Enhanced electroencephalography effective connectivity in frontal low-gamma band correlates of emotional regulation after mindfulness training

Practicing mindfulness, focusing attention on the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment with open and nonjudgement stance, can lead to the development of emotional regulation skills. Yet, the effective connectivity of brain regions during mindfulness has been largely unexplored. Studies have shown that mindfulness practice promotes functional connectivity in practitioners, potentially due to improved emotional regulation abilities and increased connectivity in the lateral prefrontal areas. To examine the changes in effective connectivity due to mindfulness training, we analyzed electroencephalogram (EEG) signals taken before and after mindfulness training, focusing on training-related effective connectivity changes in the frontal area. The mindfulness training group participated in an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program. The control group did not take part. Regardless of the specific mindfulness practice used, low-gamma band effective connectivity increased globally after the mindfulness training. High-beta band effective connectivity increased globally only during Breathing. Moreover, relatively higher outgoing effective connectivity strength was seen during Resting and Breathing and Body-scan. By analyzing the changes in outgoing and incoming connectivity edges, both F7 and F8 exhibited strong parietal connectivity during Resting and Breathing. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the changes in effective connectivity of the right lateral prefrontal area predicted mindfulness and emotional regulation abilities. These results partially support the theory that the lateral prefrontal areas have top-down modulatory control, as these areas have high outflow effective connectivity, implying that mindfulness training cultivates better emotional regulation.

Emotion recognition using effective connectivity and pre-trained convolutional neural networks in EEG signals

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have recently made considerable advances in the field of biomedical signal processing. These methodologies can assist in emotion recognition for affective brain computer interface. In this paper, a novel emotion recognition system based on the effective connectivity and the fine-tuned CNNs from multichannel Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is presented. After preprocessing EEG signals, the relationships among 32 channels of EEG in the form of effective brain connectivity analysis which represents information flow between regions are computed by direct Directed Transfer Function (dDTF) method which yields a 32*32 image. Then, these constructed images from EEG signals for each subject were fed as input to four versions of pre-trained CNN models, AlexNet, ResNet-50, Inception-v3 and VGG-19 and the parameters of these models are fine-tuned, independently. The proposed deep learning architectures automatically learn patterns in the constructed image of the EEG signals in frequency bands. The efficiency of the proposed approach is evaluated on MAHNOB-HCI and DEAP databases. The experiments for classifying five emotional states show that the ResNet-50 applied on dDTF images in alpha band achieves best results due to specific architecture which captures the brain connectivity, efficiently. The accuracy and F1-score values for MAHNOB-HCI were obtained 99.41, 99.42 and for DEAP databases, 98.17, and 98.23. Newly proposed model is capable of effectively analyzing the brain function using information flow from multichannel EEG signals using effective connectivity measure of dDTF and ResNet-50.

A Novel Approach for Segment-Length Selection Based on Stationarity to Perform Effective Connectivity Analysis Applied to Resting-State EEG Signals

Connectivity among different areas within the brain is a topic that has been notably studied in the last decade. In particular, EEG-derived measures of effective connectivity examine the directionalities and the exerted influences raised from the interactions among neural sources that are masked out on EEG signals. This is usually performed by fitting multivariate autoregressive models that rely on the stationarity that is assumed to be maintained over shorter bits of the signals. However, despite being a central condition, the selection process of a segment length that guarantees stationary conditions has not been systematically addressed within the effective connectivity framework, and thus, plenty of works consider different window sizes and provide a diversity of connectivity results. In this study, a segment-size-selection procedure based on fourth-order statistics is proposed to make an informed decision on the appropriate window size that guarantees stationarity both in temporal and spatial terms. Specifically, kurtosis is estimated as a function of the window size and used to measure stationarity. A search algorithm is implemented to find the segments with similar stationary properties while maximizing the number of channels that exhibit the same properties and grouping them accordingly. This approach is tested on EEG signals recorded from six healthy subjects during resting-state conditions, and the results obtained from the proposed method are compared to those obtained using the classical approach for mapping effective connectivity. The results show that the proposed method highlights the influence that arises in the Default Mode Network circuit by selecting a window of 4 s, which provides, overall, the most uniform stationary properties across channels.

Dynamic Reorganization of Functional Connectivity During Post-break Task Reengagement

Because of the undesired fatigue-related consequences, accumulating efforts have been made to find an effective intervention to alleviate the suboptimal cognitive function caused by mental fatigue. Nonetheless, limitations of intervention and evaluation methods may hinder the revealing of underlying neural mechanisms of fatigue recovery. Through the newly-developed dynamic functional connectivity (FC) analysis framework, this study aims to investigate the effects of two types of mid-task interventions (i.e., rest-break and moderate-intensity exercise-break) on the dynamic reorganization of FC during the execution of psychomotor vigilance test (PVT). Using a sliding window approach, temporal brain networks within each frequency band (i.e., δ, θ, α, & β) were estimated before and immediate after the intervention, and towards the end of the task to investigate the immediate and delayed effects respectively during post-break task reengagement. Behaviourally, similar beneficial effects of exercise- and rest-break on performance were observed, manifested by the immediate improvements after both interventions and a long-lasting influence towards the end of tasks. Moreover, temporal brain networks assessment showed significant immediate decreases of fluctuability, which followed by an increase of fluctuability towards the end of intervention tasks. Furthermore, the temporal nodal measure revealed the channels with significant differences across tasks were mainly resided in the fronto-parietal areas that exhibited interesting frequency-dependent distribution. The observations of immediate and delayed dynamic FC reorganizations extend previous fatigue-related intervention and static FC studies, and provide new insight into the dynamic characteristics of FC during post-break task reengagement.

The diagnosis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment by combining the characteristics of brain functional network and support vector machine classifier

BACKGROUND

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is an essential stage of early detection and potential intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Patients with aMCI exhibit partially abnormal functional brain connectivity and it is suggested that these features may represent a new diagnostic marker of early AD.

NEW METHOD

In this paper, we constructed two brain network models, a phase synchronization index (PSI) undirected network and a directed transfer function (DTF) directed network, to evaluate the cognitive function in patients with aMCI. We then built SVM classification models using the network clustering coefficient, global efficiency and average node degree as features to distinguish between aMCI patients and controls.

RESULTS

Our results reveal a classification accuracy and AUC of 66.6 ± 1.7% and 0.7475 and 80.0 ± 2.2% and 0.7825, respectively, for the two network models (PSI and DTF). As the directed network model performed better than the undirected model, we introduced an improved graph theory feature, efficiency density, which resulted in an increased classification accuracy and AUC value 86.6 ± 2.6% and 0.8295, respectively.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS

The analysis of network models and the directionality of information flow is suitable for analysis of nonlinear EEG signals for assessment of the functional state of the brain. Compared with traditional network features, our proposed improved features more comprehensively evaluate transmission efficiency and density of the brain.

CONCLUSION

In this study, we demonstrate that an improved efficiency density feature is helpful for enhancing classification the accuracy of aMCI. Moreover, directed brain network models exhibit better classification for aMCI diagnosis than undirected networks.
