Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and death in patients. Despite considerable recent advances in the treatment of ischemic stroke, only a limited number of effective neuroprotective agents are available for stroke. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is a popular herbal plant, and numerous studies have indicated its health benefits for several diseases. Green tea is of interest due to its high content of catechin derivatives, including epicatechin, gallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin-3-gallate. This review tried to develop a feasible background for the potential effects of green tea and its bioactive derivatives concerning protection against ischemic stroke. Green tea's antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and neuroprotective effects are believed to be efficacious in stroke treatment. Evidence supports the idea that green tea can be used to assist in treating ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), the second most common subtype of stroke, remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The pathological mechanism of ICH is very complex, and it has been demonstrated that oxidative stress (OS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of ICH. Previous studies have shown that OS is a therapeutic target after ICH, and antioxidants have also achieved some benefits in the treatment of ICH. This review aimed to explore the promise of natural products therapy to target OS in ICH. We searched PubMed using the keywords "oxidative stress in intracerebral hemorrhage" and "natural products in intracerebral hemorrhage". Numerous animal and cell studies on ICH have demonstrated the potent antioxidant properties of natural products, including polyphenols and phenolic compounds, terpenoids, alkaloids, etc. In summary, natural products such as antioxidants offer the possibility of treatment of OS after ICH. However, researchers still have a long way to go to apply these natural products for the treatment of ICH more widely in the clinic.

Abstract
Background Previous studies show that the consumption of tea is associated with several beneficial outcomes for brain health, but there is little data among the elderly in China. Objective The objective was to explore the longitudinal relationship between tea consumption and the risk of cognitive decline. Methods The current data was obtained from the China Longitudinal Aging Study (CLAS), and a total of 3,246 residents aged 60 years and above were recruited in this study. Some of them (N = 111) underwent a standard T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), from which the volumes of the corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampus were calculated, and detailed tea consumption information was obtained through a standardized questionnaire at baseline. The cognitive diagnosis of each participant was made by attending psychiatrists at baseline and follow-up. Their overall cognitive function was assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), while their associative learning ability was assessed by an associative learning test (ALT). Finally, 1,545 elderly with normal cognitive function completed the baseline and follow-up assessment and were included in the final study. Results After controlling gender, education, smoking, take exercise and hobbies, we found that the elderly with tea consumption habits had a lower incidence rate of cognitive decline (p = 0.002, OR = 0.604, 95%CI:0.437~0.836) and tea consumption was negatively correlated with the change scores of MoCA (r = -0.056, p = 0.029). What's more, the CC_posterior volume of tea drinkers was significantly smaller than that of non-tea drinkers, while the baseline ALT score of tea drinkers was significantly higher than that of non-tea drinkers. The results of correlation analysis showed that the CC_posterior volume was significantly correlated with ALT change score (r = -0.319, p = 0.010). Conclusions The habit of tea consumption is associated with less incidence of cognitive impairment among the Chinese elderly, and it may prevent a decline in memory and associative learning by affecting the volume of the posterior corpus callosum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The weight of evidence suggests that sleep is essential for the processes of memory consolidation and sleep deprivation (SD) impairs the retention of long-term memory in both humans and experimental animals, which is associated with oxidative stress damage within the brain. Green tea polyphenols have revealed carcinogenic, antioxidant, anti-, and anti-mutagenic properties. We aimed to investigate the possible protective effect of green tea extract (GTE) and its main active catechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), on post-training total sleep deprivation (TSD) -induced spatial memory deficits and oxidative stress profile in the hippocampus of the rat. METHODS Male rats were treated with saline, GTE (100 and 200 mg/kg/day), and EGCG (50 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally for 21 days and then trained in Morris water maze (MWM) in a single day protocol. Immediately after the end of MWM training, animals were sleep deprived for 6 h by the gentle handling method, and then evaluated for spatial memory. Hippocampal levels of malondialdehyde, (MDA), and thiol was assessed as oxidant and antioxidant markers. RESULTS Spatial memory was impaired in the TSD group and GTE at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day as well as EGCG at the dose of 50 mg/kg/day could reverse the impairment to the saline-treated levels. Despite the unchanged MDA levels, hippocampal total thiol was significantly decreased after TSD and EGCG increased it to the basal levels. CONCLUSION In conclusion, green tea and its main catechin, EGCG, could prevent memory impairments during 6 h of TSD; probably through normalizing the antioxidant thiol defense system which was impaired during TSD.

Abstract
Antioxidant supplementation and physical exercise have been discussed as strategies to minimize neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated the neuroprotective effects of strength exercise (StrEx) and green tea (GT) supplementation, combined or not, on memory impairments induced by β-amyloid characterizing an AD-like condition in rats. Wistar rats were submitted to 8 weeks of StrEx, GT supplementation, or StrEx and GT combined. AD-like condition was induced by injection of Aβ (25-35) in the hippocampus. We evaluate object recognition (OR) and social recognition (SR) memory, and removed the rats' hippocampus for biochemical analysis. StrEx improved OR and SR. StrEx combined with GT improved OR and did not improve SR. GT reduced antioxidant capacity and improved acetylcholinesterase activity. Both strength exercise and green tea are neuroprotective against impairments resultant of β-amyloid, but benefits do not add up when the two interventions are associated.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have shown that in the aging society, a person dies from stroke every 3 minutes and 42 seconds, and vast numbers of people experience depression around the globe. The high prevalence and disability rates of stroke and depression introduce enormous challenges to public health. Accumulating evidence reveals that stroke is tightly associated with depression, and both diseases are linked to oxidative stress (OS). This review summarizes the mechanisms of OS and OS-mediated pathological processes, such as inflammation, apoptosis, and the microbial-gut-brain axis in stroke and depression. Pathological changes can lead to neuronal cell death, neurological deficits, and brain injury through DNA damage and the oxidation of lipids and proteins, which exacerbate the development of these two disorders. Additionally, aging accelerates the progression of stroke and depression by overactive OS and reduced antioxidant defenses. This review also discusses the efficacy and safety of several antioxidants and antidepressants in stroke and depression. Herein, we propose a crosstalk between OS, aging, stroke, and depression, and provide potential therapeutic strategies for the treatment of stroke and depression.

Abstract
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating subtype of stroke that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. However, up to now, there are no effective prevention methods or specific therapies to improve its clinical outcomes. Herein, we explore preliminarily the efficacy of crocin, a carotenoid extracted from the stigma of saffron known for its anti-oxidation and free radical scavenging activities, in a mouse ICH model induced with collagenase infusion. Crocin or saline was administrated 6 h after ICH and then every 12 h for up to 7 days. Neurological scores were examined on days 1, 3, and 7 after ICH. Mice were sacrificed after1, 3, and 7 days of crocin treatment for examination of histology and immunohistochemistry. The results showed that oral administration of crocin attenuated the neurological deficits and reduced the myelin loss, neuron degeneration, iron deposition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression in the early stage of ICH, making it potential to be an ideal candidate for medical therapy of ICH in clinic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brainstem hemorrhage (BSH) is the most dangerous and devastating subtype of intracerebral hemorrhage and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. However, to date, no effective prevention methods or specific therapies have been available to improve its clinical outcomes. We preliminarily explored the efficacy of deferoxamine (DFO), a clinical chelator known for its iron-scavenging activities, in a rat model of BSH induced with collagenase infusion. METHODS DFO or saline was administrated 6 hours after BSH induction and then every 12 hours for ≤7 days. The survival curve of the rats was created, and the neurological scores were examined on days 1, 3, and 7 after BSH. The rats were sacrificed after 1, 3, and 7 days of DFO treatment for histological examination and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS The results showed that administration of DFO delayed erythrocytes lysis, reduced iron deposition, reduced reactive oxygen species generation, reduced heme oxygenase-1 expression, and alleviated brain injury such as neuron degeneration and myelin sheath injury. However, DFO did not improve the survival rate and neurobehavioral outcomes in this model. CONCLUSIONS Administration of DFO had limited therapeutic effects on collagenase-induced brainstem hemorrhage in rats. Some potential explanations were proposed, and more preclinical work is required to clarify the controversial curative effect of DFO in ICH.

Abstract
This study focused on the fabrication of a rapid, highly sensitive and inexpensive technique for the quantification of imidacloprid residue in green tea, based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using highly roughned surface flower shaped silver nanostructure (as SERS substrate) coupled with the chemometrics algorithm. The basic principle of this method is imidacloprid yielded SERS signal after adsorption on Ag-NF under laser excitation by the electromagnetic enhancement and the intensity of the peak is proportional to the concentration ranging from 1.0 × 103 to 1.0 × 10-4 μg/mL. Among the models used, the GA-PLS (Genetic algorithm-partial least square) exhibited superiority to quantify imidacloprid residue in green tea. The model achieved Rp (correlation coefficient) of 0.9702 with RPD of 4.95% in the test set and RSD for precision recorded up to 4.50%. Therefore, the proposed sensor could be employed to quantify imidacloprid residue in green tea for the safeguarding of quality and human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The therapeutic strategies to manage neurodegenerative diseases remain limited and it is necessary to discover new agents for their prevention and control. Oxidative stress and inflammation play a main role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study is to review the effects of green tea catechins against the Neurodegenerative Diseases. METHODS In this study, we extensively reviewed all articles on the terms of Green tea, catechins, CNS disorders, and different diseases in PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases between the years 1990 and 2017. RESULTS The present study found that catechins, the major flavonoids in green tea, are powerful antioxidants and radical scavengers which possess the potential roles in the management of neurodegenerative diseases. Catechins modulate the cellular and molecular mechanisms through the inflammation-related NF-κB and the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathways. CONCLUSION The findings of the present review shows catechins could be effective against neurodegenerative diseases due to their antioxidation and anti-inflammation effects and the involved biochemical pathways including Nrf2 and NF-kB signaling pathways.

Abstract
Green tea from Camellia sinensis plays a well-established neuroprotective role in several neurodegenerative diseases, including intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, the other teas of the same plant do not have their properties well understood; but they can be as effective as green tea as an alternative therapy. In this study, we investigated the effects of supplementation with green tea and red tea from Camellia sinensis on motor deficits and striatum oxidative damage in rats submitted to hemorrhagic stroke (ICH). Male Wistar rats were supplemented with green tea, red tea, or vehicle for 10 days prior to ICH induction. After injury, the rats were submitted to motor tests (open field for locomotion, rotarod for balance, and neurological deficit scale (NDS)) 1, 3, and 7 days after ICH induction, while the tea supplementation was maintained. Subsequently, the rats were euthanized to striatal tissue dissection for biochemical analyzes (lipid peroxidation, reactive oxygen species, glutathione levels, and total antioxidant capacity). ICH caused locomotor and balance deficits, as well as increased the neurological deficit (NDS). Only red tea prevented locomotor deficits after injury. Green tea and red tea prevented balance deficits on the seventh day after ICH. On NDS evaluation, green tea presented a better neuroprotection than red tea (until day 3 after ICH injury). In addition, ICH increased reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation levels, without altering antioxidant markers. Green and red teas were effective in decreasing the lipid peroxidation levels. Therefore, green and red teas partially prevented the motor deficits and striatal oxidative damage induced by ICH. Based on our results, we can consider that the two teas seem to be equally effective to prevent motor deficits and striatal oxidative damage induced by hemorrhagic stroke in rats.

Abstract
Maternal deprivation (MD) in early life affects the development of the brain, causing cognitive losses in adulthood. Oxidative imbalance may be one of the factors that trigger these deficits. Therapies with antioxidant components, like green tea from Camellia sinensis (GT) has been used to treat or prevent memory deficits in a variety of conditions related to oxidative stress. Here we demonstrate that memory deficits caused by MD can be prevented by GT antioxidant activity in hippocampus. Pregnant female rats were used. Her puppies were submitted to MD and intake of GT. Recognition and aversive memory were evaluated, as well as hippocampal oxidative status. Data showed that MD prejudice short and long-term recognition and aversive memory and that GT protected memory. Hippocampal reactive oxygen species levels were increased in MD rats; this increase was avoided by GT supplementation. GSH was decreased on hippocampus MD rats. GT did not avoid GSH decrease, but promote the increase of total antioxidant capacity in MD rats' hippocampus. In conclusion, GT protects against memory deficits related to MD, and one of the implicated mechanism seems to be the antioxidant effects of GT.
