A cutting-edge new framework for the pain management in children: nanotechnology

Pain is a subjective concept which is ever-present in the medical field. Health professionals are confronted with a variety of pain types and sources, as well as the challenge of managing a patient with acute or chronic suffering. An even bigger challenge is presented in the pediatric population, which often cannot quantify pain in a numerical scale like adults. Infants and small children especially show their discomfort through behavioral and physiological indicators, leaving the health provider with the task of rating the pain. Depending on the pathophysiology of it, pain can be classified as neuropathic or nociceptive, with the first being defined by an irregular signal processing in the nervous system and the second appearing in cases of direct tissue damage or prolonged contact with a certain stimulant. The approach is generally either pharmacological or non-pharmacological and it can vary from using NSAIDs, local anesthetics, opiates to physical and psychological routes. Unfortunately, some pathologies involve either intense or chronic pain that cannot be managed with traditional methods. Recent studies have involved nanoparticles with special characteristics such as small dimension and large surface area that can facilitate carrying treatments to tissues and even offer intrinsic analgesic properties. Pediatrics has benefited significantly from the application of nanotechnology, which has enabled the development of novel strategies for drug delivery, disease diagnosis, and tissue engineering. This narrative review aims to evaluate the role of nanotechnology in current pain therapy, with emphasis on pain in children.

Effect of Nano-Zinc Oxide, Rice Straw Compost, and Gypsum on Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Yield and Soil Quality in Saline-Sodic Soil

The salinity and alkalinity of soils are two fundamental factors that limit plant growth and productivity. For that reason, a field study conducted at Sakha Agric. Res. Station in Egypt during the 2022-2023 winter season aimed to assess the impact of gypsum (G), compost (C), and zinc foliar application in two images, traditional (Z1 as ZnSO4) and nanoform (Z2 as N-ZnO), on alleviating the saline-sodic conditions of the soil and its impact on wheat productivity. The results showed that the combination of gypsum, compost, and N-ZnO foliar spray (G + C + Z2) decreased the soil electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) by 14.81%, 40.60%, and 35.10%, respectively. Additionally, compared to the control, the G + C + Z2 treatment showed improved nutrient content and uptake as well as superior wheat biomass parameters, such as the highest grain yield (7.07 Mg ha-1), plant height (98.0 cm), 1000-grain weight (57.03 g), and straw yield (9.93 Mg ha-1). Interestingly, foliar application of N-ZnO was more effective than ZnSO4 in promoting wheat productivity. Principal component analysis highlighted a negative correlation between increased grain yield and the soil EC and SAR, whereas the soil organic matter (OM), infiltration rate (IR), and plant nutrient content were found to be positively correlated. Furthermore, employing the k-nearest neighbors technique, it was predicted that the wheat grain yield would rise to 7.25 t ha-1 under certain soil parameters, such as EC (5.54 dS m-1), ESP (10.02%), OM (1.41%), bulk density (1.30 g cm-3), infiltration rate (1.15 cm h-1), and SAR (7.80%). These results demonstrate how adding compost and gypsum to foliar N-ZnO can improve the soil quality, increase the wheat yield, and improve the nutrient uptake, all of which can support sustainable agriculture.

Recent advances in nano-fertilizers: synthesis, crop yield impact, and economic analysis

The escalating global demand for food production has predominantly relied on the extensive application of conventional fertilizers (CFs). However, the increased use of CFs has raised concerns regarding environmental risks, including soil and water contamination, especially within cereal-based cropping systems. In response, the agricultural sector has witnessed the emergence of healthier alternatives by utilizing nanotechnology and nano-fertilizers (NFs). These innovative NFs harness the remarkable properties of nanoparticles, ranging in size from 1 to 100 nm, such as nanoclays and zeolites, to enhance nutrient utilization efficiency. Unlike their conventional counterparts, NFs offer many advantages, including variable solubility, consistent and effective performance, controlled release mechanisms, enhanced targeted activity, reduced eco-toxicity, and straightforward and safe delivery and disposal methods. By facilitating rapid and complete plant absorption, NFs effectively conserve nutrients that would otherwise go to waste, mitigating potential environmental harm. Moreover, their superior formulations enable more efficient promotion of sustainable crop growth and production than conventional fertilizers. This review comprehensively examines the global utilization of NFs, emphasizing their immense potential in maintaining environmentally friendly crop output while ensuring agricultural sustainability.

Anti-Obesity Effect of Combining White Kidney Bean Extract, Propolis Ethanolic Extract and CrPi3 on Sprague-Dawley Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet

Obesity has been associated with the occurrence and prevalence of various chronic metabolic diseases. The management of obesity has evolved to focus not only on reducing weight, but also on preventing obesity-related complications. Studies have shown that bioactive components in natural products like white kidney bean extract (WKBE), propolis ethanolic extract (PEE), and chromium picolinate (CrPi3) showed anti-obesity properties. However, no studies have examined the outcomes of combining any of these nutraceutical supplements. We compared the effects of HFD supplemented with WKBE, WKBE+PEE, or WKBE+PEE+CrPi3 against control and obese groups using Sprague-Dawley rats fed a 45% high-fat diet as an in vivo model. Nutritional parameters, biochemical parameters, and biomarkers of cardiovascular disease, liver function, kidney function, and gut health were among the comparable effects. Our findings showed that combining the three nutraceutical supplements had a synergetic effect on reducing weight gain, food utilization rate, abdominal fat, serum lipids, arterial and hepatic lipids, risk of cardiovascular disease, and blood glucose level, in addition to improving renal function and gut microbiota. We attributed these effects to the α-amylase inhibitor action of WKBE, flavonoids, and polyphenol content of PEE, which were potentiated with CrPi3 resulting in a further reduction or normalization of certain parameters.

Treadmill exercise with nanoselenium supplementation affects the expression of Irisin/FNDC5 and semaphorin 3A in rats exposed to cigarette smoke extract

In the current study, we investigated the impacts of 6 weeks of aerobic interval training (AIT) with selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on muscle, serum, and lung irisin (FNDC5) and Sema3A in rats exposed to cigarette smoke extract (CSE). To this end, 49 male Wistar rats (8 weeks old) were divided into seven groups: control, SeNPs (2.5 mg/kg b.w by oral gavage, 3 days/week, 6 weeks), AIT (49 min/day, 5 days/week for 6 weeks, interval), SeNPs + AIT, CSE (150 µL by IP injection, 1 day/week for 6 weeks), CSE + AIT, and CSE + SeNPs + AIT. The CSE group showed a significant reduction in irisin and Sema3A serum levels, as well as a decrease in FNDC5 and Sema3A gene expression in lung tissue (p < 0.05). A combined treatment (AIT with SeNPs) significantly increased the serum level and the expression of muscle and lung irisin (FNDC5) and Sema3A in CSE received groups (p < 0.05). There was a positive and significant correlation between muscle FNDC5 and lung FNDC5 in the CSE + SeNPs + AIT group (r = 0.92, p = 0.025). In addition, there was a positive and significant correlation between serum Sema3A and lung Sema3A of CSE + SeNPs + AIT group (r = 0.97, p = 0.004). Seemingly, performing aerobic exercises with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory supplement nano-selenium in the model of lung damage (similar to COPD) can boost myokine irisin and Sema3A, especially in serum and lung tissue. These results displayed the paracrine/endocrine regulatory function of these myokines on other tissues. In other words, these interventions emphasized the creation of crosstalk between skeletal muscles and damaged lung, focusing on its recovery; however, further research is needed.

Effect of foliar application of phosphorus nanoparticles on the performance and sustainable agriculture of sweet corn

Traditional phosphorus fertilizers are necessary for plant growth but about 80-90% are lost into the surrounding environment via irrigation, therefore nano-fertilizers have been developed as slow-release fertilizers to achieve sustainable agriculture. This trial investigated the impact of the foliar application of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA-NPs) as a source of nano-phosphorus (P-NPs) on two cultivars of sweet corn (yellow and white) throughout two seasons. The morphology and structure of the prepared HA-NPs were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). In addition, agro-morphological criteria, chemical contents (i.e., photosynthetic pigments, phenols, indoles, minerals, etc.), and genomic template stability percentage (GTS%) were evaluated in the produced sweet corn. The application of 50 mg/l HA-NPs improved the growth characteristics, yield per hectare, leaf pigments, and chemical content of yellow sweet corn, whereas the application of 100 mg/l of HA-NPs to white sweet corn enhanced the vegetative characteristics, production, photosynthetic pigments, phenols, and indoles. The difference in results may be due to the presence of a +ve unique band with SCoT-4 and SCot-2 primers at 1250 and 470 bp in yellow and white corn treated with 50 and 100 mg/l, respectively. The minimum GTS% was recorded at a concentration of 75 mg/l for both white and yellow corn. The HA-NPs can be applied as a foliar source of P-NPs to achieve agricultural sustainability.

Nano-Biofertilizer Formulations for Agriculture: A Systematic Review on Recent Advances and Prospective Applications

In the twenty-first century, nanotechnology has emerged as a potentially game-changing innovation. Essential minerals are mostly unavailable in modern cropping systems without the application of synthetic fertilizers, which have a serious negative impact on the ecosystem. This review focuses on the coupling of nanoparticles with biofertilizers to function as nano-biofertilizers (NBFs), which may ensure world food security in the face of the rising population. The inoculation of plants with NBFs improves plant development and resistance to stress. Metallic nanoparticles as well as organic components comprising polysaccharide and chitosan may be encapsulated, utilizing microbe-based green synthesis to make NBFs, which circumvents the limitations of conventional chemical fertilizers. The application of NBFs is just getting started, and shows more promise than other approaches for changing conventional farming into high-tech "smart" farming. This study used bibliographic analysis using Web of Science to find relevant papers on "nano biofertilizers", "plants", and "agriculture". These subjects have received a lot of attention in the literature, as shown by the co-citation patterns of these publications. The novel use of nanotechnology in agriculture is explored in this research work, which makes use of the unique characteristics of nanoscale materials to address urgent concerns including nutrient delivery, crop protection, and sustainable farming methods. This study attempts to fill in some of the gaps in our knowledge by discussing the formulation, fabrication, and characterization of NBFs, as well as elucidating the mechanisms by which NBFs interact with plants and how this benefits the ability of the plant to withstand biotic and abiotic stress brought about by climate change. This review also addresses recent developments and future directions in farming using NBF formulations in the field.

Combined cerium and zinc oxide nanoparticles induced hepato-renal damage in rats through oxidative stress mediated inflammation

The toxicity profiles of nanoparticles (NPs) used in appliances nowadays remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the toxicological consequences of exposure to cerium oxide (CeO₂) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles given singly or in combination on the integrity of liver and kidney of male Wistar rats. Twenty (20) rats were allotted into four groups and treated as: Control (normal saline), CeO₂NPs (50 μg/kg), ZnONPs (80 μg/kg) and [CeO₂NPs (50 μg/kg) + ZnONPs (80 μg/kg)]. The nanoparticles were given to the animals through the intraperitoneal route, three times per week for four repeated weeks. Results revealed that CeO₂ and ZnO NPs (singly) increased serum AST and ALT by 29% & 57%; 41% & 18%, and co-administration by 53% and 23%, respectively. CeO₂ and ZnO NPs increased hepatic and renal malondialdehyde (MDA) by 33% and 30%; 38% and 67%, respectively, while co-administration increased hepatic and renal MDA by 43% and 40%, respectively. The combined NPs increased hepatic NO by 28%. Also, CeO₂ and ZnO NPs, and combined increased BAX, interleukin-1β and TNF-α by 45, 38, 52%; 47, 23, 82% and 41, 83, 70%, respectively. Histology revealed hepatic necrosis and renal haemorrhagic parenchymal in NPs-treated rats. Summarily, CeO₂ and ZnO NPs produced oxidative injury and induced inflammatory process in the liver and kidney of experimental animals.

The impact of nanofertilizer on agro-morphological criteria, yield, and genomic stability of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

The use of agricultural fertilizers is one of the methods to beat the desired enormous increase in universal food production. The application of nanotechnology in agriculture is regarded as one of the promising approaches to elevate crop production. Whereas mineral nutrients play a crucial role in the growth and yield of the common bean. The experiments were conducted to investigate the application effect of micronutrients as nanoparticles (MN-NPs) on the common ben plants. The trial was performed in the field in El-Menofya, Egypt, through two seasons (2019 & 2020) in a randomized complete block design with three replicates and four combinations of MN-NPs (ZnO, MnO₂ and MoO₃) with concentrations 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 mg/L as a foliar application. The data exhibited that the foliar application of MN-NPs significantly upgraded the vegetative growth characters, flower number/plant, photosynthetic pigments, and yield. The concentration of 40 mg/L of MN-NPs leads to improving the vegetative growth, flowering number, and yield characteristics of the common bean. While the biochemical components varied in their response to MN-NPs combinations. The recommended MN-NPs concentration to ameliorate the common bean growth and yield was 40 mg/L.

The effect of exposure to MoO3-NP and common bean fertilized by MoO3-NPs on biochemical, hematological, and histopathological parameters in rats

Nanotechnologies has been used to introduce several beneficial tools in the agricultural field. Herein, the effect of molybdenum oxide nanoparticles (MoO₃-NPs) was investigated by evaluating the hematological, biochemical, and histopathological parameters in rats orally exposed to MoO₃-NPs or fed common beans (CB) fertilized by MoO₃-NPs. In the first study, 18 rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: G1 (control group) was given water orally, while G2 and G3 were administered 10 and 40 ppm MoO₃-NPs by oral gavage tube, respectively. There was a significant increase in the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), albumin, and total protein; however, there was a a significant decrease in body weight change (BWC), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatinine, creatine kinase–MB (CK-MB), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and testosterone levels in G3 compared to G1. In the second study, 24 rats were divided into 4 groups: the control (C) group was fed a balanced diet, and three groups were fed on a balanced diet plus 10% CB that was fertilized with 0, 10, and 40 ppm MoO₃-NPs, resulting in nCB, CB10, and CB40 groups, respectively. This revealed a significant increase in BWC and total food intake (TFI) but a significant decrease in relative kidney weight in all the CB groups compared to the control group. In CB10 and CB40 groups ALT, LDH, TSH, FT3, and testosterone levels were significantly lower than the respective levels in the control group. We concluded that high doses of MoO₃-NPs caused more side effects than low doses in both experiments.

Green Synthesis of Nanofertilizers and Their Application as a Foliar forCucurbita pepoL

The implementation of nanofertilizers in agriculture is the purpose in specific to decrease mineral losses in fertilizing and raises the yield during mineral management as well as supporting agriculture development. Hence, this experiment was conducted in Shebin El-Kom, El-Monifia governorate, Egypt, during two seasons 2017 and 2018 to study the effect of micronutrient oxide nanoparticles of zinc, iron, and manganese, as well as combination between these oxides as a foliar application on the growth, yield, and quality of squash plants. The obtained results showed that the spraying of manganese oxide nanoparticles on the plants led to the best vegetative growth characteristics, also, the characteristics of the fruits, yield, and the content of photosynthetic pigments. On the contrary, the content of organic matter, protein, lipids, and energy gave the highest value in squash fruits that have been sprayed with iron oxide nanoparticles.
