Abstract
Labdanum resin or "gum" can be obtained from Cistus ladanifer L. by two different extraction methods: the Zamorean and the Andalusian processes. Although its main use is in the fragrance and perfumery sectors, ethnobotanical reports describe its use for medicinal purposes in managing hyperglycemia and mental illnesses. However, data concerning the bioactivities and pharmacological applications are scarce. In this work, it was found that the yield of labdanum resin extracted by the Andalusian process was 25-fold higher than the Zamorean one. Both resins were purified as absolutes, and the Andalusian absolute was purified into diterpenoid and flavonoid fractions. GC-EI-MS analysis confirmed the presence of phenylpropanoids, labdane-type diterpenoids, and methylated flavonoids, which are already described in the literature, but revealed other compounds, and showed that the different extracts presented distinct chemical profile. The potential antidiabetic activity, by inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, and the potential neuroprotective activity, by inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, were investigated. Diterpenoid fraction produced the higher α-amylase inhibitory effect (~30% and ~40% at 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, respectively). Zamorean absolute showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory effect (~14% and ~24%, at 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, respectively). Andalusian absolute showed the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect (~70% and ~75%, at 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, respectively). Using Caco-2 and HepG2 cell lines, Andalusian absolute and its purified fractions showed moderate cytotoxic/anti-proliferative activity at 24 h exposure (IC50 = 45-70 µg/mL, for Caco-2; IC50 = 60-80 µg/mL, for HepG2), whereas Zamorean absolute did not produce cytotoxicity (IC50 ≥ 200.00 µg/mL). Here we show, for the first time, that labdanum resin obtained by the Andalusian process, and its fractions, are composed of phytochemicals with anti-diabetic, neuroprotective and anti-proliferative potential, which are worth investigating for the pharmaceutical industry. However, toxic side-effects must also be addressed when using these products by ingestion, as done traditionally.

Abstract
Several foods are used in both the nutraceutical and health sectors; vegetable oils, for example, can prevent the onset of numerous diseases. The properties of these oils are related to their chemical composition and primarily to the presence of fatty acids. The present work aimed to determine the chemical profiles of Argania spinosa, Pinus halepensis, and Pistacia altantica oils, used in traditional Tunisian foods, and to evaluate some biological properties. We evaluated their antioxidant, anti-enzymatic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Linoleic acid was the main component of the three oils. P. atlantica oil showed more significant inhibitory activity against the enzymes studied than A. spinosa and P. halepensis. All three oils showed similar antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Furthermore, A. spinosa and P. halepensis oils showed antibiofilm activity against P. aeruginosa, with 30-40% inhibition. These results focus on the possible use of these oils in the nutraceutical and healthcare sectors.

Abstract
The members of the genus Hypericum have great potential to develop functional uses in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. With this in mind, we aimed to determine the chemical profiling and biological properties of different extracts (ethyl acetate, methanol and water) from two Hypericum species (H. montbretii and H. origanifolium). We combined two approaches (LC-DAD-MS and LC-NMR) to identify and quantify chemical compounds of the extracts. Antioxidant properties (free radical quenching, reducing power and metal chelating) and enzyme inhibitory effects (cholinesterase, tyrosinase, amylase and glucosidase) were determined as biological properties. The tested extracts were rich in caffeic acid derivatives and flavonoids, and among them, 3-caffeoyl quinic acid and myricetin-3-O-rhamnoside were found to be the main compounds. The total phenolic and flavonoid levels were determined to be 50.97-134.99 mg GAE/g and 9.87-82.63 mg RE/g, respectively. With the exception of metal chelating, the methanol and water extracts showed stronger antioxidant properties than the ethyl acetate extracts. However, different results were obtained for each enzyme inhibition assay, and in general, the ethyl acetate extracts present more enzyme-inhibiting properties than the water or methanol extracts. Results from chemical and biological analyses were combined using multivariate analysis, which allowed establishing relationships between composition and observed effects of the Hypericum extracts based on the extraction solvents. To gain more insights between chemical compounds and enzyme-inhibiting effects, we performed molecular docking analysis. We observed favorable interactions between certain compounds and the tested enzymes during our analysis, confirming the data obtained from the multivariate approach. In conclusion, the obtained results may shed light on the road from natural sources to functional applications, and the tested Hypericum species may be considered potential raw materials, with promising chemical constituents and biological activities.

Abstract
Sustainability, becoming essential for food processing and technology, sets goals for the characterization of resources considered as food waste. In this work, information about the GC-MS metabolites of peach peels was provided as a tool that can shed more light on the studied biological activities. In addition, distribution patterns and contribution of the chemical profile and free and bound phenolic compounds as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzymatic clusters in peach peels of different varieties of Bulgarian origin were studied. The two applied techniques (alkaline and acid hydrolysis) for releasing the bound phenolics reveal that alkaline hydrolysis is a better extraction approach. Still, the results indicate the prevalence of the free phenolics in the studied peach peel varieties. Total phenolics of peach wastes were positively correlated with their antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity results certainly defined the need of an individual interpretation for each variety, but the free phenolics fractions could be outlined with the strongest potential. The limited ability of the peels' extracts to inhibit α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase, and the moderate antimicrobial activity, on the other hand, indicate that the potential of peach peels is still sufficient to seek ways to valorize this waste. Indeed, this new information about peach peels can be used to characterize peach fruits from different countries and/or different food processes, as well as to promote the use of this fruit waste in food preparation.

Abstract
Enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors have been widely deployed for the detection of a range of contaminants in different food products due to their significant advantages over other (bio)sensing techniques. Nevertheless, their performance is greatly affected by the sample matrix itself or by the matrix they are presented with in pretreated samples, both of which can impact the accuracy as well as the sensitivity of the measurements. Therefore, and in order to acquire reliable and accurate measurements, matrix effects and their influence on sensor performance should be taken into consideration. Herein, acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-modified electrochemical sensors were employed for the detection of pesticides in vegetable oils. Sensor interrogation with pretreated oil samples, spiked with carbofuran, revealed the inhibitory potential of the extracted matrix varies between different types of vegetable oil and their fatty acid content. In addition, synergies between the extracted matrix from different types of vegetable oils and the carbamate pesticide, carbofuran, were observed, which led to significant deviations of the sensor's performance from its anticipated behavior in buffered solution. Taking the aforementioned into consideration, appropriate calibration curves for each type of vegetable oil were drafted, which allowed for the highly reproducible determination of different pesticide concentrations in pretreated real samples. Collectively, a better understanding of AChE inhibition by single or multiple contaminants present in vegetable oils was gained, which can find many applications in numerous fields, ranging from sensor development to the design of new pesticides and medicinal products.

Abstract
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE, E.C. 3.1.1.7) termed as the true cholinesterase functions to end cholinergic transmission at synapses. Due to its diverse expression in non-neural tissues such as erythrocytes and bones along with its various molecular forms, researchers seek a non-classical role for this protein. Here, the inhibitory action of unsaturated 18 carbon fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid and 20 carbon fatty acid arachidonic acid on AChE were investigated. Enzyme activity was measured in kinetic assay method according to Ellman assay utilizing acetylthiocholine. Analysis of the activity data revealed that among the fatty acids examined the IC50 values differed according to the length of the fatty acid and the number of the double bonds. Arachidonic acid, a 20-carbon fatty acid with 4 unsaturated bonds (20:4 n-6, cis 5,8,11,14) displayed an IC50 value of 2.78 µM and Ki value of 396.35 µM. Linoleic acid, an essential 18-carbon fatty acid (18:2 n-6, cis 9,12) had an IC50 value of 7.95 µM and Ki value of 8027.55 µM. The IC50 value of alpha-linolenic acid, 18-carbon fatty acid (18:3 n-3, cis-9,12,15) was found as 179.11 µM. Analysis of the data fit the inhibition mechanism for linoleic, alpha-linolenic and arachidonic acid as mixed-type; non-competitive. Molecular docking complied with these results yielding the best score for arachidonic acid. The alkenyl chain of the fatty acids predictably reached to the catalytic site while the carboxylate strongly interacted with the peripheric anionic site.

Abstract
Despite the fact that a considerable amount of effort has been invested in the development of biosensors for the detection of pesticides, there is still a lack of a simple and low-cost platform that can reliably and sensitively detect their presence in real samples. Herein, an enzyme-based biosensor for the determination of both carbamate and organophosphorus pesticides is presented that is based on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) immobilized on commercially available screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPEs) modified with carbon black (CB), as a means to enhance their conductivity. Most interestingly, two different methodologies to deposit the enzyme onto the sensor surfaces were followed; strikingly different results were obtained depending on the family of pesticides under investigation. Furthermore, and towards the uniform application of the functionalization layer onto the SPEs’ surfaces, the laser induced forward transfer (LIFT) technique was employed in conjunction with CB functionalization, which allowed a considerable improvement of the sensor’s performance. Under the optimized conditions, the fabricated sensors can effectively detect carbofuran in a linear range from 1.1 × 10−9 to 2.3 × 10−8 mol/L, with a limit of detection equal to 0.6 × 10−9 mol/L and chlorpyrifos in a linear range from 0.7 × 10−9 up to 1.4 × 10−8 mol/L and a limit of detection 0.4 × 10−9 mol/L in buffer. The developed biosensor was also interrogated with olive oil samples, and was able to detect both pesticides at concentrations below 10 ppb, which is the maximum residue limit permitted by the European Food Safety Authority.
