interestingly, over a wide range of concentrations (from 1 nM to 100 µM), Les-236 was able to increase the activity of caspase-3 in BJ (after 6 h of exposure), A549, CACO-2, and SCC-15 (after 48 h of exposure) cell lines which could be an effect of the activation of PPARγ-dependent pathways.

Noscapine, a Non-addictive Opioid and Microtubule-Inhibitor in Potential Treatment of Glioblastoma

Noscapine is a phthalide isoquinoline alkaloid that easily traverses the blood brain barrier and has been used for years as an antitussive agent with high safety. Despite binding opioid receptors, noscapine lacks significant hypnotic and euphoric effects rendering it safe in terms of addictive potential. In 1954, Hans Lettré first described noscapine as a mitotic poison. The drug was later tested for cancer treatment in the early 1960's, yet no effect was observed likely as a result of its short biological half-life and limited water solubility. Since 1998, it has regained interest thanks to studies from Emory University, which showed its anticancer activity in animal models with negligible toxicity. In contrast to other microtubule-inhibitors, noscapine does not affect the total intracellular tubulin polymer mass. Instead, it forces the microtubules to spend an increased amount of time in a paused state leading to arrest in mitosis and subsequently inducing mitotic slippage/mitotic catastrophe/apoptosis. In experimental models, noscapine does not induce peripheral neuropathy, which is common with other microtubule inhibitors. Noscapine also inhibits tumor growth and enhances cancer chemosensitivity via selective blockage of NF-κB, an important transcription factor in glioblastoma pathogenesis. Due to their anticancer activities and high penetration through the blood-brain barrier, noscapine analogues strongly deserve further study in various animal models of glioblastoma as potential candidates for future patient therapy.

Design and synthesis of phenylpiperazine derivatives as potent anticancer agents for prostate cancer

Novel thiourea (5a, 5b) and thiazolidinone derivatives (6a, 6b) were synthesized by hybridizing molecules starting from the compound 6-(4-phenylpiperazin-1-yl)pyridin-3-amine (4) which is known to show anticancer activity. The synthesis of the leading compound was carried out by using 1-(5-nitropyridin-2-yl)-4-phenylpiperazine (3) which was obtained by a novel method of the reaction of 2-chloro-5-nitropyridine (1) and N-phenylpiperazine (2). The structures of the compounds were confirmed using FTIR, ¹ H NMR, ¹³ C NMR, HRMS spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. The organic molecules were tested for their anticancer activities against prostate cancer (PC) cell lines: DU 145, PC-3 and LNCaP. As the compound 5a exerted the highest cytotoxic activity, IC₅₀ concentrations of compound 5a were further investigated in terms of morphology, colony-forming ability, RNA expression, fragmented DNA and cell cycle distributions of PC cell lines. Overall data revealed that compound 5a treatment induces apoptosis and DNA fragmentation in PC cell lines and inhibits cell cycle progression resulting in the accumulation of cells in either the G1 or the S phases.

Small molecule BKM1972 inhibits human prostate cancer growth and overcomes docetaxel resistance in intraosseous models

Bone metastasis is a major cause of prostate cancer (PCa) mortality. Although docetaxel chemotherapy initially extends patients' survival, in most cases PCa becomes chemoresistant and eventually progresses without a cure. In this study, we developed a novel small-molecule compound BKM1972, which exhibited potent in vitro cytotoxicity in PCa and other cancer cells regardless of their differences in chemo-responsiveness. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that BKM1972 effectively inhibited the expression of anti-apoptotic protein survivin and membrane-bound efflux pump ATP binding cassette B 1 (ABCB1, p-glycoprotein), presumably via signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3). BKM1972 was well tolerated in mice and as a monotherapy, significantly inhibited the intraosseous growth of chemosensitive and chemoresistant PCa cells. These results indicate that BKM1972 is a promising small-molecule lead to treat PCa bone metastasis and overcome docetaxel resistance.

Recent advances in the discovery of small molecules targeting glioblastoma

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most common central nervous system cancers. It is characterized as a fast-growing tumor that arises from multiple cell types with neural stem-cell-like properties. Additionally, GBM tumors are highly invasive, which is attributed to the presence of glioblastoma stem cells that makes surgery ineffective in most cases. Currently, temozolomide is the unique chemotherapy option approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for GBM treatment. This review analyzes the emergence and development of new synthetic small molecules discovered as promising anti-glioblastoma agents. A number of compounds were described herein and grouped according to the main chemical class used in the drug discovery process. Importantly, we focused only on synthetic compounds published in the last 10 years, thus excluding natural products. Furthermore, we included in this review only those most biologically active compounds with proven in vitro and/or in vivo efficacy.

Overexpression of the Kininogen-1 inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of glioma cells

Background

Glioma is the most common primary central nervous system tumor derived from glial cells. Kininogen-1 (KNG1) can exert antiangiogenic properties and inhibit proliferation of endothelial cells. The effect of KNG1 on the glioma is rarely reported, so our purpose in to explore its mechanism in glioma cells.

Methods

The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The KNG1-vector was transfected into the two glioma cells. The viability, apoptosis and cell cycle of glioma cells and microvessel density (MVD) were detected by cell counting kit-8 assay, flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, respectively. The expression were measured by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively. A tumor mouse model was established to determine apoptosis rate of brain tissue by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transfer-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) analysis.

Results

KNG1 was identified as the core gene and lowly expressed in the glioma cells. Overexpression of KNG1 inhibited cell viability and angiogenesis of glioma cells. Overexpression of KNG1 promoted the apoptosis and G1 phase cell cycle arrest of glioma cells. Moreover, the expressions of VEGF, cyclinD1, ki67, caspase-3/9 and XIAP were regulated by overexpression of KNG1. In addition, overexpression of KNG1 inhibited the activity of PI3K/Akt. Furthermore, overexpression of KNG1 decreased the tumor growth and promoted the apoptosis of decreased by overexpression of KNG1 in vivo. .

Conclusions

Overexpression of KNG1 suppresses glioma progression by inhibiting the proliferation and promoting apoptosis of glioma cells, providing a therapeutic strategy for the malignant glioma.

Synthesis and evaluation of thiazolidinone-pyrazole conjugates as anticancer and antimicrobial agents

AIM

To synthesize a series of new thiazolidinone-pyrazole hybrids (5a-o) and assess their anticancer (in vitro and in vivo) and antimicrobial activities.

RESULTS

The compounds 5h (against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells), 5e and 5i (against the human breast cancer [MDA-MB231] cell line) exhibited potent anticancer activity. All the compounds except 5g and 5e found to be less toxic for the human dermal fibroblast cells. The effective interactions of the compounds in silico with MDM2 exemplified their inhibitory potency. The derivatives also showed moderate antimicrobial activity.

CONCLUSION

The halogen atoms on various positions of the N-arylamino ring played an advantageous role in elevating the potency of the molecules. Thus, these conjugates could be used as a lead for further optimization to achieve promising therapeutics.

Exploiting cancer's phenotypic guise against itself: targeting ectopically expressed peptide G-protein coupled receptors for lung cancer therapy

Lung cancer, claiming millions of lives annually, has the highest mortality rate worldwide. This advocates the development of novel cancer therapies that are highly toxic for cancer cells but negligibly toxic for healthy cells. One of the effective treatments is targeting overexpressed surface receptors of cancer cells with receptor-specific drugs. The receptors-in-focus in the current review are the G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are often overexpressed in various types of tumors. The peptide subfamily of GPCRs is the pivot of the current article owing to the high affinity and specificity to and of their cognate peptide ligands, and the proven efficacy of peptide-based therapeutics. The article summarizes various ectopically expressed peptide GPCRs in lung cancer, namely, Cholecystokinin-B/Gastrin receptor, the Bombesin receptor family, Bradykinin B1 and B2 receptors, Arginine vasopressin receptors 1a, 1b and 2, and the Somatostatin receptor type 2. The autocrine growth and pro-proliferative pathways they mediate, and the distinct tumor-inhibitory effects of somatostatin receptors are then discussed. The next section covers how these pathways may be influenced or 'corrected' through therapeutics (involving agonists and antagonists) targeting the overexpressed peptide GPCRs. The review proceeds on to Nano-scaled delivery platforms, which enclose chemotherapeutic agents and are decorated with peptide ligands on their external surface, as an effective means of targeting cancer cells. We conclude that targeting these overexpressed peptide GPCRs is potentially evolving as a highly promising form of lung cancer therapy.

Effects of microRNA-26b on proliferation and invasion of glioma cells and related mechanisms

Neuroglioma is the most common primary malignant tumor in neurosurgery. Due to its short survival period and high patient mortality rate, neuroglioma is a major challenge in clinics. Elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms and associated molecular targets of neuroglioma can therefore benefit diagnosis and treatment of glioma. Previous studies have established the role of microRNA (miR)‑26b in various tumors, including breast cancer, lymphoma and glioma. Its function and mechanism in neuroglioma, however, remains to be elucidated. In the present study, in vitro cultured U87 glioma cells were randomly divided into miR‑26b mimic, miR‑26b inhibitor and respective control (NC) groups. MTT assay was performed to detect the effect of miR‑26b on cell proliferation, while a cell invasion assay detected its effects on cell invasion. Caspase‑3 activity was also quantified to test cell apoptosis, followed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting to detect the variation of Bcl‑2 expression under the effect of miR‑26b. miR‑26b mimics transfection upregulated its expression in U87 cells, which had significantly reduced Bcl‑2 mRNA and protein expression levels and higher casapse3 activity, and inhibited cell proliferation and invasion compared with the control group. The transfection of miR‑26b inhibitor, in contrast, facilitated U87 cell proliferation and invasion, inhibited caspase‑3 activity and elevated Bcl‑2 mRNA/protein expression. In conclusion, miR‑26 could facilitate apoptosis and inhibit proliferation/invasion of neuroglioma cells via downregulating Bcl‑2 expression and potentiating caspase-3 activity.
