A Subject-Specific Attention Index Based on the Weighted Spectral Power

As an essential cognitive function, attention has been widely studied and various indices based on EEG have been proposed for its convenience and easy availability for real-time attention monitoring. Although existing indices based on spectral power of empirical frequency bands are able to describe the attentional state in some way, the reliability still needs to be improved. This paper proposed a subject-specific attention index based on the weighted spectral power. Unlike traditional indices, the ranges of frequency bands are not empirical but obtained from subject-specific change patterns of spectral power of electroencephalograph (EEG) to overcome the great inter-subject variance. In addition, the contribution of each frequency component in the frequency band is considered different. Specifically, the ratio of power spectral density (PSD) function in attentional and inattentional state is utilized to calculate the weight to enhance the effectiveness of the proposed index. The proposed subject-specific attention index based on the weighted spectral power is evaluated on two open datasets including EEG data of a total of 44 subjects. The results of the proposed index are compared with 3 traditional attention indices using various statistical analysis methods including significance tests and distribution variance measurements. According to the experimental results, the proposed index can describe the attentional state more accurately. The proposed index respectively achieves accuracies of 86.21% and 70.00% at the 1% significance level in both the t-test and Wilcoxon rank-sum test for two datasets, which obtains improvements of 41.38% and 20.00% compared to the best result of the traditional indices. These results indicate that the proposed index provides an efficient way to measure attentional state.

A Comparative Investigation of Wavelet Families for Classification of EOG Signals Related to Healthy and ADHD Children

Based on previous research, there are differences between eye movements of people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and of healthy people, as a result, the existence of differences regarding the electrooculogram (EOG) signals of the 2 groups exists. Thus, this study aimed to examine the recorded EOG signals of 30 ADHD children and 30 healthy children while performing an attention-related task. For this purpose, the EOG signals of these 2 groups were decomposed utilizing various wavelet functions. Afterward, features, including mean, energy, and standard deviation (SD) of approximation and detail wavelet coefficients were calculated. The Davies-Bouldin (DB) index was used for the evaluation of the feature space quality. Finally, the 2 groups were classified using one-dimensional feature vector and support vector machine (SVM). The SD of detail coefficients (db4) was selected as the most effective feature for separating the 2 groups. Statistical analysis revealed that the values of energy and SD of EOG signals' detail coefficients were significantly lower in the ADHD group in comparison with the healthy group (P<.001). These results showed that the speed of the ADHD group's eye movements was slower due to the fact that the high-frequency band activity of EOG signals in the healthy group was higher. In addition, the EOG signals were classified with a detection accuracy of 83.42 ± 3.8%. The results of this study can be applied in designing an EOG biofeedback protocol to treat or mitigate the symptoms of ADHD patients.

A Robust Gaze Estimation Approach via Exploring Relevant Electrooculogram Features and Optimal Electrodes Placements

Gaze estimation, as a technique that reflects individual attention, can be used for disability assistance and assisting physicians in diagnosing diseases such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Parkinson's disease, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Various techniques have been proposed for gaze estimation and achieved high resolution. Among these approaches, electrooculography (EOG)-based gaze estimation, as an economical and effective method, offers a promising solution for practical applications.

OBJECTIVE

In this paper, we systematically investigated the possible EOG electrode locations which are spatially distributed around the orbital cavity. Afterward, quantities of informative features to characterize physiological information of eye movement from the temporal-spectral domain are extracted from the seven differential channels.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

To select the optimum channels and relevant features, and eliminate irrelevant information, a heuristical search algorithm (i.e., forward stepwise strategy) is applied. Subsequently, a comparative analysis of the impacts of electrode placement and feature contributions on gaze estimation is evaluated via 6 classic models with 18 subjects.

RESULTS

Experimental results showed that the promising performance was achieved both in the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) within a wide gaze that ranges from -50° to +50°. The MAE and RMSE can be improved to 2.80° and 3.74° ultimately, while only using 10 features extracted from 2 channels. Compared with the prevailing EOG-based techniques, the performance improvement of MAE and RMSE range from 0.70° to 5.48° and 0.66° to 5.42°, respectively.

CONCLUSION

We proposed a robust EOG-based gaze estimation approach by systematically investigating the optimal channel/feature combination. The experimental results indicated not only the superiority of the proposed approach but also its potential for clinical application. Clinical and translational impact statement: Accurate gaze estimation is a key step for assisting disabilities and accurate diagnosis of various diseases including ASD, Parkinson's disease, and ADHD. The proposed approach can accurately estimate the points of gaze via EOG signals, and thus has the potential for various related medical applications.

Advances in Materials, Sensors, and Integrated Systems for Monitoring Eye Movements

Eye movements show primary responses that reflect humans' voluntary intention and conscious selection. Because visual perception is one of the fundamental sensory interactions in the brain, eye movements contain critical information regarding physical/psychological health, perception, intention, and preference. With the advancement of wearable device technologies, the performance of monitoring eye tracking has been significantly improved. It also has led to myriad applications for assisting and augmenting human activities. Among them, electrooculograms, measured by skin-mounted electrodes, have been widely used to track eye motions accurately. In addition, eye trackers that detect reflected optical signals offer alternative ways without using wearable sensors. This paper outlines a systematic summary of the latest research on various materials, sensors, and integrated systems for monitoring eye movements and enabling human-machine interfaces. Specifically, we summarize recent developments in soft materials, biocompatible materials, manufacturing methods, sensor functions, systems' performances, and their applications in eye tracking. Finally, we discuss the remaining challenges and suggest research directions for future studies.

Neurofeedback Training Protocol Based on Selecting Distinctive Features to Treat or Reduce ADHD Symptoms

Recent research has shown that electroencephalography (EEG) theta/beta ratio (TBR) in cases with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has thus far been reported lower than that in healthy individuals. Accordingly, utilizing EEG-TBR as a biomarker to diagnose ADHD has been called into question. Besides, employing known protocol to reduce EEG-TBR in the vertex (Cz) channel to treat ADHD via neurofeedback (NFB) has been doubted. The present study was to propose a new NFB treatment protocol to manage ADHD using EEG signals from 30 healthy controls and 30 children with ADHD through an attention-based task and to calculate relative power in their different frequency bands. Then, the most significant distinguishing features of EEG signals from both groups were determined via a genetic algorithm (GA). The results revealed that EEG-TBR values in children with ADHD were lower compared with those in healthy peers; however, such a difference was not statistically significant. Likewise, inhibiting alpha band activity and enhancing delta one in F7 or T5 channels was proposed as a new NFB treatment protocol for ADHD. No significant increase in EEG-TBR in the Cz channel among children with ADHD casts doubt on the effectiveness of using EEG-TBR inhibitory protocols in the Cz channel. Consequently, it was proposed to apply the new protocol along with reinforced beta-band activity to treat or reduce ADHD symptoms.
